Can't wait!
I have posted this on the general thread too but I will add it here Simon had withdrawn from this event citing personal reasons it was a week ago so another has made the draw in his place. https://www.facebook.com/BNPPARIBASOPEN/posts/10155061873383792:0

I posted on another thread #35 -2 still equals not a seed, draw is at 11pm tomorrow, still time for another withdrawal
MD 96 Qual 48 (no Aljaz) 32 seeds, starts Thursday, Qual Tuesday
There is a twitter rumour from a Canadian journalist that Raonic is going to withdraw from Indian Wells which could have significance for Andy's draw. I think this means Del Potro becomes the 32nd seed and pushes Querry out of being a possible 3rd round match, Dimitrov(replaced by RBA) out of a possible 4th round and Nishikori(replaced by Thiem) out of a possible QF match.
Watch now as Raonic doesn't pull out and Andy draws Delpo, Querrey, Dimitrov & Nishikori. ;)
roytennisfan

Couldn't Andy get Roger instead of Nishikori in QF, think that would be tougher than Kei .........DelPo, Querrey, Dmitrov, Federer, Nadal, Djokovich ???
I'm just going on seeding and Andy would be drawn against a 5-8 seed in the QF but Federer as seed 9/10 would be drawn against one of those seeds in the 4th and he would be favourite to win whomever it is. Of course draws never go according to seeding as we know but it's always fun projecting and speculating. ;)

Spot on Bardot  Milos has withdrawn, DelPo now a seed etc, our possible draws are just fantasy....like they always were
Edit: With 600 points dropping for his final last year, Raonic will drop to at least #5
roytennisfan
07-03-2017, 09:31
5 more lower ranked players (highest Baghdatis) have also withdrawn so 8 alternatives are in
With Raonic's withdrawal, these are the 32 seeds. Andy will be drawn to meet one in the orange box in round 3 (arguably tougher than the 17-24 seeds above) and one in the yellow box in round 4(anyone but Nick ;)). There is also the possibility of a 4th round between Nadal & Federer
http://i67.tinypic.com/2e4vxbc.png
Granollers is the highest ranked unseeded player.

According to French journo, Simon is not injured, just taking it as the one he can sit out
roytennisfan
07-03-2017, 09:51
Not much to worry about left in r2 then, could still get Granollers, DelPo, Nick, Roger, Rafa and Nole. Think at one all recently, DelPo needs an early r3 rematch with Nole :boogie:
Happy 57th birthday to Ivan. I wonder if he got any cards from Jamie (Delgado) and Sir Andy.

I hope Andy gets Kohli in R3 - their matches are always unbelievable - much needed excitement for this dull as ditch-water tournament (don't blame Andy for hating it, though confident he will focus and do well this year for the sake of his ranking).
@ RosieBear - I don't - I don't think my blood pressure will survive another match like that. I also think Kohlscreiber deserves a break from AM........!!!!
Prospective QFs:
Murray v Tsonga
Wawrinka v Thiem
Cilic v Nishikori
Nadal v Djokovic
R1: Bye
R2: Lu/Qualifier
R3: Lopez :phew:
R4: Bautista Agut
QF: Tsonga
SF: Wawrinka
F: Djokovic
Federer v Nadal in the 4th round and they're in Djokovic's quarter which is brutal with a possible 4th round against Kyrgios.
Brit 1st rounds.
Evo v Brown
Kyle v Elias with the winner playing Djokovic in the second round.
A delay whilst they draw the bottom 16 seeds, will Andy get Delpo?
Poor Novak, he's drawn Delpo in the 3rd round. ;) His draw:
R1: Bye
R2: Edmund/Elias
R3: Del Potro
R4: Kyrgios
QF: Federer/Nadal
SF: Nishikori
F: Andy
Correction, it was Gasquet who withdrew due to illness and hence Granollers became the 32nd seed.

But it is a bit funny....
I wouldn't even hazard a guess as to who will come through from Djoko's quarter. A pretty good draw for Andy though.

