So annoyed about that, as I have Sky Sports and they are not covering the US Open!! :grrr: :crying:

Sky Sports have not covered the Us Open for a few years now but it was on Eurosport, may be frustrating but was announced a while ago now. Issue with Amazon is that internet streaming is always slightly behind and whilst the quality was fine for Eastbourne not quite the same standard as Tv broadcasts.
Ooops - I had forgotten that I had watched on Eurosport (part of my Sky package) so perhaps they will have it again - here's hoping!!

Unfortunately Amazon prime have 5 year deal for UK and Ireland, though Eurosport still have the rights for the rest of Europe.

Have doubts about this , however have contacted Eurosport to see if they can confirm either way.
In a few days time Eurosport listings will cover the time of the start of the tournament, so I guess we will know then.
When Sky did not show it last year and Eurosport did, I have a vague recollection that Eurosport had had the rights for a few years and Sky had paid them to show the US Open.

I would love it if Eurosport covered the USO. I was going to take the opportunity of the 30 day free Prime trial, but if Eurosport Player live stream the matches, I would prefer that and I could then use my 30 day trial next year. It's the time delay on Amazon that bothers me. However I have a few reservations about the choice of words from Eurosport:
1. "Follow all the matches at the US Open live with Eurosport".....It says "follow", not watch. Does that mean live reports rather than streaming the matches?
2. "Eurosport offers you the possibility of following all the matches at the US Open live on Eurosport Player."…"possibility"? and "following" again?
Am I reading too much into this?
Have doubts about this , however have contacted Eurosport to see if they can confirm either way.
Look forward to their reply James.

I've had word back from Eurosport and as I suspected not the best news:
Thank you for contacting the Eurosport Player support.
From your email, I understand that your question is about the US Open broadcast.
After verification, I inform you that the US Open will be broadcasted all over the EU except for the UK. I invite you to check the schedule section on our website and application to know on what time is it scheduled.
I hope this clarifies the situation for you and do not hesitate to get back to me shall you have any further questions.
Maybe we should tell them off for putting an article on the uk website saying they are covering it. Must have just posted the European wide one.
Thank you James. It's now looking like it will have to be the 30 day free Amazon trial for the USO!!

Saw giant US Open on Prime adverts on the London Tube this week with big giant picture of Andy. They are obviously very proud to be showing it.
So we have to be up at silly o'clock to watch on Amazon? Presumably no record facility?

Bad news is that ATP tournaments will be exclusive to Amazon Prime as well.
https://www.atpworldtour.com/en/news/atp-atp-media-expand-partnership-with-amazon-prime-video
this is appalling. and while we grieved that the fans of the Davis Cup have been shopped to a wealthy footballer are we now resigned to allowing the richest man in the world to control all our experience of tennis? (Jeff Bezos, CEO and founder of Amazon, current wealth $150 billion, pays minimal tax in UK)

This was from Nov 2017 so not exactly much to be done now.
I was just about to say, this was agreed ages ago! i said at the time I thought it was a real shame that the only way to watch will be via streaming not on a TV channel (ie. can't record) but I guess this is the way things are going. I reckon eventually there will be no TV channels, it will be all streaming.
Amazon prime do have catch up though. So if you can't watch live, at least there will still be the chance to watch. I suspect it will be limited matches though. We'll just have to wait and see. Can't change it. One good thing is the price though - £7.99 a month is a bargain and also get films and other programmes thrown in.

I should think Andy's matches will be available to watch again. It was possible at Queens to watch old matches.

wonder how long that will last
I wonder that as well. It remains to be seen whether or not Lendl will achieve the same results with Sascha.
Andy's relationship with Lendl was successful because of Andy's huge commitment to the sport, his hard work, his true grit and his determination to be a top player. No matter how good a coach is he or she can only do so much - at the end of the day success or failure in the sport depends on the player on the court.

Andy's comments
Instead, he may have been swayed by Murray, who publicly recommended his former coach Lendl to Zverev, who is also known as Sascha, a common shortening of Alexander in Germany.
“Ivan's experience as a player is great,” Murray said earlier this month.
“He played for a number of years at the top of the game, Sascha has spoken about some struggles in the Slams over the last couple of years, so I think Ivan would be able to help there, in the mindset, approach to these events.
“Sascha is already No 3 or 4 in the world, won Masters Series, been very consistent on the tour, looking to improve in the Slams.”

I thought the second split happened when Andy was injured with his hip.
As I remember it ............ the first split with Lendl was after Andy decided to have back surgery and the second split was after it was obvious that Andy had a real problem with his hip that might require surgery. I don't think that's a coincidence. I will be eternally grateful to Lendl for getting Andy over the line but it's pretty obvious that he had no inclination to hang around and twiddle his thumbs while Andy was injured. I take it as a compliment to Andy that one of the young guns wants to follow in his footsteps. Good luck to Team Sascha - I hope it works for them!

