View Full Version : AMFF gathering - September 23rd - Newcastle on Tyne
I've read, on the Yahoo website, prosecco is very good for us. It, supposedly, helps us live longer and is supposedly helps us have a better memory. So, I know which drink to have in September.

No, it is the sparkling wine of Italy. Only sparkling wine from the Champagne region in France can be called champagne but others from other countries can be just as good as I have drunk fizz from many countries and rarely been disappointed. It is an advantage that some Prosecco is cheaper than some champagne. Still like Bollinger though! I do not know any cheap women......Oh, hang on, think I know one!:cheers:
Surprised you don't like prosseco cocktails ange. They are some of my favourites. No worries though, if we do go to a proseeco brunch I will happily have yours, if caro doesn't beat me to it ;)

I need to check the dates at work first see if I can get the time off, then I need to actually SPEAK to said rellies - as they are actually on husbands side not mine ;) am sure they'd be fine with an additional too if Jan is wanting to come :D
So, checked holiday bookings at work, someone has that week and the next week off, meaning I can't book the days off

No, but It would take longer to travel to Newcastle that it does to Rouen (if you exclude the 3 hour delay at the start!) I can't fly, would need to get several trains
Rouen was 13 hours each way for us so I'm looking forward to Newcastle only being 3ish lol (now there will all sorts of queues of course). Though cursing Liverpool being so expensive as it was nearly no travel time. Never been to Newcastle but I have heard nice things. Hopefully the weather will be good :)
Why can't you fly? It's the quickest way to Newcastle. I once flew there from Southampton, I think we were only in the air for half an hour. Although having said that, I'm considering a leisurely drive, stopping at one or two other places on the way.

I'd have to go to Gatwick/Heathrow/Luton to fly to Newcastle! - just looked up the trains - tis very nearly 5 hours! and 3 if not 4 trains

Are you able to go from Ashford Intl? If so it's 4hrs 6m via St Pancras/KingsX (walk between the 2 is approx. 5mins).
Out 07.43 eta Newky 11.49 on Saturday; leave Newky 15.31 Sun, eta Ashford 19.50.
Main snag might be cost ... £113.50 return.
I guess if you have to go from nearest station it's more limited and would cost more.

Of course!! Everyone is. Just get your hotel. A lot of us are staying in the Caledonian in Newcastle on the 23rd. I don't know if there were still rooms on booking.com but late rooms and the hotel's website had some.
Some are staying elsewhere. Those that are any other recommendations ?
If you are coming I'll add you to the list :) :)
Even from the Midlands, Newcastle is not the easiest or cheapest to get to so I can understand those of you in the south will have convoluted journeys .... it will all be worth it to see each other though. We have looked at trains 12 weeks ahead to get an idea of cost and it's still expensive. I thought we'd find much better fares but not really
Luckily for us Kev offered to drive, and his car is efficient. I didn't want to drive there and it would cost twice as much in my car. Liv's car probably wouldn't fit the 3 of us and our stuff lol

I never use to the train, unless I'm in London. I find it a lot cheaper to drive, as it usually costs me £40 return (if I up before I leave to go wherever I'm going and then do the same before coming home).

I agree, Maureen. I use TransPennine a lot from Manchester Airport to Edinburgh and the seats are anything but comfortable. Maybe ok for a short commute but not great for a 4 hour journey.

Re; Virgin 1st Class at the weekend. It is a downgraded service at the weekend but sometimes they only charge a tenner each way for it - anymore than that and it's not worth the money. But free wifi and a packed lunch, plus free drinks and the extra space isn't too bad tor a tenner. The last few times I've used the weekend 1st class, they had improved the food offering - I did get a proper pack of sandwiches, plus crisps, a muffin and piece of fruit and plenty of drinks (not booze!). If I'm doing a 2 or 3 hour journey I'll pay a tenner for that, but no more
I was in first class this weekend on virgin east coast and can confirm no booze :( But the free wifi and extra space did make it worthwhile because it wasn't too much more than standard.
JAMES4578
26-04-2017, 19:23
First class service certainly inferior at weekends though suppose less staff, while since booked it on a weekend but mind being taken aback on morning journey via Virgin west coast to London when all you got was a limited snack pack and Tea/Coffee served in Disposable Cups! Maybe it's improved slightly since then but certainly no Drinks Trolley, see Virgin now offer the Beam Entertainment Service (https://www.virgintrains.co.uk/experience/beam) in both First Class and Standard.