If he gets that far,to the semi, Novak could be facing an in-form Sam who is in Kei's quarter, that would be much tougher me thinks
The top half play on Thursday and the bottom half on Friday so Andy's first match will be on Saturday or very early Sunday morning as we like to call it here. ;)
The only improvement to Andy's draw would have been if it was anywhere but Indian Wells. ;) He was even hating on the place when he was in Dubai saying it was the complete opposite with its fast balls and slow courts. Andy did make the SF here in 2015 with a good draw only dropping a set to Kohli on the way. It wouldn't be a surprise if Tiafoe reached the 3rd round as Lopez is not in great form and Tiafoe did take Del Potro to a third set TB last week in Acapulco.
I hope Andy gets Kohli in R3 - their matches are always unbelievable - much needed excitement for this dull as ditch-water tournament (don't blame Andy for hating it, though confident he will focus and do well this year for the sake of his ranking).
Just curious as to why you find IW dull? I have always enjoyed it ... maybe because it's the first masters of the season. The time difference is a pain admittedly, when we have to work :grrr:
That quarter of death should bring some excitement to proceedings that's for sure :faint:
I have always thought IW was devoid of atmoshere (almost as bad as queens) it can't be good for the pensioners to get to excited in the dessert heat

I enjoy Indian Wells too. As Caro said above, maybe it is because it is the first Masters Event of the season and normally the first tournament after AO where all the big names play.
I think it's a cunning plan to nobble AM. They tried giving him the draw from hell at the WTF last year, which backfired spectacularly, so now they are trying a bit of reverse psychology:-)

All it shows is that Novak and Andy have played in an era where the top 4 has been so dominant it's been virtually impossible to avoid playing them during tournaments. Federer meanwhile played in a weak and inconsistent era for the first part of his career till Rafa turned up.
But we really should #PrayforNole in the meantime.

I saw a statistic somewhere showing that in just about every slam Federer had his first round against a qualifier and Rafa did pretty well too.
However, this is the draw, looking good for Andy and pretty bad for Novak. But strange things happen as we all know.
Just keep remembering Andy has 45 points at stake whereas the best Novak can do is reach the 1000 he won last year or he could lose the lot
Don't let anyone complain about Andy's draw ever again

The only tiny fly which could be in Andy's draw ointment is if Basilashvili who's the top seed in qualifying is placed in the draw to play Lu. His ranking has risen rapidly to 55 thanks to reaching the finals of Sofia & Memphis in February but was 92 at the cutoff date for entries.

Go Andy :cheer: Haha! Yep, I do have to agree about the crowd. A lot of the American tournaments are the same with empty stadiums all the way till the final weekend. So yes, it does often lack atmosphere that's true.

Well that explains Andy's poor success there: Arrives pumped up (Botox) Running his *** off to within an inch of his life, in zero atmosphere then lays dying in a morgue covered in dust.

"Amazing, amazing draw." "I've never seen anything like it" "one of the toughest sections of a draw of all time."

Pospisil was the next worst option. ;) He said in an interview after yesterday's match that he was struggling with his back (not his knee) in the third set and felt it stiffening up. It's a problem he's had since the San Fransisco challenger after DC. He was hoping for a day off before playing Lu whom he is 3-0 but the match is on today's schedule.

Sky commies have said that Andy will play on Saturday.
Does that mean early hours of Sat our time or US Sat I wonder?
Shame to see Robredo getting battered.
He is a bit less battered in set 2 - a break up. I remember him on Mr M's comeback another traumatic tiebreak, that Houdini managed to wriggle out of. It was the one where Robredo called him illegitimate and gave him the finger at the net.

