Pennetta is a former top 10 player and despite her current low ranking this was a tough draw. Unfortunately Elena went down a double break in the 1st and though she fought back once the opener slipped away her challenge faded, Flavia though was on form.

Laura leading 4-3, on serve. Laura asking a few questions. I hope she gets an answer this game!
C'mon Laura!
What a return! She breaks!
Now stay calm and serve the set out! C'mon Laura!
Yes! No double faults in that set!

david1610
25-06-2013, 15:05
Laura now has an early break in the second leading 2-1.
A long way to go but so far Laura playing very, very well.
C'mon Laura! Holds to love 3-1.
C'mon Laura!
0-40 3 BPs. This could be massive. Take one! C'mon Laura!
Deuce... oh well. Keep the pressure on. C'mon Laura!
Sensation return! Laura with double break.4-1
Still work to do. Stay calm! C'mon Laura!
Eeek! Suddenly a BP against her as she suddenly looks a bit vulnerable for the first time. Deuce. But another and she is broken.
4-2 still a break up. Laura has to try and forget that game.
C'mon Laura!
4-3 though Laura had some better points there.
Right. Just has to serve two games like she has mostly been doing.
C'mon Laura!
It is getting really tight but she manages to hold to 30. 5-3
Now is she could break now and avoid serving it out.... c'mon Laura!
Not to be. Laura 5-3 and serving for the match.
C'mon Laura!

JAMES4578
25-06-2013, 15:14
Laura really impressive and looking more like a top 10 player than Kirkilenko at this point. Had 2 bps for double break but Deuce and now another chance, come on Robbo! She takes it and surely firmly in the driving seat. Tightened up slightly as Kiri gets something going and 4-1 becomes 4-3,needs to step it up again.

Laura wins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :)

david1610
25-06-2013, 15:41
Actually, she did not just win, she did not really give her top ten opponent much of a chance, except for a little bit of a wobble at the end.
For once V. Wade made a very astute comment during the match "Kirilenko is not used to get a beating like this and the only person you could think of of doing something similar would be Serena".

Best I have seen Laura. Think Miles has already had an effect.
Well done Laura!

Yay Laura! She played so well, and managed to get over the finishing line in spite of nerves getting to her somewhat.

Enjoying the Tara Moore v Kaia Kanepi match too. 1 set apiece.

As a general comment - I really like the Wimbledon courts in the first week. Lovely low bounce that enables players to hit within the natural tennis arc of stroke playing.

This means that the likes of Errani, Kirilenko etc can't moon ball their way out of trouble. Also rewards the big hitters - such as Laura Robson.

I just wish that the courts didn't quite turn into generic hard courts in week 2.. *cue mutterings about "that designer grass" and ramblings about the good old days*

Oh.. KK v Tara Moore such a dramatic match. BIG (but correct) overrule from Umpire when KK serving at 30-40, 5-5 in final set.

KK won that set 7-5 and therefore the match - but it could have been so easily been Moore serving for the match at 6-5.

Yes. She wobbled losing one of the breaks serving to go 5-1 but what I particularly liked was in her interview she started thinking about winning the match then, got distracted, but then went back to one point at a time. Love the ability to switch back.
Frankly, it was like watching Laura showing her true potential without the weaker stuff like the DFs getting in the way. I think it flabbergasted some of the commentators and if she can keep this level of focus up against those who on paper are "easier" this could really be her breakout tournament - not just showing she can surprise the best but, like Sloane Stephens has done, she is ready to move in that direction!
Once again, good job Miles as well!

As Martina said, Laura's main problem is movement and as Boris said, that's an awful lot easier to sort out than a problem with your forehand or serve. Just needs time and hard work.

There was a point very early on where Maria gave her a drop shot, and you could almost see the "heard you do not get to these" thinking and Laura sprinted and not only got to it but hit a deep court winner. Maria did not try one again! Another significant step, or should that be steps! :)

Spare a thought for Aranxta Rus. Defeat for the the young Dutchwoman today means that she has now lost 17 WTA main draw matches in a row..

In fact, she now has the record for consecutive defeats in the Women's tour in the Open Era - sharing it with Sandy Collins who set this record in 1987.

It shows how fortunes can change. Rus reached the 4th round at Roland Garros last year, and knocked Kim Clijsters out at RG in 2011.

