FEDERATION CUP
This is the Womens Tennis equivalent to the Davis Cup; it has a different format though.
Fed Cup website here (http://www.fedcup.com/en/home.aspx) Wikipedia here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fed_Cup)

Great Britain are in World Group 11.
Their first ties of the year are being played in Eilat, Israel, 1-4 February 2012.
All details are here. (http://www.fedcup.com/en/results/group-i/europe-africa/2012.aspx)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fed Cup by BNP Pariahs World Group II Play-offs on April 21st & 22nd 2012.

The tie will see two singles rubbers on Sat 21st with each nation's No.1 player playing the other's No.2, before the two singles matches are reversed on Sunday 22nd. These will then be followed by a fifth rubber, a doubles match to decide the final score in the best of five rubbers contest.

Judy to captain the GBR Fed Cup team? Just seen this on twitter ......

stu_fraser (http://twitter.com/#!/stu_fraser) Stuart Fraser
Interesting news being reported by @Mike_Dickson_DM (http://twitter.com/#!/Mike_Dickson_DM) - Judy Murray under consideration to become new GB Fed Cup captain: dailymail.co.uk/sport/tennis/a… (http://t.co/BmxegHPw)

A couple of extracts:

Judy Murray is being lined up to take over the increasingly high-profile job of Britain’s Fed Cup captain.

The appointment in the female equivalent of the Davis Cup could also see the mother and mentor of the country’s one world-class player take a wider role in helping develop the youngsters who are promising a brighter future for the British game.

It is understood the Lawn Tennis Association are already in talks with Murray about a role that is likely to include coaching the national women’s team.

The post of Fed Cup captain has been vacant since the summer when head of women’s tennis Nigel Sears left to coach former world No 1 Ana Ivanovic.

What do we all think of the news that Judy is talking to the LTA about becoming Fed Cup captain/playing a role in Women's development? I certainly think she would make an excellent addition to what is an extremely exciting time for the girls. She is an excellent motivator, very approachable and she has an excellent eye for detail as well as being an excellent scout. Definitely a step forward for the game

I like the idea a lot. Judy gets along with the girls and I think it'd be a positive move if it happens.
Lankster -we'd got the discussion going already in this thread so I've moved your post over.

Getting closer to Judy being announced as Fed Cup captain. A very good move IMO. But is very annoying that peopler base their knowledge on Judy on the few pictures of her supporting Andy without knowing anything about her or her credentials it seems. Hence the silly comments on this articles. Judy expected to be named at Fed coach in next few days

Thought this needed a new separate thread as it's such a 'hot' topic and we're likely to follow it more with the involvement of another Murray!!!

More information to be added/copied over relating to tbles/ranks etc.

Just so you know - with threads we have the facility to post a 'redirect' notice when they are moved. Unfortunately we can't do that with posts so if you're looking for a post regarding Judy taking the job as Fed Cup Captain it's likely to be in this thread!!!

Fed Cup isn't until Feburary.
The girls are currently playing a normal WTA event in Hobart prior to the Australian Open and Judy is probably there to observe/chat/coach as they don't have much time to 'gel' as a team.

david1610

The article mentions that Netherlands, Israel and Portugal are GB's Fed Cup opponents. Tough to get the home nation in terms of crowd support.

Rankings of opponents (I have also put ages in brackets)
Netherlands have Arantxa Rus (21) ranked 79 and Michaella Krajicek (23) ranked 91.

Shahar Peer (24) is the highest-ranked player in the group at 37, but Israel's number two, Julia Glushko (22), is 209th in the world, while Portugal's number one, Michelle Larcher de Brito (18), is ranked 148 and Maria João Koehler 222 (19).

Anne's last match was a defeat to Krajicek wasn't it? I know that last year in her second main year on the circuit, Larcher de Brito went backwards in terms of ranking, and in retrospect she is a model for Heather and, later on, Laura to avoid - she became relatively prominent perhaps too early in her first season rather than making slow and steady pace (I know Heather and Laura have also had prominence, but they are being better looked after I think).

Anyway.... interesting. It might come down to the doubles against Israel! But the rankings of the other players IMHO suggests you select on character, not necessarily current ranking! And the players of the other countries have an average age of 21, so they may well be playing each other for some years to come. I am hinting about putting the young 'uns in, methinks!!!