I will watch Kyle but the others are a bit late for me tonight, but if it was Andy playing Popsi ......
I'm not seeing Jamie and Bruno on the listings, but maybe that is just my eyesight ;)
Pospisil will be Andy's second round opponent after he beat Lu in three sets taking 2:30 to do so. His third match in 3 days so going to be fully accustomed to conditions and possibly a little tired. Apparently it will be the night match on Saturday which is probably why Andy practised from 6-8pm last night including a practice set against Albert Ramos Vinolas which I assume Andy won given ARV served a DF and then they shook hands. At the end of practice Andy went over and signed autographs & took selfies with the large crowd watching unlike Federer who just gave a royal wave to his adoring fans as he left practice. ;)
So much for hyping Basilashvili who lost in straight sets to qualifier Darian King from Barbados.
I'm not seeing Jamie and Bruno on the listings, but maybe that is just my eyesight ;)
They're 4 seeds, scheduled for 7 pm on Saturday our time. Most thoughtful:-)

I suspect the doubles is more about getting Andy some match practice before his singles and earning Dan a bit of extra cash at the same time. Doubt Andy is bothered about playing more than one round.
As expected, it's a 7pm start for Andy and 3am for us. :sleepy:

All the talk of the group off death, Kyle and dan will walk it and meet in the semis :) Kyle for the place in the final though (sorry Caro and dan), Andy for the title.
Andy had a two hour practice session earlier which was tougher than Dan's match. ;) It included a practice set with Konstantin Kravchuk who lost to Fognini yesterday having lead 6-0 4-1. He's certainly not the first that's happened to. Andy ended practice with another 10 minute selfie and signing session with fans.
Whilst waiting for Andy & Dan's match I may have watched the worst TB in the history of tennis. The first 10 points all went against serve and included 4 DFs from Young and 2 from Kozlov! At 5-5, Young eventually won a point on his serve but Kozlov didn't and Young won 7-5.

Whilst I agree with that now, remember Kyle won easily in straight sets in the Dallas ch final last year, I remember watching it on livestream
Dan's a different player this year. Finally matured and got his act together. So thrilled to see Andy choosing to play doubles with him because for a long while I had the feeling that whilst Andy thought Dan had talent, he was dismayed at his (lack of) work ethic and so didn't really have time for him. I'd love to see him invited to the Miami training block this winter.

If anything demonstrates the gulf between those at top of the game and those scraping along it's Darian King having to repair his shoes which had split with plasters as he didn't have another pair. He's almost 25 and been a pro for 7 years and earned $188K. He receives $22,325 for reaching the second the second round which will easily be his biggest ever pay day but the prize money at Challengers should be increased.

Watched Federer destroy poor Stephane Robert, the guy is back to his best so I have him as slight favourite for the IW title :-).
Also, a good win for Jack Sock over Henri Laaksonen despite a second set bagel, Steve Johnson who beat Kevin Anderson in a final set breaker and Taylor Fritz who caused the biggest shock of the day, beating Marin Cilic 4-6; 7-5; 6-4.
Alex Zverev v Nick Kyrgios and Juan Martin Del Potro v Novak Djokovic are the matches to watch on Tuesday :).
JAMES4578
13-03-2017, 09:53
Whilst surprise Cilic out Taylor Fritz often mentioned as one to look out for, very easy for Fed and was also pretty routine for Nadal earlier.
The Indian Wells draw is trolling Andy now that he's out. Bautista Agut who was his scheduled 4th round opponent has withdrawn and Carreno Busta receives a walkover into the 4th round. What might have been. :crying: ;)

That's life I am afraid.
Goffin is the only top 20 player left in the first quarter compared with 5 in the fourth quarter and Del Potro.
Remarkable result. Nishioka (#70) was a set and 1-5 down to Berdych (who twice served for the match and had a MP) has beaten him 1-6 7-6(5) 6-4. One for the little guys, Nishioka is 5ft 7in tall. Another seed disappears from the top half. Berdych look shell-shocked at the end.
Well that's Popsy out.....his play was nowhere near as good! 7-6, 3-6, 5-7
Another shock result. Lajovic has just beaten the S&V king, Pospisil 6-7(4) 6-3 7-5. Pospisil served for the match at 5-3 in third and was broken to love and had a MP on Lajovic's serve in the next game. He lost 4 consecutive games. Lajovic v Carreno Busta for a place in the QF.
Exactly Bardot.....serving for the match!!!!!!!!....I was hoping he would get the win
Monfils up a set & a break, 3-2 the second set
Monfils gets the win 6-2, 6-4

