View Full Version : MONTE CARLO 2017 - 16-23 April - main thread
Entry list for Montecarlo is online. Entry deadline was 20th march but it doesn't currently include federer (no surprise there) but I am surprised that delpo is not entered. I wonder if he is planning on playing Huston or is just taking the time off to avoid injury. https://mobile.twitter.com/MichalSamulski/status/844263929522065413/photo/1
It's great to see three Brits on the list. As you say, JerryD, no surprise that Fed's name isn't there.
Tournie director is still hoping federer and nishikori will play http://tennischannel.com/news/more-stories/federer-nishikori-not-part-of-the-monte-carlo-field

This could be the weakest Masters 1000 ever. Andy seemingly a certain non starter, Novak a big doubt, Federer no, Raonic doubtful, Nishikori no. I wonder if Federer might have a rethink given there's a chance for some easy points here. The number 1 ranking is starting to look very attainable by the end of the year......I guess the question is, can his body hold up to playing on clay now?
I wonder what Nishikori has against Monte Carlo. He's only played there once (2012) in his career yet always plays Barcelona the week before. Maybe it's a tax(dodging) protest. ;)

He is down for Madrid, so you never know if he will decide to go for it
According to the sports reporter, on radio five live last night, Sir Andy will be there. I wonder if the reporter is some kind of doctor or knows something that nobody else does.
As Novak is down for the DC and MC is close to home I'd be surprised if he didn't play.

You and me both
Bit of a rumour mill but one of the murraynators bumped into willie Murray in Sainsbury's and when asked he told her Andy is healing well and should be ready for the start of the clay. That suggests he is set to return at MC and not Madrid as some papers suggested

This will be true. I know Cathie & Ian Gunn..they know the Murrays well & live in Dunblane. Great news !
Didn't want to get in trouble for misleading folk if it wasn't because I don't know them, but that's great thanks ange :)

Someone has posted a picture on facebook of Andy practising with Jamie Delgado. Hopefully this is a good sign he will play in Monte Carlo.
I posted the update on the news section. It was in the nail I think. He has been hitting at wimbie with Jamie and his physio. Expected to travel to Monte Carlo soon
Andy just said in his Match for Africa interview that he expects to be playing in Monte Carlo if his elbow injury goes well.
Kyrgios has withdrawn from Monte Carlo and is replaced by Delbonis.

A pity, Nick needs some games on clay with an away DC semi tie in Belgium
Yesterday Novak shared a picture of him and troicki practicing in Monte Carlo and today Jamie Delgado put one up of the court. Jamie's presence must mean Andy is there. Hopefully both Andy and Novak can have a good week and are both recovering well :)

So long as it's Andy doing a bit better than Novak
Exactly Roy. Meet in the final and a win for Andy would be ace :) also keep me busy with tennis for a week
Let's hope Andy does A LOT better than Djokovic. That number 1 ranking doesn't maintain itself. :p
Raonic and Gasquet have withdrawn and are replaced by Robredo and Basilashvili.
Neither are a suprise for I feel so bad for raonic it has been a tough year for him with injuries, a really bad way to follow up reaching a career high. Poor guy.

When is the draw being done?
The draw is scheduled for 5.30pm UK today. Is it safe to assume Andy is playing given the draw is so close?
Ferrer has withdrawn and replaced by Medvedev.
Lol beat me to it Bardot. He was practicing with goffin yesterday too :)
Poor ferrer this year really isn't going well for him
Andy's prospective route.

Dan vs Kyle! What are the chances!
I know! I will spend the match switching sides lol x
Well, one thing's certain, at least one of them will get through to the second round!
Well, Andy is in the right half of the draw, with Rafa, Djoko and various other threats in the other half.
If Andy had withdrawn, Muller would have been seeded meaning Kohlschreiber is the next highest ranked unseeded player.
In Marrakech, Paire has just beaten Robredo and plays Kohli in the SF. These 3 could be Andy's opponents in the first 3 rounds in MC.

