Fantastic performance from Lleyton again - he's having a briiliant grass-court season

No, Berdy is in Djoko's half. The next highest seeded player in Fed's quarter is Stan - and it looks like he's about to go out too. It seemed like Fed didn't have a good draw, but it's turning out good for him after all.

Man! Doesn't he always?

Hi People

First of all I am a she not a he. In fact I had some messages with you a couple of years ago Linda. What I purchased is a debenture ticket from Viagogo. Regretting it somewhat now as Rafa has been beaten but the deed is done.

IMHO Rafa going out is sad for the tournament but good for Andy as well as Roger.
Simple reason is Andy no longer has to potentially face the most in form player of the last few months.
I had been hoping that Roger would soften Rafa up for Andy as I still fear Rafa in the Rafa-Andy match up.
Now, if Andy and Roger can get through their matches, it may end up as a straightforward winner take all.

That is fine as long as they do not leave the winner a push over for Nole. In fact beating Roger at Wimbledon, following the documentary last night, might be seen as the "passing of the flame" match.
So all in all it means one less tricky opponent potentially for Andy with another one less likely of arriving a bit battered.

If they get that far :cauldron:

I feel sorry for Rafa that he's lost early again this year. He used to really enjoy playing at Wimbledon so it must be hard for him to not do well there anymore. I think probably the low bounce is hard for him with his knee condition, and also with not playing Halle he hasn't had time to properly adjust to the grass after playing on clay for so many months. I hope he doesn't take the rest of the season off now though - tennis is better when all of the big 4 are playing.

On the other hand, I'm really pleased for Lleyton even though I like Stan too. Lleyton's had so many tough first round slam draws in recent years, so it's great to see him come out as the winner in this one. Hope he can win more rounds this year.

So gutted for Rafa, I really like him. I wonder what is the matter with him. He was clearly hampered in his movement. Nice of him not to say he lost cos he couldn't move, but would have been nice to know what was wrong.
I think that him going out lessens Andy's chances. I was hoping that Roger and Rafa would kill each other, and leave Andy with an easy victim. Ho hum.

Rapt Leyton won, no least because I picked him as one of my punts (all the others lost :-( ). I couldn't help observing that he was a Heather style player, no real weapons, but such heart. Wardy and Robbo could really learn from him. I was really exited. A great first day (apart from all the Brits going out). I only hope that tomorrow will be as exiting. :-)

Wardy needs shooting. He was sooo passive when he was up and had set points. He needs to get some anger in him and stop playing it safe on the big points. So many chances ie WCs this few weeks and nothing to show for it. LTA needs to sort itself out.

Helen40
25-06-2013, 00:41
I hope they don't do to Darcis what they did to Rosol last year ie put him on an outside court.

I felt sorry for Rosol last year he played such a blinder - and Rafa did play well last year against him, then shoved him somewhere in obscurity when we wanted to see more of him. Admitedly I feel abit differently about Darcis. Rafa was clearly hampered today, and Darcis didn't play anywhere near as well as Rosol had done last year IMHO.

Lleyton has a better chance against Fed than Stan - poor Stan just folds when Roger is on the other side of the net!

Linda
25-06-2013, 07:30
Themass - my humble apologies for referring to you as 'he' :shamed:

I think others above have explained exactly what the problem was for Rafa - the low bounce is difficult if you have bad knees, and he didn't have any preparation on grass before the tournament. I don't think the problem is as bad as last year and I'm sure we'll see him back for USO. (Although I saw hardly any of the match myself as I was at work  Others have said above that he played worse than last year - again I was at work for the Rosol match but I was there for his first match and he played dreadfully in it and it was clear that there was something wrong.) I'm terribly sad that he's out of the tournament and that I won't be seeing him there later in the week.

I think it makes Andy's chances much better - I had thought that the most likely scenario was for Andy to lose to Rafa again in the semis, but then for Rafa to be too knackered to play well against Djoko in the final. However Andy needs to take the most of this chance! 'Cos I thought it was his chance in 2009 and 2012 when Rafa wasn't there but Andy didn't make it. Maybe third time lucky for him!

