Andy has really surprised me today by just how well he has played. As they have just said though how much will this take out of the winner with the match lasting a possible 5 hours.

DaveArneRiise
09-06-2017, 14:45
Usually we would say Andy has the physical edge when it goes the distance, not sure can say that with Stan. He is a 5 set expert and one of the fittest players on tour, if he is tired he is also capable of shortening the points and blasting his way to a set. Andy would have to be really focused if it does go to a decider....

Stell
09-06-2017, 14:45
They've only had one five set match, which Andy won (but it was at Wimbledon).

Fantastic effort from Andy at this tournament  Given his recent form, if someone had told us that Andy would reach the semi and only lose after a huge tussle with the clay court beast Stanimal, we would have taken that all day long. On to the grass Andy, that's your natural habitat.

Stan, good luck for the final.:peace:

Such a shame - such a great match. I cant be too sad because - after where he was a few weeks back - he put up a great semi. He will not be unsatisfied with his overall
efforts this year so we musnt be either. He ran out of steam which is something we just aren't used to.

As for the final - well, I'm not keen on Stan getting another slam - but then he has never been number one in the world has he ???

That was a really fabulous tennis match. We couldn't have asked any more of Andy...he was in top defensive mode and those lobs and droppers!! And that 1st set TB...awesome! And it has to be said, Stan was amazing. This has probably already been said, and will be said many times I am sure, but 10 days ago if we had been told Andy would make it to the SF, we would have taken that and ran!! Instead today we were treated to a wonderful display of tennis and it was just so good to see the level of tennis Andy played. There are many positives to be taken from this, not least that Andy goes into the grass court season in really good form. Things are truly looking up and I'm not sad at all! Bravo Andy! You are so good and we couldn't be more proud! :bravo:

That was a great match. Well done Andy - he absolutely did his best. :bravo: Might have sneaked it in the fourth, but at the tiebreak was clear to see he was exhausted.

Would certainly have taken this result at the start of RG. But I think it shows that being the best defender in the world is not enough on clay against a brilliant player like Stan. Andy had to run far too much and by 5th set was gone. Don't know if lack of aggression is due to the issues he has had or is just too inbuilt - I suppose it is his style and too late to change now but I do wish he had learned to be more aggressive in his younger days to allow him to continue at the top for longer.

I know all the positives and agree with them, he did much better than a lot expected and will be happier going in to the grass season now :) but I always expect him to win and I still hadn't ruled him out til the last point..........I'm sure everyone else feels the same, exhausted!

So sad for Andy, I wanted him to win so badly, he worked hardly on this surface and he deserved it after losing in many finals :crying:
I saw the live scoring at work (7-6 / 3-0), when arriving home, Andy just broke and won the 2nd set! Amazing points! Then, when he lost the tie break on the 4th set, so frustrating  And at the beginning of the 5th set, break! I wasn't able to watch, and thanksfully I didn't watch  (People are probably happy to see Stan's victory)

Congrats Stan, but I couldn't handle the fact of him winning more GS than Andy... i Vamos para la Decima Rafa ! I like Rafa as well!

Sorry that it wasn't to be. Saw from mid-1st set to mid-2nd set but then had to follow on livescores. Can't decide whether to watch the recording. Did Andy just run out of steam in the 5th?
Even so as I said yesterday I'm pretty happy with where Andy is at now, he's come so far in this tournament. If someone had said SF a few weeks ago we would all have snapped it up.... and the grass beckons ...

Definitely worth watching the first set TB Kath!!

I was lucky enough to catch that bit in my lunch hour Pat..trying not to fist pump and cheer in the staff room, while watching on my phone :barmy: Brilliant points from both players

Wow!! What a match. Disappointed Andy couldn't finish it in 4 but sooo happy that he made the semi final and played like our Andy.

I think that his fitness is still not quite 100% and so had my doubts he could win if it went to a fifth, but was hopeful.

Hope Rafa wins tomorrow, would like to see him get his 10th.