Fed Cup News - main website here (http://www.fedcup.com/en/news/articles/israel-ready-to-welcome-top-players.aspx)

Excitement is building in Eilat, Israel's Red Sea holiday resort city, as the players start to arrive for next week's Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Europe/Africa Zone Group I tournament, taking place on 1-4 February.

As many as 20 players ranked in the Top 100 representing some of the 15 competing nations will converge on the Municipal Tennis Club for the round-robin competition, and if last year's corresponding event held at the same venue is anything to go by, the 2012 version will be another cracker with some top-quality matches for the enthusiastic local spectators, and many who fly down from the centre of the country, to savour.

When presenting his team for the competition, Israeli captain Lior Mor said there would be no easy matches for home favourite Shahar Peer (37) and up-and-coming Julia Glushko (208), who rose to the occasion last year by winning three out of her four singles matches. Israel have been drawn in Pool C with Netherlands, Great Britain and Portugal.

"We have a very difficult pool, each of our opponents has very formidable players and strength in depth and all the encounters will be extremely challenging, but it's not easy to predict the outcome of any of the ties as there are no clear favouries. They could go either way," Mor said at Israel's press conference on Wednesday, a week before the start of the competition.

Israel's first Pool C opponents will be Netherlands, led by Arantxa Rus (80) and Michaella Krajicek (93). Great Britain, with new captain Judy Murray, the mother of world No. 4 Andy, in charge, will field veterans Elena Baltacha (51) and Anne Keothavong (72), who should be well supported by youngsters Heather Watson (92) and Laura Robson (133), both former junior Grand Slam champions. They take on Portugal on Wednesday's first day of competition.

After her appointment in December Murray said: "It is a huge honour for me to represent my country in this way and the role represents a very exciting challenge." When Mor heard that Britain would face Israel, he wished Murray much success, "but not against us".

Linda... look at the link in my post above Anne K. just started against Maria João Koehler. Hope Judy knows what she is doing. M.J.K. got through qualifying in the AO and I think even got a main draw victory. Just the kind of opponent to trip A.K. up. No. Be positive. Now is really the time Judy earns her pennies. Anne K. got off to a great start in set 1 but now has to keep her nerve. Judy has to keep reminding her she has the tennis to do this. Really need to get it done in straights, I think and of course the first two games will be critical.
It will also help the potential for the play offs as this really could be a group where three teams win two and lose one match, and the play off determined on set countback.

And now Larcher de Brito... 19 years old three days ago. Came to early fame as a screecher to rival even last week's AO finalists! When I watched the Fed Cup in Portugal two years ago spoke to a mother of a tennis player who knew the family well and she told me Larcher de Brito had a difficult second year on tour. In manyways this year is very critical for her as she is currently ranked 136 but was ranked 76 in July 2009 when she was 16 years of age!
So definitely has the strokes so important Bally makes a solid start.
C'mon GB!

Don't know how long it will be before Bally starts.
Well the second game... as she holds after deuce for 1-1.
Interesting tie this. Portugal are playing two 19 year olds - the equivalents of Laura and Heather in some ways.
Hope Bally can get an early break and Judy can work her magic on her. C'mon GB!

patmoren
01-02-2012, 15:55
Going with serve 1-2 to Portugal, this one seems a bit closer but Bally should have the experience.

david1610
01-02-2012, 16:05
Bally got a break at 3-2, just survived bp at 30-40 and now deuce on her serve. Yes, I suspect the tennis level is much closer and it will be about nerve. C'mon GB!
Lots of deuces on this service game. Clearly a very important point of the match. C'mon GB!
Meanwhile GLushko serving for Israel down one set and 5-6 against Schools. Netherlands the favourites so if she can hold and get the TB, good news for GB methinks. Israel have Shahar Peer ranked 37 so likely to get one point in each tie for her singles matches. Oops now MP to the Netherlands which they take.
Bally with BP. C'mon this time GB!

Jan
01-02-2012, 16:11
I'm back - for a while anyway. Come on Bally!

david1610
01-02-2012, 16:14
Yes Bally holds....
Continuing the thoughts on the Israeli team.... if it goes to ranking, tie likely to be decided on the doubles, so interesting selection choices for Judy and I hope she has thought about the doubles combinations as much as the singles as that could decide some of the ties!
C'mon GB!

david1610
01-02-2012, 16:22
Tennis is tennis... Bally had to struggle so much to hold for 4-2 then of course gets another break for 5-2. Deuce on her serve now. C'mo GB!
Yeah first set GB! Now hope Judy is telling her not to relax and get an immediate break. C'mon GB!

