What a frustrating day! First ITV4 stuck with the women's match so I didn't see the start of the match. Then at the first rain delay I decided to take the dog for a walk. When I got back the players were leaving the court for the second time. Of course I am at work tomorrow so won't be able to watch. :)

Good to see Schwartzman doing this well though of course question is if he can sustain it, however does get first break in 2nd!

Whatever the outcome of this match, it is still fun to watch Diego.

I record the whole day every day and then watch when I can later. It's easy to avoid scores by avoiding anything relevant. At least ITV doesn't change channels at vital point and you find your recording changes to Antiques Roadshow whist they put Wimbles etc on red button - we have that to look forward to Haha

Del Potty has won the first set on a tiebreaker. Would quite like Del Potty to win but I put Cilic in my pickem and TFF as I wasn't sure if Del Potty would still be injured at the start of the tournament.

Rafa taken the second set and racing ahead in the third set.

Poor Diego , but what can you do, Rafa too good.

I have to say it was refreshing to watch a player who didn't feel the need to make a loud noise every time he hit the ball!

Catching up .... thought it beepin typical that the one day I got in early yesterday, it rained so there was no tennis for me to watch! And now now those matches on today when I'm at work
I watched the brilliant tie break the day before on catch up but only when I know the result .... work gets in the way of tennis far too often for my liking!!

Disappointing but much as I expected, pity Diego couldn't extend Nadal further but by all accounts the 10 times champion was just too strong. Schwartzman certainly took it to Rafa but crucially couldn't quite sustain the momentum yesterday.

Delpo on verge of winning this match if he can hold his serve.
If it had not of been for first rain delay I feel that the match of Nadals would have ended much closer and Nadal may have even lost it. I wish the commies didnt gush about him so much they are treating him like a certain other player and its nauseating. I know he is King of Clay but still

Delpo through to play Rafa in semi which I think will produce overall winner. Would love Domi to come through from other side, after 3 French sf think he's ready to reach final but not necc win it, esp if he faces Rafa.

oop is not up on the Roland Garros site, but oop for tommorrow is

12.00 noon - Cecchinato vs Thiem

not before 2.30 pm - Nadal vs Del Potro

JAMES4578
08-06-2018, 12:58
Became dramatic and tense breaker but Dom finally takes it 12-10 , that snatched volley earlier made it much tougher and Marco put him under pressure-well done! Seems Ceccchinato has little left, double break for Thiem at 4-0 in 3rd.

RosieBear
08-06-2018, 13:24
Big congrats to Dom on first slam final  was sure this day would come ever since I first saw him against Andy in Rotterdam six years ago. It'll be a massive ask to get past Rafa or even Delpo in his first final, but I'll be cheering Dom all the way.

Well done to Cecchi on an amazing and highly entertaining run - a really stylish and fun player

JAMES4578
08-06-2018, 13:43
Certainly entertaining semi though fizzled out somewhat in 3rd, however credit to Dom for a great performance overall and asserted himself after 2nd even if Marco was a bit tired.:clap: Will be tough ask in final but certainly proved himself and hopefully can play at high level. Think would give him reasonable chance against DelPo but don't think it's likely Argentine will get there. Certainly Cecchinato was revelation during event and hopefully can build on it.

Sorry for Delpo and hope he will play well at Wimbledon.

08-06-2018, 20:39
As semi finals go, the Rafa/Delpo match was pretty tame. Disappointing and I'm sorry Delpo couldn't put up a better fight. But to get as far as the SF's....not bad. So after all the speculation and match forecasting, it's Rafa and Domi. Did anyone call that? Rafa yes, but it was always going to be interesting as to who would join him. Hoping for an exciting match regardless of who wins, though I will be calling for Domi!

Rafa on fire. Can't see Don even getting a set. Oh well... I've enjoyed the tournament anyway.

That's interesting you say that because I am feeling the opposite. I think Thiem will pummel Rafa. He's so fast and quick and I think he'll flummox Rafa by taking his precious time away. So I hope that Rafa is prepared. I think Potty just gave up after the first set. Not sure why because he said afterwards he wasn't injured, but it was pretty disappointing tbh.

Josephine
08-06-2018, 22:53
Sure Rafa will win but do hope Thiem at least makes a battle of it.

Just a bit boring and very noisy watching Rafa win all the time. Mind you talking of noise Halep is dreadful in that area but I am still supporting her to get her first GS.

