OK, so I have a serious question to ask y'all. What are your thoughts on vaccinations? Yay or nay and why? I'm having a tremendous debate on facebook with some friends about it. I'm all for vaccinations, my friends are very much against and I'm afraid I'm losing.
I'm totally against, so I can't help you on that one.
RoastLamb
23-10-2011, 15:42
Why?
I simply don't think it's a good idea to deliberately inject diseases into your body, even in tiny doses. Who knows what problems they could cause.
RoastLamb
23-10-2011, 15:44
Yes but why? I'm so curious. I just assumed everyone saw the benefits of it and apparently people blame them on food allergies, asthma, attention deficit disorder and autism.
I was warned against the children having some of the vaccinations if there was epilepsy in the family. Apparently they can cause problems in that case. And yes, I do think that they can cause the sort of problems you've listed.
RoastLamb
23-10-2011, 15:48
Interesting. Hmmm, you can say that about any medication though. Not just vaccinations. I'm always asked in medical exams and eye exams if there's epilepsy in the family.
I simply don't think it's a good idea to deliberately inject diseases into your body, even in tiny doses. Who knows what problems they could cause.thats nuts (with respect) vaccines have saved far more lives than have been lost due to things going wrong
You might think that vaccinations are a good thing because, say, if everyone were vaccinated against measles then few people would catch it. But if you knew that there was a small possibility of something going wrong, would you have your own children vaccinated knowing that?

Well, I wouldn't risk my children's health by deliberately putting poison into them. Though I did let them have some vaccinations, the ones that had been around for years and seemed to be perfectly safe, but not the ones that there were doubts about.

I only wish they'd had chicken pox vaccine when I were a nipper coz that would mean no shingles now. And shingles is sooooo painful.
Because so many of these awful diseases have been eradicated due to vaccinations people forget how terrible it was.
As a chemistry graduate, I'm all for vaccinations of course. Drug research was what I wanted to do with my life when I was young and idealistic.
I'm also totally against the over-sterilised world that we live in that has led to the explosion in child asthma and allergies as we breed the immune system out of the human race.

They do that now - chicken pox parties. Shudder. They don't realize that if you get chicken pox you will probably get shingles when older and that is far worse than chicken pox. I got my kids the varivax vaccine as soon as it came out.
I was always being sent round to people with German measles in the hope that I would catch it, but I never did! :rolling:
I thought you got shingles if you hadn't had chicken pox? I had chicken pox but I've never had shingles (touch wood).

23-10-2011, 16:17
Nope it's the other way around. Once you get chicken pox you have the virus dormant in your system and it can erupt when you're older as shingles. I had chicken pox as a kid and I had shingles two years ago and that's what the doc told me.
Well, if you'd had the vaccine you'd still have the virus dormant in your system, wouldn't you?!

Vaccines are composed of dead viruses not live ones.
That's not true - vaccines do contain live viruses.
The more common modern vaccines are attenuated vaccines.

It not flu or cold. It like feeling bit sick, can't smell food without feeling sick, whole body feel bad and feel really lazy like I can't be bothered do that. I had the mumps when I was 5 and chicken pox when I was 15 but never had the measles. Very rarely hear of anyone having measles these days. My dad had the shingles and he said it was the worst pain ever!!!
My youngest had chickenpox at 2 months and shingles at 9 months. Fortunately, at that age, apart from a high temperature she was neither up nor down with either. The doctors had never seen shingles in a child never mind a baby before but tests confirmed it.
I had measles when I was five (very badly, it went to my eyes), chickenpox at 6 and mumps at 7. Never caught German measles or Scarlet Fever, despite being sent to play with kids who had them. My kids had measles and chickenpox when they were very small (Caz was only a baby). They also had a very bad cough that lasted a long time that the nursery insisted was whooping cough, though the doctor didn't confirm that it was.

