The bookies have Stan as the favourite against Andy on Friday.

Not surprising really, given that Stan has sailed through without losing a set. In fact I think Andy is only one of the semi finalists who has lost sets.

Hurry back home to watch the match in the middle of the 2nd set (the right moment) Congrat!
I don't know why many people hate Andy... He's indeed adorable, sometimes he smiles and applauds his opponents!

Afraid of SF :crying: Hope it'll be a remake of 2016

After Andy's match against Kei, Fabrice asked Petch how Andy has been able to find such good form here, after coming in cold. Petch said that 30 years ago exactly Lendl came into Roland Garros allegedly out of shape, lacking confidence and nobody giving him a chance. He won the title and considered it one of his best and most enjoyable because he proved everyone wrong. Andy also thrives on silencing naysayers. Stan is tough on clay but sometimes it just comes down to will; I'm backing Andy 100% to come through.

Stan's h2h with Cilic is 11-2. Just one of those nightmare match ups for Marin. I have big respect for Stan but, and maybe it's wishful thinking, I'm not reading too much into today...:peace:

I also have another theory about what's inspiring Andy, centered around the number of floaty tops I've clocked Kim wearing all tournament, but it's rude to speculate so I won't.;). I shall just say good luck Andy, tame the Stanimal once more. I believe.

I wonder what the bookies' reasoning is to make Stan the favourite.Andy won in 4 pretty comfortably in the semi last year. Granted a year is a long time in tennis and Andy's clay season wasn't special coming into RG, but then neither was Stan's. Personally I don't understand the bookies at all. Anyway, forget them, all that matters is that Andy proves them wrong

Oh true, he won Geneva. Well, when he's won slams Stan has come into them having done nothing so maybe his Geneva win will be counterproductive. He's peaked too soon and is just trying to talk a good game! :)

Stan is only the slight favourite with the bookies. There is not a huge difference in the odds.

Ah, I see. Thanks, I have no idea how these things work. So, in theory can punters change the fave; i.e. people put money on Stan not because they genuinely think he's going to win but because Andy win odds won't give them much, then as more people back Stan for those reasons the odds change and Stan becomes fave? Sorry, totally clueless about it. (when I put a bet on Andy to do calendar/career slam I went into shop and got the girl in there to place it for me )

Josephine
08-06-2017, 11:11
I think they bet on who they think is going to win. The more bets for one player the shorter the odds - i.e the less you can win, as the bookies don't want to lose money, and that person is the favourite.

So if Stan is favourite it is because more people think he is going to win and are betting on him to do so. Don't think people bet the opposite of what they think generally, but as I have never placed a bet in my life, this is the blind leading the blind!

I mean there are betting scams and things but I don't think this is the case here.

Caro
08-06-2017, 11:51
So yet again I will miss the match and will be frantically checking live scores, but if the early match favours Andy, I'm not complaining (well I am but I'll put up with it!) ... so you'll just have to get to the final Andy so I can finally sit down and watch a whole match (did see the DelPo one to be fair).

Stan has been playing pretty well this whole tournament which is quite unusual. Like Andy, he tends to have difficult matches in the first week but that hasn't happened here. We know how he can overpower anyone on his day .... but Andy is smart, he can slice and dice, he can throw Stan of his rhythm ... he is getting better and better (sometimes having to work things out tactically but coming through in the end), he can do this! I believe ... COME ON ANDY!!! #LetsDoThis :swingin::swingin:

Me too RB - however I place a bet on Andy winning every grand slam.
The poor guy there makes this attempt to explain how it works every time! Still clueless!
But I place the bet anyway as a mark of faith and commitment to him.
Have one on him winning on Sunday ( she says very quietly for fear of jinxing him!)

08-06-2017, 13:59
And here's an example of how betting works. Andy was bang out of form coming into Paris and has never won here. Consequently, I think Hoopgirl would have got odds around the 14-1 mark. It is not just about how much money is placed on him, if the bookmaker doesn't think he can win he'll continue to back his own judgement and take more money at those odds. Now, if we move 3 weeks later to Wimbledon - Andy has a great record here and is now seemingly in form. Given that Nadal is rubbish on grass, Djokovic is all over the shop and Federer is a bit of an unknown, expect Andy's odds to be little better than 2-1. That's simply because the bookmakers won't risk offering anything more than that because no doubt he'll have a great chance of winning it.

Disappointed to miss seeing it live. I'll catch 45 minutes or so of it over my lunch hour but otherwise will just have to track the score on livescores. Win or lose Andy has come a long way over the last two weeks and in good shape for the grass, so I'm happy but obviously always want him to win

I suppose it's nice for a player to be able to say they hadn't lost a set in a tournament, but in reality I don't think it matters. I think it's more of a media thing to hype things up a bit. All that matters is the next match up and getting past the person on the other side of the net regardless of previous results. The fact that Andy has dropped a couple of sets (still much less than last year at RG!) and Stan hasn't IMO is irrelevant! Andy will soon change that tomorrow anyway! He can be the first to take sets off Stan!!

As I already mentioned, at the start of this Grand Slam for the first time in years (perhaps going back to Andy's teenage years) I was happy if Andy won his first match, then his second... and only after the del Potro victory did I have a look at the draw.
Now Andy has played better than the rest of his clay court season and importantly has played well enough to beat each of his opponents. And although Ken was mentally tough for Andy, particularly during that first set (as was del Potro), and he has played some four set matches, nothing has been so draining to effect his levels tomorrow.

I think Andy can win tomorrow if he brings out the level of tennis he found against Stan last year. If Stan is at 100% GS (clay) performance he may not. I hope he wins tomorrow but whether he is a SF, F or winner at Roland Garros I want him to go in the grass part of the season feeling that he is back! :)
