Andy's prospective route to the 2nd round:
R1: Bye
I fancy his chances. :p
:cauldron:
Could it have been more difficult?
Raonic is not on form. Wawrinka went out earlier than Murray. The other side with Del P, Kyrgios, Thiem, Nishikori, Ferrer, Careno Busta, etc seems far worse - or is it me? He could have got a Nadal on his side.
But also, (as we well know!), draws don't always work out as projected, so it's hardly worth getting too bothered about it just yet...one match at a time! ;)
To be honest - I didn't look at the other side of the draw - that is equally as difficult!

Hmmm, Fognini is a tricky firstmatch prospect.... but looking on bright side hopefully the Italians will see this as prime time viewing and put it on late meaning I actually get to see Andy.
I see Copil lost his qualifier today in Rome! And Aljaz won!!:clap:
Foggy and Berrettini second match up in the morning! :nailbiter:
I think Fognini could be a very difficult test for Andy - especially as he is on his home turf.
Even with Fognini/Berrettini playing tomorrow you'd think it very unlikely Andy's first match will be on Monday.

I think Fognini could be a very difficult test for Andy - especially as he is on his home turf. I agree - I'm sure Fognini on clay in Italy would not be Andy's preferred first match of the tournament!
We'll just have to hope that it's crazy Fognini that turns up, rather than clay wizard Fognini!
Fognini is the only one to take a set off Nadal in Madrid this week. Maybe 21 year old wild card Berrettini(#250) playing his first ever ATP tour main draw match tomorrow will take care of him. ;)
Kyrgios withdrew from his doubles SF match in Madrid today with a hip injury and has tweeted he hopes to be fit for Rome. Nishikori also hopes to be fit to play. Both are in Djokovic's quarter.

So, Fabio it is. C'mon Andy you love a challenge
I was getting so depressed, when I came on the forum, because of the negativity that seems to be rife. May I remind you things can turn very quickly, also last year both Federer and Nadal were written off.
Lendl was not due to arrive until a week on Monday, and as Andy said he has long sessions with him every Monday so Andy his team and Lendl will be examining how Andy is playing and working on strategies.
Stan W has not been doing too well either, in fact he went out earlier. As for Nole he was given a WO and I think he would have lost to K N.
I am convinced that Andy will turn things around and once he starts winning then his confidence will return and anything can happen, as we saw last year.
Have faith in Andy and send positive vibes to him :grouphug:
To be fair, Mickey, I think a lot of people on this forum have been very positive about Andy's prospects - which I know is not always the case elsewhere.

I don't think anyone doubts Andy's ability to start winning again, it's more that they have been frustrated on Andy's behalf because he hasn't been able to snatch golden opportunities to gain points before the second half of the year win he has to win virtually everything just to break even. Even if Andy does turn it around right now, and wins Rome he's just breaking even. It's not being negative, it's being factual - the major chances to bank mega points were in the first half of the year, they have been and gone. Seriously frustrating for Andy and for us, but nothing to be done, so look forward not back Andy - win in Bella Roma! You CAN do it, laddie.
Sorry I felt the negativity and it did depress me, but happy those who didn't.
Many of us expressed concern, as Andy himself did. I don't think that's being negative...just realistic and showing empathy with Andy. Concern about someone shows you care about them and want nothing only the best for them and I definitely think that is the case with most of us here. We all want more than anything to see Andy firing on all cylinders again, and that is going to happen! We go through all the highs and lows with him in equal measure and are always with him no matter what! I call that optimism.
Aljaz & Kyle on tomorrow's schedule. Aljaz has drawn wild card Mager with the winner playing Djokovic in the 2nd round.

It looks like Fognini's going no further, down a set & a break to young Zverev.....warning from umpire Lahyani, .... mentally he's lost it.
Fruitloop Fabio on show today unlike the fabby Fabio Andy faced. For me his behaviour is far worse than Kyrgios and he'll be 30 next week. There's pleasure to be had watching him being thumped by Zverev. :shades:

Fognini shakes hands with Lahyani telling him he's "f****** unbelievable".
Heard that, and it was immediately followed by an apology from the commie!
Surely these two incidents alone warranted Fognini being defaulted. Manhandling Lahyani (https://twitter.com/morunien/status/865159874547638272) and kicking the linesman's chair. (https://twitter.com/doublefault28/status/865156919161483264)
And Goffin has fallen to Cilic.

I used to really like Fabio until a couple of years when at the Shanghai masters he full on shoulder-barged a young Chinese player who couldn't have been more than 18 during a changeover. The poor kid looked very upset and utterly bewildered. Unbelievably good tennis on his day, but Fabio's got quite a nasty side to him.

This match is a total snoozefest :sleepy:
I see lots of lightning :rain:
Brilliant match between Thiem and Rafa! Thiem was on fire. I think playing Rafa 3 times in a row in quick succession, apart from being 3rd time lucky, meant Thiem learned from each experience, clearly improved on the second meeting and was able to put his winning game plan into practice without having to wait too long between matches against Rafa. Rafa played some brilliant shots on the odd occasion when Dom let him. But that was the issue. Not Rafa playing below par, but Dom not allowing Rafa to get a look in.
Although I wouldn't have minded which of them won, I'm quite pleased, again, to see the points being spread around so no one gets too close to Andy during his down phase. If Thiem can keep this form going, then even RG is not a given for Rafa. T'would be handy to see 2000 points going elsewhere other than Nole or Rafa or Fed if Andy can't do well.
If Andy doesn't win RG, I'd love Thiem to win it.

shame , was hoping to come home to see Thiem had beaten Djoko :( After watching him take out Rafa , was feeling kinda hopeful that he might win the whole thing !!
didnt see the match but 6-1 ... 6-0 ?? was Thiem really that bad ?
No - Thiem wasn't that bad - just a bit jaundiced from yesterday's win - but Djoko was very much back on form and not taking any prisoners He just didn't give Thiem any breathing space at all.
Guess he isnt quite there yet then , you gotta play great for more than a couple of matches to win a masters or a slam

Well done Sascha  Though, tbh he rode an extraordinary amount of luck (Andy, Stan, Fabio all by the wayside) to reach his first masters final then faced a still sub par Novak to claim it. Is he a better, more multi-faceted player than the likes of Goff, Dom, Kei, Dimi who are also chasing their first masters? Nope, as you'd expect with a 20 year old, he's got a far from developed game, he got lucky but well done to him on keeping calm and getting the job done (although with big helping hand from Novak).
As for Novak - one swallow does not a summer make. Felt yesterday that talk of his resurgence was premature. It's easy to dole out a beating to oppo that you know is coming into the match physically and mentally gassed - I've watched Dom a lot, and he had nothing in the tank, he's just too much of a decent guy to make excuses.
But Sascha's a likeable kid and result helped Andy, so I'll take it

I totally agree, but equally when he loses I do like his exchanges at the net with the winner!
I have always thought that Djokovic is a much better loser than winner. He has always been extremely gracious in defeat.

As half the next Gen will end up actually at the WTF perhaps they will need an old crocks getting past it a bit special tournament rather than a next Gen one.
May give us a chance of seeing Andy! OK JOKE! But he is 13th in the race. :)

It's early days - he'll get there!

Well Done Sascha. OK, Novak was not on full form but he only played as well as he was allowed to. It would have been so easy for a 20-year-old to look across the net, see Djoko and crumble - especially in his first final - but this kid has self belief in spades.
He is going to be an asset to tennis (and perhaps a bit of a pain occasionally to us Murray fans ;)
Shades of Andy - and Djoko - when they were 20!
