A truly idiot question, but one that has puzzled me. How does the ball bounce/toss effect things? Bear in mind that I have never played any sport. I couldn't even manage P.E. As a kid. It's a constant bafflement to me why I have got so into watching it. I
I was never one for bouncing the ball but think that gives you time to think and also be balanced. The toss is a huge part of the serve plus where you hit it i.e. as it comes down, or at the top of its flight. There are, of course "ideals" but in reality, as with most things, it partly depends on the individual but loosely speaking, if you toss the ball too low or hit it on its way down, you risk hitting it into the net, if you toss it too high then you may not throw it up consistently and that makes it difficult to hit consistently. The permutations are many but hopefully that gives you a flavour. I was a leftie when I played and that affects the spin on the ball too - the opposite to a right hander, which fools the oppo if they're not used to playing a leftie.
