Great match from Andy. Played really well, against a potentially dangerous opponent. Fastest serve of his career and it was amongst a number of fast serves. He looks like the one to beat!! Go Andy! And now to bed!

So happy Andy gave me a calm match before my holiday! Probably his last match I will see (but with Frenchmen still in there I hope to find something on tv) and if he continues to play like that I fully expect him to lift the trophy as he so deserves! Sorry Dani, always thought Grigor was over-rated!

Think he did he did say if was a fluke as he didn't hit any others close to that speed I imagine he would know it was fast when he hit it and make a point of looking a scoreboard to see

Such an awesome and magical display from Andy, absolutely thrilled to see him give such a commanding performance ! Any doubts from previous round firmly swept aside, really took it to Dimitrov! However whilst obviously under pressure Dimi was also disappointing. Of course will be tougher matches to come but hopefully Murray continues in similar vein, should be confident!:clap::clap::boogie::boogie:

The only bad thing was his 1st serve percentage, he needs to get that up before Kei but if he dominates as much as tonight, it may not matter but it would be good to get it up to over 60% serves in.

His number of double faults is getting higher too which may be due to him going for it, instead of just rolling it in at a hittable mph, the more he serves good mph 2nd serves, the less he will double fault HOPEFULLY.

If Kei was watching, he will be scared lol, in fact, so would Novak, that is how good that was :-).

Point of the match, in my opinion, was the one where poor Grigor thought he had won the pt only for Andy to stretch his racket out to hit a winner crosscourt :-).

To be fair to Dimitrov he did also say Andy deserves all the credit today and I think what he meant was that's how he expected Andy to play as "right now is the best player out there". Although he seems to think it might have made a difference if he'd taken one of those first game BPs "Pretty unlucky I think the first game, especially with the two serves on the line". It wouldn't Dimi.

Proof of that serve.

Fantastic match - couldn't post and watch at the same time. Just dragged myself out of bed now and checking he still won

To be honest I really didn't expect it to be that easy, although the 2nd and 3rd sets were extended timewise by a number of deuces, the first set having only been 30 mins. I thought Andy played solidly and really didn't allow Grigor to get up once he was down, other than for a single break back in the second when Andy was already 2 breaks up. That said, I didn't think Grigor played well - he served badly and only seemed to come to any sort of life towards the end of the second set and during the 3rd by which time Andy was going for the jugular.

Let's hope Andy comes out in similar vein against Kei. With others having walkovers, if Andy is to get to the final, he could really do with some short matches and others having some long ones. Please oblige Stan/JM and JW against Nole!

Last night watching it live, after about 5 games I switched to the 'no commentary ' stream. Commies just couldn't shut up! Much better! Did my own commentary and formed my own opinions about the match. That opinion hasn't changed...a most fabulous match by Andy..Dimi just wasn't allowed a foothold. Brilliant Andy! So looking forward to his QF....I don't care what time it is on...I will be watching regardless!

The commentators (and that's a misnomer/euphemism) were dire. They were just chatting all through the points and rarely commented on the actual match. Wilander is a chronic offender. I had the sound turned down low enough that I could no longer hear what they were saying but could still hear the ball!

Dani looked very uncomfortable. After Berdy's comments, I'm a bit surprised Grigor engaged him. Players are going to start thinking Dani is still in Andy's camp and is feeding them misinformation

I was the same not being able to post much as having to watch on iPad but managed a few morsels at changes of ends. Also not long got up ... Oh the joy of being on holiday!

I think it's a bit much to call Grigor as ungracious loser! He must have been gutted with his performance! And he did credit Andy with being the best in the world at the mo.

I have to agree - we did see some flashes of the brilliance of which he's capable but that only highlighted how badly he was playing more generally and I don't think it was simply a case of Andy not allowing him to play well. He was uptight.

Andy is definitely extra motivated against the guys Dani moves on to. And when you think of the Wimbledon defeat to Dimitrov and the '10 minutes before' comment, when it seems Dani and others were raising objections to Amelie, I think Andy and his determination to always make a point, meant he was on fire. And very pumped to HIS team afterwards.

Absolutely fantastic performance from Andy.