Wasn't surprised Popsi went out yesterday. A big win for an outsider is often followed by a loss. Berdych should have won though; he must be very low on confidence at present.
JAMES4578
14-03-2017, 14:11
A let down always possible but thought Popsi might win that one and was up 5-3 in 3rd, a bit of a collapse from Berdych as he was up 6-1, 5-2 though Nishioka took his chance. Thiem looked good against Micha Zverev even if not biggest challenge, Kohli couldn't really extend Wawrinka after 1st.

No me neither! I was out last night so missed all the tennis. I was looking for this match on tennis tv replays before knowing the result and it's not on there. Checked results wondering if that meant it was a w/o .... nope, just not a replay. Now I know Novak won I'm not so bothered but weird all the same

Haven't seen any of it yet but from stats Djokovic seemingly in form, whilst went to decider was easy 3rd. Pity Dimitrov lost to sock in the end, Fed through to play Nadal after 2 breakers. The Kygrios/Zverev match was a bit of a disappointment, Nick was playing well but Alex couldn't find enough consistency-still some good points though.

That's what I mean when I say the 'new' Tennis TV isn't as user friendly as it used to be. It's sometimes difficult to locate what you are looking for. I've been duped into thinking that what I was looking for wasn't there when in fact it was there all along hiding under another heading!!

I was following the live scores for the second and third sets. It was a bit cat and mouse in the second with several breaks on either side but then Djoko broke at the beginning of the third and ran away with it.
With this loss, Del Potro remains at #35 and will require withdrawals to be seeded in Miami with Raonic, Simon & Ferrer likely to return and only Gasquet confirmed as out. Maybe a tough first match against Delpo is what Andy needs or could it happen again to Djokovic? ;)
Poor delpo. I was looking forward to this match but it wasn't as good as I had anticipated. Well the last set wasn't at least. As much as I like delpo I wanted to see a match between Raffa and djoko so I wanted djoko to get that win.
Now hoping for a win for goff though it doesn't look good

Take note Andy, the best way to prepare for Indian Wells is to head for South America and only play on clay after the Australian Open. ;) Both Cuevas & Carreno Busta have played 3 clay tournaments with Cuevas winning Sao Paulo beating Carreno Busta on the way. A surprising QF to say the least.

Brutally good already. Nick breaks in first game.
I guess you'd expect to be later as you have a short turn around form being second to last on the day before. But if you are going to win you have to overcome these things. No one said it should be easy. Anyway I picked a side so this is probably the beginning of the end for djoko

Got to love Nick's self-belief - refuses to play anyone's reputation - tbh feel that will make it harder for Novak today than the heat.
I believe the only thing in Nicks belief that may get in the way could be him wanting to prove
(a little to much) that the last time wasn't a one off.
Is Dumusois making that shocking overrule to deliberately provoke Nick?
I hope there's something Andy can learn from watching Nick serve, maybe just taking less time. ;)

Awesome display from Nick for 2nd consecutive dismantling of Noble, certainly quite a few exciting points! Kygrios impresssed not just with the serve but stickability in rallies and some variety with changes of pace. Mind you Djokovic had half chances in 2nd and couldn't capitalise, had it tough but would seem confidence still not at highest level. Meanwhile Fed in great form as he dispatches Nadal 6-2,6-3 in just 67 minutes,Rafa disappointing though and certainly failed to live up to the billing!

Rafa bit below par but Fed was awesome from the start and breaks new ground by getting 3rd consecutive win over Rafa. Historically Fed has struggled against Rafa but Fed's game has evolved so much recently. Tennis goes in cycles and super-attacking players are getting the results.

