Sportsnet (http://www.sportsnet.ca/tennis/canadas-raonic-still-struggling-decision-pull-olympics/) - Interview with Raonic about withdrawing from the Olympics and he doesn't mention the zika virus. He does have an almost robotic way of speaking "emotional factor to zero". ;) The comments on the article make interesting reading. One refers to him as "Bathroom Break Raonic", I think that might stick. :big grin:

His best one must be when he took over minutes when playing Jack Sock at the Paris Bercy Masters!

And also interesting to note that he will continue to work with Mac, but NOT in tournament weeks (Cincy and Toronto).

I remember a time ( the robotic no emotion thingy ) when alot of people said that About Andy
Raonic did say recently that his calmness comes from bottling up his emotions but that McEnroe had told him the way to be truly great was to try and get them out more on the court. During Wimbledon we started to see another side of him. Jokey, emotional, I imagine we'll start seeing more of that
Also does anyone else think djoko is going to pull out of the Olympics?
Also does anyone else think djoko is going to pull out of the Olympics?
Not at all. Nole has not won the Olympics so he wants it badly.
Also does anyone else think djoko is going to pull out of the Olympics?
He said earlier in the year that Rio was his priority. I know things change but I'm pretty sure he still wants that gold medal. My guess is he'll play the Rogers Cup and the Olympics and give Cinci a bye to give himself a rest before the US Open. .

Pretty sure you are right. Djoko wont like the fact that Andy has reached a peak that he hasnt
Cincinnati is the only Master's title Djokovic hasn't won so he might be reluctant to give it a miss. He must have been hoping Andy et al were going to skip Cinci instead of Toronto. ;)
The ITF have produced an e-book My Life, My Medal (http://itf.uberflip.com/i/699819-2016-itf-olympic-book) about player's Olympic experiences. Andy's contribution is on pages 182-185.
Interesting section from Federer's contribution.

I just wondered because a few weeks ago he said that he hadn't decided and that he was waiting on more advice from people including friends in Brazil. He said something about family after losing at Wimbledon that made me wonder if there were plans for more djoko babies. I know he hasn't won it but he may like his chances in four years too. I hope he does go if will be good to see a full field as so many have pulled out

BREAKING: International Tennis Federation clear all seven Russian tennis players to compete in the Rio Olympics #SSNHQ (https://mobile.twitter.com/hashtag/SSNHQ?src=hash)
JAMES4578
24-07-2016, 16:46
ITF Statement:
The findings in the McLaren report that describe systematic and widespread doping in Russia are of great concern to everyone involved in sport, including the International Tennis Federation.
Nonetheless, the ITF welcomes the decision of the IOC to permit clean athletes to compete in Rio 2016 and to let each International Federation determine the eligibility of its respective Russian athletes.
The eight Russian tennis players who have been nominated to compete in Rio have been subject to a rigorous anti-doping testing programme outside Russia, which included:
- A total of 205 samples collected since 2014, of which;
- 83 (40%) were collected In-Competition and 122 (60%) Out-of-Competition;
- 111 (54%) were urine samples and 94 (45%) were blood samples.
The ITF believes that this is sufficient for the seven Russian tennis players to meet the relevant requirement of today’s decision of the IOC Executive Board.
The ITF will also be seeking confirmation from WADA that none of those players, or the Russian Tennis Federation, were implicated in the McLaren report, in accordance with the IOC decision.
The ITF believes it is right that clean athletes are permitted to compete in Rio 2016 and looks forward to welcoming the Russian tennis players, along with all other nominated athletes, to Rio.

According to Mallorcan Media (http://cadenaser.com/emisora/2016/07/26/radio_mallorca/1469552325_032056.html) Nadal may only play doubles in Rio as his wrist has still not recovered. He cancelled a planned practice with Andy today.
Federer has withdrawn from Rio. Discussion in the Federer thread.

Does anybody know when the events players are playing will be announced. Of course particularly wondering if Andy is going for male doubles with Jamie, or if he is also tempted to go for mixed doubles. If not, will Jamie go for mixed doubles with ??? etc.