First set to Bally! I like this, just wish we could watch it!

david1610
01-02-2012, 16:26
Further thoughts on the doubles.... given that the doubles pairings she chooses might also have a great bearing on possible Olympics doubles pairings..... no pressure on Judy what???!|!!
Yes! Early break for Bally! Now safe hold and keep the pressure on. C'mon GB!

Great to come back to!
And I am absolutely sure that those two straight set victories, and the tie, would not have been so straightforward without Judy!
Now interesting choice for the doubles, isn't it? Do you give the young 'uns a run out or worry about countback in case two teams in the group end up with two wins and a loss?
I do not know if Heather is any good at doubles but Laura might be worth a punt. But I am honestly not sure which two of the four would work best together and I think a 3-0 scoreline is the priority at the end of day 1.

The other tie in the group is turning out to be interesting. The Netherlands are 1-0 up and Krajicek came back to win the first set against Shahar Peer, who is the highest ranked player in group C at 37. GB plays the Netherlands tomorrow and not sure if we want them to win or not as the mach could be the group decider. Israel likely to beat Portugal and GB play them last on Friday. Which could still be the decider.
Mimm.. certainly won't do any harm for tomorrow if Krajicek and Peer have a long three setter!
C'mon GB!

david1610

Krajicek and Peer into a third as Peer takes second on a tiebreak. Already 8:30 local time. And they will still have the doubles to play and if the match score is 1-1 neither side will be able to rest their best players, so all in all this should help GB tomorrow.

Almost a perfect day. Just needs Israel and the Netherlands to have a long three set doubles match! Not yet started and already past 21:15 local time.
GB plays the Netherlands tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. UK time.
Not just a 3-0 today but no losing sets and that last set just rounded things off in terms of games score. Remember our heartache when Andy went out of O2 on countback. This group is pretty definitely one from GB, the Netherlands and Israel and so really good to start so well against Portugal if it comes to countback!

And so, so nice for them to get off for dinner at a good time and everybody will be sitting round the table as (i) winners on a (ii) winning team!

"Murray said: "Today was fantastic. We had two convincing wins in the singles, straight sets wins for Anne first of all and then for Bally, and then the younger girls who had a little bit of a sticky start in the doubles came through very strongly so we didn't drop a set and it was relatively straightforward."

Interesting tweet by S. Fraser to bear in mind if it comes down to it later in the week:
@GBtennis Here is one for u. Does doubles rubber final set go all the way (no tiebreak)? Umpire says no, man with rulebook says yes.

LOL - the short version of my reply was ... no it doesn't - there is a tiebreak in the 3rd set.

The long version (mainly for the sake of those who had already tweeted the opposite to Stu and who would therefore probably want some evidence that I wasn't just making it up!) was:

In normal (e.g. World Group) ties, rubbers are played with no t/b in the 3rd set unless the rubber is a dead rubber (rule 33.a.iii-iv) BUT in zonal groups like this, ALL rubbers (singles and doubles) have a tiebreak in the 3rd set if necessary, this being made clear at the end of Appendix A part 2 - the rules and appedix numbers refer to the Fed Cup rulebook at http://bit.ly/wSL8zS

----

Re. the late finish in the other Pool C tie, Michaella Krajicek tweeted: "What a day...totally exhausted...lost singles to S.Peer 7-5,6-7,1-6 but had match point at 6-5 in the 2nd :( In total we lost 1-2" #nedfcteam With the GB team finishing so early and their future opponents exhausting each other, our team could be forgiven for being like the Feds of the Fed Cup! (if that sounds a bit cryptic, think about which player often seems to get that kind of luck in slams ... ;) )

----

Finally, after an excellent day for the Brits in Eilat, I don't know about you, but whatever Hev's on, I'd like some! :rolling: Crazy pics at http://bit.ly/A6Z7e0 - it's the way the two 'over-20s' look like they can't believe how much energy the 'kids' have got that cracks me up the most. I wonder if Judy took the little ones out for a long walk in the park before bedtime to make sure they'd sleep ... ;)