Enjoyed Ladies Day. Watched Serena and all our girls' matches. Thought Laura played so well. Some terrific shots and her serves weren't half bad either. Miles seems to have made a difference already though I know she enjoys the big stage. There was a definite improvement in mobility and I thought she was just wonderful even though she seemed to tighten up or lose focus slightly towards the end. Heather played well also and my opinion is that if she had been fully fit and healthy she could have won. Enjoyed Tara's match also as she did fight and won a set. Very close and dramatic match. Hope she can build on that result.

This will be very interesting for Larcher Brito who is still only 20 and a couple of years ago looked like she was one of the new rising teenagers in that first main season. Then she slipped back under the top 100 and the radar This might kickstart an upward progression. Well we have to have something to hold on to in Portugal!

Had to go out before the end of Tara's match last night, then saw the last two games in a pub. She was really fighting in that last game and saved 3 or 4 match points. However she has had a lot of very close losses and needs to find out how to close out a match. She also needs to improve her serve - I noticed when I was watching her at Eastbourne that she doesn't get many first serves in, and her second serve is very weak. If she could sort that out I'm sure she could go far as she seems to have plenty of determination.

Tara & Mel lost the first set to Soler-Espinoza and Suarez-Navarro, currently 4-4 in the 2nd. Update - eek a tiebreak

Slater & Whybourn a set up against Cornet & Parmentier, currently 5-6 (on serve) in the 2nd. Update - now it's one set all.

Update - Tara & Mel lost. Tara will be really fed up as she tweeted the other day about how she keeps losing matches on tiebreaks

Well in a way she is almost doing two in a row tomorrow as she has the doubles later on!

I don't know. If :cauldron:
she gets through, and ESPECIALLY as some of the automatic choices for centre court have been knocked out, I would not automatically say she could not get centre court again. She is also a member of the club, lives down the road, reigning Olympic silver medallist achieved at Wimbledon, going for her second last 16 chance, Britain's only other singles representative, darling of Wimbledon. I would not think it certain but I also would not bet against it!

28-06-2013, 13:31
And she takes the match! 6-4 6-1. Tested a little but once she conquered the nerves, fine!
Interesting third round... she plays Marina Erakovic, whom Heather had doubles success with last year. They played doubles togther at Estoril (yes I saw the match :) ) the day before Laura parted company with her ex-coach.
Hope she handles the "playing a friend" issue well. Erakovic knocked out Peng the No. 24 seed in the previous round.
So once again, tricky but very doable!

Yes and in a way that made it more difficult for her. At the end she got a standing ovation and was very bashful.
Just as important to learn to handle being favourite!
Do not know what Miles has said to her, but there is a noticeable calming before the second serves as if she is saying "Wait until you are ready. Don't rush. You have the right to take your time and get that ball toss right". And the power of the shots on grass.
Good luck Laura!

Laura comfortably through; do we already know whom she will play next?

She's playing New Zealander Marina Erakovic - who is generally more of a doubles specialist.

Marina is ranked 71 ro Laura's 38 - so Laura will once again start as favourite to win. However - Marina did claim a scalp of her own by beating 24 seed Shuai Peng in her round 2 match.

This match is scheduled to take place on court number 2 tomorrow after Misha Youzhny v Viktor Troiki match.

imo she already has a lot of the mental strength in place already - but predominantly when her back is against the wall, when she fights so well. I recall her saving many match points in tour matches last year. Managing weight of expectation, nervy starts and some element of closing matches out a little - things probably to work on.

Marina will be gutted as she got so close - and certainly nerves got the better of her. Laura also very lucky when she had set point in the second set. Marina had already saved that point had it not been for in incorrect line call and 'replay the point'. A double fault from Marina then followed.

Great result from Laura, of course!! It will be either Alison Riske or Kaia Kanepi in the next round for her. Both of these are big hitters as well. Might be like a heavyweight boxing match.

Yes, I was not saying that the glass was empty, but rather half full. There is no doubt that the performance of Laura and Marina throughout the match was greatly influenced by nerves, in different ways and at different times for both.
Laura has the fighting qualities and once she has the experience to deal with her nerves at the start, she will be formidable. As I have repeatedly said on her forum, this year is still about growing and getting eexperience.
And talking of Laura, her doubles match is about to start!

Laura Robson clearly gutted in press. At a whisper for most of it. #wimbledon

Courtney Nguyen ‏@FortyDeuceTwits 3m

Odd question: Laura Robson asked why she didn't do a post-match celebration after the match. "Because I lost. I was just trying not to cry."

I should think Laura is even more gutted now Serena has gone out.

Gutted for Laura - she will know exactly how many chances she had to take that first set, yet still couldn't do it. No consolation right now to be told "her time will come" - although no doubt it will.