After all that 'who will get Rafa in their quarter of the draw' we now face a semi with the goat. Maybe, just maybe someone else will catch him on a bad day first, although I do fancy Andy's chances against him. Lets hope someone will wear out Novak

I could cry for Rafa - such a shame

DrewZiph
25-06-2013, 09:28
Sure hope Lleyton can put a decent run together.

Dustin Brown, Isner and then practically any of the four still in Rafa's section. A far easier draw than he could have hoped for given his ranking.

The down side is I really can't see anyone in that quarter troubling Fed....

:wimbly: What a first day!

Disappointed in Ward - i thought beforehand that it was winnable for him, but once again he didn't seem to take chances when he had them.

Kyle Edmund, the new poster boy and next great English (deliberately said English there!) hope - certainly looks promising, didn't seem overawed by the occasion and did well enough considering the gulf in experience. Hopefully by next Wimbledon we will see a progression from him.

:crying: Poor Rafa. He clearly wasn't moving well, I felt so sorry for him. Well done Darcis though.

Federer. What can I say. How come, no matter how bad the draw appears, it always seems to end up in his favour?? As we say in thesee parts, if he fell in the canal he'd come out smelling of roses. I was so looking forward to a Nadal-Fed quarter, with Fed edging it but being so shattered that Andy could make mincemeat of him in the semis. Will just have to make do with Andy making mincemeat anyway :)

Great for Lleyton, bit of a shame for Stan. Sad to see Tipsy out, my favourite Serb.

Roll on Day 2!

Lest we forget, that in theory makes Andy's "eighth" easier as Tipsy was the (other) top 16 player in that eighth. The highest ranked opponent Andy could face until the QF is now Youzhny ranked 20.

Gutted for Rafa .... and for the tournament. Any tournament without Rafa is not as exciting (for me anyways). Andy is definately my no 1 but Rafa is a firm no 2. Very sad, but onwards and upwards for Andy.

Disappointing that the first day of Wimbly ended on such a sad note (for me and all the other Rafa fans). Even Andy's win couldn't cheer me up. Sigh. John McEnroe said at the beginning of yesterday's ESPN broadcast that he thought Rafa was the GOAT edging out Federer; everyone else laughed at him and of course they were brutal to him at the end of the show. Too bad. Not a good start to my fave tennis tournament. Just hope Andy can get to the very end.

Milos had a good win. Got to see the whole match. He seemed much better than the last few tourneys but we'll see how he progresses once he meets better players. He's in Ferru's quarter and Ferru has beaten him easily three or four times BUT grass is not Ferru's best surface so that may be an advantage should Milos get that far.

Whilst Brown was strong in the 4th and causes a big upset by taking it and the match 6-2 unfortunately Lleyton added to his troubles. So, Brown, Mannarinno, Paire, Robert or Kubot will reach the quarters! Can hardly believe this but now Cilic has pulled out with a knee injury!

I'm gutted Isner has pulled out... Really expected him to do well, besides now there is only one seed left in Fed's quarter for him to deal with... stupid luck fed has ended up with even though his draw on paper was the hardest...... :grrr:

Tsonga went two sets to 1 down and then pulled out, another big shock! so Andy's section also opening up but let's take one match at a time! of course the next match may be a bit tougher. Even if Troicki playing well think you'd take that over Tsonga or Cilic even if that would have been a more entertaining match and you do want some sort of test before possible semi.

I honestly think that if Fed tanks in the USO and the WTF this year (= less than semis in the former, final in the latter) he might retire. I cannot see him hanging around out of the top four making up the numbers.

I could not believe it and just checked. It is Wednesday and Andy has no top ten players in his half of the draw left!

