View Full Version : DAVIS CUP 2017, ROUND 1: AWAY to CANADA - fans support thread (NOT tickets)
I know Canada and the US are separate countries before any Canucks get upset but you need to find a bar like the one Kris Marshall went to in Love Actually!
I've got another day and a half in Ottawa. -13 degrees C today according to Google, the coldest day yet! :brr::brr::brr: I don't mind the cold but that's taking it a bit far even for me! Not the best weather for sightseeing is it?!

Mr Social Butterfly here just sat on his own in a bar for 3 and a half hours after SG left watching the Superbowl and getting a bit sozzled.
Apparently eugenie (bouchard) tweeted well done to the falcons earlier when they had such a lead at such a time that no team in superbowl history had ever lost from was challenged by some guy and she said she would go on a date with him if they lost

Such a shame that the AMFF group was so fractured. We were five in number and could not even manage one get together. Had to leave Ronnie near venue last night as I had to get taxi back and didn't want a repeat of Saturday when waited for over an hour for a cab that didn't turn up. So spent last night on my own in hotel. So much for going away with forum. Huge thanks to Hawkeye for his company all week.

Didn't realise you were still here - I don't go back till tomorrow either. Intended to go to the art gallery today but found out it's closed on Mondays, so went to the Bytown museum. Quite interesting.

It's easier if we are all in the same hotel, but it wasn't as bad as in Naples when we were very spread out. There, I spent my birthday evening on my own in my b&b! :crying: This time, four of us (you, me, Ronnie & Helen) met for drinks & a meal Thursday night, a different four (you, me, Ronnie & Roy) went to the posh Italian on Saturday night, and last night Fiona, Katie, Helen & I went to an Indian restaurant - you & Ronnie could have come too as I texted him to let you both know where we were. I don't know if you did anything Friday night; I was very tired so stayed in my hotel.
I'm finally all walked out. It's snowing again, so I was looking forward to getting back to Bonny Scotland only to find out that Scotland is to be hit by an Arctic blast...

Yeah apparently it's arriving in your suitcase
I am letting in an icy blast each time I go to get my wine off my balcony (no fridge in room).

 We just got back and what a difference in the weather. NO SNOW at all! And it's plus temps. So odd.
Having averaged about 4 hours of sleep every night I am really feeling it now. So cream crackered. And I can't even blame it on jet lag. You lot have WAY MORE stamina than I!
Hi Fiona. It was so lovely to see you again after all these years! And Katie is such a nice young lady. Helen and I realised that we hadn't said goodbye to her as she had disappeared just as we left, so please say goodbye to her from us.

No worries! It was great to meet up with you too. Hope you didn't have to wait too long for the bus. Have a safe journey home! Yes when we saw each other last Katie was 8 years old and SallyDaisy terrorised her driving in the car on one lane roads around High Wycombe. Anyway I'm glad you had a good time! And lovely to meet Helen too. She was a blast!

Never do things by halves me ... and those were TWO lane roads!!!
I just remember the girls being aghast that our major roads were so SMALL compared to Canada.
I now live somewhere that has places you can't get a car to at all.
You'll have to come and see ...

Friday night Maureen Ronnie and myself + John ate in joes before tennis and ate in Maureen's hotel in the evening, also we met up near the venue on Wednesday afternoon for quite a lengthy session
Ah, so it wasn't so bad. We all ate out together when we wanted to. I've just had an unhealthy takeaway delivered to my room. Why do takeaways in the UK not do deep fried zucchini? It is delicious.

2 lanes? I seem to recall you had to squeeze into a small space in a hedge in order to let the other car coming the opposite direction pass. In fact THIS is the thing the kids remember from that entire trip. And it's not just that the roads are small but that they wind this way and that, go up and down and have very tall hedges on either side.
And that Sally was doing about 70mph and cornering on 2 wheels? Or did you all have your eyes closed at that stage?

Flown BA to Manchester and now arrived home, Air Canada was the only direct one Heathrow to Ottawa. No way could Dan make it to Montpellier! The plane was great, so much legroom it felt like business class

I'll be there, hopefully we will get enough tickets

I think I prefer the Hawkeye "twist and shout" moment ;) :shades:
Now at Toronto awaiting second flight.
. . . which is also delayed. Should have left an hour ago. They still can't tell us when we are likely to start boarding.
After a mad dash through Toronto airport, I made it to the gate with minutes to spare. Flight left the gate on time, and then sat on the tarmac for 2 and a half hours as every plane leaving was being de-iced. Of course, this meant I landed at Schiphol just as my connection was leaving. Re-arranged flight is at 1545 CET. Happy birthday to me!

Sounds really awful ...and we were praising them on how well they dealt with the weather even having a mini snowplough to clear the pavements, weather must have got much worse on Tuesday, we had a delay towing our plane from the stand, the wheels were slipping they had to put down some sand, then we had de-icing but it didn't take that long, we must have left about 40 minutes late but with no connection will still arrived in London close to scheduled time. Anyway happy birthday Hawkeye!

Just coming too after a long sleep, think i've slept 14 hours since i got home
Just got home - my flight was delayed four and a half hours as they had to carry out maintenance to one of the engines  Hope Ronnie will soon be home too.
Well, I'm back in Scotland at least, but a fair way from home... But my suitcase is having so much fun that it has decided to stay a while longer it would appear.
Maybe it's stopped at duty free to buy you a birthday present!
Seriously, though, that's awful - hope it soon turns up.
Home sweet home. At last! Any news on your bag??
Home sweet home.
I've always said it's the best bit about going away.
I remember buying a spike Milligan joke book when I was around 10,
and the joke that made me laugh the most was....
Why do you keep hitting yourself on the head with that hammer?
Cos it feels so good when I stop.
Hope you get your bag back.;)
Looks like my bag, unlike me who is built like an athlete (shot putt), didn't make the short turnaround in Toronto, and is due to get to Aberdeen this afternoon.
Glad you are getting it back. Not surprised it missed the flight with such a short turnaround.
My bag is obviously a sprinter as it was first on the carousel at Gatwick!

Think it's probably having such a competitive owner that did it Linda
The wanderer returns, my case is back! Time to do some laundry...
Now that my bag is back, I managed to snaffle two of the t-shirts handed out by the LTA (they were spare, not pinched!). One has already been claimed, but I have an XL up for grabs if anyone is interested. The style is the same as the Serbia and Argentina tie ones. Anyone interested? If so, I'll get it posted out. Might have a wee silent auction for a forum-supported charity.

Are any of you who went to Canada going to do a blog?? (Pretty please)

I suppose this has already gone by now, but I'd be interested - XL would be like a dress on me but hey i'm game
Only 2 notes of interest so far, including yours. I'll give it a week and then we'll have a silent auction for charity.
One of the things that annoyed me about Ottawa was that the price you saw for food and drink was never the price you paid, as they never included the tax that you always had to pay.
Was talking about this with my mum and dad today and they told me that I could have claimed it all back at the airport... But then we never took the separate bills we were always offered so I wouldn't have had the proper receipts.
I didn't think you could claim it back for things consumed in the country - I thought that was only for purchases of things to take home, on which you would have to pay UK duty.

Same in US - their VAT price equivalent is never on the price ticket!