Minnie had chickenpox at 18 months and shingles at 9 or 10 I think - we've had quite a few cases of shingles in kids at the nursery - I think because the kids are getting chickenpox so much younger, and then are being exposed to it again next time around and getting shingles.
I'm all for vaccination - when Minnie was getting her TB jab earlier in the year (which is no longer given routinely in Scotland, only to special cases who have had parents/grandparents born in one of the countries on their list - my Mum was born in Kenya), I was told that she still didn't need to have it because the instances of TB in this country (ie Scotland) are so low .... I made the point that it's because we were all vaccinated - it's only been the last 5 years or so they've not been vaccinating and I'm aware that TB is on the rise elsewhere in the UK .... despite the vaccinations taking place there ....
My brother and family are just home from holiday in the Caribbean and were recommended to get a heap of vaccinations before they went for them and the kids - they did it ... and I'm glad they did because I heard of someone who'd been to the same place who didn't get vaccinated and ended up with Typhoid.
The link between MMR and autism has never been completely proved - yes there have been possible cases, and they say that there's a link, but I didn't hesitate to get my daughter vaccinated - there can be side effects of all sorts of things but the vast majority sail through these jabs with no problems - Minnie is getting the HPV vaccine at the moment - had her first jab last month, 2nd one next month and 3rd one in the spring - article in today's paper about girls suffering from all sorts of problems as a result of the vaccine but I still wouldn't stop her getting it because I think if it can save her from a horrible disease it's worth the risk of her being one of the tiny percentage affected by side effects.
Yes, you have to weigh up the pros and cons in each case. The HPV vaccine (which of course is new, so Caz never had the opportunity to have it) seems to be a good idea as so many young girls are dying of cervical cancer these days. I'm really against the MMR jab, though, because that is three live viruses put into your system all at once, and the individual diseases are normally not too bad - as has been said above, when we were young we were all sent to play with kids who had them so that we could get those diseases over and done with whilst we were young!

Thank you. I've just read up on that and the chicken pox/shingles debate. I remember my doctor telling me that if someone who hadn't had c-p touched a shingles blister they could get c-p but not vice versa.
Anyway, my brother works for the pharm industry and here's what he says about vaccines:
Vaccinations are not evil and the side effects are rare. Without vaccination things like small pox, polio and rabies would continue to create havoc among the entire world killing or maiming big parts of the world population. But in the past some vaccination did garner bad press. Some vaccines can only be given as 'attunated' i.e. a weak form of the virus or bacteria is given.....this can produce fever but that is better than dying from the disease! There was a bad problem in the 1930s in the states when polio virus was not weakened enough. Many people got very bad polio from the vaccination. But in the main vaccines are very safe. I have been vaccinated many times. Vaccination is better than trying to treat disease with drugs.

My daughter is getting the HPV vaccine next year. I know there is a lot of controversy over that one because of the sexually-transmitted virus it protects against. But it causes cancer and that's all I care about. Also, my friend is upset at the fact her son is getting the hep B shot when that is sexually-transmitted too. And she also doesn't believe in getting the flu shots either.
My daughter's grade just got the hepatitis and the meningitis shots. However, she and my other daughter already got the hepatitis shots before they went to India in 2006 (no side effects). Jane, did Minnie's school provide the men. one too?
In England, the 'flu jab is only offered to the elderly, as they are most at risk. The rest of us just have to put up with getting the 'flu. But as it's a different strain every year, so you have to have a new jab every year, I don't think I'd bother anyway.
I've been really surprised when people tell me that they had all manner of shots before going to Egypt or India - I've been to both and didn't have any shots at all. Didn't have anti-malaria drugs either (which can also cause all sorts of problems).

I think they're very close to getting a malaria vaccine which makes me happy.
Over here in Canada everyone is encouraged to get the annual flu shot if we want. It's optional but paid by the gov't. My brother told me that even if the flu shot isn't 100% the right strain it will still protect us to a certain degree and so if we do get the flu it will be milder. I'd do anything to avoid the flu.