Rafa, Federer, Tsonga and Cilic all gone! Almagro(15) and Youznhy (20) the only top 20 players left! :cauldron:

I've been out all day (a cheering-ourselves-up outing in London with a dozen other Rafa fans - we did the same thing last year) but did see the last set of Andy's match in a pub (also did that last year). Of course we were all checking how other matches were going and were amazed at the frequent news of yet another withdrawal. We were joking that at this rate the final would be Feli v Pico. When I left to come home Fed-Stak was 1 set all. When I was driving home from the station I heard that Fed was out! Amazing. All the column inches that were written about the expected quarterfinal between Fed & Rafa and they are both out.

On the face of it, Andy's draw has improved immeasurably - who would have thought that both Rafa and Fed would be out? But we can't be complacent - if you include Hopman Cup, Andy's H2H against Robredo is 2-3.

This is the first time neither Roger Federer nor Rafael Nadal have made the third round of a grand slam they have both played in.

This is Federer's first loss to a man outside the top 100 since he lost to the 101st-ranked Richard Gasquet in Monte Carlo in 2005.

This is Federer's earliest Wimbledon exit since a first-round loss to Mario Ancic in 2002.

The earliest Wimbledon defeat for a defending champion since 2003 when Lleyton Hewitt lost to Ivo Karlovic .

Federer has just one Grand Slam title to his name in his past 14 major tournament appearances dating back to the 2010 French Open. Even more telling, he's made just two tournament finals over that time.

Have you tweeted that? If not I will . . .
It was just a jest on my part based on a jokey comment on twitter.
I was trying to think of a spoof headline. e.g.

"Mallorcan fishing village over-run with flounders"
Rafa Nadal was shocked to see what his nets had landed when he checked them at dusk today in Mallorca. The local resident had zoomed off to his home haven after losing in R1 of the grass Grand Slam and resorted to his favourite past-time of fishing and at a local competition.

Imagine his surprise to find Roger Federer floating alongside his pitch ... and in stellar company. To whit, Sharapova, Tsonga, Azarenka and assorted other ex-No 1 tennis players who had escaped from Wimbledon in R2 via the emergency underground tunnels.

Even more of a shock - they didn't fancy being BBQ'd for supper. Oh no.

They wanted a share of Rafa's waterfront to try and win SOMETHING between now and the 7th July even if the prize turned out to be a jug of sangria at the local taverna.

Uncle Toni was most put out: "It's not cricket, no?"

An application has been submitted to the International Court of Appeal in the Hague to ship all 39 escapees across the Atlantic to Newport where it's understood they can fish for cod whilst waiting for a few others to join them in a mug of Campbells soup.

BTW - Stepanek also withdrew with injury.

He went on to win the US Open (beating Agassi in the final) and then retired from tennis immediately after. :)

I love how Andy's draw has opened up! However, there have been so many upsets, I'm not counting my chickens, and there's still a certain Mr. Djokovic to consider! ;) But, if nothing else, I'd assume the amount of points Fed has dropped means Andy's no.2 ranking is a bit more secure (?). :)

Take care... :)

I'm worried about these two players along with Gulbis upsetting Andy. Hope Andy stays focussed and takes one match a time but I'm sure that Ivan will keep Andy on the right road. ;)

It depends who shocked Djokovic - there are some danger players, eg Berdych {he has reached a Wimbledon final} and Delpo in that half that I'd rather Andy didn't have to meet if he reaches that far. Who knows too that one of the young players, eg Milos and Grigor, might not be inspired by the defeats of Rafa and Fed and cause damage. Grigor has won the Junior Wimbledon title. It's time too that one of the youngsters made a breakthrough.

I think Andy will be very well aware of danger having seen the how the great have fallen - he's not going to take any match lightly after yesterday.

I too have fears about some of those left in. Actually my overall FTM for Wimbly, apart from Wawrinka, is currently not looking as daft as I thought when I did it! I've got a return match between Dimi and Nole in the semis and neither Rafa nor Fed featured in my prediction.

On Sunday I was excited for Wimbly to start but for some reason I felt very nervous for Andy this year and was a bit worried about his draw. Now that Rafa and Fed are both out (oh how I cheered Sergiy last night), I am not any less nervous. There are still some tricky customers to get past and after yesterday's drama, its anyone's guess who is going through each round. That said, Andy has looked comfortable in both his matches so far and I am absolutely certain he will only be looking at his next match and not getting ahead of himself.