I'll investigate before we book - the extra space would be good - it's a long way from Aberdeen to Newcastle!
I always book first class if I can. I like the fact it's quieter, there is more space, and wifi included. The food and booze is a bonus to me. The cheap tickets come on sale three months before, so around the 23rd June.
Unsure yet if I can make this

Have received an e-mail from the Caledonian Hotel regarding request for a room where we can meet up on the Saturday afternoon. They would like to know what the room would be used for and how many delegates. Are people still interested in a separate meeting place say from about 3pm until 7pm? Please thank this post if you would like me to go ahead and find out more. Would be grateful if it could be done asap as presumably these rooms book up quite quickly. There is the other alternative suggested....that we just take over the bar. Look forward to your response.

Can you ask them if they can provide music if its in a seperate room? ;) will this cost us more money if we do this?...i presume it will. In that case i propose we just take over the bar. Also i noticed by the pictures on the website there seems to be a large area of outdoor seating so IF the weather is kind to us we may get sitting outside.
I don't mind just taking over the bar Mo - might be more lively. Wonder if a separate room might put us somewhere else in the hotel? But happy to go with the flow.

I'd rather take over the bar ... obviously!
:wino:
Appreciate you looking into this for us SG though.
:flowers:
I suspect if we were allocated a room it'd be a 'meeting' room with very little atmosphere and not very 'cosy' as it's unlikely to have 'easy' seating. Given a lot of folks might be arriving at different times the hotel might not get much business out of us there, probably not enough to justify paying an extra member of staff.
The bar is probably plenty big enough for all of us ...
... more to the point WHERE are we going to eat!!!

Yep, I was just keeping an eye on the thread in case there where any additions. However there haven't been any for sometime so I will take it as it is now. We have a while yet as the meet isn't for 23 weeks but I thought it might be useful to get a list going, so there is a better idea of numbers. It can be edited as we go.
The thread still hasn't been live that long so there may be more to join. If I've left you off or not added your +1 or you decide not to go just post on here and I'll change the list. If I have added you in error, just let me know.

? I don't think the meal location has been decided? More likely to be one of the MANY local eateries in Jesmond (a good plan!) or even downtown Newk.astl.
But the BAR appears to be at the Caledonian so that's easy peasy 'innit?
I've still got 2 hotels booked ... might be staying at the Cairns around the corner but only 'cos it'll be a bit better for my eyes than any of the ones on Osborne Road with loads of streetlights.
Sorry folks, I'm not being snobby - just aware of what I need.

(erm, so I'll be cancelling a room at the Caledonian if anyone is still looking for one there!)
Sorry for the delay, I have been mega busy and then suffering the side effects of my typhoid jab. I am looking for restaurants around Jesmond as it seems many of us are staying around there. Spoke to two today, one who would split the group and one who would do a group booking at 6.30 (too early) or 9 (too late), I will continue with my phone calls and update on here when I have a place booked. Hopefully today.

Can anyone tell me what station I should take train to in Newcastle - Metro or Main? Not sure which one is more suitable for the hotel.
The Metro is a completely separate network from the mainline (in the Newcastle area at least) - so you will change at Newcastle Central Station (Main) and take the escalator down to the Metro. It is underground there and there are two Metro platforms. If you are heading for Jesmond (I'm not attending but recall that was the venue) you take the Metro heading for the Coast or the Airport as opposed to South Shields or Sunderland. It's three stops (all underground).

I thought I might try the train rather than driving or flying, as I have a Senior Railcard. The other day I got an email from Railcard promoting Newcastle, so I checked ticket prices - and it said I can't use my Railcard for this journey!

Can I ask how people feel about dinner at 6.30. Seems no restaurant are happy with late tables for large groups
I'm happy to go with the flow Jerry. We're there for the weekend to be together so it makes no difference to me when we eat.
I'm happy with that as well, Jerry.

6.30 is fine with me Jerry
They are being difficult in general. The restaurant I wanted. So I'm thinking of changing. They wanted the table back for 8 but an hour and a half seems short considering how slow service can be on a Saturday night. Rather have it open ended. So the local place will fall in favour of the name brand.
Elizabeth or Elaine - is gluten free pizza or rissoto any good to you (vegetarian of course) the new place's pasta is not. There's superfood salad too but that wouldn't fill me :P

6.30pm is fine. It's a big group so it's never easy to slot in. You'd think they'd realise how lucrative it's likely to be though....
6:30 is fine for me. I don't do late.
Any time, early or late, the important thing is that we are all together

Hi Jerry, I can't remember if I put my name down for the meal or not but I will be in Newcastle. Please can I be added to the meal if it's not too late? Happy with any time, no dietary requirements. Thanks!

