So, not long to go before we see him back in action ...

Was it Toronto you went to and met Michael??? I thought that was in 2009 but it must have been 2010 because of the alternating years.

Yes, it was 2010. I haven't been since. Last year was just after the Olympics and not a great event as it turned out. Michael and I had a great time. It was really wonderful to watch the quarters and final together with someone who's just as obsessed with Andy as me.
Really looking forward to seeing Andy play again :boogie: And work shouldn't get in the way too much as it will on in the evenings :)

Will Feds ranking have dropped by the time Montreal starts?
RoastLamb

I wonder if they'll give him a cake celebrating the Wimbly win like they did last year with the Olympic gold medal cake?
It's great to be seeded #2.
Now that federer is 5 and nadal is 3 is there a chance of fed quarters, nadal semis? Would love to see him power through a draw like that in a non grand slam event. So believe he could do that now.
I know it will be "work as usual" for Andy - yet so much has changed. I still wonder how he's feeling - a whole mix of emotions I would imagine.

Well, Andy beat Rafa in the semis and Fed in the final in 2010. Been there, done that.

I don't think what's in the first post is the rankings as of now but as of 24 June - they hadn't done the seedings when that was posted - they are to be based on the situation at 29 July. Or have I got the wrong end of your post?
Madeline
30-07-2013, 18:41
No, you have that right. That is at the time of the publication of the entry list - he should still be seeded 5.
I read somewhere that there is a chance Federer may be withdrawing because of his back.

Federer is definitely out of Montreal ... as might be Cilic.
"I am disappointed not to be playing in Montreal next week. It is a great tournament with amazing fans. I look forward to competing there in the future."
His facebook-page.
Mike Dickson @Mike_Dickson_DM (https://twitter.com/Mike_Dickson_DM) 2h (https://twitter.com/Mike_Dickson_DM/status/363314108088586243) Interesting withdrawals from Montreal next week (first Masters level post Wimbledon): Roger Federer (back) Marin Cilic (?).

02-08-2013, 17:48
The ATP really has to make a public statement about what is happening with Cilic - "justice has not only to be done but be seen to be done" and all that - please correct me if they have, but, if not, speculation does not help anyone.
Roger- even given his ego I still would like to give him a break and see what he does from now on - he still has the chance, if this does prove to be the beginning of the end, to show some humility.

Excuse double post but I think it is worth sharing that the last nine winners of this tournament have been the big four, all with two wins except Nole with three!
A certain Ivan Lendl won it six times in the 1980s!
Was trying to find information about the draw and there is this ambiguous post on the official site
"The three Grand Slam champions in 2013 will practice on Centre Court. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic will start things off at 10 a.m. Andy Murray and Richard Gasquet will follow at 11:30 a.m. and Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer will practice at 1 p.m. The site will open at 9 a.m. and access to Centre Court will be free from Friday through to Sunday during the Hygrade and POM Family Weekend from August 2-4.
The official draw will also take place at 4 p.m. on the Casino de Montréal stage and will be open to the public."
Not sure if that means Friday or Saturday!
The qualifying starts tomorrow early so if they are doing that draw at the same time, could be quite soon. Or are they not doing that?

Montréal, AM route: R2: Dimitrov/Granollers; R3: Fognini/Baghdatis/Gulbis/López; QF: del Potro/Raonic; SF: Ferrer / Berdych; FI: Nole / Rafa
So, Andy's probable route: Bye, Granollers, Fognini, Del Potro, Ferrer, Djoko/Rafa
Could be worse :cauldron:
david1610
02-08-2013, 21:55
That is quite tricky - have not kept up with Dimitrov but hope Andy has banished slow starts to tournament; Fognini has just broken into the top twenty; interesting to see if del Potro is on form.... mmm.
But on the other hand if Andy has his winning winning set, if necessary reset mindset mentality, it will be up to him.

Draw could be worse for Andy but he'll have to be on his toes from the off against Dimitrov if that's who he meets in R2. Granollers is still in Kitzbuhel where he's up against Juan Monaco in the Final so he won't reach Canada until tomorrow sometime which gives him very little time to acclimatise/get over jetlag to play a R1 match against Dimitrov.

Federer is definitely out of Montreal ... as might be Cilic.
I hate to say this but I am beginning to feel sorry for Federer. It cannot be any fun sliding down the rankings, being beaten by opponents that he would have eaten up 2 years ago, and not being fully fit.
Frankly I don't understand why he doesn't retire gracefully. The money is not important to him and the thought of him struggling is pretty horrible even though I never liked him. He obviously enjoys the tour and cant see himself without tennis - but surely the family cant travel with him so much now the twins are getting older

I can't think Andy will be happy with the schedulers. If one of the main factors for playing doubles was to get court time before his singles then that's been scuppered. Zimonjic & Benneteau played their final in Washington (same time zone as Montreal) early on Sunday whereas Granollers had a much tougher 3 set final in AUSTRIA and he's on today's schedule. Benneateau is playing singles and is first on court today but surely priority should be given to the #2 seed and their doubles match could have been played at the end of today's schedule.

