Jack and Chris sooo awesome, what a nail biter. This is why I love the Olympics - never watch diving rest of the time.
Absolutely brilliant. How can I possibly get so excited by 2 guys I'd never heard of 2 hours ago?
Great diving from the guys it's a gold :)

Excellent. I had to have it on live pause. My nerves.......
Plus SALLY Conway's bronze in the Judo. I watched the semi, and thought she was done out of going into the final. Mind you I don't know anything about Judo - to me it looks like a girly cat fight. I have put girls in detention for less:-)

Given the costs involved in hosting the Olympics, surely setting up a permanent home - probably in Greece would be sensible. It's ridiculous the amount of money countries spend every 4 years.

i know i'm certainly enjoying this more than London safe in the knowledge that my taxes haven't been wasted on all the stadiums and venues.

London has made good use of the sites it had to build- and was lucky in that several already existed- which is really ideal for hosting games rather than having to build everything from scratch. Barcelona always springs to mind as a city that has made the most of being an Olympics host- it made me want to visit and actually had the chance in 1993 and have been a good few times since. First time I went we git to see the dancing fountains, one of the iconic images of the 1992 games. It's really taken off as a tourist destination and has the infrastructure to cope.
I'm half expecting Matt Baker to run up and trip one of Max Whitlock's competitors, his jingoism is out of control.

Letting a Premier League team play there virtually rent-free is hardly making good use as far as the vast majority of taxpayers are concerned. I really can't see what any of the country outside London gained from the huge expenditure.
GB through to the semis with a try in extra time.
Now switched to the gymnastics - can Whitlock get a medal?
Man that rugby was tense!
Max Whitlock guaranteed a medal, but what colour? Looking like bronze.

Unlike some other Olympic hosts all londons sites get used which is far better than them being built then left to rot. I'm sure the anniversary games and next year's world athletics championships bring in a pretty penny.

I quite like when our commentators get carried away supporting team GB, after all that's who they are broadcasting to, am sure the Japanese commentators were equally excited.

There's being supportive, thrilled and excited and then there's Matt Baker who takes it to another level. Mitch Fenner is so sadly missed from gymnastic commentary.

there are some brutal sports and accidents. I have been watching the cycling and some scary times.
Rowing has started.
Another theory for the pool is that it is ink. http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/olympics/news/rio-2016-green-olympic-diving-pool-may-be-caused-by-ink-say-team-gb-gold-winners-jack-laugher-and-a7184611.html
A few more theories in here and the waterpolo pool is turning green - http://edition.cnn.com/2016/08/10/sport/rio-olympics-second-green-pool-trnd/

Clive Woodward was very excited when we beat Argentina in rugby sevens last night I enjoy their enthusiasm. Look at Leon in the diving always gets carried away!
I thought the theory regarding the pools was that a lack of chlorine and exess heat had allowed algae to grow and multiply. Has the skulls been on yet?

Tremendous result for Grainger and Thornley who hopefully gets better coverage than Dan Goodfellow.
5 Olympics gold medals but it's taken working with John Inverdale to break Steve Redgrave. He rolled his eyes, gave one last look of utter contempt and walked off as Inverdale wittered away and hasn't been seen since.

Chinese media reported earlier this year that Previous world record holder Wang Junxia signed a letter in 1995 claiming she was forced to take “large doses of illegal drugs over the years”. Legitimacy still to be proven though.

No Olympic spirit at the Women's football. It went to penalties and if Sweden scored they were through but the American keeper Hope Solo (who's a piece of work anyway) decided to call for a new pair of gloves just as the Swedish player was about to take the penalty. Very pleased for Canada and well done to your lass, wining a second Gold in the same event is awesome. Our girl summed up what the Olympics is about to me. She was really happy to get into the final, knew after her routine, that she had done her absolute best and was content. I don't think it had entered her head that she might get a medal. Certainly was disappointing shot put from Jess and Katarina poor (even if weaker event),glad Ennis Hill back in lead but the margin is only 72 pts with KJT only 100 adrift so could still be tight. Katarina needs to have the right attitude though to do well, would prefer Jess to win 2nd Olympic title though. Wasn't going well for Greg but sure he can step up, great that Jazz Carlin got another silver though Ledecki 12 seconds ahead in 800m freestyle,Phelps could only finish joint 2nd(3 way tie) in 100m Butterfly with Singapore's Joseph Schooling taking Gold.