We can get the flu jab if you have a medical condition eg. asthma.
interesting discussion . Im in favour of vaccines as well . As someone already said , you have to weigh the pros - cons , however if vaccination were to stop , and these diseases made a comeback which they would , people would be crying for vaccines after seeing how horrible some of them can be . Have any of you ever seen a baby or young child with whooping cough ?
When the swine flu came about I got the vaccine because everyone else around me was afraid of it , so I figured I better get it in case they all got sick Id be there to take care of them . Alot of conspiracy theories surrounding vaccines . My sons girlfriend told me I might die from the H1N1 vaccine , but I was just fine and am still here.
Yes but why? I'm so curious. I just assumed everyone saw the benefits of it and apparently people blame them on food allergies, asthma, attention deficit disorder and autism.
I think you have to weigh up the pros and cons when taking vaccines. Is the risk of having the vaccination worse than the risk of what you are vaccinating against if you catch it? I suppose having ME I come across lots of people who have been made worse from vaccinations, especially the hepatitus B one, but that does not mean that all are unsafe. And I would not go near the flu vaccination, as it often makes people with ME feel much worse so if I remember I get the homeopathic one, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't (but I often forget to take it). I think some people say the problem with some vaccines (eg MMR) and autism is the mercury etc in the vaccination (its possible that people with autism cannot handle mercury well) rather than the important part of the vaccine. That is what really bugs me - why they need to add toxic substances in the vaccine. I am all for spreading vaccinations out rather than overloading the immune system all at once too.
Here in Canada there has been an outbreak of measles in the 14 - 15 yr old agegroup , so now the vaccination schedule is being reviewed. They are thinking it may be better to delay it a bit .
RoastLamb
23-10-2011, 19:12
They've taken the mercury (thimerosal) out of vaccines - since 2001. (Yet autism lives on - it'll be interesting to see the debate on this in a decade's time.) But my niece just told me (and she's a pharmacist grad) that some vaccines have minute amounts of peanut oil in them, which may explain why some people link them to food allergies.
Cazza, I think you're absolutely right. Some people just can't tolerate vaccines for whatever reason, underlying medical condition, etc. This is not a black and white topic, so much gray as well.

You mean, because getting it as a baby is too soon as it wears off by the time you're a teen? I didn't know that; I assumed it was for life.

There are probably other toxic things besides thimerosal in some vaccines though.
Some environmental docs in USA (eg Yasko) are now finding biochemical problems with methylation in patients with autism and there are some very positive anecdotal reports of people being helped with treatments - I reckon that will be an area to watch. And they are now finding methylation problems in people with ME/CFS too (including me), which is why I know about it. You need methylation to work properly to get rid of toxins and heavy metals.

Yup, I found out last year that I have a genetic abnormality which means that I cannot utilise folic acid properly (so I need to take methylfolate plus vit B12 and not take folic acid in supplements) - apparently possibly up to 10% of the population have this abnormality - often people with illnesses such as autism, ME, MS etc. But people with autism often have several genetic abnormalities, not just one.
That's interesting - I didn't know that folic acid could be harmful for some people - it's routinely given in pregnancy. I was prescribed it then and also at other times as I have a tendency towards anaemia.
RoastLamb
23-10-2011, 19:44
So Cazza, do you think that vaccines can cause autism in children who have such genetic abnormalities? If so, I wonder if kids should be screened before being vaccinated?
That's interesting - I didn't know that folic acid could be harmful for some people - it's routinely given in pregnancy. I was prescribed it then and also at other times as I have a tendency towards anaemia.
Its only above a certain amount of supplemented folic acid that is harmful to certain people (400 ug I believe), so I guess the supplements they prescribe are less than this. I was told natural folic acid in vegetables is not so bad as it is in the folinic acid form.
So Cazza, do you think that vaccines can cause autism in children who have such genetic abnormalities? If so, I wonder if kids should be screened before being vaccinated?
Dunno. There are so many factors it gets so complex and its quite a new area. These genetic tests can be expensive too - and they are not mainstream medicine so have to be paid for.
So Cazza, do you think that vaccines can cause autism in children who have such genetic abnormalities? If so, I wonder if kids should be screened before being vaccinated?
OK then, if you have anyone in the family who could possibly be described as having an autistic spectrum disorder (which never used to be diagnosed - partly the reason for the apparent rise in cases) eg someone who is particularly geeky, then you should definitely not have your kids vaccinated.

