Can't believe the pressure, lost last three 5-4 Cmon Andy this time!!!!!
5-4, this time PLEASE Andy.
Apparently this is Nishikori's longest ever 3 set match and Andy's longest this year and also the longest on Tour this year.
"What's Andy thinking now?" asks Castle. More like what is Lendl thinking now.

:yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::dance::dance::dance::yahoo:: yahoo::yahoo: Sheer determination from Andy but a great match from Kei too. I hope it's Kei who plays Djokovic in the semis.

Bravo Andy! Andy was pretty poor a lot of the time, Kei was pretty special, and yet Andy still gets the W - that's how good Andy is. Well done Andy, and bad luck Kei, but sorry duckie, that's what world number ones do :rolling:
Andy obviously took advantage of a 2 for 1 special with a haircut & shave. Looking good.
At last; not his finest but we'll take it! Andy please, go and rest and find your 1ST serves and ACES for Friday.
Kei replaces Daveed as the match-up inducing long deep anticipatory breaths and sighs. ;)
Sheer grit and determination. That's our Andy. Well done that man
Just come back. My phone flashed up just as we finished. Thank goodness for that double fault that gave him the insurance break. He needed it.
He truly is a Lionheart. Well done top man.

such an epic battle and Kei was such a challenge, however Andy even if patchy at times found a way to step up on most of the key moments and got through via willpower and determination. Just as well he had a decisive lead in the 3rd or it could've become very tight, a bit of help from Kei at the end though. Perhaps on court longer that would've liked but it shouldn't be too much of a factor moving forward, Andy's class shone through and fitting of status that he had the answers in the end. :cheer::cheer::cheer::cheer::clap::clap:
Wow that was close!
I got back at 6-6 in the first set TB!!!
Very well done Andy :clap::clap:

Just as Djoko did yesterday, Andy came through somehow. Neither of them are prepared to lose and find something from somewhere, somehow.
That extra ability to find the shot, the determination and the sheer b.....y mindedness not to give in.
Well done Andy, rest up and come out gunning against Stan
Oh my word! How is everybody??!! Bottom line...isn't our WORLD #1 something else!! A HUGE W! That was actually a great match, it had everything. Both guys refusing to give up...makes for great stuff. Kei is a lovely ball striker, he hits every corner relentlessly. But Andy has the extra guts, determination, fortitude....simply that extra dimension that world #1's have. I expected a tight match and I also expected Andy to come through it so well done our brave hero.:bravo::cheer::clap::phew: I haven't managed to read this thread yet (been recovering from match!) so I'm off now to lap up all that has been posted. I guess we are a bunch of happy bunnies!

Well, that was a real humdinger, a battle, a veritable Murraycoaster. But he did it, bless him. Was praying supergramps wouldn't arrive home from Kershaw Centre before Andy clinched it. They arrived during on-court interview having been held up in traffic jam. It was very tense wasn't it but always had my optimism and faith he would do it. Hope we get the right result tonight. Relax everybody!

I only caught the last couple of games when I got in from work, but going to watch the recording tonight. Hubby was texting me score updates all afternoon (he should have been working, but being self-employed he decided he was going to watch Andy instead -I've got him well trained!).
From what I can gather it was a humdinger of a match, with Andy squeaking through even though not at his best. That's the thing now with Andy, he's finding a way to win no matter what.
BTW saw Roy on telly near the end of the match. Hubby said there was a great shot of him waving his flag earlier in the third

I'm confused! The 'right result' would be...? I also don't understand how Djok is def through after having won 2 matches but Andy isn't after having won 2 matches also??? Is it to do with Andy needing the extra set today? I always have trouble computing all the permutations!

That sums the match up well Kath. I think you will enjoy it less stressfully knowing the result! And yes, there was a great shot of Roy standing up all by himself waving his flag with gusto and another glimpse of him later. Well done Roy! You are a true fan. It's such fun that I can now recognise some of the spectators thanks to AMFF!!

RR format means it's not always clearcut hence a lot of permutations.
Also, the McEnroe group positions won't be clear until after tonight's matches which complete their 2nd day.

I think it's because Thiem and Raonic have both won one match, but now have to play each other, so only one of them can end up with at least 2 wins. In Andy's group the result of the match tonight should help to sort his group out - at the moment 3 of them could potentially end up with 2 wins each. (I think!!)
We need Cilic to beat Stan tonight for Andy to be sure of his place with one RR match still to go. If Stan were to win tonight and beat Andy on Friday, he could go through either on his set/game count or on the strength of his H2H with Andy and could top the group. Either Cilic or Kei could go through if they win on Friday and have a better set/game count than Andy. If it's a tie, Andy goes through because he has beaten them both. In the other group, however, only Raonic or Thiem can record two wins and if it's a tie on set/game count Djoko would top the group as he has beaten them both. I think that's how it works but I probably haven't explained it very well!

Well done Andy for getting through but this will have taken a lot out of him and potentially 3 very tough matches to come.

