My stream stayed for the whole presentation and I could hear (just about). Love Andy's speaches, he always acknowledges the other player so nicely and their team. Says he looks forward to coming back so he must have enjoyed that tournament.

Yes, Australia the only place other than here in UK that the stadiums seem mainly full for the whole of the tournamant.

better preparation than the hopman cup ?

I think Hopman Cup was really good preparation today. It was much warmer than it is in Brisbane and the guarantee of 6 matches is always appealing.

However from a competitive few point, Brisbane is obviously better as there is a ranking trophy to win at the end of it.

All in all I think both tournaments provide great preparation!

I only read today that Fish received a code violation during the singles for spitting towards the Bulgarian supporters but seemingly the punishment stops there. If he'd done that at an ATP tournament, surely the punishment would have been severe.

better preparation than the hopman cup ?
The question is a great way of reminding us that even in victory there is food for thought.

If Andy had gone out early (and in the second round he came very close) I am sure there would have been a lot of posts wishing he had chosen the Hopman Cup. Guaranteed practice, good work outs, good PR with Laura, etc.
Writing after the tournament victory, it is easy to conclude yes, as Andy takes another ATP tournament and starts his relationship with Mr Lendl on a very positive note.

This week for me has been one more confirmation that Andy has to start tournaments more strongly than he tends to. It is easy to dismiss this saying Andy had had a niggle, perhaps shortened off-season, first tournament of the year, etc. Just as we mention that in 2011 he got down on himself after the AO defeat. However, in a previous post I mentioned how in the majority of tournaments last year Andy either won or went very deep, or tended to lost out very early on. There was definitely a (nearly) all or nothing" tendency.
After the SF, Andy said in an interview that if he had started at 1 out of 10 this week he was now at 8 or 9.

He has finished the tournament at 8 or 9 and that is a great place to be for the AO. So job done in terms of preparation. This time. But start at 4 or 5 Andy. So you have a few tough games, one, two tough sets, not a few tough sets or matches and so risk going out of the tourney before you are at an 8 or 9. A preparation tourney means going from 4 to 8 or 9, not from 1 to 8 or 9, as this runs the risk of going out early before you get to 8 or 9!

Even more important than the Hop. v. Brisbane issue though and getting to level 8 or 9 IMHO is hearing the words "Mr Lendl" in the thank you speech and Andy's oncourt behaviour this week. If that means he puts all his energy into beating his opponent, rather than beating up himself, that extra energy might turn the 8 or 9, into a 9 or... 10!

Interesting selection... from a match where Andy won 75% of the games, of the 21 points here, Andy wins 11 and Dog 9 - 55% versus 45%. It shows two of Andy's aces so actually shows more rallies won by Dog than Andy!

There was absolutely no chance I was going to be able to wake up in time to watch after first Sat of Journo school and the obligatory session in the bar afterwards! My mate got so very drunk I had to let her stay at mine rather than let her try and make her way back home for an hour and a half.

It's great news to wake up to and a great start for his Australian campaign.

Very bizarre that the live streams on which I watched the last 2 matches this week seem to have been Italian! Couldn't find an english stream but didn't really stop my enjoyment AND I learnt some Italian!!
Well done Andy - good performance against both the young pretenders this week

Why did Andy put a cap on for the presentation??? Seemed a shame for people wanting pictures that his face was thus a bit obscured. Also hope he gets a haircut beforethe Ao as his hair is getting a bit wild and he needs to be as cool as poss in the Melbourne heat!

Which is possibly why he put the hat on. I think Lendl will try and smarten him up!
Live Score Hunter had streams without commentary.

good resuult but what a damp squib of a final that was! crowd did thir utmost to gee the Dog up, high point of his game was raising arms on high when he got on the board.
andy's serve saw him through this, and making the Dog retrieve one more ball - his unforced error count must have been enormous. andy pretty sloppy closing out ad points, but it was nothing as a contest, just the odd power stroke from the Dog, and a few dubious droppers from andy.

