Andy vs Del Potty :gold: :silver: match
erm nope, it's Andy v Fran.
:pirate:
(because in some far flung city after Andy had won and was making the winners speech he went and called Juan - Fran. No-one really knows why but there was clearly some WUM'ing going on!)
So, it's Fran. Over 5 sets ...

Ladies doubles 16.00
Mixed doubles not before 18.00
It's over before it started it would seem. ;)
I imagine it depends on how fatigued he is, how his wrist is - he might not risk it, if it might impede DC and The US Open. Don't forget it is over 5 sets, and there are no points for this. I think he will be doing a serious cost-benefit analysis.
I don't doubt he will play, but not sure how far he will push it?

Good luck Andy you can do it!
Why do people think Delpo theres a chance he wont play just by that twitter remark?! He had just come off court after a gruelling match of course he is going to think he is the under dog but its the Olympic final you dont withdraw from that!
I hope one of the BBC channels will show it. I'm going for an Andy win (hopefully in straight sets).

Agreed T7 - all DelPo said was he's not sure whether he'll be able to win gold, and if he doesn't he's still very happy with the silver. Given that he's (i) coming back from injury, and (ii) upgraded his previous bronze, which he was already delighted with, it's pretty much what I would expect him to say. I'm sure he'll give the final his very best shot, but if it's not enough he's still happy - he's a good guy, think that's how he genuinely feels, not mind games.

I don't mind how it goes as long as it is a good match. Delpo would be a deserving gold medalist. Plus I will always be thankful to him for tiring both Federer out at London 2012 and Djokovic at Wimby 2013!

Andy needs to focus on Delpos' backhand, he is still having problems that side. He keeps running round it leaving the deuce court wide open. Was getting a bit better towards the end of the Rafa match but not as strong a shot yet.
I've just remembered. I read, yesterday, Andy's in the same league as Mo Farah. No British athlete had won three Olympic gold medals in a row, until early this morning, and no male tennis player has ever defended his Olympic title and gold medal.
Very best of luck Andy.
Hope the tennis gods will look kindly on our boy today.

Delpo must be pretty tired. Only just back on the circuit, not in the run of playing longer matches, 2 tense duels in 3 sets and final set breakers against Gael and Rafa....and the exhilaration of being in the mix again he must feel shattered both physically and emotionally.
Its gonna be close but GO ANDY GO GO is the start of GOLD GOLD
If the weather hadn't played havoc with the tennis schedule, then the semifinals would have been played on a Friday with a day off before the gold medal match.

Although players have to adapt to clay, grass, hard courts, indoors and outdoors, the conditions at this Olympic tournament really seem to have influenced how the points play.
I think this court favours del Potro's forehand.
He has beaten Nole, Rafa and Monfils - a lot of hard work.
It would make sense for Andy to adopt a long match strategy and grind the remaining energy out of Juan, though without opening himself up to to the risk of a straight sets defeat.
I felt Andy was much better against Ken - he does have a tendency to play better against the best. Hopefully the conditions will be in Andy's favour and he plays at his true level.
C'mon Andy!
It has certainly been a strange mixture of balls/surface. I can't say I've understood it as they've just come off grass and are going onto 'normal' hard. Abit tough on their bodies to say the least.
I am confident that if Andy has his game head on today and comes out firing that he will win. The question is will he?

Well you're more sporting than me, because my appreciation of DelPo's great attitude definitely doesn't extend to not minding who wins! I can't say just how much I want this for Andy - it would be so, so special to be the only player ever win 2 singles golds.......
...which is why I am disappointed that I can't watch ..Not many things come before an Andy match, but my lovely brother's b'day is one :)

Delpo did not play Gael - he was beaten in three sets by Nisikori
Everyone seems to agree the courts are very slow but not oor Andy. This is what he said after the Johnson match.
“We didn’t get to hit balls before the match because of the rain,” said Murray. “He just started slow and came back into it, played very much better. These are quicker courts so I expected a tough one."
The slow centre court has certainly benefited Del Potro and Nadal giving both time to run round and hit their forehands. Andy hits a flatter ball than Nadal so hopefully that will give him an advantage when he relentlessly attacks Delpo's backhand.
I've just remembered. I read, yesterday, Andy's in the same league as Mo Farah. No British athlete had won three Olympic gold medals in a row, until early this morning, and no male tennis player has ever defended his Olympic title and gold medal.

It's also really important for the Davis Cup that Andy wins. If Delpo goes into the tie having just beaten Andy on a hard court, it will give him huge amounts of confidence - we could do without that.

Everyone seems to agree the courts are very slow but not oor Andy.
Andy often seems to have a different perspective on speed of courts than other players; from various reports I gather that the courts are slow but the balls are fast!
If the weather hadn't played havoc with the tennis schedule, then the semifinals would have been played on a Friday with a day off before the gold medal match.
And if that happened I wouldn't have missed both the semis which I was gutted to have to do! Dratted weather :grrr:

Alright. I will admit it, I'll be gutted if he only gets silver, I think I was just trying to put a positive spin on it should the worst happen. To be the first male tennis player to successfully win back to back golds would be the sort of fear that he deserves. His own badge of honour that none of the other big four had or ever will have, or any great for that matter. I want this more than the French Open for him.

Andy's match follows the mixed doubles and will be on red button and possibly BBC4. Possibly snippets on BBC1 between other sports, but BBC1 is covering the track cycling and others.

Mixed dubs is currently on BBC4.
I'm glad mixers are still on centre...it means the court will be in shade so that annoying shadow will be gone and won't distract. Andy was annoyed because he wasn't seeing the ball in one of his earlier matches because of the shadow. MTB....won't be long now.

"Clawed it back" has been Simon Reeds saying of the week. :grrr: Bring back Bouncy & Lloydy.
Ridiculous comment! He was never behind, so clawed it back from what precisely? :grrr:
:phew: that was hard work. Important for a psychological advantage too because now Potty knows he has to go 4 sets to win. Also Andy serving first again.
