Andy to face the winner of the Gilles Simon/Matthew Ebden match. Ebden has taken the first set, but Simon is 4-1 up in the second.

Andy has a winning H2H against Gilles Simon: 8-1, and Andy won their last match in Bangkok, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

Andy has never played Matthew Ebden.

Tough opener for Andy but he came through and it sets him up well for the rest of the tournament. Bit disappointing that he went yonderly in the 2nd set but he played the big points better than Stan and that made the difference.

Andy had a lot to adjust to in this first match in Shanghai (it was Stan's 3rd) where he'd had no chance to play himself in following a Bye and then W/O. This 2hr 18min session has certainly brought him up to speed and given him time to understand how the court and balls are playing.

He's through to the Quarter-Finals and still on track to defend his title.

Should Andy make it through to the semis, he will face either Dolgopolov or Nishikori.

Andy has a winning H2H against Dolgopolov: 2-0, his last victory at the Australian Open, 7-5, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.

And has never played Nishikori.

Yes, well done Andy! The tricky first match, especially coming a bit later in the tourney than expected, is thankfully out of the way!

Well done Andy! :cheer: Stan is always tough for him - a bit like Baghdatis last week - so it's very encouraging that Andy was able to beat him. But considering it was Andy's first match, he played some very nice tennis.

No on court interview with Sky today, shame.

well-negotiated Andy. It would be a treat to see the Andy of last week every match, but we have to be realistic!

Andy played some great stuff there against a difficult opponent - sure he had one or two lapses but that was to be expected. Although it would have been nice for him to do it in two, I think the match practice of the extra set might stand him in good stead going forward.

Well done Andy! :cheer::cheer::cheer:

Stan proving tough at times again but by all accounts Andy got the win convincingy enough in the end and I'm sure can step it up, well done.! Looks ike the decider could have been more straightforward but Andy came though which is all that matters and I agree may benefit from the extra court time considering this was his first match. Was following the scores at work and will view later.

Well done Andy, he'll feel better having this match behind him and either Gilles or Matthew won't cause him too many problems so it's looking good.

Stan always seems to give Andy a tough match, so Andy did well to get through that considering it was his first match. Roll on Ebden (isn't he a snooker player, too?)

Yes I think a lot of people on here said it would be a toughy for him esp as he had a lot less time on court, but again he showed a good side to him again today that he didnt let the loss of the 2nd set get to him too much and carried on being aggressive. Very impressed by Andys playing and mentality over the past few weeks. Definite improvement.

Thought Andy was going for the traditional third set bagel there for a while ..But glad to see he got his first match under his belt without too much drama. As a mere spectator I don't want to underestimate the difficulty of making the transition from one set of conditions to another. I thought Andy's remarks earlier this week very interesting, talking about tennis players confronted with different balls in different tournaments, compared to golfers using the same ones all the time. I see his point.

davech
13-10-2011, 18:52
Yeah, I thought that was interesting too. An unfamiliar ball has been a problem for some kickers at the rugby world cup too. Unfortunately, it's the way of the world that different ball manufacturers make sponsorship deals with different tournament organisers.

Great win Andy! glad its over. Im never happy until Andy has beaten Stan, I'm always a little unsure of what way it will go. Hope andy can keep it going, I thought for a while he looked a bit tired but then it was his first match. I think my sky sports will finish tomorrow but hoping they forget  No. 3 getting closer

Couldn't see it as I was at work but I was checking the livescore. Did he have one of his walkabouts in the 2nd set? And when he was 5-0 up in the 3rd, why couldn't he close it out?

Watched all the match. Stan is always a tough opponent even though after he won the 2nd and was 0-3 down had to have a rest.medical treatment!!! It didn't help as Andy did well in the third even though he took his time getting through. Let's face it, Andy had not played a match on that court. Stan defended well in the third but Andy looked determined and that's what I liked. It wasn't a perfect match but what player delivers that? He did the business and that's what counts. Well done Andy!!

Great win! No Andy didn't go walkabout Stan upped his game for a while and then Andy just had a few moments here and there where his shots didn't click. Was great to see the mix of patience and aggression again, with some great volleying. But for me more than anything it was wonderful to see him simply move on to the next point when one didn't go to plan and he didn't retreat into himself either. Also liked how pumped up he seemed to be about the win.

Quite enjoyed the match even if I had to wait till this afternoon to watch it. was OK with it going to three sets because it meant more Andy and more practice for him after missing yesterday's match.
