Thread to discuss all aspects of the Davis Cup involving other countries.
Croatia have announced the same team, which beat the USA, for their tie against France.
Milos raonic has announced that due to continuing recovery he will not be playing with Canada in their Davis cup tie
It must be a conundrum for the French Davis cup captain that his team have done so well in New York. As a result of their success, Pouille and Tsonga are either exhausted or injured, Monfils is still in the competition and Herbert and Mahut have just lost in the semis. It's ironic that doing so well here could cause them to struggle next weekend.
As Andy said in his presser, all the top players are struggling by this time in the calendar. At least the French have a deeper pool than most and the situation emphasises how much Andy has given to our DC effort when he has played so often (and in most cases 3 matches) immediately after going deep in GS tourneys.

The crowd will carry him through, he gets such an adrenaline rush from the support and team situation. Will probably crash after but has a small gap before the Asian swing.

Well Gasquet will have had a nice rest thanks to Kyle.
That's horrible news for Jo. I had hoped his withdrawal would keep him fit enough to play, mainly because I like him. Obviously for our own chances I am hoping Croatia wins their tie. I wonder how gasguet is feeling.

Not the only early exit made by gasquet and his ranking is heading south rapidly, so making this tie so very interesting. Really sorry for jo of course but cheering for Croatia. ..I wonder why?
I had another weird dream, last night. We were playing Croatia in the Davis Cup and, for strange reason, my ticket was for outside the stadium. The stadium was a mixture of Eastbourne's and the Queen's Club, but the court was hard and not grass. If I stood on something, I could see into the stadium but missed the Edmund vs Coric match. The stadium then became blocked, so I couldn't see into it and I was so desperately wanting to see the (Andy) Murray vs Cilic match that I walked along a road called South Street. In front of me was a door and, when I opened it, there was like the world's biggest mattress in a some sort of room. Other people were sitting on it and in front was a very big TV. The weirdest thing was, I had a cat with me and it then disappeared after I entered the room or whatever it was supposed to be. I sat next to a woman, who told me I would have to move as soon as Matilda arrived. Very weird and strange, as that's where it ended.

I don't eat cheese, late at night, and hopefully it might mean we're going to play Croatia in the final.
Hopefully that's what it means stell. I'm wondering how fit monfils can be after his USO. I'll be cheering Croatia for this one. Might be the only time I've cheered cilic lol

That's probably a good decision. For some strange reason, Gasquet has a dreadful DC record and Pouille should be oozing confidence after the USO.

So it's Croatia at home to Argentina, well they've won away in Poland Italy and gb. It's tough to win 4 away ties but I wouldn't bet against them doing it.
Revamp ahoy! Not sure I approve of many of the proposals.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/37427007
I absolutely hate idea of cities bidding to stage finals. it might take away the chance of a home final. I would wonder why cities would bid to hold finals for other countries. Sounds like a possibility of a lot of empty seats. Also if the world tour finals stayed in London past 2017 then it's unlikely London would win the bid to host the finals. Agh boo! These proposals are all rubbish. I'm not too fond of best of three sets either, something that important should not be left to the possibility of being over in 2 sets. It takes away the excitement, lessens the chances of thrilling matches. All so the tie can be shortened to two days? Surely in a case such as ours, where a singles player often plays doubles, this will make it more difficult. These all seem like bad ideas that personally for me will take away a lot of what makes Davis cup so special. I would have been more in support of the competition running every two years to make it easier for players to fit it in and to keep the days and sets as they. I'm not against change, but I do think in this case all the proposals are pants.
Interesting ................... neutral venue for the final is probably fairer than the status quo. I'm not sure about the best of three sets format but I suppose it might encourage more of the top players to play. I think I would rather it stayed as the best of five but was held every second year like the Ryder Cup.
Also it says that bidding process will begin this December with a winning city announced in summer 2017. I wonder if the decision will apply to that year's final, or will come in 2018 to give them more time to set it up. The later the better!