I remember him wearing similar in Canada a few years ago, I'm sure it's just a post practice precaution and nothing to be alarmed over. He couldn't have had it on for long as in most of the pics/ tv shots of him watching the match he didn't have it on.

I only switched on the Dan & Kyle match at 2-1 in the first set and Andy wasn't wearing the icepack then so don't think he kept it on long. I expect it is precautionary
Glad it has been confirmed that Andy had something on his elbow at least part of the time as I was beginning to think I needed a trip to SpecSavers!
Glad to see a. Zverev, Berdy and swartzman got wins today :)
No prospect of another nail biter with Kohlschreiber as he's withdrawn and is replaced by PH Herbert. Also out is Delbonis replaced by Dzumhur.

Andy will play Muller tomorrow after he cruised through against Robredo.
And it's Muller for Andy tomorrow! Muller served well today but Robredo didn't really turn up!
Impressive from Muller as he comfortably beat Robredo 6-2 6-2 on what is his least favourite surface. He only dropped two points on his first serve.

Think Almagro has given up
Think he has! No fight today!
You guys know what I'm going to say, and I certainly don't mind being the odd one out...I do love Simon (who wouldn't ;) I may or may not have a no of photos of him in Rouen even though he wasn't playing ;) ) lol ...but... I was hoping for djoko in this one. I'm still looking for and upping in his game and the same for Murray, for a nail biting fantastic final between 1 & 2 where each plays their best and so Murray takes it. Now, I know we aren't there yet, but we won't get there if djoko keeps choking. This match was good and entertaining though once djoko dropped that second set I exoected him to lose. He was still making a lot of errors. Recently he has been losing matches like that. When he got behind again in third I really thought he was done for. I'm glad he is getting back to a point where he can come back to win matches like that.
Even if his celebration gesture bugs people. Many of the celebrations are forced and contrived, none of them sit well with me unless they seem unrehearsed. It is a commercial side of tennis that I'm not a fan of.
Now I just need a win for goff :)

I'm sure it won't bother Andy but it annoys me that he is up first on the main court tomorrow before Stan, Rafa and Djoko. I appreciate that they are all former champions here but he is the world number one!
Third straight tournament in which Dimitrov has lost his first match. He was 16-1 through January and the beginning of February and 3-5 since.
Dimi really seems to have lost his way.
Saw a bit of the third set, it wasn't looking good for him. I hope he finds his way again soon

I understand Raffa's match being more of a highlight. It could be a great one. The old vs the new and all that. Djoko I sort of get because it's on his doorstep so maybe he's a favourite, though match doesn't look like a showstopper. Then I guess if that leaves Stan and Andy, then Stan was on first today. It's all decided to get the most viewers both there and on tv. As you said though, Andy won't mind either way, there's not a chance of late matches and with a risk of rain, it's better to be first up :)

Wawrinka loses 6-4 6-4 to Cuevas, at least Andy won a set from his Spanish speaking opponent. :p Top half of the draw opens up with Cilic the highest seed remaining.
Stan not having a good time in MC either! He has just lost to Cuevas in straight sets!
Stan is neither injured nor has he been ill twice this year

Glad I didn't see Rafa savage young blondie tbh (yes, does put Kyle's effort into context). I'm not averse to a power game, Stan is one of my faves, but I'm a softy and can't bear to see a mismatch - feels like watching an unfair fight. Rafa/Nole would be fun though, so will hope for that.
Djoko is struggling at the moment. From being a set and a break up, he's just lost the second set and looks very out of sorts.
That's good. We don't want him gaining too many points.

