You think it can't get any better, the highs can't get higher then he does something that even you yourself can't believe is possible. No words to do it justice, the fortitude both physically and mentally to push himself harder, to get better, to improve. I said hoped there would be justice in the O2 tonight. I got my wish.

I love the fact that the trophies lack any subtlety at all. They are full on, in your face **** you trophies. Look at me I am the best.

I also loved the look on his face "What - you mean they are both for me?"

I will be honest, I couldn't see him pulling this off. I thought the Raonic match would catch up with him.

What a win against Nole! What a year! Congratulations to Andy and his achievement! I really wanted Andy to play Nole in finals to confirm his number 1 place. Now, nobody'll be able to tell something "bad" about him^^ :bravo:
Next step: Australian Open please (the 1st he had to win indeed haha)

He didn't express his joy^^
Did he give a speech? I didn't hear it, except Nole's one, TV ends broadcasting before...

What a WTF finals we have had and what a tennis fest these last few months. Stunning! I think Andy was secretly storing and reserving his play tonight for when he met Nole! Oh boy folks...I'm so emotional! And I heard you Anna....telling Andy he could do it! He must have heard you! I always knew Andy could easily beat Nole these days, but to do it knackered! What on earth were we worried about! He definitely was in his 'no way I'm going to lose this match' mood! WELL DONE AGAIN OUR #1 HERO. Spoty?

This means so much because Andy has been in the shadow of all 3 of the other members of "the big 4" for so long, it would have been easy for him to accept simply being a damn fine player and the best British player for generations - but he has NEVER stopped striving, NEVER stopped working, NEVER stopped improving, and now at long last he stands atop of the mountain as the best in the world, and - I'll say it again for it surely must now be indisputable - one of the greatest of all time! :) :) :)

What's left for the naysayers?? He's beaten all the top players on the way to this title!
If anyone doubted he was worthy of that #1 trophy ...

Beat #2 Djokovic in the Final.
Beat #3 Wawrinka in the RR3 in an epic match setting an ATP tour Final record of 3hrs
Beat #4 Raonic in the Semi-Final in an even more epic match and new record of 3hrs 38mins
Beat #5 Nishikori in the RR2 in an epic match setting an ATP tour Final record of 3hrs 20m
Beat #7 Cilic in the RR1

So here's a message to the Nay-sayers.

Wow!! What a night!!! Andy was a man on a mission - that mission being to show the world in no uncertain terms *exactly* who is #1. He had no favours with the groups or the schedule and he did precisely what worlds numbers 1s do - he said no bother, because I'm the best it's about how I play not who I play. Bravo Andy! I wouldn't have it any other way - he came through the tough way then wiped the floor with Novak for good measure. Hope everyone enjoyed tonight (I certainly did, screamed my heart out for Andy), we've just watched the changing of the guard, and boy does Andy deserve to be on top of the world. :trophy::gold::superman::boogie:

I am just wondering, did yesterdays match against Milos maybe force Andy to go for it a bit more and be aggressive and not wanting the rallies to go long?

But it is all positive for future meetings, knowing that he CAN play aggressive against top players and win.

Fantastic from Andy and Jamie, thank god because Scotland football team EMBARRASS me!!

Oh my goodness, what a couple of days!! I am so, so happy right now! He did it, our champion is the world champion! I was literally sobbing when he won. What an amazing, amazing last few months.

RB, I am delighted for you that you we able to be there. Gill and I were there yesterday along with a few more forummers, some of whom stayed on for today's match. Yesterday was the most nerve wracking match I think I have ever seen live. We were wrecks come the end, but celebrated in style last night. I feel privileged to have been there.

And then there was tonight .... Gill and I kept looking at viagogo, debating whether to Buy tickets. It would have been tight with trains and it was a lot of money for the lower tier (we hate the gods). But we should have just gone for it!

Some quotes from Andy's press conference.

I don't think that was one of me and Novak's best matches. The end of the match was exciting. But there were mistakes from both of us. I was solid enough when I needed to be. Tactically, I played a good match. It was a good performance. You don't beat a player like Novak without playing well. It was a big match against someone who I've played so many big matches against. He's my main rival. The 4-1 game was a tough one to lose. I didn't serve my second serve well at all today. He was starting to hit the ball better and get close to the baseline. So that last game was a tough one. I felt tired. I slept well last night but I didn't feel great this morning. I was hitting the ball fine (in practice) but I was just a bit heavy legged. The first 7 games, there were no really long rallies. Which is strange for me and Novak.

