I suspect that there will be rule changes and a camera on the line for the the next Olympics. I was a nervous wreck, it was almost like watching Andy play!

Felt sorry for Jake Burnell in the swimming marathon today. Somebody grabbed his legs near the end when he was in silver medal position and he got disqualified. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/36689788

The 10k swimming seems a joke. Our guy got disqualified. His first yellow card for obstruction/ impedement came when no one was around him, and his second when someone was holding onto his leg! There were about 60 boats around, you'd think that there would be a camera doing something useful in amongst them to ensure fair play. Four years of someone's life down the drain for no good reason.

Teresa

Team GB were set a target of 48 medals, they have now got 50, with another Gold in the bag in the sailing, and at least two more guaranteed medals to come in boxing. Plus events like the triathlon haven't started yet.

Helen40
16-08-2016, 22:52
Another shocking result in the boxing involving a Russian fighter. Michael Conlan was clearly the winner but all three judges gave it to the Russian. Conlan was furious when interviewed by Inverdale who was clearly worried what he would say and cut him off. RTE however let him have his say. (https://twitter.com/paddypower/status/765564234046537728) Strong language but who could blame him.

Anyone else speculating on the Russians trying to 'help' their athletes in other ways now they've been caught out on the state drugs program? I was gutted for both the Russian's opponents. Add that to the farce with Jake Burnell in the swimming marathon today and I must admit my mind left pure sport while I was watching the rest of the day to go to how you could cheat, rig scores and/or buy judges. :(

Nice job Andy! Seriously John? If you're not British the medals don't count?

The decision yesterday in favour of the Russian was an even bigger injustice than the Conlan result and the irony is that one of the judges was Irish. The firm belief is that there is only one reason that all 3 judges could possibly have reached that decision. It's too late for the defeated boxers but will anything be done about it?

I always thought it was a brutal sport at school - a place for girls to settle their differences, quite legitimately, in the most spiteful of ways! Who could forget the frozen fingers and bashed shins? Well done Team GB - go girls!

I went to bed when it was 2-0 so also was delighted to see the final score. Too right, Alis! We had to play on red blaize which was lethal in falls and no shin or mouth guards for us. I still remember the pain of a broken tooth when I took an aerial shot in the mouth.

JAMES4578
19-08-2016, 02:14
Well done Jade in retaining Olympic title!:gold: As expected Usain Bolt easily defended 200 metres title for sprint triple (been dominant and charismatic champion) and reiterates that this will be last Olympics (unless somehow changes mind) but will do 100m at next year's World Championships in London. Pity Adam Gemili just missed out on the Bronze (by 3/1000th of a second!),however can still be proud of himself!

Rosalind
19-08-2016, 07:21
Adam Gemili misses out on bronze by zillioneths of second but what company he is keeping! That's no shame. Feel for him though due to his huge disappointment. Years of training and it's down to 20 seconds and a time difference which needs a state-of-the-art computer. He should be very proud.

Hopefully some more golds to come and certainly medals. Am I the only one who not only keeps hoping we win but that China don't so that they don't catch up?! #anyonebutChina :gold::OGwave:

This was probably my second favourite moment of the Olympics. A really entertaining (and nerve-racking) contrast in styles - GB's defensive counterattacking versus Holland's slick attacking play, constantly rushing forwards with the ball seemingly stuck to their sticks at times.

After watching them get a hard fought bronze in London 2012 it was so good to see them get a hard fought gold this time. Shows what can happen when you don't let your head drop and keep fighting till the end.

There has been some very dubious judging. Forgive me for being cynical but the team to be promoted in the wake of GB's disqualification in the 400m relay is Brazil. I wonder if GB would have been disqualified if it hadn't been the Brazilian team to benefit.

Oh dear, whatever happened to Tom Daley? He was way out in front in qualifying yesterday, yet finished a lowly 18th out of 18 in the semi-finals this afternoon and doesn't qualify for the final. Easily one of the favourites for the medals, he will be devastated. Too much pressure maybe or just an off day?

So gutting for Tom, not quite sure what happened today-unfortunately he peaked too soon but he really deserved to be in final. Got to produce each time though, not a lot of time between semi and final too-whilst on same day was bigger gap in London. prelims and indeed semis are not always conclusive mind you ,such a pity. However at least Tom leaves with medal, but was not the most successful diver.