I don't like change either but when change is ok I can come around to it.
Here, I'm agreeing with JerryD on these changes.
Bidding? It's not the Olympics where only big rich cities need apply because they need a massive infrastructure !!! What are they thinking! Hate three set matches! They're over before they've begun! Lots of exclamation marks I know but arhhh!!!!

Overall not liking the proposals. While we all know that the 10% ticket allocation for away fans is rubbish in today's world of easy travel, to hold the final in a neutral venue will ruin the atmosphere. The pride and engagement of the fans is what makes DC so fantastic. You only had to be in Glasgow this weekend to know that. A neutral venue will mean a far more neutral crowd. After experiencing Ghent last year even as the away team it would not have been the same in a neutral venue.
The other proposals (3 sets , 2 days ) are presumably designed to attract more of the top players to play DC. I can understand they want to do that but think these ideas will spoil DC. Best of 5 is far more demanding and makes it more exciting (though Andy would have beat Delpo if we had had best of 3 last week) and two days - how will that work ? I'm like to think I'm ok with change but these proposals will ruin DC
So let me see if I have got this right?
Lets say GB V France Final for instance, (or any other 2 European countries)
And Japan or Rio or some other far flung country wins the bid.
1. If we know that before hand, and our 1/4 and semi's are both away and we know the final is deffo
gonna be away it could reduce the numbers due to costs. (travel etc.)
2. we have alternating home/away matches atm what happens to that we just ignore the Final.
I think that's one of the best parts of the structure imo. the more you win the more chance of a home tie.
And it's not fair to steal a country's Final
3. It's only gonna push the price of tickets up.
Hey but that's the price of progress I guess.

I would go for every 2 years (so it doesn't fall in an Olympic year), re-instate ranking points and make it a compulsory event like the GSs and Masters, but have less compulsory 500's 250's in a DC year. That way the top players would have to play! .... runs for cover! :getcoat: Haha

yes - every two years is ok and changing the ridiculous 10% for away fans. Ranking points and altering compulsory rules good too. Good suggestions by us - stupid suggestions by the powers that be. :grrr:
It's also ridiculous to start bidding before we know who's in it! In a similar scenario to this year, we could bid for Glasgow, fabulous for us, and it ends up (unfortunately) being Argentine and Croatians having to travel somewhere for them of no relevance whatsoever.
So let me see if I have got this right?

I don't think that it's true that the more you win, the more chance you have of a home tie. I'm pretty sure it depends on which country the opposing teams last played in and if they haven't played before it is drawn by lot. By the present rules, we could end up having a whole season of home ties or a whole season of away ties - probably unlikely but certainly not impossible. I'm ambivalent about a neutral venue for the final - I can certainly see the arguments against but, at the moment, the home team has an enormously unfair advantage in not only choosing the venue but the surface too. Add to that the ridiculous 10% rule for the visiting team and the cards really are stacked against the visitors.

Revamp of Davis Cup possibly best of 3 sets and over 2 days Welcomed by Andy... but not bidding for neutral finals like the ATP ones
World number two Andy Murray says he is "not sold" on plans to let cities bid to stage the Davis and Fed Cup finals.
A revamp of the team tennis events has been put forward by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
Britain's Murray welcomed ITF proposals to shorten Davis Cup matches from best-of-five sets to best-of-three and stage finals over two days instead of three.
But he added: "The home and away aspect of the Davis Cup is something I enjoy and makes it different and special."

I do agree that the 10% needs changing. Maybe not 50/50 but at least a 70/30. For the players ease I think it would be better if possible, it if was played on the surface that coincided with that season. To save players going from hard to clay like last year. However as some times fall between seasons it would be difficult to decide which surface was appropriate. It's a tough one. Perhaps the surface could be decided by lot, not automatically the home teams choice. I do wonder what the implications are for the final surface with it being a neutral venue.
Are people really going to watch a tie in which neither team is the home team? Say for example Shanghai wins the final, and it's GB v France. Who is travelling to Shanghai to watch it? Would anyone living in Shanghai interested in seeing it? I just don't see how it could work. Though I could be wrong. I wonder what the players think of this change.
Ahh sorry Roy, I disnt see you post before I added mine. I guess we DO know how Murray feels then lol

I certainly wouldn't want the job who ever's in the final.
Lets face it you wouldn't be able to please everyone.
Also if you fixed the venue/surface it would still favour
some and not others.
Nope as Andy has already said that bit is best left alone.
It's easy to change the sets/days/ticket quotas so do it.