I think Sascha was still suffering from losing that easy match point against Rafa in Indian Wells. His head was all over the place.
Djoko milking the crowd again ............. why does he do that? It's almost as nauseating as his love in when he wins.
I guess it makes him feel more energised and confident and that makes it more likely he will win. Why do some players first pump their smallest of points or cheer their opponent's errors. It's just about finding a way into the match. Most players play up to the crowd in one way or another. I don't find his ways any more annoying that others. Insulting the crowd to find a way into the match is worse. But some players get more energy from the crowd's boos so do that instead.
You're much more charitable than I am, JerryD!
I have just said a very rude word. It's Djokovic's now:-(
I cheered myself on while scrubbing the walls last night. I cheer myself on when I run through pain in my knees. We all have little ways of trying to make something that is hard, stressful or making us unhappy, easier. Some of my ways are ridiculous, no doubt anyone seeing me shaking my fist at myself during my last 10km probably thought look at this fool. What is she doing. So I can empathise.
Why do the left time violations go on and on and then bring it up on the biggest points? Either deal with it or don't
Hang on .......... Carreno-Busta has just broken back ............ never say never!!

Yea - Carreno-Busta has just broken back from 15:40. Now hold.

Maybe time for Pouille to step up, very impressive in Rouen, was surprised how good his serve was and his variations in play and was very consistent winning against anything short, slow or uppish.
ARV currently a set all v Cilic ... but a break down in the 3rd.
ARV leading 5-3 in the TB, lost the next 4 points and the set. Cilic so lucky with the volley on SP which just clipped the outside of the baseline. Cilic breaks in the first game of the 3rd set.
Lol! from leading 2-0, Cilic lost the next 6 games and the match. :big grin: Is that worse than Andy? :p Well done ARV. :shades:
I would say so as Colic is not returning from injury and sickness

Well done Ramos Vinolas. I was delighted to see him follow up his win yesterday by beating Cilic today. With Andy out it would be nice to see someone new take the title. I'd like to see Goffin win but, if not him, I'd be quite happy with RV or Pouille.

The "Pointless Goff" meme is dead, long live Goff. How crazy have the 3 Djokovic matches been? Each one down to the wire. Difficult to know what state his game is in as he did play some great tennis.

Fantastic by Goffin, so pleased for him. Don't suppose he stands a chance if Rafa gets through, but it will give him a lot of self belief.
That was amazing! That neat little package from Belgium can sure pack a punch! I only managed to see the 3rd set but it was scintillating. Such amazing ball striking! And it was so good to see/hear so many Goffin supporters in the crowd. What about the lady with the red Federer jumper....she was ecstatic for David!! (She is forgiven!). Simply a wonderful tennis match!
We were all that scary Fed fan. :big grin:

Well done Goffin! And now, vamos Rafa!
wow , that was a great match to watch
so happy for Goffin !!! Hes getting better & better !!
Ah great news - have been rather preoccupied with all sorts of things this afternoon and only just catching up with tennis news!
Goffin hasn't played Nadal before and still may not but his H2H against the rest of the big 4 is, 0-5 vs Andy, 0-5 vs Federer and 1-5 vs Djokovic.

I wonder if Nole will request a Wild Card into Barcelona ...
What? Wee Diego breaks Nadal to love in the first game. Tennis.....

Great win for Goffin and dramatic final game, looked like earlier Djokovic had turned it around so give a lot of credit and Nole didn't get to him! Good that Ramos Vinolas followed up the big win ,though of course wish he hadn't got it in the first place and happy Pouille got through tough one too!

So annoyed I was really enjoying that match when I had to paused it at 5-5 to answer a stupid phone call. Pressed pauses and waited for the annoying accounts convo to be over. Got off the phone pressed play 6-5 15-15 and they say they are moving channel. I turn over but of course I'm over half an hour behind so am confronted by nadal! Had to go to the app to see the result!
Bloody work always gets in the way. Seems I missed the last game and it was a really exciting one. As much as I was hoping for a djoko v nadal semi, I hadn't given much thought to goff. When he lost the second set I realised I wanted him to win. He played so well, he really deserved it. So I was invested and then missed the moment when he took it!!
Huge congrats to him despite my moaning. I'll look for highlights or something. I just hope he can back this great win up with another one tomorrow and take the title on Sunday :) :)
I had to leave halfway through the last set so I've just seen the result. Wahey !!!! So pleased for Goff - I'm looking forward to seeing the recording of the bit I missed.