Looking forward to the :grass:

Oh, and I think I saw Roy (although I've never met him). They showed someone standing waving a small flag and holding up an Andy #1 T shirt. Was that you Roy???

Watch it, the third set was amazing, Andy really had chances to win the 4th, another great set, Andy was tired towards the end but still almost won it, the fifth, if you wan't to see a drained Andy fighting to avoid the bagel, you will see how amazing he was to almost win the 4th. He came into this having only played 3 short 2 setters in over a month, losing 2 badly. I think if he had been offered the semi he would have said great, thanks! The fact it included good victories over Delpo and Kei show he is getting into good shape to defend Queens and Wimbledon

Yes that was me, that was the forum tshirt we had for Rouen. Andy definitely appeared to slow a little towards the end of the 4th but he still almost...and possibly should have, won it! He hasn't played any long matches this year, the last time he had a long match was at the ATP finals (last longer match was Glasgow) but how many problems has Andy since then. What it showed is Andy is really coming back, the speed and accuracy of some of Stan shots and the fact Andy got so many back, shows how he is getting very close to his real capabilities which he should be for the green green grass of home!

Really wish more Brits had gone, we were massively outnumbered by the Swiss and it was so easy to buy a ticket on the official resale site, I watched and waited the evening before, turning down cat1/2/3 tickets until i saw a great cat1 ticket behind the Umpire. The Loges and five rows in front of me were all hospitality, my sixth row was directly behind Andy's bench and it felt just like an away DC view....really could have done with a few DC fans around me! A nice French couple behind me asked could they wave my big flag towards the middle of the 4th, they were cheering Andy (him especially)and convinced he was going to win. Unfortunately French neutrals cheering for Andy were in the minority but i did hear one of the Spanish in front shouting Vamos Andy, a couple of times. A few around me joined in on my ole ole ole when Andy did amazing but otherwise the crowd picked up after Stan begged for support, after a spectacular point and became pretty noisy. Could you near any of the individual shouts on tv? Mine were Andy...Cmon Andy, ole ole ole......it's Groundhog day Stan ....and a few others

I didn't spot you Roy, but well done for cheering!!
The crowd seemed overwhelmingly pro-Stan. I had half an eye on doing other things but could tell immediately who had won each point from the crowd's reaction.

I must say that although I didn't want Andy to loose, but was quite happy once it went to the fifth set that Andy lost as he was exhausted and would have found it very difficult for him to come out and face Rafa on Sunday, and play the standard of tennis he would have wanted. This way he can have a little rest over the weekend then get ready for the grass.

Wasn't on here yesterday and must say that although disappointed Andy not in final certainly satisfied with his performances at the French-really did come into form! So close to the win but perhaps not quite at full fitness yet, very encouraging for the grass . In all likelihood would've very tough v Nadal in final,Wawrinka will also have his work cut out though on big occasion can't count him out.

It could have been a dummy, he hardly moved! Seriously, yes normal crowd in Andy's support tram area

Perhaps those people were not watching the match either - too busy making sarky comments on websites!

I can't help but think what 6 great matches Andy treated us to at RG. All 6 opponents offered very different challenges and we ended up with quite an Andy match fest. The general consensus of opinion on here is that Andy far exceeded expectations and everyone is satisfied and happy with his form and for his prospects going into the grass court season. Everything is positive and looking good!

Been away with my class this week in a little 'children and the outdoors' bubble. Been great fun (if a little sleep deprived) but missed the tennis other than the results being texted to me. No one gave Andy much chance of making semi s at start of tournament so hopefully this is the launch pad for his year. Bring on the grass.

Andy did good and best of all, although disappointed, he thinks so too.
I was watching on a commentatorless stream so I heard you, Roy!

Thanks for letting me know Pabbers, i'm pretty sure Andy heard me (and Stan), that was my main purpose. Andy did look up my way a couple of times on his way to the bench. I also heard from a number of people my flag was spotted as well my Rouen AMFF t-shirt which I held up a few times showing Murray #1