I would like to try and stay there (at No.1). It's taken a huge effort to get there. I had a great this year, and only did it by one match. It'll be difficult. I'm motivated to try and stay in that position. It's not so much the ranking, it's everything he's [Novak] achieved. I have massive respect for him as a player. I've won a lot of matches, he's not been playing his best. In the important moments, I was just a bit more solid. When me and Novak speak with each other, we just talk about each other's families and children. We spoke about the difficulty of keeping the balance in your life. Both of us have been with our wives a long time. We've known each other a very long time. We have a good relationship, regardless what some of you may think.

I want to try and achieve as much as I can these next few years. I won't be around forever. Mentally this will give me a boost going into next year again. These next few years, I want to make them the best of my career. The young ones will keep improving, there are some good ones coming through.

This year has been hard in some ways, because of Roger and Rafa missing large parts of the year. The two of them have large fan bases. They're charismatic guys and are very popular. I hope they come back healthy. It (tennis) will be better if they're fit.

Andy on celebrating tonight: You wanting to join again? There's no party tonight. I haven't been home the last few nights. Tomorrow, we'll go out for dinner and maybe see afterwards...

All of the big events I won this year, they're different. The Olympics felt really special. t was a big week for me that one.The Olympics for me in terms of one match was the most special.

I can't help but think how over the ten years that I've supported Andy some of my friends have been quite scathing about him (and that's putting it mildly), which makes tonight all the sweeter!! So proud of him. Such mental strength today! You could see it meant more to Novak than he was letting on, and I think the nerves got to him a bit, but Andy was so strong he just wasn't going to let it go. Well done, laddie! Great job

Just back at my hotel, and what can I say? It was quite simply amazing. If I'm honest I thought after yesterday's match that Andy would be running on empty today. How wrong could I have been? Andy was simply fantastic. I can't say anymore than that, he was just so so good. The crowd were great and no doubt who most people wanted to win.
Although I was upper tier I had a great view from the front row. I couldn't see Rosie Bear but I definitely heard her - I think I must have been sat above you RB.

I am just ecstatic that Andy is the year end no.1. All the naysayers can just shut up now, he's beaten 5 of the other top 10 players this week alone. Everybody else now knows what we on this forum have known for years, Andy is simply best

I admit I had doubts after yesterday, but as Andy said in his Sky interview afterwards -he had doubts about his fitness - so I am in good company!!

Unbelievable, amazing, wonderful and so well deserved!:clap::boogie::boogie::gold:

Well done to the optimists who believed and hope everyone who was there had a ball!

Still remember tears and misery after 2010 Oz Open final when it seemed Andy might stay plucky runner-up. NO MORE!

Just watching and Andy has been brilliant, great aggression but Nole has been woeful. How he's got to the final playing that dross I don't know. Nishikori needs to have a look at himself losing 1&1 to that.

Absolutely thrilled beyond words as most of us are. He played a magnificent match and after the first set I was euphoric and very optimistic. We have had so many wonderful moments with Andy but this tops the lot to date. Still can't believe it. I really don't know how be does it but if he keeps on doing it we have more joy, pride and gratitude to come. Well done everyone for loyal support on here and at tournaments throughout the year. Andy has made this rather stressed out lady very happy today.

Break point for Andy.

I think none of their first sets have ever gone to a tie break. Am I right?

Oooh Stell, just a wee first set tb at the USO 2012.....but you knew that, heat of the moment was getting to you.

Slightly late onto this as I tend not to open up the computer at weekends. But spent a lot of time in the company of Andy and the telly, and what a rewarding time it was. Still can't get over how he played against Novak after the Roanic marathon.

There are still a lot of scathers out there if my facebook timeline is anything to go by. But the fact he's featuring so strongly on it says plenty too. People I thought had zero interest in tennis are mentioning him and recognising him now for what he is - Number 1 in the world!!

