View Full Version : ATP BRACKET CHALLENGE 2013 - Shanghai open Saturday closes Sunday 6.00 am
Wheyhey!!!!!!
Thanks everyone! I've never topped the group before, I'm usually in the middle or lower ranked places in the group, absolutely thrilled to win one at last! 193rd out of 19771 must be one of the best results I've had in my years of doing the bracket, put me up to 907th in the circuit too, even with a so-so 8877th result in Indian Wells! Although knowing my usual clay-court results that will soon go down.
Very well done to Genbrit and Sally too!
Well done Elenive!  Also Genbrit and Sally!
Well done Elenive, great stuff!

Congrats Elenive, Miami has been a good tournament for you! Well done Genbrit and Sally too.
Well done Elenive, Genbrit and Sally
There will be a bracket challenge for Monte Carlo. The bracket will be open on Saturday morning (Eastern Time) so that will probably be afternoon UK time. The tournament has a Sunday start, so there will only be a short itme in which to do it and its unlikely qualifiers will be in the draw when the bracket closes.
Gotta be careful then about picking Djokovic, if he's going to pull out at last minute, or his injury kicks in halfway through. Tough one!
I wonder if Nole is still playing/has played in the minitennis exho today.

He has ...

Just entered. I'm assuming that Nole will be fine.
They have given 2 diferent deadline times. On the website it says 4.30 am ET which is 9.30 am UK time. In the tweet and email it says 5.00 am ET which is 10.00 am UK time

I've assumed Nole will be more than fine  .... but my picking has been pretty rubbish this year!

I've assumed that Nole will play 2 rounds before being knocked out ...
:shades:
And for Rafa to win the thing again!
Yeah I wasn't sure what to do with nole, but went for a punt that Potty will beat him and eventually get to the final.
Tsonga vs Almagro is another tough one I think!

It looks as though they'll close entries at 09.30 BST even though play doesn't start until 10.00 BST.
I've gone for lots of wierd & wonderful picks so I'll either do hopelessly or brilliantly! Bananas in stock...

Done it now, didn't want to risk leaving it till the morning and possibly missing it! Assumed Nole will be ok!
The ATP site says the deadline is 10AM. I have just entered but not very confident trying to think who is much better on clay than other surfaces

The Cabbagewriter has mucked up my morning!!!
:grrr:
0/1 after he beat Bellucci ...
I can't access our group to see who is doing what but found Linda in the top 99!!!

Ooh - I'm on the leaderboard! I don't suppose that will last very long :rolling:
Seems like they haven't set up the groups page yet.
Well done Dolly! 2/2 so far :)
:grrr: I had Belucci to win the first and second rounds. I'll just have to hope that the qualy I chose to beat Chardy beats Cabbagewriter in the next round.
I have Chardy beating Kohli :rolling:
I decided to go for the qualy as Chardy has never won a match at Monte Carlo, even though he has played there several times. Fingers crossed the qualy will be a clay courter. Also less than 10% went for the qualy.
I think the Klizan Monaco match could be interesting. I plumped for Klizan as Monaco was playing in the semifinals of Houston and has to travel across the pond and acclimatize to a 7 hour time difference within a day or two. And Monaco has not done so well at Monte Carlo before. Yet the bookies and 92% peeps in the bracket have gone for Monaco
The only qualy I picked is the one playing Davydenko.
Easy win for Dimitrov make a hat-trick for me today! :cheer:
The group page is up now - there are 6 of us in our group on 3 points.
The only qualy I picked is the one playing Davydenko.
I nearly picked the one playing the Donkey, but I just went for the ones playing Chardy and Stepanek.
The qualiers have now been placed in the draw. Andujar plays Chardy.
So I see! I've made a bad mistake having Chardy get to the 3rd round. I don't like these Sunday starts and having to pick without knowing who the qualifiers are

I see I've got off to my usual great start ...
Some very lucky picks (including Simon losing!) help me climb from 1/3 to 4/8. Getting my bungee rope ready...

15-04-2013, 13:35
Frustrating qualies didn't come out sooner, certainly wouldn't have gone for Brands beating Davydenko then.
Almost went for Fognini, went for Benny pulling of a surprise on home soil too. Grrrr usual poor start full of red.

