So much gifted away and Domi in a huge hole, just has to come out swinging now  I absolutely love Dom but this final has made me respect the Big 5 even more: the last final that was as poor as this was US 2014 (because poor Kei was exhausted). When the big 5 turn up for a big final they really bring it and perform.

Zverev's come of age for this today hasn't he? Just remembering Roger and Rafa telling him 'no negativity' at the Laver Cup. Seems a world away.

4-4 in the 3rd set. Thiem is playing a lot better but Zverev isn't fading.

RosieBear
13-09-2020, 22:23
Dom digs deep to hang on for 5-4. Playing a few good points but can't consistently find his A game. But a break here would be a massive boost. Let's go Domi, believe.

Sallydaisy
13-09-2020, 22:27
Thiem takes the 3rd set 6'4 ... game on!!!

Can he win the next 2 ???
;)

RosieBear
13-09-2020, 22:28
YES!!!! Dom takes the 3rd and back in the match. Long way back, but if he believes and finds his best then he can do it . Go Domi!!

Found form just in time and perhaps some doubt creeping into Zverev, Dom still has a shot!

RosieBear
13-09-2020, 22:36
In the semi Sascha was horrible for first two sets then came back and PCB got tight as it slipped away. Hoping for same but with Domi as winner tonight:peace:

JAMES4578
13-09-2020, 23:11
Some turnaround and Dom looking far more confident now, hopefully an exciting decider! Sacha faltering on serve and Thiem with early advantage in the 5th!

However Zverev finds way back, now up 2-1 on serve and a bit animated! Come on Thiem!

Sallydaisy
13-09-2020, 23:32
One set all - enthralling stuff!!

Speedy Hawk
13-09-2020, 23:34
Zverev looks like he serving to no one cos Thiem so far back barely see his head just above barrier boards around court.

Ooooh. Will he able hold or Thiem break back make even again? Holding serve for championship is very different from normal holding serve win match.

Edit: Failed hold serve. Back again.

JAMES4578
13-09-2020, 23:52
Sacha applied pressure and serving for title, however 15-40- come on Dom! Thiem breaks back for 4-5!

RosieBear
13-09-2020, 23:52
Phew! Dom breaks....but he's exhausted and going to be vulnerable on his own serve. Dig deep Dom, refuse to lose.

RosieBear

Dominic Thiem wins the 2020 US Open Championship.
2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(6), first man to come back from 2 sets down since 1949.

What a battle, both of them really wanted that but it was Thiems' time at last.
And he won't need to phone Andy Murray after all ...
;)

RosieBear
14-09-2020, 00:24
So happy for Dom, thank goodness it was best of 5:love: not a classic by any stretch, but pure drama. Does make you appreciate Andy's composure in his maiden big win to get the gold, he wanted that just as much as these guys wanted this. But hey, not everything is about how wonderful Andy is - this is Dom''s moment:trophy:

14-09-2020, 00:24
Amazing win from Dom in the circumstances particularly when he seemed to be ailing towards the end, well done!:clap: Became gripping and exciting even if was not always best tennis or highest quality, edgy in closing stages mind you! Credit to Sacha though as he played his part and was so close.

Poor Sascha. Emotional speech. Wish they'd just let him go. He's a very sweet guy, I think the sometimes cockiness is just his way of trying to cope with huge expectations:sad:

One final note (cos I just spotted it on twitter) - a different view of the Grand Slam Mens Winners since the start of the open era ... have fun working them out!
erm, not sure how to make it smaller so you can see all 209.
Here's the original link if you want to try that ...

What a final! What a USO! I thought the final would have a been a stroll for Domi, but Sascha turned up, big time! We ended up with a match which had a great comeback and then a final set in which the outcome was totally unpredictable. That made a welcome change to a mens final match when often there has been only one winner. Totally absorbing.
Huge congrats Domi,:clap: and although a bit harrowing to watch , Sascha did show us in the end he really cares.

Overall I've really enjoyed this strangest of slams. It had all the drama and twists and turns we could ever want. Will be etched in my mind for some time.
And now, Roma!
... :cheer:

Really enjoyed it. Wish there could have been two winners. Will definitely be supporting Sash next time he gets to grand slam final. Unless it's against Andy of course.

Match got better as it progressed. I was all set to go to bed but stayed up until the presentation had finished.
