The 2 semis and 8 relegation playoffs have started (which will obviously affect our options for 2018 as we can draw any of the 8 lowest ranked teams in r1), the Belgium Aussies tie could be a cracker, almost wish I was there, can Nick get the Aussies through or will Goff and home advantage get Belgium to their second final in three years?
I have little interest in the other semi, can't see it being much of a contest, not many top ranked players, Cilic being highest overall, Goff in the semis and Thiem in group1
Our only definitely at home possible options are Czech, Italy, Germany or Canada (other possible homes definitely will be seeded for sure and only possible in qf/sf/fin), if any seeds loose Czech and then Italy will become seeded, obviosly not good for our home tie chances if Germany or Canada(unlikely) lose
Early news Japan are 2-0 verses Brazil
Kazakhstan v Argentina in 1st rubber and dc warrier Kukushkin leads Pella 6-7 7-6 6-2
Some interesting team news Germans playing their #4 Struff and #6 Stebe which seems a bit of a risk in Portugal v Sousas
If we got a home tie, where would it be?
Kukushkin beats Pella 6 - 7 (5 - 7), 7 - 6 (7 - 5), 6 - 2, 6 - 4 to give Kazakhstan the early lead against Argentina.

If we got a home tie, where would it be?
$64,000 question. The LTA will try and push it for a big venue and sell it as if Andy was playing. The likelihood is he won't play so I think they'll go for somewhere like Coventry, which served them well recently.
I remember we beat Russia in Coventry in 2013. I still remember walking out of the stadium and the Russian supporters wishing us luck for the world group play off against Croatia.

That was an amazing tie! My favourite ever .... until 2015 ;) We came from 2-0 down on the Friday to win and Evo also came from behind to win the final rubber. Boy do I miss Evo :crying:

The Belgium v Aussie tie looks like it'll be a cracker. Great to see Goffin win. Got a bit of a soft spot for both teams after they were our semi and final opponents in the Great Victory of 2015, but if have to choose I'll support Belgium as they were such great hosts over that glorious weekend in Ghent.

both semis all square, Argentina, Swiss and Germany all square, Russia down but hoping to be all square except that Khachanov now 2-4 in the third

That was a fascinating match! I sort of expected Nick to win it, but he had to work very hard for the win. Steve played really well, but what happened him in the 4th set? He seemed not to try? Lleyton Hewitt was so animated! He was up and down like a jack in the box all the time. It looked to me as if there were loads of empty seats. And also, did anyone notice the Belgian fan wearing his red t shirt and red tartan kilt!!?

Germany get their comeback win so lead 2-1, possible home tie for us if they can win another tomorrow, also Canada if they win might be the only other definite home option

The holders are out, Schwartzman fought back to get to a tiebreak but lost 6-4 6-4 7-6 as Kukushin put Kazakhstan through. Astana would be pretty long and costly. Think that means Czech become seeds (if they get through) so now only 3 definite home ties left (Kazakhstan is by lots just like Canada was)
Haase is winning against Vesely 6 - 1, 1 - 6, 6 - 3.
Laaksonen wins the first set against Zhyrmont 6 - 2.
Sousa winning against Struff 0 - 6, 7 - 6 (7 - 3), 6 - 3.
Haase one game away from levelling the tie for the Netherlands against the Czech Republic.

Canada didn't do too badly. Wasn't it 4 sets? Let's be honest JM was on fire that day too.
Yes, but Nestor was clearly the weak link IMO.
Struff has beaten Sousa 6 - 0, 6 - 7 (3 - 7), 3 - 6, 7 - 6 (8 - 6), 6 - 4. Germany are through to the draw.
Laaksonen beats Zhyrmont in four sets 6 - 2, 6 - 2, 5 - 7, 6 - 2 to level the tie.
Rosol wins the first set 6 - 3. But, de Bakker has just levelled the match by winning the second set 6 - 4.
France are through to the final as Tsonga beats Lajovic 2 - 6, 6 - 2, 7 - 6 (7 - 5), 6 - 1.

France have to be favourites but in Davis Cup NOTHING is certain.
All those fans who had tickets this weekend for the tie in Belgium were well entertained and got good value for money. Lucky them!

Our only definitely at home possible options are Czech, Italy, Germany or Canada (other possible homes definitely will be seeded for sure and only possible in qf/sf/fin), if any seeds loose Czech and then Italy will become seeded, obviosly not good for our home tie chances if Germany or Canada(unlikely) lose

I didn't see it all, but did watch end of Krygios v Darcis match on Friday and the Sunday singles in Aus v Bel tie. It was a really exciting tie .... just made me miss being at DC all the more. There truly is nothing like DC and you can't beat it in my book. I would love to see Belgium win, they fought so hard at the weekend and always seem to step up. Go Belgium!
Haven't caught any tennis in a while but I was so happy both France and Belgium made it through. Despite liking players from both teams, it's not hard to pick a side for the final. Like Caro I'm with Belgium. I would love to see them take the trophy. Go Belgium!

Canada have to play Croatia in Croatia next Feb. That'll be REALLY tough. Hope Cilic is off that weekend.
Just wondered whether anyone is thinking of going to the final in Lille?

Not far to go but I have commitments that weekend. Are you going Linda?
The BBC will be showing the final from 1pm (13.00pm) tomorrow on their website. Pouille plays Goffin, first, then Tsonga plays Darcis.
Thanks Stell I have been looking around to see who was showing it. Online is a pain though :(

Is it not on Eurosport?
I think they stopped showing it at the end of last year.