I'm not even looking .... :sofa:
It's all gone wrong today!
 Well, hopefully things will look up tomorrow!
Of my under-20%-picks, 3/4 have come good:thumbup:
And of the 60% plus picks, I'm also 3/4 - and I had Seppi losing in R2 so that might come good too!
It's the 20-60% range where I've scored a big fat zero out of 5 picks! :grrr:
hfwardhouse
15-04-2013, 18:35
I see I've really excelled myself this time .... I knew I should have resisted the urge to look
Anybody got a rattle I could borrow to throw out of my pram please? :grrr:
Well its bound to be downhill from here. I'm some how in 101st place overall (just off the leaderboard:grrr:) and top of our group by 2 points. Thats not happened for a very long time for me if ever.
Edit make that 93rd now with Gasquet and Mayer winning for me. and just picked up another point with Granollers (a 92% pick so that won't make a huge difference). I need Kohli to do me a favour and win the third set as he is only a 39% pick. If he could do that for me maybe I would be visible on the leaderboard:nailbiter: Also need Tsonga and Janowicz in the other matches on court

Wow - well done you. You must have made some fairly controversial picks......
Wow - well done you. You must have made some fairly controversial picks......
Is that being damned by faint praise!!! Probably true though.
As well as Kohli, Tsonga and Janowicz in later matches I need Monfils, Del Potro, Gulbis, Almagro, Galung (who? suppose its what goes with picking a qualifier v Melzer) and Monaco
Kohli is letting me down though having won the first set 6:2 he loses the next 6:2 and now down 1:4 in the third
Edit - up to 75th place now the Granollers result is in but with Kohli ddown 5:2 in the third that may well be the highest I get
Edit2 - but he not only wins his next serve to get to 5:3 down but breaks to get back to 5:4. Mind you I still know how this is going to end string me along and then let it all fail in a tie break or even get broken in his next service game
Edit 3 - Yes just as expected throws in a double fault at 30:30 to give a match point - hold on though Kohli saves it to go to deuce... and wins the next two to get back to 5 games all. This is going the distance and is stopping me getting back to work.
edit 4 - Well hopefully this will get to a tiebreak as Kohli goes 5:6 down
edit 5 and it does go to the tie break and Kohli is properly ahead 1:0 with a min break. He is still going to end up losing I know probably something like 15:13. oh and there goes the mini break back to 1:1
edit 6 - and now at 2:2 have just seen that they have both won 90 points out of the 180 played so nothing to seperate them until Kohli throws it away in a few moments. 3:3 at the change of ends. By the way I'm not sure really why I am doing this as its probably only me that is the least bit interested in this. Kohli holds his next serve to go 4:3 up. Come on win at least one of Andujar's next two serves. Yessss 5:3 I know he is still stringing me along before the fail
Edit 7 Can't believe it he wins the tiebreak 7:3 now where is that going to put me in the overall and will I be visible on the leaderboard? and how long before they get it up.
Edit 8 and finally it is uploaded and I am up to 43rd= though frustratingly still not shown on the leaderboard!!! Oh and now a three point gap in our group down to James in second place.
and in the next matches
Tsonga looking good 1 set up and but that won't make much difference as he is a 98% pick
Galung won the first set easily from Melzer but then lost the second and is now a break down at 1:2 in the third
Worse still Janowicz lost the first set and is serving to stay in it at 4:5 down in the second
and what a surprise Montanes won the first set against Monfils - I think for sure many more would have gone for Montanes if the qualifiers had been placed
So only Tsonga is going in my favour at the moment and my big fall is surely now about to happen
Edit yes Tsonga wins but thats my high point as Janowicz and Galung both lose. I'm dropping as predicted

