SHANGHAI MASTERS 2011, Quarter-Final: Ebden ebbs away as Andy assures Semi place 6'3, 6'2

Andy's opponent in the Quarter-Finals will be Matthew Ebden of Perth, Australia (born S. Africa).

The 23yr old Qualified for this event beating Florent Serra and then Phillipp Petzschner.
In R1 he beat Andujar, followed by Harrison in R2 and has just defeated 8th seed Gilles Simon in 3 hard fought sets taking just over 2hrs to post a 6'2, 2'6, 7'6 win.

The world ranked #124 (career high) has been working his way up the rankings vie the Challenger tour over the last year and, according to the ATP H2H stats, hasn't yet turned Pro?

From Stu Fraser on twitter:
"This time last year, Ebden won the $15k Futures at Scotstoun. Tomorrow, he plays the world No.4 in a Masters quarter-final. Quite a story!"

Andy's never played him before so the H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=E690) is 0-0. It could be an intriguing encounter; the Australian has nothing to lose and is obviously playing very well right now. Andy might be feeling a little tired after 2 weeks of playing tennis and will probably want the match over in 2 sets.

The match is due to be played on Friday 14th October - 1pm.

I hope you are right! He will certainly have the problem of coming back to earth after beating Simon, as presumably that is the biggest win of his career. He has played five matches already and that is the equivalent of a complete ATP tourney. Having said that he might just go out with no fears and let it rip.
Andy should be OK though he looked a bit tired at the very end of the Stan match, but let's hope having played five matches last week rather than this week, he can recover. And if he can dominate in two quick sets, so much the better! Because then the prize of no. 3 will be even closer!

This could be a dangerous match for Andy having never played him before plus he must be starting to feel the tiredness after so much tennis in the past few weeks. Hope it will be more straightforward and a quick easy match for Andy.

Very hard to judge how this match will go, although don't really think Andy will lose! Havent even seen Ebden play yet except for match point tonight ;) The draw has really opened up now especially with Rafa out so I think it will be down to Andy, whether he wins the trophy, no-one else is better than.

If Andy is feeling tired then this is a perfect match - Simon's a bit of a grinder and so it's possible in my opinion for a lower-ranked player to "out-grind" him at times. Andy's a grinder too, but has dimensions to his game that Simon doesn't. So, if Andy plays to 75% of his best, in my opinion this is a great match-up for him! :)