Must say I didn't expect such an easy ride. Andy was in control all through, served better and just didn't let Dimi in.
Just what we needed after Sunday agonies.....never doubted he would win both times but great to see him cruising like that.
And so to Nishikori......... three tough opponents left on way to the final, have a feeling the next one would be Delpo rather than Stan.
And then undoubtedly Djoko unless Jo Wilf can help us out

I sighed when I heard who was to be commentating last night - one of Bradnam/Wilander is bad enough but the two of them together - ugh! I have to say, though, that last night they even surpassed themselves - droning on about total irrelevancies all through the points, whilst totally ignoring the match! Andy's performance was sublime - their's was the direst of dire. Wilander even managed to outclass Bradnam with his banalities - I didn't think I would ever see the day when Bradnam struggled to get a word in edgewise. Nothing could have ruined the match for me last night but I confess those two came close! I have e-mailed Eurosport to vent my spleen. :furious:

What did Berdy say about Dani? I must have missed that one.

“My results lately have not been what I expected. As I am not a tennis player at the beginning of his career I have to act quickly when I feel that I need a change,”
That's what Berdych put on social media. Not exactly glowing.

david1610
06-09-2016, 13:23
Andy was brilliant last night and even if Grigor had played his best tennis, it would have probably meant sets of one break rather than two breaks.
And there is a difference between high first serve percentage and the number of first serves (not just aces) you simply cannot get back. Andy himself said he got a lot of cheap points on his serving and what was key was how well he served in 15-30 or 15-40 situations.

Having said that, it just shows how match ups and tactics are so important. Andy got the "controlled aggression" just right last night, whereas against Lorenzi, as he admitted, he started out trying to be aggressive at the wrong times and creating UEs which created UEs which...

Proud to be a fan of somebody who plays tennis like Andy did last night! :)

PS Dani is... Dani. But he is not Roger Rasheed (who was talked of as a coach for Andy at one point). Dani cannot give a player Andy's stardust. He can at best make them best at what they are. Lendl can add that 1-2% to the confidence of players at the very top like Andy. Apart from Andy's tennis brilliance last night, the other incredibly pleasing thing was how well Andy kept his concentration throughout the whole match.

patlowe
06-09-2016, 14:00
Well summed up david1610. Agree with all you say, particularly about the serving. Andy has said himself that a more important stat to him is win % on serve (first or second) rather than first serve % in. Obviously it helps to get loads of first serves, but ultimately it's points won which matter.

Bardot
06-09-2016, 14:04
I think the only sensible comment from Wilander was about how misleading first serve percentages are. He said at the crucial points like 30-40 Andy was probably up about 80% but against that in the first point of the game it was probably about 18%. Obviously he'd like to improve this but it's not significant as it appears. In contrast to this clarity Wilander also said "If you win every match 6-1 6-1 6-1 you're never going to get a chance to improve". :barmy:

Alis
06-09-2016, 14:06
One of the interesting things that Wilander imparted last night - and they were few - was that first serve percentage doesn't count for as much as good serves when they are needed. Andy certainly did that last night. His serve managed to get him out of a few potentially sticky situations and that mattered.

I quite agree with you about Grigor's level of play, and he certainly looked uptight, but I think that was a response to the brilliant, sustained and aggressive (when needed) play Andy produced. Andy was aware of that and didn't allow Grigor to become comfortable. First few points Grigor did look menacing!!

Andy (who's always fair in his post match analysis) agrees with you. From his press conference.

I think Grigor played his best, but I didn't really give him a chance to get into the match.

I have generally got used to ignoring the "commentating" of certain people. But sometimes their twoddle comes through regardless. Along with many gems yesterday. A conversation about I.L bathroom breaks one about peeing in general. A comment about changing underwear and some about sunsets. There seemed to be no end to it. Even I couldn't ignore it. The comments about Davis cup being bad for Andy were particularly strange. I'm sure he wouldn't think so. I wonder what gems we have to look forward to tonight. Is petch available? Lol

Oh - don't we all ? You get a glow just watching. When the real Andy Murray turns up there is only one winner. And, yes, Dimi did look uptight but from the start he knew which way it was going to go and - sure enough - it got worse
