There will be a lot of new faces this year with Stan and Djoko out. Let us hope Andy can get better and make a push to be there.

With Andy likely to be taking the rest of the year off, it means we will have 4 new people at WTF. Cannot believe Stan, Kei, Novak and Andy will all not play again this year.

More likely 5 or 6 changes, Monfils has slumped this year and must be almost out of it and Raonic been injured also needs more points, only Two almost certain, Thiem and Cilic

Sash has just qualified in addition to Roger and Rafa. Dimi next on 3715, grigor on 3105 and Marin on 2995 look a fair bet to qualify and a semi win for Pablo C-B would raise him from 2595 to 3075 with Sam currently in the final spot on 2435, Goff currently first reserve on 2080 followed by berdych on 2005. However a semi win for Kevin would raise him from 1855 to 2335 into first reserve

A few in there I am not so interested in - Cilic, Kev and Sam for starters. Would love to see Goffin qualify of right.
I think I read, maybe one or two months ago, the BBC wouldn't be showing it anymore and some other channel had got the rights for it. But, I can't remember when it was going to happen.

Think bbc might have this year and 2018.
For those dreaming of seeing DelPo there a win in flushing meadows would put him on 2760 and knock Sam out of the current top8

Rafa, Roger,Sasha, Dimi, Marin qualified with Grigor as good as qualified that leaves 2 spots with David and Pablo currently in them followed by Sam and Kevin as the most likely challengers since quite a big gap after them. A Juan Martin masters win, could change that of course. Go Juan M!

easily on 3725 .....And Marin 3525...they're a little slow on there, Grigor 20 short on 3455, needing a snooker for him not to qualify

Delpo couldn't manage it which means he needs at least a semi in Paris, he has Zverov(4) and Dmitov(6) in his quarter. Looking like Pablo(8) could face Sam(10) in r16 with the loser not making it for sure, A QF probably enough for Goffin(7) to ensure he gets there but he will probably have to face Tsonga(11) in r16. Kevin(12) is in with Dimi(5)
going into Paris w1000 f600 sf360 qf180
7 Goffin 2895
8 Carreno Busta 2615
9 Querrey 2535

11 DelPo 2425
12 Tsonga 2320

Tsonga gone early as well, seeds dropping at some rate, Goffin almost there a win for him today and it would mean 2 of those below him need to both make final to catch him, only options to David and Pablo left standing are Delpo (at least SF, Sasha gone, but still Grigor in his Qtr) Pouille (at least F)while Isner and Bautista Agut both need to Win.
Gutted that tsonga's chance is up :( all on delpo now for me

Goffin is virtually there, the only way he doesn't go is If he loses his next match and Pouille beats Delpo in the final in which case they both go instead of him and Pablo who is far from being safe but could still get there,Delpo has the best chance , he will probably need to beat Dmitrov but obviously that is possible
RosieBear
02-11-2017, 08:45
C'mon Goffin. I want him to make the O2 so badly. He's a really wonderful player, but not as powerful as some so feel like he needs to take advantage of the many absentees this year. Also really like Dimi, would be nice to see him keep his composure and come through.
roytennisfan
02-11-2017, 12:05
DelPo into QF and back into top10, still just 20 points behind Pablo, must beat winner of Isner/Dmitrov at least. Also a threat to him from lower half but Pouille or Bautista Agut would need to win final.
http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/news/goffin-dimitrov-cilic-paris-2017-wednesday One more win for goffin later today against bennetau would seal it for goff. And as Roy says a win for delpo tomorrow
roytennisfan

So happy it won't be Isner (and that the defeat means he strays below Andy), final place down to Pablo and Jack with Pablo being reserve if Jack wins tomorrow.
Still hoping for jack to lose so delpo can be alternate and pablo can go through

2017 ATP Finals field:
Nadal, Federer, A Zverev, Thiem, Cilic, Dimitrov, Goffin, Sock.
Alternate: Carreno Busta.
Much depends on whether Rafa will play - it's still a question mark - and whether DelPo would be prepared to stay around as Alternate. I'm hearing that he's not happy to do that (someone on twitter) which is a shame 'cos there's a fair chance of getting a match.