No - but I think there was a meningitis booster a few years ago - I really can't remember - poor girl's had so many jabs - but she still doesn't have any bad scars like we ended up with after the Smallpox jab - and I heard from a friend that she didn't get that one because of eczema - apparently it could cause a severe reaction to folk with exzema so she didn't get it.

Those pains could all be related; stomach problems can be felt/affect the shoulder area (trapped 'wind' can cause shoulder pain) so you might find your stomach bug has affected more than just your tum! Hope you feel better soon SG - nagging back pain is sooooooo miserable. Perhaps you're a bit run down at the mo' which is making your body susceptible to other problems?
SG- Hope you are feeling a little better today. Here are some :grouphug: to you from across the ocean. Wish i could send you some warmth :surfing:to make you feel better. How about some :flowers: and :wino: instead. Get well soon :)

Anyone got any tips on which skincare products I could use?
Needing a good skin cleanser, moisteriser for my skin. In my thirties now but have problems with spots, breakouts etc and my skin can get oily but also dry in areas. Tried tons of stuff but nothing is suitable.
Have you tried stuff for sensitive skins that is free of fragrances and nasty chemicals? E.g. green people, neways?
VamosVixs

Never heard of them??
Green people - http://www.greenpeople.co.uk/
Neways are often sold by complementary health practitioners and is a pyramid type thing, but good quality - you'd need to ask around for a local distributor - I use their shampoos.
I know people who have had problem skin who have stayed in my house for a bit and used these types of products and their skin has improved a lot. In fact someone's skin improved a lot with Simple products but they still have a few nasties in.

I like the look of the green people website. May try something from there.
Not sure about their moisturisers, but I use shower gel from www.nakedbodycare.co.uk (http://www.nakedbodycare.co.uk) as i had a dry itchy back all the time. Google suggested that a lot of people are allergic to sodium laureth sulphate (check the labels its in nearly every shower gel and shampoo) so I found some without it and hey presto, 10 months on my skin has never felt better!
Hope you're feeling better SG - nothing worse than back or other types of joint pain. No one can see the problem, so they often wonder what all the fuss is about. I've got lower back and a right hip problem which has stopped me playing golf, maybe for ever and at worst means I can scarcely put one foot in front of the other. Just back from 12 days in Portugal and I have to say that the dryness and warmth definitely seems to help. Am doing pilates, having chiro treatment periodically and the rest of the time take painkillers, which I hate doing if I can avoid it. Hey ho, the joys of getting older........
Poor SG & Pabbers  - back problems are horrible things.
Sorry to hear of your back & hip problem, Pat. I hope you had a nice holiday?

Thanks for kind messages everyone. Yes. I'm back on having endured a really bad week. The pain was agonising when I moved. So much so that slept upright in armchair for three nights as I simply couldn't get in or out of bed. It was as if I needed something to click into place. Well it's been the half term from hell this week. Kids all off, parents coming to stay and lovely things planned, then I go and get struck down with one of the worst throat infections I've ever had :ill:! On the plus side, having my parents here was such a great help as Thursday and Friday, I barely left my bed. They looked after the kids and took them out etc. I'm on antibiotics but it's slow to shift and I'm still not quite ready to face the world.Guess it will take a few days but the throat is easing and I don't feel like I'm swallowing razor blades anymore. Ibuprofen is better (than Paracetamol) because it reduces inflammation and dulls the pain.
Also you could try rubbing some Bonjela onto the gums which might give a bit of relief.
Emergency dentist?
olbas oil, stinks but will numb the tooth

I get occasional problems with a wisdom tooth, and I find Solpadeine best - use the soluble ones - two tablets dissolved in a small glass of water, and rather than just drinking it, swill it round your mouth, especially where the problem tooth is, before you swallow. It tastes foul, but it does help.
You can also get stuff called Orajel - kind of like a grown-up version of bonjela - it's an anaesthetic gel which dulls the pain for a while. There are two versions, one for mouth ulcers and one for toothache, but I find them equally good. You should be able to get them in any pharmacy.
Hope it improves soon - toothache is horrible!