My favourite quote from Guardian comments

I am sure everyone is aware that on half of all medieval maps Ireland and Scotland were the same place and vice versa on the other half. Good, glad we are one on that! Thus Murray can safely be said to be the greatest Irish tennis champion since John McEnroe... Britain eat your heart out! ;)

By the way, it was very nice of the ATP to address their advert for their new app directly to me. At changeovers they played the advert a few times, it started with "Love tennis? get the new ATP app..." Really they didn't need to that just for me ;)

Well I'm still grinning from ear to ear this morning. And I think RB has said it already really but I'll say it in my own words:

He HAD to beat Nole, not just to retain #1 but to prove he'd deserved to be there in the first place and it wasn't just a fluke.

Well he did it, ok against a below par Nole, BUT.........did Nole take him to a tiebreaker? No. Did Nole take a set off him? No. Did Nole get close in any set? No. So Andy not only beat him, he beat him in the manner in which the world #1 SHOULD beat a below par world #2! AND when physically and mentally exhausted.

Just WOWWWWW!!! What a man.

Still smiling this morning - what a wonderful journey we've been on the last 10 years - we always knew Andy would get to this point and so what if it took longer than we expected - we've been in the best era tennis has ever had and Andy has had to overcome some incredible players over the years in this journey - this week was a case in point - overcoming the no 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 en route to the title. Novak had an easy run to the final in comparison ...

So unbelievably proud of our boy.

Love reading all your comments on here! What a match. I have to admit to being a bit nervous beforehand, like many others, just because of how much that Raonic match had taken out of him (and us - I was a wreck at the end of that one!). But from the very first point you could see he meant business and there was no way Nole was getting the better of him this time. In Andy's own words "I have a ***** big heart". Can't argue with that. What a wonderful year it has been for Andy and for us, finally all the pieces are falling in to place.

I've also loved seeing all the messages from other tennis players, past and present, and other sports stars congratulating Andy. I think it shows how highly he's thought of amongst his peers, a true measure of the man. Of course we've all known it for years and years but finally it seems the rest of the world is catching on :)

Cheers Andy, for shining a bright light on this crazy turbulent year, for giving us all so much to cheer and even more to look forward to in 2017.

He will get one. He assured that, the moment Djokovic netted that ball at Wimbledon in 2013. It's just a matter of when.

I am still in lala land and trying to read every paper on the stands. Just so excited about Andy's amazing achievements. The only negative is that.....there's no tennis to plan my days around for a few weeks. Will feel a bit flat before long.
But am being constantly cheered by all my associates who had teased me about Andy 'lagging at the bottom of the four' up till now today saying ' Well Done, he was great - you always believed in him' . So satisfying! Bet its happening to a lot of you.

So now we go into Andy-free weeks and can only wish him a great rest, and some special time with his family and true friends

Really hard to come down to earth! And really hard not having tennis to watch, though I think after last week, it would be hard to replace the level of tennis we've been watching and become used to....for the moment anyway. But it's good to know that Andy can now have a very well earned and deserved rest. I have been lapping up all the reports and interviews etc I can find...can't get enough! But worried I am becoming a basket case!...every interview, tweet and accolade which dwells on how phenomenal Andy is and esp on how hard he works really makes me very emotional...I just well up. Maybe it's simply cos I am so proud of him! Glad I have supported him from the very beginning, great reward for doing so and can't be accused of jumping on the bandwagon!

Unfortunately I don't have time to read everyone's comments but I know you will all be feeling the same as me. Absolutely ecstatic, been grinning from ear to ear all day. What a year, just amazing. I feel so privileged to have gone on Andy's wonderful journey and so proud of all he has achieved. This one has made me more emotional than all his other great wins. When he got there a few weeks ago there were still people saying he didn't deserve it. Silly idiots. Don't they know never to doubt our Andy as he will just prove you wrong haha!

I love that he and Jamie at the top together. A bit more Murray history. Others may have won few more slams but Andy and Jamie make their own unique history and I for one love that far more than just a number.

What a humble, modest, lovely, hard working, gutsy, talented, utterly unique and every other superlative you can think of, champ we have. We are so very lucky to have him and I've enjoyed every moment so far. Can't wait for the next Murray chapter of sporting (and all round) greatness.

Getting emotional again so I'm off to do the ironing!