The 16 pairs taking part in the mixed doubles will be announced on Tuesday 9th August. There are 12 direct acceptances which are selected by the ITF based on singles & doubles rankings as of 6 June. There are also 4 ITF places one of which is allocated to the host country if they don't already have a qualifying team (it was an ITF place that allowed Andy & Laura to play in London) and also to ensure there are representatives from each of the 6 ITF regions like Africa & Asia. It's almost certain that Andy or Jamie partnering Jo Konta would qualify for a direct acceptance but doubtful whether Heather Watson would based on her ranking.
I think in 2012, Andy only played mixed doubles because he and Jamie had already been knocked out of the men's doubles before entries had to be submitted for the mixed so assuming the Murray bros are still in the doubles (and Andy in the singles), it may be sensible if Jamie partners Jo.

So Fed will never get his Olympic Gold. .. Or indeed much else in the way of titles by the look of things.
By the time he comes back next year so many others will have passed him.
Sad in a way, can't believe I am feeling sorry for him but he must be gutted pulling out of Rio
Catching Connors most wins record was another he fancied I reckon, was always gonna be a tuff ask no chance now
The UK times (we're 4 hours ahead) at which tennis is scheduled in RIO. Starts on Saturday 6th August. The Centre Court has a day & night schedule for the first 5 days.
Centre Ct: 14:45-20:30 & 22:45-03:00. From QFs onward, one session: 16:00-00:00
Courts 1-9: 15:00-00:00
No prospect of marathon final sets at the Olympics. All sets will be completed with a tie-break if required.
Can someone please remind me - is the final at the Olympics a best of 5 match? I seem to remember Andy winning in three straight sets in London.

Just cant wait. The Rogers Cup has had some interesting matches but I just cant get too excited if nothing affects Andy. Sad (for a tennis fan) but true
How tough is this? Viktorija Golubic having collected her uniform and within days of flying to Rio is dropped from the Swiss team. Belinda Bencic's late withdrawal meant Martina Hingis was without a doubles partner so the only solution (other than Martina not going) was to pair her up with Timea Bacsinszky who was originally going to play with Golubic.
In contrast, as a result of withdrawals on the men's side there have been late call ups for Slovakian Andrej Martin, Yuichi Sugita and Taro Daniel from Japan, also the Ratiwatana brothers from Thailand in the doubles.
Baggy has withdrawn.
Who is Baggy?????
Who is Baggy?????
Baghdatis.
Baggy has withdrawn.
That's a shame. He is one of my favourites. Also the only one to snaffle a set of Mr M in London 2012. It's seemingly more and more a big mistake having the Olympics in Rio. Is it Zika, or the fact there are no points available?
if I were a woman intending to become pregnant I would research it, but Rio, Brazil are politically and economically unstable - Remind you of anywhere?
Baghdatis's withdrawal is due to an elbow injury.
The latest withdrawals are Alexander Zverev and the Bryan brothers.
Zverev on his instagram:
Unfortunately, I have had to withdraw from the Olympics. During my last two ATP matches in Washington and Toronto, I did not feel 100% and after several consultations with doctors and my team, we have decided that I must withdraw from the Olympics. I hope to be back in full form for the ATP
The Bryans are citing health concerns (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/early-lead/wp/2016/07/30/defending-gold-medalist-bryan-brothers-withdraw-from-olympics-citing-health-concerns/).

If Andy, Novak and Rafa bag all the medals no one will even notice/ remember the withdrawals-other than Feds
doubt Isner & Querrey will be missed at all , and the Bryans are nearing the end I think

Yes Men's singles is only best of 5 in the final, in 2012 Andy beat Djokovic 7-5,7-5 in the semis before beating Federer 6-2,6-1,6-4

Pity for Martina having lost 2 original partners and now out of mixed entirely, hopefully can go well with Timea-hasn't being doing so well lately though.
she like any other drug cheet should have been given life time olympic bans
Given the hectic summer schedule that Andy has, I will be surprised if he plays mixed doubles. My guess is that Jamie will play with Johanna and Dom with Heather - if they have a high enough ranking to qualify that is.

I wonder if there's still a chance Andy may be the GB flag carrier. According to Matthew Pinsent on twitter just now:
Matthew Pinsent @matthewcpinsent
As it stands @andy_murray may march - depends on men's single draw.
The GB flag bearer is due to be announced on Thursday which is when the tennis draw will be made. Whether it's singles or in doubles, Andy will be playing on Saturday but maybe if it's a kind first round draw he will attend. Pinsent says only 55 of the TeamGB's 360 athletes are planning to march in the opening ceremony.