Do hope we get a video of Andy's speech - my livestream was so blurred for Dollys and cut off totally for the presentation and Andy's speech. Hope someone can find it somewhere

UNBEATEN THIS YEAR ! :cheer: now that's a start to 2012

I rather enjoyed watching that, even though we were crowding around a tiny little window on KnightOwl's laptop (can two people crowd?). Shame it cut out in the middle of the presentation, but you can't have everything. Here's Andy's presser:

Can anyone remember Andy playing three matches in a row with such confidence, great serving and no negative body language, swearing or "box abuse" Maybe with the sheer presence of Ivan, Andy knowing he has someone of that stature and experience behind him to help and support him is already making some difference.

obviously Murray has been in fine form the past few matches and Dolly wasn't as tricky as many expected. Of course he says he was restricted by a thigh injury and pity he didn't have more to give, but still I'll take it! of course Andy will face tougher challenges at the Australian open but whilst not reading too much into this event his performances have been encouraging. With regard to the body language issue whilst Andy can give too much in some instances the media can make too much of it and a slam is a bit of a different ball game but I'm sure Andy and Ivan are woking at his mental toughness.

Yes I'd agree this this - Andy's been calm before when he's winning easily but when he has a physical issue or is nervous then that's when the negative body language can begin. The Aussie Open will be a big test for this - if he can keep calm and focused in the big matches then his chances of winning really go up. I'm not expecting him to change overnight but he has improved a lot this past year, and with Ivan's help I'm sure he'll continue to improve.

Great to start the year with a title! Really looking forward to the Aussie Open. :)

Perhaps I am naive and am looking at it from the opposite direction. When his behaviour is good on the court he concentrates more on his tennis, stays focused and therefore plays better and wins. Its an intriguing circle.

some (me) think andys body language makes no difference i see it as a way of him firing him self up i am far more worried when andy is playing poorly and we get no reaction(IW & MIAMI LAST YEAR)
and others believe its a waste of energy and gives his opposition a lift

What did they used to say about McEnroe's tantrums and body language. He was firing himself up and the opponent should start to worry.
Strange how two sides of the coin come about when there's a British player

I'm inclined to agree with you J. Andy himself has said that he tried hard to keep a lid on his emotions in the final of the Aussie Open last year and only succeeded in feeling totally flat.

It was always more apparent with McEnroe. He played better when he lost it more often than not. Sharpened him and was dangerous after an outburst.

Mac's tantrums were often as much about putting his opponent off as firing Mac up!

I agree about the flatness and if he can get to the final this year I sincerely believe it will be different with Mr Lendl* in the box, and Andy will go out on court in the psychological company of a multiple GS winner who believes Andy can be too. From his interviews it is clear that Andy believes that Mr Lendl's experience and belief can make a difference. It is also clear that Mr Lendl believes Andy can be a multiple GS winner. There is NO other reason for him to be in Andy's box.
We may never know the possible link between any physical pain Andy has to go through in his matches e.g. with his knee, and possible resultant irritation (my kids are far more likely to have an irritable Dad if I did not get much sleep, let's face it...) but other than that what Mr Lendl also brings to the table is what I would call for want of a better phrase a healthy "crap detector".
What this will mean is cutting out anything that gets in the way of maximising Andy's chances of a GS win. Andy has got the maturity to accept this. Remember he has already told us he has been playing trying to implement Mr Lendl's instructions.
I find it hard to fault much this week except the need to start a tournament, as I posted above, at 4 out of ten rather than 1 out of ten. The rest has been about playing and winning tennis matches. The last three matches, once Andy had hit reasonable form, were relatively straightforward and any challenges were met with in a mature, pragmatic manner.
Andy is willing to comply with what Mr Lendl believes has to be tweaked in order to win. That won't be much. That is the key to the mutual respect that make make a mature Murray just focus on winning seven matches in a GS, letting the last point go and concentrating on the next point, which is the one you need to get to win.
Good luck to both Andy and Mr Lendl in the coming days!

Given that Brad Gilbert is referred to as Beej and Darren Cahill as Dazzler I'm quite looking forward to seeing what Mr Lendl's "user name" will be.

Hearing Andy in his victory speech call the new person in his box "Mr Lendl" is the biggest single reason why my head as well as my heart once again thinks Andy will win a GS this year! He tried "Alex" and "Killer" and "Miles" and "Brad". Mr Lendl will do the business!
Don't underestimate this. It means respect, which means a change of mental behaviour which I think is one of the main tweaks Andy needs to make the difference!

Interesting to see him asking for the meaning of the shape of the trophy too.