Mother and son have different positions! Hmmm..

Yes I know if we were to meet Japan in the final it would be an away tie this time but it will be neutralised by the
last one earlier this year and by the next one.
Also a bigger venue is not always better. Especially if it has empty seats.
And only half the fans could make it, for whatever reason.

They say they want to get more people interested in tennis which is great however to me this is not gong to make anyone more interested. Maybe a neutral venue could have been in our 2015 instance France or Holland so that everyone has to travel - a bit. I get that and an alteration to 50:50 seat allocations. But our all-European final held on another continent - ridiculous!

The argument about a neutral venue doesn't really hold up, as the country that wins the bid could end up in the final.
And tennis players are used to playing on different surfaces so it's not a massive advantage for the home team to pick the surface, it didn't do Belgium much good to play on GB's least favourite surface, nor did it help us at the weekend.
Players are used to playing in front of a partisan crowd, whenever they play a Brit at Wimbledon, etc etc, or Djokovic plays Federer anywhere.
I see it as an attempt to turn DC into another 'event' like the Soccer and Rugby World Cups, charge more for TV rights, advertising, and therefore ticket prices.

and another thing - why don't they try having 4 man teams, with neither of the singles players being allowed to play doubles.
I'm personally not in favour of it, but it's an option to bring a true 'team' element into it.
There argument got the ITF for the bidding process is because they claim that there is not enough time between the semis and final to organise a big event. I don't agree with this at all, when they didn't have a suitable venue, Belgium virtually created one, I know some people complained, but I thought it was ace. Plenty of facilities, more choice of good than any DC I have been to, plenty of parking. They are solving s problem that doesn't exist. Looking to hold it in the same place for 2 to three years is also really bad. They could lessen the impact of this awful choice by at least moving it every year. Say for example it's in Australia. Sometime their big guys don't play, but with the chance of s home final they would. So Australia could win the bid, all their top players could decide they want to play whilst it's at home. Win it at home for 3 YEARS. They all stop playing DC when it moves. I know my scenario isn't likely but I use it to point out that rather than being s neutral venue it could end up being 3 years worth of home finals for someone else. They ITF are looking for there version of a moving major tennis event that rolls in the money, and the ATP already have the WTF so they are trying it with Davis and fed cup.

Sorry, I think choice of surface can make an enormous difference - not only to the tie itself but often to the players involved before and after the tie. Andy practised on clay for a week before the WTF last year to be ready for the final in Belgium and thereby virtually negated any chance he had of doing well at the WTF. Neither Andy nor Djokovic played in Serbia because to change to clay from grass before the hard court swing and the Olympics would have been a nonsense for them. It would make more sense to me for the surface to be determined by the season.

Then discuss it and thrash it out.

The only reason for the venue change is to make more money.

Can't see myself that DC needs many changes, though scheduling isn't always ideal-however still wouldn't be happy for it to move to an biannual event. I don't think the proposed biding for final venues had been properly though out, could work out to be manageable for supporters but could also be a complete detriment to the climax of the competition. However in any case to me home/away ties creates the most passion and it would be a pity to lose that, part of the appeal. I don't think we necessarily need to copy other sports! There definitely needs to be consultation and a consensus on the way forward. Mind you Andy seemed to be quite happy with a move to best of 3 and know the Del Potro match was brutal even if very exciting to us, suppose if the only way to attract top players in the future suppose would need to be considered.
Maybe there could be a compromise - best of three until the final and then best of five, as they do in the Olympics. I agree though that there needs to be a period of consultation and a consensus reached between all the interested parties before any changes are made.
I still think that they need to leave it as it is, but run it biannually. I think in Olympic year it's simply too much. They don't do Ryder Cup every year do they?