Such a shame the first match is the day after the ceremony. I don't think they would choose someone who has to compete the next day to carry the flag and I doubt whether GB would choose a tennis player. I know plenty other countries have but GB has plenty of other choices.
If it doesn't effect his play, I hope he does march. Did he in Beijing? Being the GB Flag Bearer would be awesome for him. I am quite relaxed about these Olympics. I hope he wins or gets a medal, but nothing can beat his little caper at London 2012. I didn't want Federer to get a singles gold. It's great that Mr M has something that Federer hasn't got. I don't want Djokovic to get the Gold for the same reason. Getting a Doubles medal with Jamie would be great as well. Other than that I am not too bothered.
In London the tennis players were advised not to go to the ceremony as there would be hours of standing around, often the day before the first match. I guess the same will apply in Rio.

He did go to the Opening Ceremony after flying in quite late. He regretted it as he lost in the first round. He intimated that he was ill-prepared, tired and obviously suffering from change in time zones.
8 tennis players carried flags in London including Djokovic, Wawrinka & Sharapova who all played the following day and won. I remember commenting at the time about the GB team not being there and then the following day, Andy & Jamie and Ross & Colin lost their first round doubles matches to pairs who were at the opening ceremony. Maybe being sensible wasn't such a good idea and they missed out on the buzz of being at the Olympic Stadium and that incredible inspirational atmosphere.
One drawback in London was the distance from Wimbledon to the Olympic Park which is not an issue in Rio as it's all in one location. Also this being winter in Brazil, humidity is low unlike in Beijing.
I hope he does carry your flag !!
He could carry it in .... stay for a bit then go if he wanted to, being the star that he is !!

They may come to the athletes village closer to their events. Their holding camp seems to be for british athletes only & has very good facilities & accommodation. I may be wrong. Bardot will know better than me.!!
wow didnt know that , learned something today
They've got to spend that lottery money somehow, why not on a plush "holding camp". ;) Mark Foster was interviewed on BBC News and said that the location of an Olympic games is irrelevant to athletes (swimmers) and their entire focus is on the 50 metres of water in front of them and all distractions have to be reduced to a minimum. So much for the Olympic spirit and it's the taking part that counts. ;)
He did go to the Opening Ceremony after flying in quite late. He regretted it as he lost in the first round. He intimated that he was ill-prepared, tired and obviously suffering from change in time zones.
But, he's older and wiser now. He wasn't taking that Olympics (8 years ago) that seriously. He's flown in with enough time to prep and get used to the conditions and get over jetlag etc. I think carrying the flag would be fine and a great honour. I can't see him getting knocked out in the first round just because he was up later carrying a flag, or it affecting his tournament in any big way.

It's one argument why tennis shouldn't be an Olympic sport. It's not the pinnacle of their sport, and most who have got to the level where they have qualified have their own routines and don't want to be part of the whole Olympic village atmosphere. Let alone quite a few of the top players not even bothering. I know they are saying it's because of zika etc, but with points on offer in a sport where points are key, it's not as much incentive.
Assuming there are no further withdrawals, these should be the 16 seeds. Andy will be drawn to meet one of the 13-16th seeds in round 3.
1 Novak Djokovic
2 Andy Murray
3 Stan Wawrinka
4 Rafael Nadal
5 Kei Nishikori
6 Jo Wilfried Tsonga
7 Gael Monfils
8 David Ferrer
9 David Goffin
10 Maric Cilic
11 Roberto Bautista Agut
12 Pablo Cuevas

16 Gilles Simon

was watching the Tom Daley doc - the Olympics is his absolute priority - nothing else compares. At least with tennis we have four slams / year but I still think the gold medal is now up there with equal importance. It would be lovely to have Andy carry the flag - I'm sure he will be on the short list but who knows if he would agree to it. He is so professional. Chris Froome must be another contender I guess.

Sure Olympics doesn't have same significance for tennis players as some other sports, but I am sure Andy, Novak, Rafa, Stan are pretty focused on getting that gold for their countries. And Fed would be if he could. So as long as the very best are there who cares about the dropouts?

I'm sure they always do it, they have a holding camp away from the spotlight and move into village couple days before individual competitions
I think this is common with several of he better off countries, particularly for athletics which doesn't start straight away. It gives the athletes time to aclimatise and train away from the media frenzy and busyness of the Olympic village.
I'm still going for Mo Farah to be our flag bearer but I now also think Jo Pavey might get chosen, as not being biased, because she's from Exeter, but it'll be her fifth Olympics and Mark Foster was the our flag bearer last time and it was his fifth Olympics. I would like to see Andy do it, but I don't think he'll get enough votes.
Who decides/votes for who is to be flag bearer?