There are some matches I really don't think its possible to call - Melzer v Stakhovsky? Possibly Stakh is slight favourite after yesterday. Almagro v Janowicz? Gulbis v Verdasco? Those 2 I think are really hard. As is Troicki v Youzhny. Have to think that Monaco will get through. The quarter that did have Federer is wide open though, its a real chance for these players to make an even bigger name for themselves.

Goodness, we're only on Day 4 - not sure how much of this tension I can take. Just so long as its not a Murraycoaster, its good fun! :)

Never mind the dratted platforms....what is needed is continuity on the main channels. I feel sorry for people who are at work or have to be out of the house as recording is impossible. Why can't they have dedicated tennis channels, say BBC3 and 4 for the 2 weeks of the tournament? Even in the house, if you go outside to bring washing in or go to the loo the match you are watching could have been moved by the time you get back. Makes be wish Euro Sport had it as well.

Yes, I was at this match. Was really enjoying it. The players didn't seem to have any opinion one way or another when they suspended and it was just spitting at the time, very light and in fact stopped for a few minutes just after they left. It had been like this for probably 30 minutes before they stopped play. Would have thought Dimitrov would have wanted to continue as he had to come out and hold serve today. He did fall earlier in the match but it didn't seem to cause him any problems. His fall today seemed worse as he wasn't even really moving at the time.

... and forum member LizCurran has tweeted this to me:

@SallyDaisy10is (https://twitter.com/SallyDaisy10is) I am 1652 and I joined the queue at about 8pm last night
(straight from Andy's match). Today v busy

@SallyDaisy10is (https://twitter.com/SallyDaisy10is) all week has been busier than previous years - so I'm told. Thanks - am looking forward to a good day :) got a ct2 tic
This is because:-
- it's Saturday so more people have the day off to head to Wimbledon for ground passes
- the pre-booked seats will be sold out
- so the ground capacity is reached once the queue cards reach a certain number (between 6000 and 8500 including the first 1500 which are for Centre, Court 1 and Court 2, 500 of each).

After that no-one gets into Wimbledon until someone else leaves ... and in reality that's probably from about 3pm onwards.

It was wonderful to see the Gold medal winners and the Forces receiving such a huge welcome by Centre Court crowd. I was thinking "Where's Andy?" and then Sue said "Have we missed someone?" or words to that effect, said things about his Olympic and US Open triumphs and up the steps he came. The spectators were fantastic...on their feet and rousing cheers and applause. I had a lump in my throat as Andy stood there and received a truly marvellous reception. He looked great, if a little shy and was shaking hands all around. Only what he deserves as we all know.:gold::bravo::GBflag:

Look up the H2H for Andy & Youzhny on the ATP website (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=Y061). They look like a couple of criminals in the dock who've just been handed very long sentences! Hilarious! (Why on earth do the ATP make them pose with such glum faces?)

Hey all just on my home was on centre today.. I turned into a bit of crazy girl when sue announced andy was in the royal box as I had accepted not seeing andy that day! It was amazing him coming on and gettingthe cheer he did there was a lot of murray love.. Djoko scarily good but chardy barely woke up until the end when he rallied slightly. The ddifference between djoko and the tomic gasquet match though was huge.. Novak and Andy seem worlds apart from anyone else at the mo. Can't wait for Monday!

I was lucky enough to go to Wimbledon after all yesterday and had tickets on Centre Court, I couldn't believe it when Sue said "have I forgotten anybody" and then announced Andy, he got a standing ovation from the crowd, we were seated not to far from the Royal Box and after the ceremony quite a few of the Olympians wanted to have their photos taken with Andy. We went to tea when Stosur was on and got talking to a young man who was in the Navy and was policing the Members area of Centre Court, he then got out his phone and showed us a photo of him and another Steward with Andy he said he had asked Ross to take the photo so obviously Ross was with Andy. Had a lovely day though quite tired today.