Thank you Ernie!
:flowers:
Thank you Ernie!
:flowers:
I second that! :phew:
Yes I too finished the day with a Gulbis win which gives me a 3 point lead in our group and back up to 274= on the overall
Tomorrow I have
2 dead matches (Anderson and Montanes would really help my damage limitation),
6 huge favourites (94% plus for 5 and a 75% v 6% in the other),
2 minor picks where the favourite(s) are out (these could help me enormously so come on Fognini and Mayer),
and one reasonably close one in Monaco 52% v Gulbis 30%
My full list is as follows
Djokovic (99%) v Youzhny
Monaco (52%) v Gulbis (30%)
Raonic (75%) v Nieminen (6%)
Berdych (98%) v Granollers
Fognini (12%) v Ramos
Cilic (69%) v Anderson (16%) - dead for me
Mayer (7%) v Bautista (1%)
Nadal (99.8%) v Matosevic
Almagro (94%) v Melzer
Wawrinka (82%) v Montanes (<1%) - dead for me
Murray (99.6%) v Roger-Vasselin
I have quite a few percentage picks missing from the players I did not pick and can't find easily in anyone elses draw. If you have any of these please let me know the percentages
Djokovic (99%) v Youzhny
Monaco (52%) v Gulbis (30%)
Raonic (75%) v Nieminen (6%)
Berdych (98%) v Granollers
Fognini (12%) v Ramos
Cilic (69%) v Anderson (16%) - dead for me
Mayer (7%) v Bautista (1%)
Nadal (99.8%) v Matosevic
Almagro (94%) v Melzer
Wawrinka (82%) v Montanes (<1%) - dead for me
Murray (99.6%) v Roger-Vasselin
I have quite a few percentage picks missing from the players I did not pick and can't find easily in anyone elses draw. If you have any of these please let me know the percentages
Ramos is 0.7% :pierre:
Otherwise I've got the same picks except for the dead matches:
Raonic is dead for me, but I've got Cilic and Stan.
So come on, Ramos and Mayer!
Lost with Raonic, Berdych won but that makes little difference (down to 347th) however Cilic has just won and thats real bad news for me as only 1/3 so far today and that pushes me down to 1,247th on the overall and a 1 point lead in our group.
Nadal is well placed but again that makes little immediate difference but more importantly Fognini is a set up and Mayer and Bautista are on serve in the decider at 3:4. Come on Mayer and Fognini you two will either make my day or mean I will be sinking fast particularly if Wawrinka and Gulbis win later
Edit 1 Nadal wins but more importantly so does Mayer that helps to cancel out my Cilic loss 3/5 so far today. Fognini has just thrown away a break in the second back to 2:2. Stan and Montanes are now on court - come on Montanes and we should soon be seeing whether Djoko is going to play or not. - Mayer's win lifts me back up to 325th on the overall and a 3 point lead in our group again
Edit 2 Stan is probably going to hit me hard as an 82% pick and quickly up a set but can Fognini give me balance as hes serving for the match at 6:5 in the second. Does a Djoko being broken in his first game mean he's not really fit - time will tell.
Edit 3 Fognini keeps my day alive and am now back up to 116th in the overall and a 5 point lead in our group - but that will all fall away when Stan sees off Montanes - already 2:1 up in the second with a break. Djoko though has saved the potential bagel winning his third service game 1:4 now is that the sign of a comeback or a minor rally that will nto be continued?
Edit 4 and wins with Djoko (good come back from 5:1 down in the first), Andy and Monaco but a loss from Almagro I end the day 11 places up on the overall at 263
Gulbis has lost :grrr: his temper too :grrr:
Tomorrow has the following matches
Djokovic (94%) v Monaco (<3%)
Del Potro (92.4% v Nieminen (<6%)
Berdych (93%) v Fognini (<7%)
Cilic (10%) v Gasquet (86%) - dead match for me come on Cilic
Dimitrov (9%) v Mayer (2%)
Nadal (99.5%) v Kohlschreiber (<1%)
Melzer (<1%) v Tsonga (59%) - dead match for me come on Melzer
Murray (87%) v Wawrinka (12%)
So with 5 massive favourites (Andy is the weakest at only 87%), 2 dead matches where I could sink badly if Gasquet and Tsonga win and one massive match for me with the unfancied Dimitrov against the even less fancied Mayer I could be sinking badly if those last three all go against me or if the two damage limitations work and I get Dimitrov then I could be aproaching getting on the leaderboard. Is it OK to dream even though I know its not going to happen.
Only one match matters for my bracket tomorrow! Dimitrov v Mayer is dead and I'm on the favourite for all the others, EXCEPT that I've got Monaco beating the supposedly injured Nole! Cue a big drop as 94% get that one right....
Although I have Nole beating Monaco I want him to lose or pull out... fed up with him now! :grrr:
Oh well, game over! I only have three scoring matches left - Rafa in the QF, SF and Final. Everything else is dead!:wino:
I have Rafa, Nole and Gasquet left.
Very bad for me, only have Rafa left! Ah well, can't win them all!
I have Rafa, Nole and Gasquet left.
Me too.

I'm in the bottom 100 of the entire bracket, an achievement in itself... :crying:
Congratulations, Hawkeye   ;)
Bank holiday weekends and then a failing WIFI at our holiday site meant I missed this. :grrr:

Yes but it's probably the same for 95% of the people who entered so it may not be so bad for you.
Yeah that's my finalist out too, though don't really care that much as it means Andy could possibly get to the final now... Berdy looks like the main threat to Andy getting to the final now! Shocked that Nole lost...