His presser was gut wrenching. He was only just holding it together but gave a longish interview and vowed to work harder for Tokyo.
He said he'd felt good, and didn't know what had happened today when he'd broken the Olympic record yesterday. Just that his mind and body hadn't come together.

Couldn't agree more, Alis. He's been in the spotlight and tipped as a big gold hope since he was 14, plus he lost his dad, who was his absolute rock tragically early. It's too much. I watched the prelims, and now had a chance to watch what happened today - the difference in Tom's face and body language was drastic, the poor guy was wracked with nerves and shaking. Some sports are just bizarre.. losing in the last second or not getting your mind and body together and plunging (no pun intended) to 18th from 1st. Two devastated athletes. Makes me appreciate the tennis scoring system even more.

On an unrelated point: watched Nicola Adams today - our smiliest athlete - I never watch boxing apart from our Olympic hopes. This gentlemen disagreed with you:-

Pierre de Coubertin (Founder of the Modern Olympics)

The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.

The Golds have been great, but some of my favourite moments of these Olympics have been the unexpected medals, where an athlete has performed way beyond expectation to snaffle a medal. They have all had a motivation to go that extra step to add to The Team GB medal haul, that might not have been there if they knew only the Gold's counted.

If it's the taking part why award any type of medal ?
I agree however you can enjoy someone personal triumph just as much or even more without them winning silverware but that's not the discussion it's about judging overall success and that gotta come down to winners

Alis

.............. but the athletes who win silver and bronze are still winners. They aren't handed the medals randomly, they have to win them by coming second or third. To come first in the world in an event is amazing but to come second or third is still pretty special. As far as the medal table is concerned, how would they separate countries with the same number of golds if they didn't count silver and bronze?

Had forgotten about Lasse Viren. I remember watching his amazing medal wins but then his reputation was tainted by rumours that he blood doped, a common but not illegal practice in Finland at that time and the precursor to EPO. Just checked that the use of EPO was not banned until 1986.

It's the Beeb.. Not exactly fair coverage or hype about each sport. I really didn't understand why they hyped Bolt so much. Sure acknowledge him, but I don't really think he's done that much more than others. In athletics it's easier to get multiple cross discipline medals than in tennis.

Rafa made a good point about the tight tennis scheduling. If you really want things like tennis to have good competition, don't make the physicality of having to play potentially three matches in a day a possibility. I know that if you stretched the tennis comp over two weeks then you might lose players, but that would be their choice.

Honestly. Whether they're doing it to wind us and the rest of the world up, so to promote the EU, it's still sad.

IF we were to enter as an EU state we wouldn't have so many medals as we wouldn't have as many athletes taking part. e.g that ex British guy going over to another country just so he could compete in the Tae Kwon Do because each nation is only allowed one entrant.

Teresa
21-08-2016, 12:19
If The EU had their way, the allocated lottery funding would have to be allocated by a committee, favouring the poorer countries. The committee to decide the allocation, would all need a cut for expenses, special flags and expensive meals - leaving nothing for the athletes. Any country with a medal winner would be forced to make a bigger contribution - yes I can see that working - not.

Our system is brutal, whereby the amount of lottery funding you get is directly related to the number of medals. It's payment by results, but works.

Team GB's last medal is a silver, as Joyce loses on points.

The final total is 27 gold, 23 silver and 17 bronze.

Well done Callum Hawkins for coming 9th in the marathon. He is only 24 years so more to come from him.

Think a few had misgivings about these games but they been successful and not just talking about the GB medal tally, though certainly ecstatic about that-2 fewer gold but more medals overall! of course a few issues and in terms of atmosphere would have to say London was better, however Rio still put on a very good show!:clap::clap::cheer::cheer: A bit sad nearly over now.

That really was a fantastic result. A top ten place in his first major marathon is amazing.

I stayed up to watch the closing ceremony. I thought the faces of the people, pretending to be made out of clay, were a bit weird looking.

Mo Farah will be giving up the track after next year's world championships in London. Luckily, I ordered tickets for the men's 10,000m and 5,000m (amongst other tickets) quite a few weeks ago. I hope he can win both of them next year.

I don't quite understand why he's giving up track but carrying on on the road.

Probably cos his age will be against him for the track. Athletes often change to marathon from 5000 and 10000 when they get older.