I am surprised there is support for it from the players, certainly i'm not for it and I can't see many fans for it. We have been spoilt by having the ATP finals in London for so many years, money talks. I go a lot but if they were in Singapore, I would never go, nor would a lot of other Europeans
I am a big fan of 5 set tennis so I would hate to see it change to best of 3 but I understand why the players would want it. I would not be at all surprised to see Grand Slams move to best of 3 as well in the first week particularly. There has been a lot of talk of reducing the time of matches especially for TV. With virtually no serve and volley these days, and the players being so super fit, matches have just got longer and longer. I hope it doesn't happen ....
As for the bidding to host the final .... most ridiculous idea I have ever heard! It would ruin the atmosphere of DC and they would risk empty venues! Eg as JerryD said GB v France in Shanghai or Melbourne. Only a small minority would be able to travel for that surely?! The home crowd atmosphere is what makes DC. Are these people stupid or something?!! I can't belive Judy is in favour ... gobsmacked!

I'd go with allowing teams to nominate more players to give them more options if the first 2 matches are long five setters- and leave the rest well alone!

I absolutely hate it when they modify tennis matches and the scoring system (and even the time some players play) to suit TV schedules! It just seems so wrong to me!

I also dislike 3 sets. It's over before it's begun. If viewers don't have the attention span for 5 sets, there is always football! ;)
I think they should be increasing the women's grand slam matches to 5 sets (at least at the end of the tournament) not decreasing the men's to 3. The way to get the crowds in watching Davis Cup is for nations to get a great player like Andy so that the multitudes go along. Cutting them from 5 to 3 isn't going to change anything except annoy the people who've always loved tennis. I was watching 5 set matches at 8 years old. Those of us brought up on Wimbledon knew nothing different!

Can't do everything with the schedule the way it is. Otherwise more and more of the top players will not commit to DC
I could just about tolerate most of the changes if I had to (not saying I like them!) but the one I would absolutely hate, loathe and detest is the bidding for final venues. That would be an absolute nightmare and for me, and I suspect many more, is a HUGE NO NO. It's beyond stupid! :barmy:

I have seen something from BATS which says that French fan groups are very opposed to a neutral venue and wish to protest (so French! :pierre: wonderful! ) and have contacted BATS to see if we will join them along with all other fan groups. I can forward details if the mods would like to see and have not received a similar communication from France. I would be up for protesting with placards in audience as they suggest. :yak:
I was just about to share the contents of same email Rosalind. I don't think I will be able to make it to Canada but if that changed I'd be happy to hold a banner saying no to neutral venues and get involved in the protest. I should imagine if they have contacted bats they will have contacted other groups, and not just in the UK. Bats also suggested doing the same in April and September if we get that far. As the bidding process would have begun, I doubt it will change it, maybe delay it. It is worth a try though. This is the worst of the changes IMO

Couldn't agree more. Although I dislike the 3 sets idea I could just about live with it if it got top players involved (will it though I ask myself), but I can't express how violently I disagree with the neutral venue idea. Surely it will end up with the vast majority of the crowd being neutral (i.e. residents of the venue country) with only smallish contingents from both finalist countries Terrible, terrible idea. The fans make DC, just look how appreciated the fan support is by the players. It makes a difference to them on the court and gives the whole event character. I see a neutral venue as bland, bland, bland. Thank goodness we were luck enough to experience Ghent before they bring in this nonsense

Let's hope it will never happen! They wouldn't,..... would they??
Well they might but I don't think they will unless they get a consensus from the players. It seems to me that the players might give the nod to the best of three sets and playing over two days but I'm not so sure about a neutral final venue. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see.
Let's hope it will never happen! They wouldn't,..... would they??
They said the bidding process will begin in December so I got the impression that the decision on this one had already been made. I thought it was just the others that were being put forward for further discussion/agreement. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Couldn't agree more about the bidding business. Terrible idea! Can you just imagine us getting to the final again and then it being in Melbourne for example!! Moving to best of 3 sets is bad enough IMO but I guess if the players are in favour and it gets more top players playing then I could live with it. Something has to be done I guess (she saying grudgingly!)

