Well done Andy! You went for it. As a retired Midwife /Nurse who used to be involved in that kind of surgery I know it was a very brave decision.

All the best as you recover and go into rehab.
Lots of love

Thank you, Teresa. Interesting - not an endorsement of the resurfacing procedure as opposed to hip replacement but possibly right for Andy at this point. I had pins put in my left hip 25 years ago and have had no problems whatsoever although I was told at the time that I would probably need hip replacement in 10/15 years; fingers crossed, the pins will see me out (78 this year)! I hated to think of Andy in so much pain so pleased he has taken this course of action. x

Brilliant news! Hopefully he will now have pain free days and can make his own decision as to his future. Best of luck Andy x

Here's to Andy having a better quality of life and, if we see him play again, that will be an added bonus.

I am glad he has had this done and hopefully will be able to enjoy more pain free life in the future. I'm thinking hmm, five months till Wimbledon? I know, wishful thinking but this is Andy!

Pleased to hear Andy has now had the hip resurfacing and hopefully a posiitive outcome, with much better quality of life whether or not he can return to the professional tour. To me Wimbledon at least looks doubtful and not sure if advisable. Know Bob Bryan returned in 5 months but far more challenging for singles. With regards to the future Andy with advice will be best placed to make the decision .

It's the best news. Wishing him a pain free and speedy recovery. Wonder who did the op. Never thought he'd fly abroad for it as family visits and indeed travel home would be difficult. Maybe a team flew out to London.......

I wondered the same as I thought he might go with Bob Bryan's surgeon. Having said that we have plenty of excellent orthopod surgeons in the UK.

My phone beeped with his instagram message when I was in a meeting this morning. As soon as I saw it was Andy, I knew this would be the news. So pleased he has gone for it.

There seem to be differing reports on where the operation was done. Some reports say it was done in London and some say it was done by a surgeon named Max Fehily at his clinic in Manchester. Andy said it was London though and he should know!

I caught it this morning on BBC1 where they showed us the xray of his hip and you could clearly see the work that was done.
And the shadow of the metal parts as per the diagram on here of resurfacing.
Although something showed up as a bright mark on the other hip joint and the presenter said "you can clearly see the new plate
where that bright white mark is. I thought what a wally. It's the other hip. She either didn't see the metal bits on the right hip or
thought it was how all hips are. Having said that they said it was his right hip and the bright mark was on the right hip on the xray.
The xray either inverted or Andy was lying on his front. LOL

Anyway Andy "Once more into the breach" Good luck buddy I wish you all the best along with everyone on here.

Adding my very best wishes to Andy too. Agree with all the comments on here. First and foremost, the whole point of the op was to, in Andy's words, "be the end of my pain." Bottom line. If that is achieved, and we all sincerely hope it will be, it'll have been a success. If anything else positive comes out of it that will be an absolute bonus. Let's give him time to recuperate and rest before we start talking about a return to tennis, especially Wimbledon and especially this year.

I agree with you all. I'm happy that he's had the op done and can now focus on recovery. We can wait and see what happens from now, but I'm glad that he will be able to hopefully enjoy life relatively pain free.

Andy definitely said he had it done in London. Fehily was interviewed on the news but I just took him to be a random hip expert. He certainly didn't speak about Andy as though he had intimate knowledge of him or the op.

Harsh lesson for Connor Thomson in Glasgow qualifying as Aidan McHugh embarks on new numbers game
https://www.thenational.scot/sport/17442016.harsh-lesson-for-connor-thomson-in-glasgow-qualifying-as-aidan-mchugh-embarks-on-new-numbers-game/

The 18-year-old is signed to Andy Murray’s 77 Sports Management Agency and when he completed a week’s training with the Scot out in Miami in December, everything seemed rosy. Three months later Murray is resting up after a second hip operation - one which will alleviate pain he feels in the joint and either prolong his career or end it for good. “I went out early with Andy and started in Miami at Crandon Park, I was there with him for four or five days then I went to IMG for the British camp,” said McHugh. “Andy was working away as normal back then, he was looking good, moving really well, a high level in the practices and I really enjoyed it. But I think he was just in too much pain. I don’t know how long it takes to recover, before he can start training again. But hopefully he does – it would be great.”

I couldn't post this in the newspaper thread as it is closed???

“I’m a lot happier now because I have no pain in my hip anymore. The rehab has been slow but going pretty well. If it’s possible I’d certainly love to compete again.” Murray was at @TheQueensClub (https://twitter.com/TheQueensClub) to announce a new partnership with Castore.

Great to hear that @andy_murray (https://twitter.com/andy_murray) is pain-free after his hip operation. Rehab going "pretty well", if "slow". Hopes to come back but doesn't know yet if he will be able to. "If it's possible, I'd certainly love to compete again,". Good to see him happy.

Good to see Andy sounding positive, but we will obviously need to see how things develop and if it is possible to play again. Great that he is indeed pain free as had been mentioned before and main reason for having operation.

Special edition of the tennis podcast last night featuring Andy's presser yesterday at Queens:

http://po.st/TP514

* Only 5 weeks after the op, and he is already spending up to 4 hours training...physio, pool, weights, cardio etc. Wow!

*Does 40 minutes of walking everyday on a special machine to improve his gait. A limp is still his automatic way of walking even though he has no pain. It's almost like learning to walk again.

*He may play doubles, but basically only to test where he would be and to use it as a stepping stone into the singles. It's not a long term goal for him.

Edit ** And oh, I forgot to add one last thing: and this is so Andy...he chose a female surgeon because she was honest and upfront with him.

Overheard a nice little story on my train journey today....two elderly couples were on the train, sounded like they had been for a day out. One of the men was telling the other couple about his dodgy hip. He said he had been walking with a stick for the last four years and had kept putting off having an op but now he's having the resurfacing op. "Just like Andy Murray had- if he can run around a tennis court with it, I will be able to do everything I need to". What made it even nicer was he used to play a lot of tennis when he was younger. "I might be able to take it up again when I've had the op".

Had to stop myself from reaching across the aisle to give him hug. How lovely that Andy has inspired him to go ahead with the op

incidentally, i think Andy has had 2 operations - the first in Australia was a hip resurfacing, which did not work for any length of time; and then a second in London, to replace his own hip ball with a metal ball hammered into his femur and introduced into the socket, which is part of the pelvis I think. this is all in Resurfacing, worth a watch.

Sorry he did not have his hip resurfaced in Australia, it was a minor op where they just scrape away the rough bits, but then this didn’t really help so he went for hip resurfacing which is putting metal in the socket and metal on the hip, which is a major op, although not a complete hip replacement.

yes, that's what i thought.
but Andy has had 2 ops, the first (after he spoke to a surgeon in Australia) was a McMinn type resurfacing, which seemed to fail quite soon, and then a replacement hip joint, which is in place now.

Harriet, Andy hasn't had a replacement hip joint - see Mickeys' earlier correct response to you copied in above.

He has had RESURFACING - hence the title of his film of the same name.