I watched Rafa's match last night, or should I say this morning, and was shocked at the noise level. It seems that everyone just keeps on talking and makes no effort to stop when the point is about to start. Also they carry on walking around even after the umpire has told them to sit down. I wonder how many are tennis fans and how many are just there for a boisterous night out. Rafa looked a bit cross when he kept being held up and I wouldn't be surprised if he requested day matches going forward.

Yeah the noise drives me bananas. Not just on that court, it's everywhere and they let people just walk about whenever they want. So unlike Wimbledon or even Rogers Cup. To the match itself, I felt so bad for Vasek, he looked totally out of place and seemed so badly conditioned compared to Rafa. Kinda embarrassing I expect. Good match for Denis to win yesterday altho' he gets Anderson next.

Lots of controversy today. Apparently Nick wasn't trying at all in the first set, which Herbert won. Then Layhani got down from his chair and gave Nick a pep talk, after which he started playing very well and won the match. Herbert is understandably very annoyed.
JAMES4578

Certainly controversial and whilst I like Layhani don't buy the official explanation , of course can't be certain but the pep talk may well have turned the match in Nick's favour https://www.atpworldtour.com/en/news/us-open-2018-thursday-federer-kyrgios Djokovic taken to 4 by Sandgren after winning so easily initially, good to see Goffin get through in 4 over Haase. Pity Monfils had to retire against Nishikori at 4-5 in 2nd.
I've always had a yen to go to the US Open but after the antics at this year's event - the noise, the heat, the disrespectful spectators,
the weird carryings on by coaches, umpires, etc - the desire has gone. Feel the same about earlier American tournaments too. What a
joy Wimbledon is in comparison. Tennis is a-changing and not for the better. x

nick said he wasn't listening to him but that's probably pride. I think that the tour and the officials are trying so hard to protect their image that they want to be seen to doing all they can to stop players, such as Kyrgios and Paire, from 'quitting' in matches. I think Herbert is using Mohammed's 'intervention' as an excuse. PHH ought to be asking himself how he let Nick into the match.

31-08-2018, 12:15
I've watched Pierre on various occasions - often when he's playing doubles to be honest. Despite his youth, he always carried himself well. So being young isn't an excuse for behaving like a pillock. I imagine there are juniors who are required to behave better than Nick Kyrgios ie the umpire wouldn't get down to give them a pep talk like they were 5. Come on Federer is what I'm saying just now and that doesn't happen too often.

I like Mohammed Layhani but his intervention was a misjudgment. ML and the umpires in Andy's and Alize Cornet's matches are certainly doing nothing to dispel the widely held feeling that officials often fail to uphold their remit yet intervene in inappropriate ways, often ways that can appear attention seeking. It's not been a good tournament for them.

I agree it's a misjudgement, but typical of the man to try and help a player who he thinks may be ailing. What matches I do see nowadays, I often think that certain umpires try very hard to be noticed, especially the newer ones. Whether that be through ill judged over ruling, the way they call the score, how they deal with the crowd. it's a pity they don't act on grunting, time wasting, coaching...

There must be other ways for them to help a player - during their off court encounters. They are all on the tour together all the time. On court they have their roles and jobs to do. Yes, let's hope it's the tennis making the news from now on.

I love him (Molay :) ) too but feel in this instance he was doing the job of a coach, which we know isn't allowed. Seems to have worked better than anything else with Nick though, maybe he should hang up the umpire's chair and become a coach......
Whilst I agree Lahyani crossed a line which he shouldn't have, I would query if he was actually coaching Nick. I was watching the match and saw Lahyani deep in conversation with Nick. It was difficult to hear exactly what was being said and the commies could only pick up words here and there so consequently could only speculate as to what was going on. Based on the fact that the whole conversation was not heard, who then decided it was a pep-talk? And how can a pep-talk (if indeed that is what it was) be coaching? It could have been a warning, albeit a lengthly one (speculation!) My impression was Lahyani was acting more in an avuncular manner towards Nick, and that, of course, is not being impartial which is where Lahyani went wrong. Even PHH did not notice at the time; it was only when he saw the footage after the match he became upset. I am wary of being swept along in a media storm about this and I wonder how much is pure speculation or more likely, a combination of fact and speculation? Don't want to be influenced by media speculation! Anyway, glad it seems to be settled and we can now move on from it. Had to get that off my chest!!

Interestingly, Andy doesn't mind the noise level etc at the USO. From his BBC column he says "Flushing Meadows can be noisy but I don't mind it." I really didn't think Rafa was going to survive. Phew! Sad for Denis altho' I think it was great experience for him. And happy that Milos prevailed over Stan the Man in straights as I thought he was going to lose that one. So 2/3 ain't bad.