Genbrit
09-06-2018, 00:01
I think Thiem has a chance if he doesn't let nerves get to him as its a grand slam final. Rafa had so many break points against him today, Del Po just couldn't convert them. I really thought DelPo wasn't 100% and once he lost the first set, didn't think he would be able to go 4 or 5 sets.

Linda
09-06-2018, 08:09
I think it will be a real battle and the result will mostly depend on the weather. If it's hot and dry and sunny Rafa will win, but if it's damp and humid as it was the other day then Thiem will win.

karanga
09-06-2018, 08:40
I haven't watched all of Rafa's matches this year but from what I have seen it seems to me that Rafa is not playing as well as he has in past years.

The forecast for tomorrow in Paris is for thundery showers and breezy. This is not the sort of weather that will suit Rafa who thrives in hot, sunny and calm weather.

Dominic has beaten Rafa three times on clay so I'm backing him to cause a major upset and win the title.

This is Dominic's best chance of winning a grand slam and, although I'm a huge fan of Rafa, I hope he will come on court confident, have a great game plan, and win RG to follow in the footsteps of another great Austrian clay courter, Thomas Muster.

Loving all this hope for Dom. I think he's wonderful and would *love to be proved wrong*, but just do not see him getting past Rafa. For me, it's not weather that will make the difference, but experience and in that respect they worlds apart when it comes to gs finals especially French ones. Maybe he could do a Kvitova and blast his way through his first major final, but having followed him closely for a long time I really don't think that is his temperament. He was horribly nervous and flat against Sascha in the Marid final despite a great h2h with him. I want Dom to learn from Madrid and go out there and do himself justice, anything more than that is a bonus. GO DOMI, GO>GO>GO! :cheer::cheer::cheer:

GSM Nadal! Rafa too good, simple as that so :trophy: So happy for Dom reaching his first slam final and playing it well. No doubt in my mind that he's the true heir apparent and will be getting his hands on a major sooner rather than later.

Well done Nadal on winning 11th French title, some achievement! Whilst a bit closer than the score would suggest was disappointed he wasn't pressed more, though not really surprised. Still many hotly contested exchanges and enjoyable for most part! Dom certainly played pretty well in 1st slam final but a crucial times came up a bit short though Rafa was so tough and in tremendous form. Doubt it would've changed outcome but match may have taken on slightly different route if Thiem had managed to prolong 1st set, a TB for instance would've been interesting. Anyway still step forward for Dom which he should build on .

Hmmmm well 11 trophies on this particular court, perhaps he deserves it, no? Very tough achievement.

I thought Thiem played very well and I'm surprised he didn't even win a set. But he'll get better and I bet he beats Rafa this time next year should they be in the final together.

I've just finished watching the recording of the match and I managed to avoid the result beforehand! Domi certainly didn't let himself down in his first GS final, he gave it everything, but some of Rafa's responses were simply breathtaking. I'm sure Domi thought he had already won some of those points, but the ball kept on coming back to him! Over and over! And like others, could hardly believe my ears at what Rosewall said! Loved Domi's speech; clearly Kiki Mladenovic will be giving him French lessons as he promised he would speak French if he was on the podium again! Hard to believe Domi was only 11 when Rafa won his first French open title. And now on to the best bit of the whole year: the grass court season.....

You cannot stop for treatment or evaluation if you have cramp. Meant to wait until change of ends. Remember Ferrer in Miami against Andy - he didn't walk off to chair in middle of game.

The Ken Rosewall thing was unfortunate ... I don't think for one moment that he meant that how id sounded, I think he meant "disappointed" rather than "disappointing". Lots of people slating him on twitter including Laura Robson ... he's an 80 year old tennis legend who probably needs to be given the benefit of the doubt here IMO. Sometimes though a player can start to feel pain without knowing what it, or the cause, is so the only 'safe' option is to stop playing and ask for evaluation at the very least rather than play on and cause a possible injury e.g. muscle strain to become much worse. I've seen Rafa carry on playing with a leg that was cramping but this seemed a much less obvious reason for the problem with his fingers/wrist initially. So, I don't blame him for wanting to check it out and FWIW I don't think it was gamesmanship on Rafas' part.

Completely agree Sally. As soon as he was assessed he was straight back out there and only had treatment at change of ends.
