Aljaz' thread hasn't been recovered, so I thought I would start him a new one.
It must be very difficult for him at the moment, sure he would have loved to have been in Rio with the team.
Continued best wishes to Aljaz. I wouldn't blame him one bit if gives up, but I hope that one day we can welcome him officially into team GB.

I know the DC rules don't allow him to play for GB. what are the rules about the Olympics.
He has to have played D.C. to be eligible for the Olympics, which seems incredibly harsh in his case.
He sent a lovely tweet to the team which made me feel doubly sorry for him.

Is he persevering with his appeal or has he given up?
There's a lot of sympathy for Bedene here, but does it also follow that you think that the ITF should never have changed the rules in the first place?

I actually agree with the ITF rule change. What I strongly disagree with is moving the goal posts on Aljaz mid application and leaving him in no man's land.
Agreed Rosiebear I do agree with the rule change but I think it's tough it was during his application and that it is based on dead rubbers alone
Yes - with most changes, including laws, if folk are adversely affected mid "transaction", then there are usually transition arrangements and this seems to have been a strong case for just that.
I wonder if Leon and the rest of the DC team could help him either financially or with legal help to continue his appeal?
It seems such a shame that, having chosen to be British, Aljaz now finds himself in the wilderness, which is clearly affecting his game. Yes I too think there must be a way of the tennis community getting behind him to help his cause. I wonder if he might have thought twice, had he realised the hassle ahead of him.

I'm sure the LTA are involved in helping him.
I'm sure the LTA are involved in helping him.
We'll, I didn't mention that as you never know with the LTA, but I do hope so.
The LTA funded his appeal and provided a lawyer, but now Bedene is wondering whether it's worth spending more LTA money to go further.
It could cost £100,000.

he should carry on fighting, and ask the LTA to fund the entire amount, as I think he will regret it later if he doesn't. I imagine he would not have long left to appeal again.

Well done Aljaz! I hope he has a decent run in Banja Luca. I see he plays Novak next - but its Dennis from Austria not Djoko! ;)
The Bedene Bros. won their first round match 6-2 6-4 and Aljaz won his second round match 6-4 6-2.
Great stuff - really pleased for Aljaz.
I'm pleased for Aljaz too, particularly in light of the fact that Dan and Kyle are ranked so much higher than him now, so that leaves him nowhere with regards to Davis Cup, but I do hope he successfully appeals as he could be useful in DC a few years down the line.
When is the decision due on his appeal? Or has he not started it yet?

Disappointing by Aljaz. Back to the drawing board.
Russell Fuller had him in the second round. I think Mr Fuller would need to think long and hard for next time.
Estrella Burgos is 36 and hadn't won a tour match since last July. A poor performance from Bedene especially after the bagel third set and being a break up in the fourth.

So sorry for Aljaz. He said he nearly quit tennis completely last year after the DC ruling. I'm glad he didn't - it's despicable that the goalposts were moved on him mid-application, and he's been left in the wilderness re DC, but I hope he can take pleasure again in the rest of his career. Good luck to Aljaz, will always wish him well.
I feel desperately sorry for him. He seems to have lost his way a bit. I hope he can find his mojo again. Is there still an ongoing appeal or has he given up his hopes of DC?

I find it slightly odd that someone could be so affected by something which would really only impact about 5% of his tennis schedule. I do hope he sorts himself out and finds the top 50 form again though.

Maybe it is, but for the vast majority of the year, tennis is an individual sport where Nationality has no meaning.
Maybe it is, but for the vast majority of the year, tennis is an individual sport where Nationality has no meaning.
I see your point but for someone of split nationality or who has a choice
I would've thought that after they've pledged their allegiance to a country
it must be hard to be excluded from a part of it. Due to such a small point.
(Dead rubber) Feeling part of something bigger is important to us all.
Also if it hadn't had been important to him he would have never appealed.
The words of my late father come to mind:
" Son we're not that good at living together, but we make even crapper hermits"
Being part of the DC team has been a huge boost for all the British players, including Andy. James, Dan, Kyle and Dom have all said how much it has meant to them to be regularly around Andy, Jamie, Leon and all the back up team. I'm sure that being part of all that would have been really good for Aljaz too. Tennis is a very lonely sport so to feel part of such a supportive team must pay huge dividends. Poor Aljaz is now officially British but he must feel that he will never really be part of the British tennis community. He seems to be a genuinely nice lad and I feel very sorry for him.

Call me cynical but I wonder how much desire there is at the LTA to get involved in an expensive appeal process on behalf of Aljaz now that he's outside the top 100. More than likely that is in Aljaz's mind which brings extra pressure.
I wonder what Aljaz will do next.

ITF say no reason in future why a further application should not be made. Bad blood with Slovenian Federation not helping.
So on we go ....
A link (https://www.sportresolutions.co.uk/uploads/related-documents/02_03_2017_Bedene_LTA_ITF_-_Award.pdf) to the complete judgement (all 19 pages). The last paragraph does give him some hope although it will require some "fence mending" with the Slovenian Tennis Association.

I agree Jagmad. It would be nice for the team to include Aljaz in some way - even as just a hitting partner. At least he would feel that he was part of it and accepted as a Brit.

Also after the way he has been blocked I can't see him ever going back. I know I wouldn't.
Aljaz was part of the GB squad for the tie against Japan last year. He tweeted at the time.

Aljaz(14) has been drawn against Gaio in the Miami qualifiers, he is then drawn to face Herbert(2) or Kamke
Well done Bedene :) let the roll continue :)

Thanks for that didn't here that at the time. Although...
As my loving late mother used to say "one swallow does not a summer make"?
I'm sure Leon is supporting Aljaz and bringing him in when he can
His first qualifying match for Miami is this afternoon (Miami time). It seems abit of a tough ask for him really, only 24 hours or so between matches when Irving and Miami are 1.5k miles apart -further than Glasgow to Rome.
I hope he's got the energy left in him to have a good run in Miami, let alone get used to the courts in time.
Aljaz takes the first set 6-4

Yes, a good opportunity, would expect Aljaz to beat Kamke ranked 60 places lower, but was a surprise Kamke beat Herbert, so he may be playing well as well.
Aljaz is up an early break 3-0*

Aljaz has drawn Struff and plays about 6pm today
Bedene on serve against struff 3-2
Aljaz a set and a break down - c'mon lad!
Aljaz now a set and two breaks down against Struff.
Had treatment but the poor guy still really looks like he is suffering.
Retires at 0-4 in the second.
Poor Aljaz.
Looks like a retirement poor Bedene. Feel better soon
Aljaz's 8th match in 9 days (7th in 7 days) take its toll. Up to Kyle to stop the rot otherwise it's Indian Wells all over again, one Brit out, all out.
Certainly seemed to be paying for so much tennis played lately. I wonder what his next tournie is
So sad that Aljaz had to retire.