From an interview with Federer & Annacone on Tennis Channel.
Tennis Inside Out @TennisInsideOut
Rog talking about NK's results, "He beat Nole, myself...Rafa...did he beat Andy?" Paul: "In an exo." Rog: "Pfftht. That doesn't count."
Fed knows and we should remember this when it comes to his exho in Zurich but not the one in Glasgow. :p ;)
The Kyrgios/Fed match will be extremely interesting. I'm just watching the replay of the Fed/Nadal match and, although I would say Rafa was definitely below par, Fed played that first set brilliantly - wonderfully controlled aggression. I have never liked the man but I have to admire his ability to constantly reinvent his game. If Fed plays as he did against Rafa and Nick manages to beat him I will take my hat off to him - it will be a major breakthrough for the younger generation IMO.
Speaking of Federer, Evgeny Donskoy says Hi! :p;) Since beating Fed he's gone 7-1 having won the Zhuhai challenger and is in the QF of Shenzhen this week.
Interesting ............... perhaps one of the most magnanimous interviews I've heard from Fed. He was saying that he thought there was something not quite right with Rafa - that he wasn't as quick about the court as usual and allowed him to step in more. He was also very complimentary about Nick.

I'm looking forward to the Fed /Kyrgios clash already. Neither of them hold back. Love, love, love it. If tennis is going in direction of this aggressive style - not the wham bam of the 90s but players who aren't afraid to take it on -then I'm very happy. People might view Andy as more defensive, but his attacking skills are immense, grass wouldn't be his most successful surface otherwise, so hopefully we'll get to see more of it as the game evolves.

Mine too.
There are certain sportspeople that are so unbelievably exquisite in the execution of their sport, they transcend it. For example, I have no interest in athletics but there is a Kenyan runner called David Rudisha who mesmerises me. He is like art. In diving, again no real interest, but there's this Chinese guy called Qui Bo, just can't take my eyes off him. I couldn't begin to explain what sets them apart in technical terms, it's just a case of know it when I see it. For me, Fed is in this category for tennis - his personality is neither here nor there - he's just divinely good to watch.
If a bit of fawning is the price to pay for having sportspeople such as these, I can live with it.
As for tonight's match, don't mind who wins - just want it to live up to expectations.

Quotes from Federer's press conference.
"Don't know my clay schedule, will decide after Miami, will not be based on ranking"
"I promised myself I won't play a tourno if I'm not excited to be there"
"Won't play a lot this year, so to have a shot at n.1 I would need another Slam title"
"100 tournaments is not a goal right now, but that could change. Ask me again in six months"
I definitely think Fed has his eye on Wimbledon.
A more complete quote from Federer. Sounding very cautious.

"Doing people a favour"......sooooo Fed

Rog's surprise at Andy missing Miami is because he's worried about his exho for Africa.
Josephine
19-03-2017, 00:12
Well it would be a shame if he missed the exho - and then Fed did not come to Glasgow.
He is going to go for No 1 again, mark my words.
Absolutely fair play to Fed I say. I have never been a Fed fan but I have to say I have a LOT of admiration for what he is achieving again so late in his career. Yes, he's smug but come on, how can he fail to recognise how popular he is?! It's in his face every time he takes to the court! I actually think he gives a good interview. I would still support most other players against him but I now understand that he is a special player like it / him or not ...
My feeling with Fed is it's just getting boring now. It's time for a change in the old guard. So many times we have talked about him reaching the end of the road, and then he pops up again. He is 36 this year. I just sometimes have this depressing feeling that we will be having this conversation about Fed, long after AM, Nadal and Djokovic have retired. At some point "Old Father Time" will have to catch up with him, but goodness knows when.
Unless he has discovered the secret of eternal youth, or more probably his fans have cloned him?
No, I'm sorry but as a tennis fan you seriously cannot describe Fed's tennis as boring! He was winning ALL the time at one point and that did get boring as it did with Nole, but that is not the case now. What Fed is doing deserves credit whether you like him or not.