So thrilled for Sabine and I didn't feel this was like Stakovski putting Fed out and then promptly going out himself in the next round. Sabine is strong and promised much before all her injuries. I hope her time is coming. Laura can learn from her - she's another player with power. Plenty of time for Laura yet - she's a mere baby in the scheme of things. Great strides in the last 12 months IMHO.

Sabine did say in her post-win interview she was not going to celebrate her win because she knew she still had tough matches to play. So I think she is way more mature than the likes of Stakhovsky whose win went completely to his head. I feel she can deal with Kanepi. I really, REALLY, hope she wins the whole tournament!!!

Actually quite thrilled for Flipper. 2003 Junior champ, couldn't even get through Wimby qualies last year, and resurgence with help of Kim Clijsters.

Here's a tweet from Kim;:

Still drying my eyes :-)) So proud of how @FlipperKF handled the big occasion for the first time!

Petra must be gutted though. I think she wasn't well. But she's SO erratic that the result not that much of a surprise tbh.

Bartoli v Flipkens

There will be a first-time slam winner. A fairy tale outcome for someone there.

Indeed a most unexpected lineup other than Radwanska really. Pity we don't have at least one former champion around but obviously a chance for some one to make a name for themselves. Pity petra didn't make it but great match from Flipkens even of Kvitova hadn't been feeling well. Pleased Aga and Sabine still going strong and great that Lisicki was able to follow up the terrific win over Serena. Tough they face of in the semis, would prefer a Radwanska win but fan of both and imagine champion will come from this half.

I think it's pretty exciting we don't have any former champs. Lovely to see a new champ crowned - for a change, instead of the same old, same old. I hope it's either Aga or Lisicki. Altho' I don't mind Bartoli either. Don't mind any of 'em!

I pretty much agree with this.

When watching the highlights on bbc2 tonight, there were several backhanded comments made about the semi final lineup, which was pretty irritating.

They're all seeded players and 3 of the 4 have been to the semis of a slam at least once before, if not the final.

Sabine and Aga both certainly thoroughly deserve to make the semis. Aga has fought through 3 tough 3-setters against very different opponents - Madison Keys, Tsveti Pironkova, Li Na. All very good grass court players.

Sabine has knocked out 3 former slam champions in the form of Serena, Stosur, Schiavone, along with Vesnina (Eastbourne champ) and Kanepi (former Semi Finalist). Quite a lineup!

Flipkens is a really interesting one. Here's an article on her in the New York times from earlier in the year http://straightsets.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/04/01/flipkenss-fabulous-turnaround-vaults-her-into-top-25/?_r=0

She's had blood clots, back injury, wrist injury - funding removed by Belgian sports federation - and was ranked about 280 just 12 months ago. She's 5 foot 5, and is supremely courageous against big Amazonian hitters like Kvitova and suchlike. She was the junior Wimbledon champ in 2003 that got outgrown by her peers. She deserves the luck of this draw imo.

Yeah, Bartoli is quite eccentric, to put it mildly. How many other players have kicked out their own fathers during a match? At Wimbledon too - against either Pennetta or Schiavone, I think. She just doesn't look like a typical tennis player. She's said that she'd have sponsorship (for clothing) had she been thinner, taller and blonder. Quite a dry sense of humour, then. She's had the luck of the draw too.

They are all quite different in terms of their playing style. The remaining 3 matches will all be quieter ones too!! I am intrigued as to how they pan out. The finalist in the top half of the draw will probably be the favourite in the final - but that hasn't exactly counted for much in the tournament so far..

I actually quite like Marion. She's a really hard worker and she's actually very sweet off court. Yes, her on court ticks are maddening but I admire her tenacity and her passion. I was reminding my husband last night about the final she was in against Venus and she was so taken with Pierce Brosnan watching her match. He sent her a bouquet afterwards when he found out what a huge fan of his she was. Sweet!

Can't believe where Bartoli stands to receive the first serve - where most people stand to receive the second and the double handed fore and backhands - what power and speed for someone who's hardly sveldt.

Still want Lisicki to go all the way. She's the one who got through Serena and I'm not sure the others would have, so she's cleared the path for the last 4 and I'd like her to get her reward for that.

Good news for Bartoli, I thought she would win that quite easily. Glad she got through really, after all the upsets in the second half of the draw I think she is the right person to be in the final from that half of the draw - from the other half of the draw I don't really mind who wins that as either of them vs Bartoli should be a good Women's final. Happy about this result! Good job Bartoli! :cheer:
