sorry guys but CMONNN Denis !!! :getcoat:

I don't blame you, in all honesty he's got the nicer game - love a shbh, makes a player so watchable. He's a nice kid too.

Just look at Diego! 2 sets to1 up against Cilic!

Arnaud Gabas is umpiring the Cilic/Schwartzman match on Grandstand. I don't think Denis can get him from there. ;) Apparently he's unlikely to umpire another Shapovalov match as they've become good friends.

Diego up a break in 4th as well, suppose we couldn't be sure of Cilic's form though.

Wee D does it! I enjoyed the needle between the two players after Diego fired up the crowd having saved a BP. Cilic was seething. :big grin:

No player left in the bottom half has ever reached a slam final.

Get in Diego!!! I just love watching that wee man. Another top seed away! And I was just beginning to think Cilic was sneaking in under the radar. Will go back to Kyle now. Just had to watch the end of this match.

Depressing that Isner is the highest ranked player in the bottom half and that after only 3 matches have been completed in the 3rd round. One of these will be a slam finalist.

Lorenzi
PCB
Pouille
Kukushkin
Schwartzman
Anderson
Coric
M Zverev
Isner
Albot
Querrey
Shapovalov
Edmund

Albot, who the **** is Albot? Seriously though, this is going to be so interesting - unchartered territory for all - who is going to blink, who is going hold their nerve. I wouldn't mind it being Isner or Querrey, imagine that for them at their home slam ( their dodgy politics are their business as far as I'm concerned). Isner usually plays well in States so has a great chance. Obviously got to think the overall winner will come the other half, but still a great opportunity for someone - good luck all, let the best man win  (but not Coric :p).

I am rooting for Anderson. I think he is a very decent guy. Followed by Isner who didn't spoil the party last year.

@ Clancy - as for what might have been, try to think about how Raonic must feel:-) I think he has probably missed the boat. Not to mention Berdych. I am delighted that Andy Murray took his chance, last year with Nadal and Feddykins out of the way. If this year is the price for last year's amazing run, I still think it was a good deal.

I like Kevin - he comes across as a nice quiet man who has a professional attitude to his work. I'd like to see him get through to the semifinals but fear it will be Shapovalov.

I too think about Raonic, Berdych and Dimitrov [very disappointed in his performance yesterday against Rublev] and how they must be feeling disappointed and frustrated. It looks from the way this USO is panning out that the next generation is finally emerging and they have missed the boat.

I'm very glad too that Andy made the most of the opportunity that presented itself with the demise of Novak and Rafa and Fed out of the way. We will never forget that amazing run he had and how happy and proud we were of him. He played the best tennis of his career in that run.

Good fightback to force the breaker but ultimately not enough, may not be the best match up for Denis but possibly just as much a case of maybe a match too far this time. Far from over though as Shapovalov has storming start to the 3rd to go up 3-0!

JAMES4578
03-09-2017, 18:40
Pablo just a bit stronger and was solid throughout ,fairly tight though. Shapovalov though certainly showing he has a lot of potential and has a lot of talent , didn't think he was quite ready to make big breakthrough this time though even if understandably he got a lot of attention.

RosieBear
03-09-2017, 18:47
Congrats to PCB, he might not get so many chances so good for him for taking one here. Denis' time will come for sure and he won't need a weakened field in order to get his hands on the silverware. In fact, if I had to pick a player aged 22 or under who I think is destined for greatness then forget Sascha and Nick, I'd choose Denis; incredible natural talent and great temperament. He's got a great future and that backhand is surely going to become one of the iconic shots in tennis.

Bardot
03-09-2017, 18:50

Well would you believe it! Delpo wins. Great match. The best match so far. Such rallies, such defence, such line painting from both men. I do feel for Domi. He gave it everything and was serving for the match in the 4th set. I just hope now Delpo will have enough left to play at the level required in his next match. Thank you to both men for such great entertainment. I should have been in bed long ago but it was worth staying up for!

Really disappointed that I had to miss the end of this - seems to have turned into a classic. Always sad to see Dom lose and having been 2 sets up feel this one will sting, but I just know he's going to get a slam one day. Good luck to lovely Delpo for the rest of the tournamnent - would certainly be a popular winner. All I will say is that if he takes out Fed in the next round he better beat Rafa too.

As Delpo's match very much overshadowed Fed's match on Ashe last night, all I really knew about it was that Fed won! However I have read (courtesy of BBC Sports App) about how he left the court after the second set for a MTO. Apparently, in his words, "I just needed a bit of a rub on my back. Or maybe...bottom." I really do hope Delpo can recover enough to reproduce some of the amazing shots of last night which would enable him to seriously challenge Fed. Although Fed says all is well, I do wonder how he (or his back or bottom or whatever) would withstand an onslaught like the one which Delpo delivered last night.

I read that too Pat. What I don't understand is how players are allowed MTOs for pre-existing injuries. He's acknowledged he had back problems over the last few weeks and then states he needed it rubbing during last night's match. How is that acceptable under the MTO rules?

I am going for Del Po and Anderson as the winners. Del Po has had a rough time of it, (not too mention helping us out quite a lot, but knackering players for us), and as I said I think Anderson is a decent guy. A plodder, rather like Tsonga. He has got a break and taken full advantage of it, good luck to him.

I'm neutral; love Delpo but not his game, whereas Fed sublime to watch. Happy whoever wins just so long as they beat Rafa in the semi (sorry, just can't stand his grubby pant habit any longer!). Tough to call the qf, but if he's fit think Fed will prob win - he's a wiley old fox and will keep the ball on DelPo's weak post-injury bh, just as Andy did in Rio. Will be interesting.

Nadal v Dimitrov

I woke during the night. My resolve not to miss out on any sleep was overcome by curiosity. I thought I'd just have a wee peek at the score. At that stage it was 1 set all and Delpo had just broken serve in the third! That was it!! No way was I going back to sleep despite struggling for a wee while to keep the eyes open! Fed broke back and the set went to a TB which was scintillating....full of mini breaks with Fed having had 4 set points, but on his first set point Delpo took it. There was absolutely no way I was leaving this now and I was fully wide awake! The first 4 games of the 4th set went very quickly with serve, Delpo then broke and he defended his break amazingly to get the W! As usual Fed was very gracious in defeat and there was a lovely exchange at the net. And the crowd wasn't ALL for Fed! I really hope my neighbour didn't hear my yelp of approval! So pleased for Delpo and now this tournament has become much more interesting. Really looking forward to the semi now....hope it's on first as it won't be as late as the second one. Well done Delpo! If Nadal does win the title then it will be the first time it's been done without facing a top 10 player. Carreno Busta at 19 being the highest ranked possible opponent remaining. Eclipses Hewitt's run to the 2002 Wimbledon title when he played one top 10 opponent (Henman(5) in the SF) with the other 6 all being ranked outside the top 20.

Fed fans have rekindled their Andy anger saying but for him Federer could be playing Carreno Busta in the SF. :p I saw one suggest he should withdraw from AndyMurrayLive. :big grin:

I wondered how long it would be before Fedfans started blaming Andy for Roger's loss. :grrr: Who's to say that Roger would have reached the semifinal to play Pablo? Did he not struggle in two five set matches in the early rounds? I would have liked to have seen Roger playing young Denis or Sascha. If he had been relocated to Andy's position and reached the final, he'd still have had to play and defeat either Rafa or Delboy. What amazes me the most is that even after 30 odd years he has very little ability to stand in an others shoes and understanding their feelings.

Although he isn't alone on that one by a long chalk. I believe most of our ill's (especially at the moment) can be laid squarely at the feet of

40 points is a full blown psychopath. By my reckoning Federer, Nadal, Djokovic all came out at 16 points. Murray 3, and myself 4.

PCB takes first set 6-4. Nothing spectacular just solid and Kando a bit tight. C'mon Kev, believe and grab your chance.

Carreno Busta was making early running but once Anderson got 2nd gone up a gear and may be tough to counter.

Andy said he withdrew because he wasn't fit enought to win the title. I'm sure he's not watching this thinking (unlike me ;)) oh but I could have made the final even with a dodgy hip. :p A once in a career draw. :crying: Must let it go. :shamed:

Congratulations grand slam finalist Kevin Anderson! Really happy he didn't choke his chance away, such a sweet guy and deserved to be the one to capitalise on draw:thumbup: Well done PCB too.

Bless Kevin, just made his first slam final but his first comment is to acknowledge the great players missing that allowed him to have a chance. He's a sweetie.

Bardot

Could be said that this was Kev's final which he almost acknowledged and whatever happens next is a bonus but he's playing with house money and really has nothing to lose.

Worth noting that Kevin's achievement comes after he suffered a hip injury at the end of last year forcing him to miss the Australian Open.

Well done Kevin!!!

Hope it's a good semi-final between Rafa and Potty and not a drubbing like it was in 2009. Don't mind who wins - happy for both. Just hope whoever wins today wins on Sunday.

Certainly very competitive in first but Delpo stronger , 2nd opposite though as Nadal goes up 5-0.

Delpo has had to face much tougher opponents than Nadal, who has faced no-one of significance.

If they were starting from an even keel, think Delpo could have beaten Nadal, but he looks to have run out of steam.

Going to bed now.

Vamos Delpo!

Woot! Rafa WINS! :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: Brilliant. Goes to a GS final with no Djokovic or Federer in sight.

Sad for Potty tho'. But great tournament for him esp. knocking out Federer.

Delpo...... he played such a good first set and I thought we were in for a real corker. However, after Nadal lost the first set, he seemed to go into orbit and he played sustained spectacular tennis. It was one way traffic after that and it seemed as if Delpo may have been feeling it after all his previous big matches. I saw him shake out his right leg a few times at the change overs. Credit to Rafa for playing well when he had to. For me the lights are out on the men's tourney now, it has been a strange 2 weeks and the match of the tourney for me was the Delpo/Thiem match. I will of course watch the final, I would never miss a GS final! And I'm sure Jamie and Martina will give us lots to cheer for later!