Totally agree Caro, Fed can't help the way the media fawn all over him and his tennis is outstanding, so glad to have had the chance to see him live on several occasions (it's even easier to appreciate live). He also helped the rise in global interest in tennis, it was on the wane fir a while but the Fedal rivalry reignited it and must surely have played a part in the many sponsorship and tv deals tennis had just now.

Well, it's all very well calling for a change in the old guard but the new guard have got to step up and this is something they have failed to do on any consistent level. Judging by the increasing number of over 30s still playing Roger isn't the only one still enjoying his tennis. If he is still enjoying the challenge of reinventing his game, putting in the hard work and winning matches, then why not? An old cliche but true - you can only beat the person on the other side of the net. I've always been a great fan of the way Roger plays; I think it's a joy to watch. I was at the AO final and yes, it was a great occasion. But really, it shouldn't have happened. The rest of the ATP Tour need to step up to the plate. But you can't condemn the old guard for taking advantage.

Absolutely agree with Caro, Westie and Fah. I just don't get the indignation/surprise that Fed will be out to challenge for the number 1 spot. I mean how very dare he, anyone would think this is competitive sport we're talking about. He's just won the Aus, is playing lights out tennis, some say the best of his life, but he's meant to say 'oh no, of course I don't want x,y,z - I'm 36, I've had my day, I'll leave it for the newbies'. Get out of here! :rolling:
Most of the talk of his retiral has been wishful thinking. Roger is the only person who has never really talked about it.
No, I'm sorry but as a tennis fan you seriously cannot describe Fed's tennis as boring! He was winning ALL the time at one point and that did get boring as it did with Nole, but that is not the case now. What Fed is doing deserves credit whether you like him or not.
I find Fed boring, not his tennis. I watched the match yesterday and his expression didn't change throughout it. I don't think he is a particularly pleasant person. My interest in tennis is the personalities rather than the game it's self. Perhaps that's just me. I have never warmed to Fed, and personally will be glad when he finally does retire.
Although I don't like the man, I am actually really glad to see Fed still playing great tennis and re-inventing his game at the ripe old age of 36. Hopefully, it means that we may have the pleasure of watching Andy for five or six more years! :knight: I wouldn't be too upset if Fed took the clay season off to concentrate on Wimbledon though. ;)
I may not be a big fed fan off court, though you can't deny his skills and achievements on it, but I have to say I think it's great for a player to say yeah I want this! I'm going to go for it. It's amazing that after so long a career and so many wins he still has that hunger. Maybe it's that hunger that is seeing him playing some of the best tennis of his life. Without that hunger we get the flat error and frustration ridden tennis we've seen from djoko a lot lately. Sometimes it seems like he just doesn't want to be there. That is the real shame, someone who can't seem to find the love for their passion again. It's bad for the game. I want to see confidence in these players, to make them find the attacking lights out tennis that is so enjoyable to watch. One player upping their game and bringing a challenge to the others sees everyone look to play better. That makes for better matches and better tournaments.
I really don't know who I want to win the final. I keep changing my mind. As any winner I have picked has lost then it really makes no difference what I say here. I probably won't know until the match is over. Either way I hope it is a great one.

Can't quite make my mind up on kygrios, mostly I think I like him but then some of his behaviour is so inexcusable. However what I am certain of is I like his presence on the tour, it gets folk talking about tennis, watching it and as RosieB says we need all types of personality to make the tour interesting, that's why Connors-McEnroe-Borg, Lendl-Becker-Edberg, Sampras-Agassi all worked as rivalries, they were so different, all great in their own ways.

I think he is often a prat, but that's a feature of most youngsters. I do however think that there is a good guy underneath the teenage angst. I feel a bit sorry for him. I think he was pushed into tennis against his will. He is like Murray prone to foot in mouth episodes, but there is no side to him. What you see is what you get. I personally like that.