Solpadeine is paracetamol, codeine & caffeine - if you think you can't take that, try soluble paracetamol instead - with any pain in soft tissue, like inflamed gums round a sore tooth, the soluble stuff really does work better.

Thanks for advice ladies, still killing me found some clove oil but think its out of date, I wish I could take something stronger but due to other medication I am limited to paracetomol or my migraine tablets :(
Here's an update
Went back to the doctor today. Have now got very high strength anti-inflammatories as well as some capsules to protect my stomach against them. Also some hydrocortisone cream for the rash on my swollen eyelids. Still hoping to be fit to travel to MC.
Gosh Linda - I had really strong anti-inflamms for my hip and the stomach pills. On the up side I think they dampened my appetite a bit! Are you dead set against things like physio/chiropractor? With the SI joint it often gets kind of hitched up (a bit like being caught in the wrong cog) and a bit of manipulation can put it back in the right place. That's what happened with me at any rate.
Fingers crossed for MC
I'm not against trying other treatments, but I told the doctor about needing to be able to travel to MC and he said not to do anything else before then in case it makes it worse in the short term. He said just to rest it.
Do hope it settles down Linda. The discomfort is very wearing I know.

I have just made some raw chocolate:):) to keep me going. Doubt it would make my voice come back though.

Have a stinking cold. My other half has had it from the weekend and I was all smug, until yesterday when it hit. Good timing in a way though, don't want to be ill for O2 and I have a trip end of november.

I am just recovering from that myself. Started off with a sore throat last Thursday which lasted all weekend and then the cold hit me on Sunday so stayed in my bed that day as had to work on Monday. Feel I am over the worst now although have an awful headache today, typical not feeling 100% now that I am on holiday.

Horrible isn't it? Had my flu jab last week too although I'm sure the 2 aren't connected. D&V is also doing the rounds at work and I know which I'd rather have!

Can't believe this....Woke up this morning in agony. The pain stemmed from my elbow and it was extremely painful to move my right arm. OK if I keep it close to my body but if I stretch it!!!! Have been stretching it and in the shower ran hot water on area for ages. Have just taken pain killers but it is still very painful. It has been suggested that it is tennis elbow but as I've never experienced this before I don't really know. Nothing wrong last night so am a bit perplexed. Going to chill out on sofa now. See you all later. Hope everyone who has been under the weather feels better soon.
Crumbs, SG. I've had tennis elbow but my memory of it is that I had no strength in that arm and couldn't pick anything up - my grip was almost non-existant and it hurt to put weight on it. What have you been doing that could have caused it? In my case the last time was after I'd been shopping (for a very heavily beaded but gorgeous evening dress :shamed:) and had to carry the bag it was in over my arm with my wrist facing upwards and the bag over the join where my elbow is, if you see what I mean. I was carrying it like that for about 30 mins and I think that's what did it (the bag handles were too long to carry it normally and my other hand was full).

Thank pabbers and Jeannie. Well, as far as I can remember I haven't done anything to bring this on. As I said it was fine yesterday and just woke up in agony. All I have done since returning from holiday is the usual. Doing laundry (machine), using the vacuum cleaner etc etc. Nothing really strenuous. It seems a little easier now but still painful when I stretch out the arm. Have to lift things like a full kettle with left hand and there are a couple of private inconveniences which I will leave to your imagination.:shamed:;)
feel better everyone whose under the weather .
There are alot of viruses going around where I am , Ive been lucky so far , and feeling good. My daughter was quite sick with a chest cold / infection last week . Horrible stuff !!
Maureen , try and keep the heat on it , and stretching will help.

What's good for helping a sore throat that feels swollen (got a lot of mucus stuck in sinuses and throat - gross I know). It's most annoying and not sleeping well because of it, had this for a few days now but can't seem to shift it.