I have just realised that the first main draw match starts off at 13.00 local time which is 12 noon UK time. Its strange that they are keeping the bracket open for longer than that. I wonder if they will change their minds and bring it forward.

They have - to 9pm UK time. I have no idea what the ATP are doing. Warning to those who haven't entered yet you have less than half an hour to enter now!
4 minutes to go!
I did my entry very quickly yesterday with the idea of revising it this morning, but I'll leave it as it is as there isn't time to look at it properly. I just wish we knew where the qualifiers were going as some of them could be dangerous.

:hmm:
Noooooooooooooooooooooo. I could have done it before 9.00 am if I had known. Its crazy as its qualifiers playing first.
I have just checked my email from them yesterday - it says 10.00 am CET, which would be 9.00 am UK time. :grrr: :grrr: :grrr: The website definitely said 10.00 am ET yesterday.
Did my bracket in about 2-3 minutes! I predict a repeat of the Monte-Carlo doom for me! Madrid went relatively ok, that's provided Rafa beats Stan of course (Hope he does anyway, although I would be happy to see Stan win his first masters 1000s even if it screws up my bracket a little more!)
I have emailed them and tweeted them. It may be worth a few others tweeting them too. Its crazy as play for the main draw has not started yet.
I think this has been updated for the final . . .

Ok I know this is going to sound really silly but I've only just read the first post properly and realised we have our own Bracket! I've only ever done my own privately!
Have done mine for Rome but will do the next group one :)
You just do your own Bracket as normal, you don't do a separate one for the group. You can join the group at any time (in fact, you can belong to any number of groups).

Well done Linda for being in the lead for the circuit.
I'm still feeling disgruntled with the ATP bracket for changing the closing time. I was in 700 and something position in the circuit overall.
Awww, that's so unfair, Cazza

Tried the copy paste thing but it didn't work, Sally.
Well done Pabbers
Oh dear - knew it was too good to last..........my fortunes have been reversed today!

10 points content with that. Frustrating though as if I'd knows it was Gulbis who were to play Jarkko I would have picked the Latvian.
Edit Kohli brings me to 11th and catapults me into the top 700.
Three qualifiers won today. It is rather annoying.

Tippy has withdrawn Rosol replaces him and will face Troicki in the first round. Need the Czech to win.
Sallydaisy
13-05-2013, 22:31
So if he beats Tricky Troicki and then Super-Ernie, Rosol will have the dubious pleasure of playing Rafa in Round 3. Can't help feeling the Spaniard would relish the prospect of putting the Czech in his proper place.
:p
This is the third tournament running that Almagro has let me down :grrr:

This is the third tournament running that Almagro has let me down :grrr:
Ditto. I've been adamant for years that he has the talent to breakthrough at one of these tournaments. Perhaps I need to let go of that idle fantasy. Had him reaching the final in Madrid and the current one Rome. Insanity - "Doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result."
So lost a finalist and a semi finalist in Haas and Dimitrov has bowed out so a catastrophic day for my bracket.
The slippery slope towards the bananas commences! Oh well it was good while it lasted :rolling:
I too plumped for Haas and after Benny let me down last time I plumped for Almagro - damned if you do and damned if you don't!
Yes, I also went for Haas. Stan has just lost the first set against Berloq. Oh, and Montanes has just broken Nole!!!!!
Come on Stan! Come on Anderson!
Well done Stan! Well done Anderson!
Stan has withdrawn
Tsonga out
Andy out
My Bracket is screwed!

Not much going to plan right now!:crying:
Have I got any players left in? I daren't look.
Have I got any players left in? I daren't look.
I had Stan to the Semi, and Potty into the final, so mine is screwed, and I'm dropping like a stone. Not going to look again now #flounce
I had Potty to the final too
Very nearly lost my winner just now
Got the parachute out - am plummeting rapidly. Only got Fed left in the bottom half and I've got him going out before the semis!
I also only have Fed in the bottom half and I had him losing to DelPo in the semis

I only have Rafa left. Have Andy to win
The Montreal ATP Bracket Challenge opens late on Friday.
Deadline is 17.00 UK time on Monday.
Wow it's been so long since the last Bracket that I'd completely forgotten about it, thanks for the reminder Cazza!!
I'm in this time - only just realised late last night that we were back for action
Just remembered to check who my qualifier picks ended up as - mind you, I'll probably regret the changes I've just made!