Schwartzmann breaks for 3-2 in the 2nd set; Rafa took the first set 6-4
Did Peter Fleming really just say, 'I know where the drugs' testers are going immediately after this match'! Is this because someone dares to go toe to toe with Nadal on clay? I wound it back and, yes, he did say that. I like Fleming but that is shocking!
Fabulous match :) Raffa was very good, as was schwarztman. Though it was straight sets it was much closer than the score suggests. Really late to be finishing too as the sky around there is completely black. Wanted this win for nadal but hoping for goff tomorrow :)
Raffa 6-4 6-4
I was rooting for Schwarztman and an all new line up in the semis but Rafa played well to win in straights. Well done to Schwarzman too though - I've never seen him play before and he certainly made an impression.
Saw bits of the Goffin/Nole match but not the end. There was some great tennis. Glad David got the W. The more the points are spread around whilst Andy is recovering, the better IMHO.

The Goffin Djokovic match was very good. David was on fire! Glad he didn't play like that in the DC final - I don't think my nerves could have coped.

Managed to see most of Goffin and Djokovic and glad I did, it was a thriller. My vocal support was almost on a par with my support for Andy. Only saw bits of Nadal as had to get ready as MurrayAOne and another friend coming for the evening.

So pleased for David but what he left in the tank for today.

Don't think it matters much. I will be cheering him on, but he has got over a ginormous hurdle. We needed that.
Well deserved win for Vino!!!......COME ON GOFFIN!!!

Great win for Ramos-Vinolas who is having amazing tournament, well done! If Andy goes out early prefer his conquerors to win a few more matches (makes it more bearable) though doesn't often happen.
Who would have thought Vino would have made it to the final!! His play reminds me of Ferrer....he is just everywhere and gets so many balls back. I suppose he can do that well on clay...I wonder about grass?
I'm amazed that Nadal and Goffin have never played one another before. I'm really looking forward to this match.
Well done to vino. New career high for him on Monday regardless of the final result. Really looking forward to goffin v nadal but I'll have to record it until later :)

C'mon Goff :cheer:
The crowd know that Goff was cheated so may turn on the moonballer. :p
"We don't change someone for one call" says the tournament referee.
Booing Nadal on return from his lengthy break. :big grin: Love this crowd. :shades:
ugggg , cmon Goffin , let it go and get the 2nd set
That's a damned shame - c'mon Goff!
Class, the serve Goff conceded to Nadal.

and classless. :grrr:

Very classy of Goffin and it also makes a point. Of course, it was the umpire's mistake but I cannot believe that Rafa didn't know that ball was out. Yes, Goff should put it behind him but the umpire has ruined this match. Nadal may well have gone on to win anyway but it would have been a very different match without that incident.
Surely, after this, they have to rethink the use of Hawkeye on clay?
Mourier could have just asked the linesperson where the mark was.

Umpire definitely in the wrong and clearly it has affected Goffin (even if some players would have reacted in different way), in all likelihood though Nadal was going through to the final. Clearly some of the crowd found David more appealing nonetheless.
Clearly Goff couldn't put it behind and fully understandable why not. Remember saying similar about Andy and the "over the net" incident but this was on a different level.
What a sad way to finish, clearly Goffin was robbed of the point, as you all say Hawkeye is certainly needed, gutted for Goffin!!

:sad::sad: Absolutely gutted for Goffin - I know that he should not have let it get to him, but he's a very sweet boy with a gentle temperament and if the shoe had been on the other foot would have conceded the point, because as has already been pointed out on here players always know which mark is the one to check, and Goff is pure class. It would have been upsetting to him not to receive what he would have offered his opponent if it had been the other way round.
Very bad luck Goff, but I remain hopeful that he will get a masters soon.
Everything's better with Hawkeye.
Also a tough ask to beat Djok then Rafa in back to back matches. Think Goff has made many new friends. Where is he due to play next?
Goffin had just won the biggest match of his career, was full of confidence, playing his best ever tennis and had the momentum and the crowd with him and was a break up against Nadal (who is not the Nadal of old). A hold there and I believe he would have gone on to win.
Tainted tournament now after Mourier's inexcusable error. Stopped watching at that point as it was all so predictable.