But Murray has a 9:7 H2H against SW, even if SW beats him, Murray will still lead the H2H?

I meant the H2H in this tournament not overall. I think the only way Andy doesn't go through is if Stan beats Cilic tonight and beats Andy on Friday and either Kei or Cilic - who have both lost to Andy - have a higher set/game percentage than Andy. It's probably unlikely but it could happen.

I've been celebrating in ask italian with Rosalind, jimmyg and Anne marie - murraynators, belgrade etc. What an amazing contest, neither at their very best but another result grinded
out by Andy, everyone around me were amazed how I never doubted that he would find a way to win, laughed when I offered Kei my glasses after a poor challenge in front of us...and again when I shouted challenged when the next point was called out. Hopefully I have encouraged 3 or 4 to join the forum, mainly people from Scotland one next to me had been to the us open. Just drinking my irish coffee before heading home, think I will need a day for my voice to recover, feel like I'm higher on adrenaline than alcohol, think Andy appreciated the support today, by far the best, I reckon, that he has ever had at the o2.
Bravo Andy! Andy was pretty poor a lot of the time, Kei was pretty special, and yet Andy still gets the W - that's how good Andy is. Well done Andy, and bad luck Kei, but sorry duckie, that's what world number ones do :rolling:
Did a double take there......did you really say Andy was poor? :big grin: :getcoat:
Andy obviously took advantage of a 2 for 1 special with a haircut & shave. Looking good.
Or was the struggle the Samson effect?
Brilliant match from both players. To be honest I feel this is the quality of tennis we should be getting all the time when the top 8 are playing each other. Some matches have really been a bit of a damp squib.
Well done Andy for getting through but this will have taken a lot out of him and potentially 3 very tough matches to come.
Surely it won't have taken that much out of him given he's got a day off and this isn't a slam with 5 set matches. I know it was long but still.....

Managed to follow most of this on trains and through family texting me.
It was so tense!
What a battle!
Well done Andy!
I am amazed that Kei took a set!
So now we need to root for Cilic tonight! Again! And I don't even like him!
I am amazed that Kei took a set!
Well he's no slouch and he IS #5!
Some quotes from Andy's press conference gleaned from twitter.
I'm a bit tired obviously. You tend to feel it more the following day. I was in the ice bath after the match.
Tomorrow will be a bit sore but it's positive I get a day's rest tomorrow.
Especially the 1st set, he (Kei) was dictating almost all of the rallies. There weren't many quick points on his serve.
It was tough, he does move the ball around maybe better than anyone.
There was nothing in it. I think the 3rd set, I got off to a quick start. The 2-1 game was very important.
I had a big enough lead at 5-1 to just finish it off at 5-4. He came back well.
He could have won in two sets for sure. He had a number of chances.
I didn't feel like I was hitting the ball as well as I would've liked. It was frustrating.
Nothing was making me hit the ball cleaner. As the match went on, I was becoming frustrated and became sarcastic with myself.
On fist pumping when losing points "I was being sarcastic with myself. I was being more sarcastic toward myself than usual."
It could come down to a match between me and Novak. Who knows what's going to happen. It would probably be the perfect end of the year.
Both me and Novak just want to win the tournament. But for the tennis world, it would be the best ending.
I think there should be points at the Olympics. We'd all play regardless. Winning a gold medal was one of the proudest moments.
I had to change some things. I was a metre closer to the baseline from 1st to 2nd set. I had to change.
The ability to make slight adjustments and change is a very important thing.
It's one of the things the top players do well. They're able to make changes and adjustments.
There was also this answer which I wonder if it's to do with UnderArmour's links with hunting which might become an issue for Andy.
I do love animals and don't want them getting killed unnecessarily for fun.

One of the most stressful matches I have ever watched. Jackie will witness the fact that I couldn't watch several points!!!!!
This match was amazing. Absolutely over the moon to have seen it live. The longest atp world tour final match according to croft. I don't know how the players do it, I was tired just watching them!
What a match! I managed to avoid the result and watched it when I got home from work / swimming. Fabulous tennis, very tense and yes exhausting! Right result in the end though. Look forward to reading through the thread at lunch break.

Yes yet another fantastic one to add to the many memorable Andy matches I have been at over the years, great to be in such an atmosphere, Andy has never enjoyed this level of support at the o2 before this year and he has definitely appreciated the support in both matches. Happy to have a day off today, I need it as much as Andy does!
Am liking very much that Andy is finding ways to win all these tough matches. The mark of a world number 1 player.
Liking also that he's beaten Cilic and Kei - 2 of the few players to have beaten him over the last 6 months.
Stan will be a challenge tomorrow - and am mindful that Stan beat him here last year. But then again, there was Davis Cup on the horizon last year - and a year is a long time in tennis. andy probably installed as favourite and hopefully will fulfil that prediction.
It is worth noting that this is the first time that Andy has won 2 matches in a row in the world tour finals since it has been held in London. The last time he did that was in 2008 - his first tour finals appearance I think - when he won all his RR matches.