Jerry, any time is suitable for me and also Elaine. Gluten free pizza or risotto will be fine for Elaine.
Thanks Elizabeth. The place with less gluten free options was just more helpful than the one with the one with the pasta too. That one didn't seem keen on our business!

I was looking at train from Glasgow Central at 9.40 and priced at £66.80. Not sure if that is a good price or not so have not booked it yet.
Have found train with one change for £39.00.

Have found train with one change for £39.00.
Im not booking just yet as any trains that are coming up for that date all have changes & are £55 yet the week b4 you can get it direct for 32 quid so im gonna do some more research on it. Really cant be bothered changing trains for a 3 hour journey.
So the mystery of the 3 hour journey from Edinburgh to Newcastle is solved! Bus replacement service on Sat 23rd - wouldn't you just know it!! Details below from National Rail Enquiries website:-
Network Rail are carrying out engineering work between Widdrington and Berwick upon Tweed, closing all lines.
CrossCountry will operate a bus replacement service between Newcastle and stations to Edinburgh.
Northern will operate a bus replacement service between Morpeth and Chathill.
ScotRail will operate a bus replacement service between North Berwick / Dunbar and Edinburgh.
Virgin Trains East Coast will operate an hourly service between Newcastle and Edinburgh via a diversionary route extending journey times by approximately 90 minutes.
The Virgin East Coast diversion is via Carlisle. Round about road for a shortcut!! So that explains it. Now I need to decide if I can face driving instead. 3 hours is nonsense, the normal journey is 90 minutes. Apparently on the Sunday the trains will be running as usual, but I'm not sure whether to trust that :)

Restaurant is not the one I wanted as one wanted a huge deposit and the other seemed to want us to be in and out in next to no time. Hard to be social when on a deadline. You'd think more places would want our business but clearly not. They must have heard what a rowdy bunch we are :)
It's pizza express Jesmond. At 7pm, deposit is paid. They don't have a set menu for a Saturday night so it's from the standard menu which I will put on here. They want preorders but there isn't a big rush so have a look when you get a minute and let me know your choices. If there are any changes to the menu I will let you know.

Jerry if you have paid the deposit you must be out a lot of money and it's a while yet till we meet, so can we reimburse you now? Thank you for all your hard work. It's great to sit back and allow it all to be done for you!!
Thank you for the thought pat you are very kind but it wasn't that much and I'm ok to wait until after the meet. I factored in the deposit when I picked a place. Being a greedy food lover I will probably be having 3 courses but I know there are other strange ones like Kev out there who don't like dessert so I imagine there will be many 2 courses as well.

Well since booking this our circumstances have changed quite dramatically. I will still be coming and KevD will certainly be driving us there as we have already arranged to give lifts to supergran and Yellowlivi. But whether KevD can come for the meal will depend on how settled my nephew is, (he is living with us now), and if he is, whether we can arrange overnight babysitting or respite or something for him. Maybe KevD will have to ask his parents lol

He is 15 but has CP and learning difficulties. So he's an awful lot younger in his mind. Normally he'd probably still be ok, but he has been extremely unpredictable of late.

Was harbouring hopes of being a late add on to this depending on how the cash was flowing post America trip- but we find ourselves eying up an Easter cruise down the California coastline- it never usually fits in with any of our school breaks so we feel it's meant. Currently negotiating prices but it's gone be dear- and an expense I don't normally have that early in year, so I think I'm now conceding defeat. Have a drink or five for me!

Thought I'd better refresh my memory on how to get to the Caledonian from Newcastle Central. The Metro looks an easy option, an 8 minute ride from Newcastle Central to West Jesmond with a 0.4 mile walk from West Jesmond station to the hotel. Both stations are within zone A so a single zone ticket costs £1.70 per journey. Looks like you can buy a ticket from machines at the stations https://www.nexus.org.uk/tickets?mode%5B0%5D=45&type%5B0%5D=52&freq%5B0%5D=69
Alternatively the Caledonian's website states it's around a 5 minute taxi drive from the city centre