I think it might stay in London whilst Andy Murray is still an active player ... and whilst Paris retains a Masters event Oct/Nov it's the most convenient place for the top 30 players (of whom any 8-10 would be in contention for the ATP Finals) to move on to.
London draws a LOT of international fans so whilst the line-up doesn't suit the British contingent on here it might work for those from other countries who happen to live in London/UK/across the Channel in Belgium/Austria ...

The current contract runs until 2020 by which point Andy and Novak are 33, Rafa 34 and Roger about 73. It's already nigh on impossible to get all 4 of them playing at the end of November, by 2021 it just isn't going to happen. Next week will be very interesting to see who actually does want to see Thiem v Sock or Goffin v Dimitrov etc. Just checked ticket availability, I can easily buy blocks of 8 tickets at any price level for any weekday session. We didn't previously have the luxury of waiting for the draw before buying tickets.
Another factor will be Men's Tennis switching to Amazon Prime in the UK which will surely reduce the overall exposure. Whilst I get the point about London being a diverse City that has excellent transport links to the Continent, does it really attract that many fan clubs outside of Fed or Rafa (or even JMDP)?
The Paris/London link was originally based on there being no rest week between the 2 tournaments. There now is so travel less of an issue. I wouldn't be at all surprised if London doesn't bid too hard when the next contract negotiations come up.

I hear what you're saying, Sir C, about box office power - the big 4 are in a league of their own. But in answer to your question, I'd love to watch Dimitrov v Goffin and if they meet I'll definitely try and get a ticket. After Andy, Dimi and especially Goffin and Thiem (along with Stan) are my absolute faves to watch. For me, Fed and Andy are dynamite to watch, but what really sets the the big 4 apart is not their game style but their mental strength which gets them through more big points/matches than the rest of the field. There's plenty of immensely watchable players outside the superstar names imo
exislander
06-11-2017, 17:32
I agree about other watchable players and I will say I thought it was very refreshing to watch the Paris final between two players who just got on with playing tennis without endless fidgeting, faffing and ball bouncing between points.

06-11-2017, 20:05
There weren't many supporting Thiem or Cilic last year but I see plenty coming from Belgium and Germany now they have representatives, Roger will pull in adoring crowds (as always) and also Rafa will of course, if he is fit. Some will go to support Sock, doubt Dmitrov will have much support, but still the different choices, mean people can see a number of new players. Now i've got used to Andy not being there, I see some potentially very good and entertaining matches. I also enjoy the doubles

Again, we have 7 Europeans taking part, just like last year, whilst that might change over a few years, Europe and in particular London, still has a strong draw, very popular with the players, also convenient, as it is so close to Paris

From Roys' post in the doubles thread.
Sunday OOP
12pm: Kontinen/Peers vs Harrison/Venus
NB 2pm Federer vs Sock
NB 6pm Rojer/Tecau vs Herbert/Mahut
NB 8pm Zverev vs Cilic
Monday OOP
12pm: Murray/Soares vs Bryan/Bryan
NB 2pm Thiem vs Dimitrov
NB 6pm Kubot/Melo vs Dodig/Granollers
NB 8pm Nadal vs Goffin
Just noticed on the fanzone part of the website, there doesnt seem to be any mention of the practice courts this year http://www.nittoatpfinals.com/en/fan-zone
The practice courts were reduced last year and the fanzone was smaller. They were doing building with the 02 entertainment complex so perhaps extending that has removed any room for open viewing courts. I guess we'll see on Sunday.
With regards to discussion of other players, there have been years when line op looks amazing only for guys to pull out last minute and you to end up with some dull matches. I've been going to the finals for years so I've seen my share. This year I am still glad I have tickets.
I think zverev will be interesting to watch live so he's the highlight of one group for me. Then goff and Raffa and theim in the other. Probably goff is th biggest highlight there for me but don't fancy his chances in Monday's match.
I think I'd sooner by in federers group, I could see both sock and zverev being nervous here and I don't see them being as big a challnage as Dimi or Dom. You'd have to imagine Feds place as leader of the group is pretty solid. I would love to see zverev make it through but it's a big ask. I'm excited anyway :)
First I was gutted when I knew Andy wouldn't make it ... then DelPo didn't qualify ... then the worry that Rafa might pull out ... I even put on my Facebook page "semi finals tickets anyone?!" after the last 2 in that list happened- a Federer fan I used to work with messaged me to say he'd love the tickets, not realising I was joking! ... but now I'm with you Jerry, I haven't seen any live tennis since Wimby and I miss it, so I'm excited whoever I get to see.

really entertaining match that was , sad tho , I wanted Thiem to win !!
Oh no, what a shame for Dimi - bring in hawkeye line calls, that was a travesty
That was one innovation at the Next Gen finals that I approved of!
I really think Rafa shouldn’t be allowed to play at the O2 when he knew he’d withdraw after one game (as Greg R said). Not fair on Goffin having to play him and Dimi and Dom don’t , also hard for Carrera Busta. Withdrawals from tournaments with an existing injury needs to be looked at.