You'd think one ability a BBC sports reporter would have is to recognise "Britain's greatest living sportsman", apparently not in Tim Peach's case. As you say, Andy didn't arrive in Rio until about 4 hours after the photo was taken. Looking again at the picture, the spindly Gilles Simon type legs should have been a giveaway. ;)
Matthew Pinsent says the GB flag bearer won't be someone from athletics as they don't arrive in Rio until next week. His short list is Katherine Grainger, Kate Walsh(hockey), Bradley Wiggins, Andy Murray and William Fox-Pitt(eventing). He rules out Froome as he doesn't have an Olympic history as such. Members of the British Olympic Association make the decision, so the likes of Princess Anne I assume.

I can see why we want Andy to have the honour of carrying the flag - look how high and proud Chris Hoy held it in 2012 - but fame doesn't mean as much to Andy as success at tennis.
He has written several times that he regrets the lack of preparation, the long parade and opening ceremony etc that hampered his results in 2008. I don't believe he will let that happen again.

Most of the track & field athletes were in a training camp out of the UK before 2012 Olympics and did NOT attend the opening ceremony, as their events do not start in first week.
So perfectly normal practice.

Well disappointing though not end of the world for me, however only 5 of the top 10 and 14 of the top 30 men in Rio now which is certainly not ideal.
Why not just play the final now? ;)

BT Sport (http://sport.bt.com/more-sport-hub/more-sport/andy-murray-defends-field-at-olympics-after-several-high-profile-withdrawals-S11364077084847) - Andy Murray defends field at Olympics after several high-profile withdrawals
He had planned to stay in a hotel in Rio to avoid potential distractions but is now likely to move into the athletes' village in order to be closer to the venue.
"The whole atmosphere surrounding an Olympics is different because you're around loads of the best athletes in the world and you really want to perform well and do well for your country and your team-mates," said the world number two.
"I remember when I was in Beijing, although I didn't perform well there, it was just nice being surrounded by the best athletes from your country, seeing them coming back with medals, it feels a lot more like a team environment.
Speculation, but I wonder if this is paving the way for Andy being the GB flag bearer or at least attending the opening ceremony. The BBC are reporting that Wiggins has ruled himself out of carrying the flag and has asked that British Cycling nominate a female rider. Surely not lucky Lizzie.

"So @TeamGB flag shortlist may be thinning - Wiggins withdrew, Farah,J EH not here, Grainger & K RW competing next day. Murray or Adams? Or?"
Just hope if he does that he's ok for the competing. He's certainly a better player than 8 years ago in Beijing. I will be so proud if he does! :GBflag:
Remembering that the Daily Mail failed when they reported the entire Russian team were about to be kicked out of the Olympics when they weren't but the news about Andy is also in the Telegraph & Times. Telegraph decided to bring up Andy's support for Scottish independence and also the "uncertainty about Scotland’s future in the United Kingdom following the outcome of June’s European Union referendum" as if this is relevant but that's the kind of backlash he may expect.

Andy received the news with "humility and grace"........that is just soooooo him. I'm not in the slightest worried about this affecting his performance the next day. When he attended the ceremony in Beijing, it was his first Olympic experience, he was 8 years younger and didn't have the oodles of maturity and professionalism that he has since gained in buckets. He said himself at the time that he hadn't taken preparation seriously enough. That has never happened again! Very proud that he's to carry the flag.

The excuse is that they don't want us to miss any important moments while we would have to watch commercials. It remains to be seen how much of Team GB I will see as they won't focus as much on them as if I was in UK obviously. Seeing him in that picture, (and the other clips posted) surrounded by fellow sportspeople, am I the only one who really hopes he enjoys every moment of these Olympics, even if that clashes with the tennis a bit? He has sacrificed an awful lot for his sport, and picked himself up time after time after major knocks. He has a Gold Medal, and whilst another one would be nice, I hope he has a great time above all else.
He is so chuffed to be chosen isn't he.....