Should have spent more time over it but at least I'm in!
Like most people, 3/4 for the early matches, thanks to Tomic losing. Only Genbrit has managed 4/4.
Thank you Istomin - but I think I'm suffering from oxygen deprivation!:faint:

Almost made the top 100 with Stepanek's win, but I've lost 3/3 since then - hope my parachute is in working order!

There seem to have been quite a few upsets so far - there is a lot of red on my bracket already!

First big tournament for a month... The problem is predicting which upsets will happen; I've probably gone for too many! (You won't like me picking Stan to beat Rafa!!)
I don't mind at all. Stan just lost to Paire.
My picks were based on YTD form - but of course after the break that needn't be the best indication.

I'm currently 14002nd out of 14424 at the moment - and fully expect to be 14424th on Sunday!!!
I had Andy beating Nole in the final and seriously thought Jerzy might upset Rafa today so my Bracket is well and truly shot up!!!
It's all good practice for Cincy!!!
:p
It's a strange tournament, though. So many upsets. I based all my picks on YTD form and yet I'm now 4106th. I don't remember doing so badly before.

Well........it just goes to show..........what, I'm not sure but it must show something
The ATP bracket challenge for Cincinnati will open on Friday evening/Saturday morning.
Amazingly, I'm still in 150th place, but with only 5 live matches left, the slide starts here!
I now have nobody left in the bottom half at all!
I now have nobody left in the bottom half at all!
You think that's bad??? I've only got one player left - Nole in the quarters and the semi!
I just have to
I now have nobody left in the bottom half at all!
With Popisil, Davydenko, Raonic and Gulbis being the players you didn't pick the vast majority of competitors will also have a complete sea of red in the bottom half. If Nadal wins you will shoot up the overall as only 20% thought he would beat Nole and less than 15% win the tournament.
Like Jaysee I just have two Nole picks left that can score for me.
Just done my Cincy bracket. Did it very quickly and went with my heart and put Andy as the winner like I did for Montreal ( )
Montreal has turned out to be the worst bracket for me this year and really lowered my ranking so doing this one quickly will hopefully help.
Done but some eccentric picks!
You too? I've certainly made some odd picks this time, which is not something I would normally do. I don't know what got into me!
The deadline is 9.00 pm UK time on Sunday.
Realised that I hadn't done my picks with 1 minute 45 seconds left. Got my entry in with 12 seconds left. Probably do better than Montreal...

Yep, just beat me at the end Linda. Of course, I had picked Andy to win. :)
Really bad Montreal bracket for me  13369th out of 14424 (!!!!) Only a mere 41 points!
Hopefully I can get do better in Cincy, well especially as I've gone for Andy to be champ again! :cheer: :cheer:
Ahhhhh. The group list has now moved to Cincy on the website. So we can't do an end of tournament placings list for Montreal.
You couldn't access anyone's team except your own for the last three days. Shambles.

Thanks Linda! I know the secret now..........take about 5 minutes maximum to do the whole thing! I only remembered at the last minute!

After wins for Djoko and Raonic, Jane is joint 5th, two points behind the leader, and banskogirl is joint 21st overall.

:rolling: it's getting silly now! I'm stocking up on bananas - bound to need them soon - oh and I don't usually suffer from motion sickness but I think I might be better with something for the bungee that's bound to follow soon!
A lot of folk with only one possible scoring match left now, a few with 2. I've got 3 so it's looking good if Rafa wins the title.

I'v only got Rafa left alive now and that only for tonight, after that they are all dead
That's my bracket pretty much dead. Lucky I put Potty for final and Rafa for semies against Fed, but I had Andy as winner
The 2 in the top 4 with delPo to make the final are left disappointed...
Realised that I hadn't done my picks with 1 minute 45 seconds left. Got my entry in with 12 seconds left. Probably do better than Montreal...In fact, my best performance of the season so far. Typical.
The Shanghai bracket starts this weekend. It looks like there will be a vary short time frame to enter between when the draw comes out on Saturday and the start of the tournament on the Sunday.
It says this on the ATP website
Shanghai Fantasy
You'll have 24 hours to make your selections for the Shanghai Rolex Masters. Picks must be locked by 7am CEST/1am EDT on Sunday.
I have interpreted 7.00 am CEST to be 6 am UK time. Sometimes the ATP changes its mind over the when to close the bracket on Sunday starts. It could either be the start of the tournament or the start of play of the main draw. Sometimes on the Sunday they put qualifiers on first and then the main draw starts later.