After the Long jump Belgian Thiam is narrowly ahead on 5018 with Jessica Ennis Hill on 5013 , KJT in 3rd with 4967. The Javelin and 800 metres to come in the evening session, both Thiam and Ennis Hill are strong in the Javelin, whilst Jess and Katherine have the best times in the 800,Thiam far weaker.
C'mon Jess, c'mon KJT!!!!:GBflag:

Superb ride by Callum Skinner in the other semi to make final  - come on Jason - make it all GB final.
At least Beeb are consistent, Laura Trott getting majority of the credit same as Brad did last night. Great performance from the team though. And Becky.
Does anyone know what has happened as far as the individual medals are concerned in the gymnastics I watched the team competition and the all-round individual but I haven't seen anything else listed since.

It was men's trampolining tonight. There are some individuals from Sunday to Tuesday. Here is the Rio schedule - https://www.rio2016.com/en/artistic-gymnastics-schedule-and-results
When you hear Inverdale interview the British rowers you might get the impression it's a toff's sport, you'd be wrong. ;) These two brothers are brilliant. :big grin:

So pleased for them all.
Im sure papers will say only a bronze and only a silver however Greg has dominated long jump for a while and normally jumps a long jump in first round then the others have to try and catch up. This one was a real contest and exhilarating to watch which is exciting and he still walks away with a medal.
Ennis is double world and olympic champion and 30 years old. Someone was bound to beat her one day. And last night was that day she still walked away with silver and thats off the back of injury and having a baby. KJT needs to improve her throwing but still has time to medal and probably will in 2020.
Best swimming meet ever in history apparently and got a lot of young blood in that team.
30 medals so far for TeamGB how many more can we get?!
@Traveller - The target set was 48 I think. We have got two more coming from the cycling - a gold and silver, A Silver from sailing is guaranteed, Mr M will get at least a silver, so we only need 14 more to hit the target.

Very, very best of luck to Mark Cavendish just starting the Omnium final. Would absolutely love him to finally get his Olympic gold. C'mon Mark :GBflag:
Cav should be DQ'ed for causing that crash.
Surely there will be some penalty for that.
Silverdee
16-08-2016, 08:24
Cav should be DQ'ed for causing that crash.
It did look very bad and all Cavs fault. Sports page this morning quotes that "he is not that kind of rider". I noted the apology to race winner during the race when he put his hand out to him but no consolation to guy in hospital! Was surprised there was no penalty but no one had protested apparently.
There's going to be an Olympic parade for all the medallists in London on 16th October.
A Dutch journalist tweeted his conversation with Cavendish after the race.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Cp7yDpuXYAERa7Z.jpg
I don't sense any contrition. ;)
I'm uncomfortable with that information, having seen Cav's action which looked like a deliberate move. My only thought in his favour is that in road racing if one cyclist causes others to crash, whether deliberate or not, no disqualification seems to result and Cav will have that mind set now having done so much cycling on the tour. However we'd all be pretty mad if a GB guy lost out in those circs.
Another shocking result in the boxing involving a Russian fighter. Michael Conlan was clearly the winner but all three judges gave it to the Russian. Conlan was furious when interviewed by Inverdale who was clearly worried what he would say and cut him off. RTE however let him have his say. (https://twitter.com/paddypower/status/765564234046537728) Strong language but who could blame him.

In the women's swimming marathon yesterday the silver medallist was disqualified when she wrestled with another competitor who came third at the finish board. What's up wih these swimmers?

No, I've read that GB's increased success is because gymnastics, cycling and other disciplines have moved off the 4 yr plan and implemented 8 year planning - e.g. Max Whitlock has been in the training programme for nearly a decade. Longer term planning paying off.