So soon after his injuries I doubt that if Delpo won in the first round he could make it all the way to the final. I am a big Delpo fan too. I was lucky enough to see him at Wimbledon this year and at the wells tour finals in the past. But what a want more is a great tournament and a fantastic competitive match for the gold. So I may be alone, but I hope that Djokovic makes it to the gold match. To be beaten by Andy of course :) hey I have a favourite

I like Nole well enough, and am really hoping for a Andy/Novak final - just love watching these two square up in an epic, and yeah, of course Andy for gold. I never hope for avoidances or soft options, Andy's big wins mean what they do because they came against the very top guys.
I couldn't agree more. Also for furthering interest in tennis it would be great it the number 1 and 2 fought it out for the gold and the two won it. Just another victory on his way to becoming number 1 :)
Andy in his press conference talking about Orlando Bloom. :shamed: ;) :big grin:

Someone had to bring up Scottish independence in it! How just how was that a relevant question!
Saturday's OOP (https://www.rio2016.com/en/tennis-schedule-and-results)
Kyle, Heather, Dom & Colin, Heather & Jo on the schedule but it looks as if only Heather's singles match is on a televised court.

Andy doing tricks for the BBC (https://twitter.com/RalphyHeraldSun/status/761293569923620865) nice hips !:fanning:
Kyle v Jordan Thompson second on Ct8 on Saturday starting at 3pm UK. Not a TV court.
It would seem all the flag carriers have not been scheduled to play on Saturday.
nice hips !:fanning:
I agree
Hes really good at it too !!!

Oh my , Andy looks so handsome there !!!!!
Since when did Synchronised Pillow Fighting become an Olympic sport ????????????????
:pirate:
LOL
Not sure if I was clear but? I guess I was trying to say FIGHT like hell and keep him on court, and at least wear him out.
If you can't win it.
Hmmm (pillow fighting):hmm::hmm::hmm:
Although what a ****** good sport that would be to watch.:swingin::pillows::pillows::swingin:
You want to have a go at wording the 1st draught of the letter to the Olympic
committee suggesting it ??
If thy don't run with it we could always suggest that all competitors are covered
in Golden syrup. But before we let that cat out the bag we should buy a load of shares
in Tate and Lyle eh?
Might help pay for these tickets that keep going up in price.;)
:cauldron:
Thanks for the reply:flowers:

I'll be staying up to watch the opening ceremony. Looking forward to watching Andy bringing in the flag, especially after trying to hide Princess Anne out of the photo shoot.

She was the one pulling the flag down and causing all the trouble. Bloody Royals.

GO DELPO!!
EDIT: But I agree, I do like to watch the best play the best.

I'm with you here Caro. Delpo/Rafa are my favourite players after Andy. Would love to see Delpo pull off the W and I am sure most of the crowd would be behind him.

 This is the Olympic games I can't believe that they have'nt got all the courts televised
If you saw Bardot's picture of the tennis site, you'd have seen that they just have a load of courts separated by fencing, not suitable for cameras at all.

Handsome in the piccy and pretty sexy with the hips...wow
The beeb haven't mentioned tennis in their coverage schedule. I hope they do show some. I haven't got broadband at home and want to watch Delpo/Nole match and well as all of our players.

Actually she was laughing with Andy and looked very laid back about it.

It's worth investing in a Radio Times. The Beeb most definitely do mention tennis in their schedule although much will be live on the red button channels which I guess we'll have to check day to day.
I regard Andy as Grandson No 4 and as with the other three, I hate to see people laughing at him (with him is ok) and that includes the Royals!

So chuffed for Andy was surprised he had accepted due to potential play next day but as he is not playing til Sunday it makes sense. It obviously means a lot to him.
Im working tonight but will be home in time to see the ceremony so excited!

I know she wasn't laughing at him - but when Andy originally put the flag in the right place she pulled it down and then stooped down - so she caused all the confusion. And all the faces she was making were at the daft photographer's instructions not Andy! But of course on video it looks like Andy she is sort of mocking.
****** journalists, ****** media and ****** Royals!

Looks like tennis will be on red button/BBC 4 channels so some will be covered.

What no camera at all, not even like the challengers? Seems crazy if that is true and not available on the net

What, why is it not possible to do it like the challengers where many don't even have seats and they put a fixed camera up, it's pretty small and easy to do
Do you know which courts are televised?
5 courts, centre and 1-4.
Another tennis player becomes flag bearer. Gilles Muller has been chosen to carry the flag for Luxembourg. Seems like a good guy so well deserved.

Believe it is on Red Button 6 but not sure if you need an extra package to receive this. Just had half price offer to get me back to Sky so I will be taking that up if it isn't!
just saw Andys 1st match is not Sat but Sun , yayyyyy for me !!!!!
Is there much buzz about the Olympics in the UK guys ? or do most not pay much attention ?
Personally for the first time in my life I have zero enthusiasm for them, wish Andy n Jamie well but otherwise don't really care