Sorry to have missed Kohli v Sascha, but delighted with the result. PK is one of my fave players to watch - cat-like athelticism, who can play plan A or B or C. Little surprise that he and Andy have had some awesome encounters over the years. And not at all surpised that the more mono-dimensional Sascha struggled. I have so much time and respect for Mr Lendl and wish him well, but think he's going to find it much harder to get his new pupil over the slam finishing line.

Have to admit I switched off Fed v Nick towards the end of the 2nd set. The 1st set was great to watch but once Fed nicked it (pardon the pun) at the last minute, against the run of play there was only going to be one winner :sleepy:

Certainly not a great start for Lendl though of course little can be changed in a short space of time, I do quite like Zverev and was a bit disappointed but needs to add more to his game and think confidence is a bit lacking on the bigger stages. All credit to Millman for not taking every ounce of credit he could have for his win last night. (Unlike a certain Querrey who beat a very injured Andy.) Millman felt "guilty" after beating Federer. "....he (Roger) didn't have his best day, and that's for sure...Probably to beat him I needed him to have an off day and I needed to have a decent, good day." 76 unforced errors from Fed which included 10 DF's so he certainly did have an off day. And Millman did have a "decent, good day." Good for him.
Yes, respectful of Millman. I have never been a fan of Querry and even less so since his comments after last year's match with Andy at Wimbledon.

Me too
Game and first set to Isner on the tie-break...
Stayed up and watched Fed & Millman. Fed definitely not at his best but credit to Millman, he played extremely well, kept his nerve and was definitely the better player on the night. Fed couldn't get anything right. I enjoyed the match. :bravo::big grin:
Would love Delpo to win this. Down a set to Isner at moment.

Isner just a step ahead in first, however Delpo got early break in 2nd and holds on to take it 6-3.
Come on Delpo. :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

Delpo the better returner and now up break at 3-0 in 4th which could well be decisive.

Come on DelPo
So pleased for Delpo. Awful conditions, how they play tennis in that is a mystery to me. Loved it when he said he didn't want to come back after the heat break! Nice 2 day rest for him now. Well done big man. And well done Isner for fighting thru adversity.:clap:

Those Argie fans in the luxury box - are they friends of his or "just" fans, I wonder? Nice to see the AA crowd supporting him even tho' he was playing an American. I predicted Potty would win from the beginning and I still think that.

INSANE FEROCIOUS TENNIS from both! Thiem is a great player. That was crazy nailbiter - even more so than the Cilic-de Minaur match.
So relieved Rafa got the W but it could have gone Thiem's way just as much. Unreal!
It's past 2 a.m. here and I never thought I'd be up late yet again. Sheesh! But what a match! The quality of tennis from both was simply astonishing. Am glad Rafa gets two days off - he's gonna need it!

Couldn't believe this was still going on at 2 a.m. local time. It must have been an amazing match. What will Rafa have left in the tank though?
Absolutely amazing match. Could have gone either way right to the last point. Have to feel sorry for Thiem, but as Rafa said, he will definitely be winning majors in the future.
I've been awake all night and it's now past the time I normally get up.

Morning routine thrown into dissaray upon discovery that they were still playing. What a match ( and I only saw the 5 th set tiebreak)
Big time wow! Rafa in another blockbuster. Such a tight match. And I don't think there were any complaints about there being a final set TB!! Got to fancy Delpo's chances on Friday!

Haven't seen much of it thus far but seemed it became a dramatic match -pity for Thiem, however well done Nadal in coming through.

Just watched highlights on Prime - looks like it was amazing. Feel sorry for Thiem - was really hoping he could do do it after that first set. Old guard marches on...

Yes, I got about 3 hours of broken sleep in total. Still, it was worth it to stay up.
Good to see that we have two juniors through to the third round - Aidan McHugh and Emma Raducanu.

Nishikori turning round his quarter with Cliic after losing first 6-2, took 2nd 6-4 and 4-2 up in 3rd-hope can keep it going! Broken back but Kei takes breaker for 2 sets to 1 lead.

Kei takes it in 5, whilst Cilic broke back played great return game at the end to take it-well done!
Although a long match, for me it didn't have the wow factor of previous matches. Marin a bit flaky at times and just couldn't find a way to win. Sort of was hoping Marin would win. I actually do like him. But congrats to Kei for crafting a way thru.
Well done Kei. Happy he got through that match.

Somehow I feel it could be the same old same old .... I would like to see Kei win. Some players get so few opportunities. My head tells me Nadal.
I'm going for DelPo v. Djoko.