Good luck to Goffin, the little Belgian bun. Really like the French players, but rooting for the Belgies this time. Should see some super stylish tennis :cheer:
Anyone have a score update? I'm at work and forgot my phone so I can't check! What a nightmare  Go Belgium!!!

Goffin 2-0 in 3rd and cruising. Hopefully Steve "Mr Davis Cup" Darcis has a good chance against JWT in next rubber.

GSM Belgium! Goffin on fire, one way traffic :worship:
Think JWT could have his hands full - got nervy in 2014 final & never faced Darcis before, who can be awkward...
RosieBear

First set JWT.
And now a break up in 2nd, some good points but Jo too much of a heavy weight for Darcis.
RosieBear
24-11-2017, 17:00
Jo 2 sets up and mullering Darcis, so much for my prediction this could be a tricky one for him
Tsonga won 6 - 3, 6 - 2, 6 - 1.
I read, this morning, about Gasquet and Herbert replacing Mahut and Benneteau for tomorrow's doubles match.
iI wonder why Mahut isn't playing - is he injured?
Yannick Noah didn't say why.
Their opponents will be Bemelans and de Loore today.

Certainly an entertaining doubles match, France would appear to be in the driver's seat-that 3rd set could well have been crucial-some great play from both teams after the 1st when Belgium got into it. France just a bit better in the end though. I'd still prefer France to take it anyway bu a 5th rubber would v be interesting-Tsonga may clinch it though but Goffin may well make him battle.Whilst great BBC have coverage (online, connected TV's) pity not on main channel.

Wasn't able to watch yesterday's matches so I enjoyed the doubles, even if the outcome wasn't the one I wanted. Don't give up Belgium
Rats! Much as I love to watch French players, I was really hoping that Belgium would take the doubles. Still all to play for though - go Belgium!!
Surely even the most ardent Belgian fan would concede that 2-1 France after the doubles was pretty much a stick on. Was always going to come down to Goffin winning his singles and hoping for a 5th rubber IMO.
RosieBear
25-11-2017, 18:14
Definitely. Even if the Belgians had taken that tight 3rd set, still think France would have won in 5. The reds played really well, but Gasquet and Herbert are in a different league.

Impressive display from Goffin but bit disappointed in Tsonga, edgy after that first set and didn't really do himself justice. Still building up to possibly an exciting climax.
Just put the BBC's stream on, showing a long view of the arena. Now THAT'S a venue worthy of a final!

4-0 in the third. It looks as though France have it. Sadly, Darcis is no match for Pouille today. The Belgians really needed to win the doubles to have any chance of success. Well played France though!

Bit painful for Darcis n that last set and so pity for him, however even if not stiffest challenge in deciding rubber well done to Pouille as he still had to clinch it. France in stronger position after doubles and even if Goffin excelled in singles France were the better team and happy for them to take it again. Well done Jo, Richie,Lucas and Pierre Hughes for their crucial roles!:clap: Still a good run for Belgium even if they fell short.

Champions Tennis from the Albert Hall next weekend, although I don't think it is being televised. I am going Thursday afternoon.
A bit like us, the Belgians need a strong number two - Goffin can't do it all on his own.
Yes, with Darcis seemingly carrying an injury, there was no-one else to put in his stead. If Pouille had been injured, France could have put Gasquet in. It's almost impossible to win the Davis Cup without at least three top players (I am still amazed that we did it!).
I think it's absolutely amazing that Belgium have been in the final two out of the last three years - well done, Belgium!
RosieBear
26-11-2017, 19:09
3 top singles players is great but the key is nabbing the doubles. Look at what Berdy and Steps did together - a top singles player and a dubs supremo. 2 titles and a final. Wardy was a legend against the US in 2015, but if/when Andy and Jamie are both fit and in them team another title will be within reach regardless of who else we field!

So am I. That match against Simon at Queens, when AM simply refused to lose summed it up. He had decided to win the Davis Cup that year, and nothing was going to stop him.
I think it was either John Lloyd or Andrew Castle who said, last April, that France would win the final.
I only managed to watch part of the doubles and the last rubber yesterday ... managed to invite my inlaws round for Sunday lunch, what was I thinking?!! Gutted for Belgium and the lovely wee Goff. Agreed with all the comments about how sad he looked. I was really hoping they could do it after he lost to Dimi at the O2. But also agree with all the comments about how strong the French team are. Back to agreeing with you RB (;)) about wishing it had been lovely Jo instead of up himself Pouille (although I do like his game). Herbert's sheer exuberant joy was infectious i must say and I am pleased for them.
I was able to catch quite a bit of the singles on Friday and all of the doubles on Saturday. As much as I wanted a bin for Belgium seeing the joy on Herbert after the doubles win, I couldn't hold a grudge. That moment between him and mahout who waited to be the last one to congratulate him was just lovely. I didn't think Belgium could win the tie after that, I was confident goff could but not darcis. I didn't see any of the singles on Sunday as becky and Philip had their g force open competition, Philips first ever and becky with another gold and a trophy. I got home in time to see the end of the 5th rubber, France were up two sets and about 4 games so it really was the end. Poor goff. Hopefully he'll bounce back ok from this and have a great season next year. It would be nice to see more of JWT too, maybe this win will give him a bump next year.