Some of the scheduling of these events gets beyond belief. From time to time players question Wimbledon's court planning but they are masters of the art compared to some of these tournaments

In my hotel room watching Frankie on the telly and Vashy on the computer. Both F & V lost their first sets 5-7 then won their second 7-6 and now both are battling it out in the third.
Wow! They both win - Vashy beating John Isner. :yahoo:
Fantastic win by Pospisil, the 2 returns when down in the final set tie-break were magnificent. Not a fan of Isner (the man or the player) so any early exit is more than welcome.
With Isner losing it means his ranking drops to 21 and Canada will have more players in the top 20 than the USA.
Granollers beat Dimitrov 6-4 6-4 which is a surprise to me given he must be jet-lagged but is obviously on a run after last week, maybe it will catch up with him tomorrow. ;)

Too bad also for Filip but he did take a set off Istomin so  for him. Btw: Jesse Levine is Canadian, he was born in Ottawa but moved to Florida when he was 12 because his brother was ill with a lung problem and needed hot weather all throughout the year.

I didn't realize Potty and Ferru played last night because right after Milos finished there was a rain delay so I assumed they shut up shop. oops.
If Potty's back is bothering him maybe Milos has a slim chance to beat him? Vashy has no chance vs Berdy.
no chance ?? I agree its slim , but you never know

Early break in the 2nd for Janovic
nadal coming back, negates jerzy's break, rats!
jerzy playing well again, just needs to drop the dfs, 8 so far, and the dodgy droppers. andy will be late on court at this rate
and suddenly jerzy drops serve, so rafa can serve for it at 5-4, rats!
rafa serves it out, nae probs, but jerzy beat himself there, so many UEs, dfs, and his drop shots were either fantastic or pants.

Raonic should have been honest and admitted it. This will run and run!

the raonic v gulbis game should be a cracker, the raygun has a 3-0 lead in the H2H, (but andy had a 5-0 H2H yesterday!)
It is fortunate for Raonic that he's playing in Canada as you can imagine what kind of reception he would receive otherwise. His smug comment to the press that "I was fortunate that line judge didn't see it. It's a lucky thing for me in my sense, unlucky for him…” only compounded his "mistake". He's going to have to work hard to gain respect from other players after this.

Great win tho' Straight sets over #6 player in the world. And t'other Canuck took out the #7 player. Amazing day for Cdn tennis.
But then why did Raionic say in the presser he was lucky he had not seen it?
Isn't it an unwritten rule that players own up when they touch the net? del Potro is a gentle giant and was clearly upset. Whether the ball was dead or not, Raonic would have gained a lot of credit had he admitted he had touched the net and overall replaying the point seemed to be the natural fairplay option.
Sorry RL, but Raonic gone down big time in my estimation after that.

I agree with you but one wonders how much MoLay did see. In the slowmo afterwards he did look at Milos' feet. So I'm assuming he made a decision right there and then based on the ball's placement.
I only saw it on the hilights , but agree Milos should have owned up if the umpire missed it
But hes human , and he made a mistake , like we all have .
Yes but show some contrition about your mistake and not be cocky to the press afterwards.
I havent seen his presser . Was he "cocky" ? Will go find it.
could only find a portion of the interview
When asked if he should have called it on himself he said
" its a big point . I dont know if you can put somebody in the situation , being down break point, same thing happens - do you call it on yourself "
dont think that sounds " cocky " but unsportsmanlike
Listen , i agree , he should have admitted he touched the net , and replayed the point , but people who didnt like him before ,will take this and run with it , like alot of other situations that have taken place in sports.

first set raonic, on a tb. was penalised for time leaving him ad down in the 5-6 game. raygun serves first in second.
some scintillating rallies, but most times just shoves down his unreadable serves, gulbis hasn't the power so needs to be more inventive
wow, gulbis just got a break in first game of set 2
gulbis about to serve for set 2
and makes it, first time he has taken a set off the raygun, but he threw in 2 dfs, a foolish missed smash. but was ad down and served strongly to win thru
raonic serving first in set 3
raygun finally held serve in first game, 9mins, 5deuces. raygun puts in languid shots that he thinks are winners, but gulbis will keep sprinting in and winning the point
break each way now, gulbis chucked in 4dfs to go down, but then came back next game, just ran and fought for it
gulbis at 2-3 now
raonic won 6-4 in third,by virtue of serving first in the set.

rats! double rats!! raygun wins the tb, just. popsy kept hauling in back on serve, but a forehand long, and then the raygun actually scored with an inside out forehand for a winner. rats! I'm a bad loser!