I won't be backing nadal in the final-all he needed to do was to concede the point and the the match wouldn't have been ruined. And I'm usually a Rafa fan. Mourier should be suspended:grrr:
Mourier has previous. He called this let serve in.

I understand where folks are coming from regarding Rafa, but we don't really know what Rafa was doing at the time, Annabel said that he was getting his towels, so it clearly is down to a bad umpire who had no reason at all to get off his chair to check, Rafa didn't ask him to so why do it, and this umpire clearly hasn't got a good track record, and as much as I like Rafa I am rooting for a Vino win!!!
No blame on Rafa for me. It's an officiating error, compounded by another one.

I think Goff would most certainly have won the first set - he was playing so well. He may well have gone on to win the match but we'll never know. It's probably harsh to blame Rafa for not conceding the point but he must have known the ball was out and he could easily have engineered things so that Goffin won the game - that would have been a fair outcome. As it was, the match was ruined for Goff and the spectators and it leaves a very nasty taste in the mouth. I hope RV wins tomorrow.
Just seen the replay, and listened to Nadal's excuses. The ball was way out. If Goffin was convinced it was, then Nadal should have acknowledged it. The one certain thing is Murray would have forfeited the point in those circumstances.
I really hate that sort of thing. Goffin's press showed, just how upset he was.

I don't have anything against Rafa. I'm not interested in watching the final, but it's let the best player win, as far as I'm concerned. What I do disagree with though, and have done long before today, is the depiction of Rafa as oh so sporting. He's nothing of the sort. He's no cheat, but nor is he particularly sporting. There are players who would have handed the point over today - (like Goff and Andy) - and there are players who just keep their head down and leave it to the officials as Rafa did today and Youzny did in the clip that Bardot posted above. The latter group are completely within their rights and I have nothing against them, but in my years of watching Rafa I would always have put him in the latter group and don't feel he deserves a reputation for being particularly sporting. But it's ok because he'll flutter his eyelashes during the presser so I'm sure his St Raphael rep will remain intact.:rolling:

Terrible judgement on part of umpire and Rafael preferred to stay out of it. Like Hawkeye I lost interest after that. In fact I fell asleep. Rooting for Albert now.
Terrible for goff. It really changed the match. I do blame the umpire fully and I doubt if Raffa knew for sure which mark it was. However, his opponent was so sure, if I was him I would have conceded. Goff isn't the type to have and outburst and shout and plead, that would tell me all I needed to know. I know that level of sportmanship is not in the rules but it is still the right thing to do. I know I am one of the few on here to like djoko but one of my reasons is that in moments like that he has conceded the point. Not just when the umpire is completely wrong, But also when he opponent is outraged and he isn't sure. Nadal doesn't do that and this match reminded me off one between him and djoko on clay, the umpire was wrong, nadal kicked off, djoko conceded, not long later the umpire was wrong again, djoko kicked off but nadal just left it. I wondered i that would stop djoko conceding a point for nadal in the future (I may have thought twice), but it didn't. I know people say nadal is very intense and so doesn't pay attention to his opponent kicking off, it's also said that he belivies it's the umpires job and if they are wrong then both players suffer the same. If he really believes that, then that's fine, people would understand that, but then he can't benefit from others conceding.
What annoyed me was fabrice going on about how hard this was for Raffa, feeling blamed by the crowd etc, he just wouldn't leave it and I just kept thinking yeah but tomorrow he'll be in the final. What about sorry for goff?
On the bright side, though I think goff would have got the first set, I don't think he would have won so in the grand scheme he isn't really worse off.
