1993 according to steven
1993 (when there were still 16 teams in the World Group, before it split into two divisions of 8) was the last time we played a World Group playoff. Bally and Anne have been playing Fed Cup for over a decade each and I got the feeling neither of them had any intention of letting this chance go!
Bally actually managed a run of 11 games won on the trot against top 50 players between the end of yesterday and the start of today.
Also, this is the first time GB have won 6 Fed Cup ties in a row since 1996/7 and the first time they have done it excluding EAZG2 ties since 1985/6!
Anyway, World Group II playoff ties are best of 5 but, unlike DC, played over 2 days with 2 singles on day 1, 2 more on day 2 and the doubles as the 5th rubber.
Teams in the World Group II playoffs on 21-22 April ... with their current Fed Cup rankings:
GBR 26
CHN 25
ARG 21
Winners SWE 19 v POL 24 (1-1)
Losers USA 4 v BLR 14 (0-0)
Losers JPN 12 v SLO 16 (2-0)
Losers SVK 11 v FRA 15 (1-0)
Losers SUI 13 v AUS 10 (1-1)
WG II POs are seeded so GB will play one of the 4 highest-ranked teams who end up in the draw (rankings change next week obviously)
Home/away would be decided by lot for all possible GB opponents - Fed Cup alternating rules only apply to WG I/II/POs from 1995 onwards and we haven't played any since then.
19 years of hurt never stopped us dreaming!

Correct me if I am wrong, Steven, but surely this means we will be playing one of the losers of the matches still in progress as all eight teams involved have higher rankings than the teams who just qualified, unless the rankings change a lot before the draw. Does that seem to entail that the process favours those in danger of being relegated, as they tend to be seeded?
(PS When I decided to follow Andy, I never realised I would get a PhD on all things tennis thrown in for free!)
:yahoo: :yahoo: well done girls :yahoo: :yahoo:

No idea about these things, but presumably it wouldn't take much for Sweden (if they win) to pass Slovenia or France in next weeks rankings
Really pleased for the team! Well done Bally, Anne, Heather, Laura and Judy! :cheer:
I am really liking the spirit and togetherness of the current GB Fed Cup team! It bodes so well for the future.
It seems to be happening away from the public eye, compared with the pressure of Davis Cup. And they are all the better for it.

Would be good if they got some more publicity of course even though of course there can be drawbacks. They got a brief mention there on the BBC news but that was it! Hopefully our DC squad can rise to the ocassion!
I was amazed they even had the briefest of mentions on the Beeb to be honest. I don't think many people know that the Fed Cup exists - a bit like the Solheim Cup in golf that very much plays second fiddle to the Ryder Cup.

Yes one sentence. However, on reflection, should we be surprised. Look what Andy achieved in the Australian Open. At the semi final stage he was also afforded one sentence. Disgraceful.

I know, but one thing is for sure: the GB team, the LTA, top tennis coaches like Brad Gillbert and Dareen Cahill, and a lot of WTA players in Eilat this week have either had confirmed what they already knew or suspected about Judy, that she is a world class coach.
Given that she has not herself coached at this senior level before, I suspect it will have a very positive impact on herself as well!
Well done Judy!

"ITF announce @FedCup seeds meaning GB will play one of France (1), Switzerland (2), Sweden (3) or Argentina (4) in their April tie"
The only danger is France, the other 3 are pretty much 50-50
We've got every chance against all four of them teams, the only players i've seen a lot of are Bartoli and Dulko from Argentina, but she's down at around 60 in the rankings now. Players like Rezai and Cornet and Garcon are down near 100 now, so theres no reason why we can't beat any of those teams.
Yes, there is no reason but Bartoli is the wild card if she plays but it is doubtful. The other 3 seeded teams are pretty much on the same level with GB(not looking only at current ranking).

Correct me if wrong, but most WTA tourneys around the play offs are in Europe so the nightmare would be a trip to Argentina.
There is also the question of surface - they will be in the clay season gearing up for RG but if we got a home tie presumably it would have to be on hard courts. If drawn away, would be interesting to see the surface chosen by their opponents....

From Steven on Twitter:
Just a reminder that the #FedCup (https://twitter.com/#%21/search?q=%23FedCup) World Group II playoff draw takes place at 12.00 GMT today. GB can get FRA, SUI, SWE or ARG, all H/A by lot
Main singles in Feb ties were: FRA Parmentier/Razzano/Cornet; SUI Bacsinszky/Vögele/Sadikovic; SWE Arvidsson/Larsson; ARG Molinero/Ormaechea
... though 3 of their no. 1s did not play - FRA have Bartoli if they can negotiate something, SUI Oprandi, ARG Dulko. SUI or SWE maybe best
I meant maybe the better ones to draw, not the best teams :-) All beatable though, but none easy! RT @friendmoscow (https://twitter.com/#%21/friendmoscow): @GBtennis (https://twitter.com/#%21/GBtennis) how about fra?
Crossing my fingers that they don't get France.