Double rats. Hope Rafa or Nole blast him off the court!

I like Popsy's style of play & his lack of arrogance--can't say the same about Raonic!!
Given time Popsipil will be the better player I'm sure - he moves so much better than Raonic. It seemed to me that the crowd were behind Popsy too. I really hope Novak or Rafa puts Raonic in his place tomorrow.

from that point of view, i hope djo wins, he will flatten the raygun, rafa will just exhaust him
Vamos Rafa! :swingin: Hope he is OK - someone who is there reported that he had taping on his back
nadal is outhitting djo at the mo, and he got a break in the first game, leading 3-2

Rafa in the lead so going up to watch in bed. Hope I'll stay awake but going on my record for the week could be finding out who won tomorrow. Bye all.
djo has just lost his serve again, ended with a df! he is exasperated and uravelling sllghtly
nadal to serve at 5-2 for the first set
but djo wins that game, he's serving at 3-5, still a break down
over to rafa, serving for the set again at 5-4
and this time rafa makes it, 6-4
rafa is looking incredibly fierce and playing so aggressively he has surprised djo. djo still fighting, of course, and will serve first.
don't think i want to stay awake much longer tho

Nole a bit out of sorts earlier even if Rafa was playing well but got it back to 4-5.

Another great contest between these two but pity it fizzled out a bit in the breaker. However Rafa was just a bit better overall and Nole erred in some crucial points.

Amazing match between Djoko and Rafa. So happy and relieved Rafa won tho'. Dream final for me. A Canuck vs one of my fave players of all time. Either way I'm happy. I can't see Milos winning but it's great he managed to get to the final altho' I have to say I was kinda rooting for Vashy. But, great result for Vashy to get to the semi-final of his home tournament. Unreal, esp. when you consider he was playing a challenger this time last week.
Rafa was really sweet in his post match interview. He said he wasn't special and to say he was would be arrogant. Awww, love his humility.

I also think that Vashy is the better player, as he has a much better all-round game and doesn't rely on his serve as much as Milos. I don't think Milos is arrogant tho'. I can see why people might not care for him much and obviously I see him from a much different perspective but I think he's a decent bloke and has done so much for Canadian tennis.
Hoping to see both Rafa and Andy winning trophies later today! :cheer:

sky are showing highlights of the semi, now, channel 403
Rafa & Milos on court! Vamos Rafa! :swingin: Of course Rafa had the late match yesterday and a hard match too, so I hope he won't be feeling too tired!
Sorry to the Rafa fans but I would actually love to see Milos do well tonight!! He really deserves to finally get his name on a masters 1000s trophy!

Would be good to see at least a contest here but Rafa just dominating at the moment, Milos could do with a few more first serves and he's making little impression on return. Double and Nadal breaks again at start of 2nd.

Yawn glad im not bothering to heat up my laptop with a livestream very one sided.
What a huge gulf in class. I'm astonished that Raonic will be in the top 10 tomorrow as he really has nothing but his serve. If it were not for that, he would be ranked about 50.
ETA - watching the presentation ceremony now. Astonished that Raonic doesn't speak very good French (I guess I was mistaken in thinking that all Canucks are bilingual).
Rafa bites the unbiteable trophy. I remember him biting it in 2008 - it was a windy day then too.

Well done Rafa!!! That really was a clinic. Bit of a damp quib of a match in the end altho' not too surprising. Great to see Rafa hold the trophy for the third time. He had his first hardcourt win back in 2005 in Montreal.

We're not all bilingual I'm afraid but Vashy speaks fluent French.

I know, I was there to see him - so awesome!!! That was another one-sided win. I seem to recall he beat Nicolas Kiefer 6-3 6-2.

well of course there is a huge gulf , no comparison really but Im sure Milos will have learned a valuable lesson today . Lots of work to be done !!
He spoke the truth when he said that Rafa gave him a tennis clinic today . Still great to have a Canadian in the Rogers Cup final . Hopefully the next time a Canadian makes a masters final , it will be a better match
Congrats to Rafa !!!

And it must have been so nervewracking for him playing his FIRST Masters title at home. Can't even imagine that kind of pressure (Andy could, of course). I'm just so pleased for him (and Vashy) - great week for them both.

Yeah , Im sure the top guys remember what it was like playing in their 1st masters final.
I actually think that Vasek would have had a better chance in the final , and that he will turn out to be the better player in the long run.