So Rafa out. Not a massive surprise. Personally, I don't have an issue with his late withdrawal; injuries aren't entirely predictable and he wanted to give himself a chance. What I do take issue with though is him criticising Andy in the lead up the US, when all Andy wanted to do was give himself a chance to compete. People in glass houses and all that.

Goffin got to play a semi fit Nadal (and only scraped past). The other 2 get to play a fully fit PCB. Not sure which is easier, but I'd be surprised if Goffin got through this group even starting off with a win.
There were enough empty seats before this withdrawal, will look very bad for a couple of matches later this week I fancy.

There were empty seats but not that bad. Dimi had quite a lot of support. I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon and evening yesterday Andy or no Andy. There was some competitive tennis.
Yes it looked like all 4 matches were really competitive with lots of good rallies. Glad you had an enjoyable day

Peter Fleming in particular was complaining about the Evening Doubles taking far too long between points. Spectators haven't paid to watch players conversing with each other whilst cupping their hands over their mouths (Granollers/Dodig coming in for real criticism). He has a valid point and as a result, the points are becoming far too structured and less randomly entertaining. It wasn't a great match to watch.

Another good battle, this time between Sock and Cilic, which the American wins 5-7 6-2 7-6. I think the tournament has been very good so far, several hard-fought matches which is great because some years the group matches have been very flat.
I only managed to get home in time to see the last set but it was entertaining. Jack Sock seems to have 'come of age'. Held his nerve very well and certainly better than Cilic.held his. The 'get' from Sock at 3-4 down in the final set TB was amazing.

I did, though I wish Dom would have won. Sunday was good too. Cilic was annoying though, it felt like an age between every serve. Toe, tapping, ball bouncing, foot smacking, then stopping for. O reason as if something distracted him and started the whole thing again. He was almost as annoying today on tv! Glad sock got the win

Interesting and an entertaining battle but Sacha will kick himself for not capitalising on that 4-0 breaker lead after battling earlier , Fed kept fighting though. Looked bleak at break down but Zverev has recovered to lead 3-2 in 2nd even if still tough ask.

Really gutted was watching it on record. Which went off at 3-0 on the breaker for no reason and so I missed everything from them until 5-4 in the second. No idea what happened in between :(

Enjoying the match, not overly bothered who wins, enjoy both their styles. Probably leaning towards supporting zverev just because it keeps the group qualification scenarios a bit more open. The way zverev has played this third set suggests he still has difficulty sustaining level/ concentration consistently over longer matches ( I know he did v Cilic). This might explain his lack of success thus far in slams with matches being best of 5. Am sure it willl come with experience.
Oh Sascha! That looks pretty ominous now. The edge has gone out of this match now.
I think some of it is nerves and pressure getting to him. Same when he was broken for the second time in this set. He needs to relax but I guess some of that will come with age and experience. I feel for him though. He's had so many chances and made mistakes that he will have to shake off if he loses here, to be ready for the next round. Goff won his match that had moments like this so he doesn't have to kick himself. I was glad of that. I hope the same is true for sascha. Unforced errors need to come down though
Experience won out there. But if Sascha wins his next match he can still go through can't he? It's all good experience and a learning curve for him.

oh well unfortunately Sacha couldn't sustain the challenge in the 3rd and Fed just eased through, certainly Zverev has the prospects but shot selection and confidence not always the best, should improve with greater experience though.
Yeah he should as cilic and sovk would have both lost two. Hopefully he can beat sock :)

Sock v Zverev is essentially a QF with the winner going through to the semis.
The tennis has been far more competitive this year ironically as a result of the big guns not being there (or not being 100% - I'm pretty certain Fed is not fully fit). We've yet to have a one sided thrashing which has been the plague of the last couple of years.