Don't see why/how anyone can bid until we know who's in the final.
Cos if the highest bidder last year had been the O2 lets say?
As they believed we had a good chance of retaining it, then if it was only down
to Croatian and Argentinian fans to fill it then I'd have thought it wouldn't be a
money spinner for the O2 or any venue that isn't home to one of the finalists.
We could be wrong but I'm going to call the bookies to see what odds they will
give me on this tendering not being around in three years time.
Although Lynne's just thrown her hat into the ring saying, their gonna fill it with
corporate and make it elitist.
(Football) News flash just in: Richard Branson has won the bid to host the next
Euro's on the moon. Only problem? There will be no atmosphere.

Wuhan could bid - it was a riot of an atmosphere in the Konta match! There were at least 2 Chinese Kvitova fans who had made up a jolly little chant which they sung politely once each change of ends. The bright side is : the umpire wouldn't have to remind the crowd to keep quiet between serves or put down their flags during the rallies.
:crying:
Often many matches across the Asian swing are empty. Even though there was talk of them bussing spectators in and giving away tickets. I imagine a large chunk of money comes from sponsors and tv stuff so it probably doesn't matter financially to the bidding city if people go or not. I have seen finals in beijing empty and to keep the tournie. I can see places bidding on it, places rich enough to support an event no one goes to. It probably won't last. Maybe 3 years of selling it and cashing in will be enough for the itf and then they will bin it off and call it a failed experiment. They probably already know this going in.

Think I'll go for it...will cover the AO and the US open next year and that would have cost £14 anyway! Means I will be able to take in the ice skating as well as I quite enjoy it along with other winter sports.

I thought it was a great doubles match. Great atmosphere but very raucous crowd! I really laughed at Pascal Maria trying to control them! At one point the look on his face was priceless after trying unsuccessfully to curtail the crowd...a sort of "oh I give up" look. I think we were raucous too in our support at DC's, but we settled down as soon as the server was ready. It must have been distracting at times for the players. Anyone know any Croatian? Quite often Pascal Maria would say something that sounded like 'not up' to my untrained ear. At first I wondered why he kept saying 'not up' when it didn't apply, then penny dropped!....it must be something in Croatian he was saying!

I was surprised DelPotro played, his movement and volleying isn't really suited to doubles. The Croatians figured out early on to serve down the T to him and his forehand/backhand wasn't anywhere near as effective as it was in Glasgow in the singles. He looks like the weight of the event is wearing heavy on him. Thy don't have the option to rest him today like they did in Glasgow, he'll have to play.

Yeahhhh DelPo My hero just love ya!!!!!!:party:
What a dog fight that was, awesome play from both players, but well fought by del Potro, fantastic to see the fight back, Cilic must heartbroken...Kudos for the hours those guys have spent on court & the strength they get when playing for their country...
Mind that goes the same for our boy when playing for his country...no one can top him!!!!
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!
Have been too busy to watch - just popped in to check the score every so often.
What a fight-back from Delpo!!
Well well well! Delpo! A match well worthy of a DC final. What a happy crowd! They must be having a fab time. I had planned to do all sorts today! But there was no way I was going to leave this. And poor Cilic. I really do feel for him. He gave it his all. I don't ever remember him serving that good consistently. Both men were incredible. Next match intriguing. Mayer or Delbonis?
Well done, DelPo!

Certainly some comeback from Delpo and break at start of 5th for Cilic wasn't significant,so an interesting final rubbber to decide title!
Well done to Del Potro. The fans are certainly getting their monies worth today:)