I agree with you there. We were there yesterday both sessions. Sock v Cilic was surprisingly good and Federer is certainly not 100% - I suspect the back is still not right.
I do HATE the O2 as a venue though.....

I'm the opposite ... I wanted it to be the evening match so that I could watch it when I get home from work.
I agree with what everyone has said about this year's tournament, most of the matches have been very competitive. I have only seen the evening matches so far but have watched highlights of the afternoon sessions and it's been great. Amazingly I have seen it described by some on twitter as "the worst WTF ever" ... not sure what those people have been watching! I remember 2014 being the worst ever for one sided matches and that was when the big guns were all playing. Just goes to show ....
I'm looking forward to being there on Saturday .... but not looking forward to the Fed fans!

Not saying greatly surprised but still disappointed Sacha didn't get the W, Sock though generally dictating on most of the big points in a bit of topsey turvey and pretty entertaining match. Explosive shots and unpredictability may entertain but not really taken to him. Think Zverev felt the pressure and forehand/serve let him down at times. Whilst the potential not finished article yet and probably has felt a long season for him.

I'm well aware that Sascha is where he is because of absences, but then could the same not be said for Sock?
Agree, it can be said about numerous players, but my point was that if Sascha was a "genuine" no 3 and masters winner (as Andy and Novak were for years) then yep, I'd agree with the expectation that he would/should beat a player of Sock's calibre, but he isn't. He and Sock are obvs both top 10, going into the match their recent h2h was 1-1, an even match up, so Sock's win wasn't particularly surprising to me. I like young Sascha, but feel there's an awful lot of hype around him (not his fault, of course). It's a bugbear of mine - some folk can't bear the fawning over Fed but that doesn't bother me because at least he's earned it, but the hyping of youngsters nauseates me, I'm only really loving Dimi and his awesome talent more recently, now that the pundits have cooled it about him.

I'm not sure Sock so much as won it as Zverev lost it with his forehand and serve. He was desperately trying to keep rallies on the backhand, but as soon as Sock got the opportunity to switch it was ending the point. The final game I think saw 3 forehand errors and a double fault. That's not the standard in keeping of a World Number 3......although we may have been somewhat spoilt over the last decade.

Exactly. It's why I struggle to see him as genuine no 3 (but hasten to add absentees are obvs not his fault). Big potential, but still a ways to go in my eyes.

Zverev, as with a lot of the 'nextgen' players, is ok beating players of a similar type, but he doesn't have a 'plan B', to come up with some variety. As in the match between Thiem and Carreno Busta, Thiem had no other game than to hit harder. It worked in the 1st, didn't work in the 2nd and early in the 3rd, then he found his game in time. But he never tried anything different.

Yes agree, it's definitely not just young Zverev who needs to add variety. After Fed won Wimbledon this year he was asked why he was still reigning supreme at 36 yrs of age. The number one reason he gave for the next gen failing to break through was their predictability due to a lack of variation. Was good advice. Certainly not singling young Z out for criticism, I think a lot of them could benefit from greater variety.

On another note, sad to see Sascha being so hard on himself in the presser and saying he choked. Won't happen, but wish journalists and pundits would back off rather than act like future greatness is guaranteed. I know he has to handle pressure and expectation, but it's too much.

I find the one who seemingly has the biggest problem with pressure is Cilic. I'm not just referring to the Wimby final, but it seems any tight match he gets the tennis yips when he's serving. Also, he's played 3 matches this week, and lost all in the 3rd set, two of them from a set up.I almost hate to bring this up cos i don't want to seem like I'm taking advantage of his problem just to raise a point on here, but I find it strange he gets so tense, as he's such a level headed guy.

I have been enthralled this year even without Andy, milos and djoko. Even after nadal went out. There are a lot of great players at the top of the game, I love watching most of them. Cilic is still in my bad books for celebrating the ranking gained from monfils injury and not being humble on taking his ranking. Plus I don't feel he severed enough of a ban, though admittedly that isn't his decided by him. The foot tapping, bal bouncing, fake interruption and starting again was beyond a joke too. Great start by Goffin. I like both of these guys but supporting Goffin - well, we did share a hotel in Ghent so that's one reason, and he deserves a reward after duffing up Fed yesterday. Can't believe it's a year since I was in the o2 watching Andy lift the trophy
