Trains do leave before midnight if I remember correctly. If you don't get train on time, you be stuck using very very very long bus journey and lots of changeovers. It nearly midnight so they need get on tube and kings cross train before midnight.

Saturday little bit better, there trains after midnight, before 1am. I remember last year match went on so long, me and Dad manage see end and tube then kings cross with only 5 minutes left before train leave. Phew, it very very fast walk!

Good win from Rafa, he really had to fight hard - hope he feels better soon.

I was impressed with Mardy - his first ever tour finals match and although he was nervous in the first set, after that he gave it everything.

I agree - sometimes it's only when I get to the end of one of Andy's matches that I actually realise it was a really good match - I get so caught up in willing him to win that I hardly notice what I'm actually watching.

Maybe that answers your question - look up the score, then watch the match!

I think they are actually tied as, by my reckoning, there is the same game win/loss difference between them: -

Federer won 2 sets and lost 1 with a winning game tally of 6 + 2 + 6 = 14, and a losing game tally of 2 + 6 + 4 = 12, making a game difference of +2

Nadal won 2 sets and lost 1 with a winning game tally of 6 + 3 + 7 = 16, and a losing game tally of 2 + 6 + 6 = 14, also making a game difference of +2

Or am I being too simplistic - is it decided by a different formula?

That's been the story of the first round so far - Jo against Fed - Fish against Rafa and now Berdych against Novak! Such a pity that Andy didn't manage to pull it off too but then if he hadn't been injured he would have probably done it in two and everyone would be earmarking him as the favourite - funny game tennis!

I feel so sorry for Andy- an event he loves with the home crowd able to get behind him-and having qualified so long ago- what a fabulous event this could have been for him - but i firmly believe that "most things in life happens for a reason" and although you generally don't recognise this at the time- in hindsight you usually can-

So- i hope with Andy having to retire from this great event he will be able to rest and recouperate and allow his body to mend and get fit & healthy for the forthcoming season which i have a feeling will be his best season ever-

Rest well and get fit and healthy again Andy - enjoy some time with your friends and family & we all look forward to following you reap the rewards you so deserve next year.

Hugs for him, the forum folk and anyone going to O2 who'll miss seeing him.
:grouphug:

Muzzah must be absolutely gutted to end his season like this when he had such high hopes of doing well in London.

Ah well, Brisbane starts in 5 and half weeks time and he'll need to fly out a few days ahead to acclimatise.
Sooooo, that's 5 weeks 'off' (and an extra 5 days due to not playing in rest of the WTF).

Given he probably shouldn't do any training until the injury has healed I reckon he needs to have as much rest as he can, go out and enjoy himself, catch up properly with family, friends and doggies and WHEN his body is ready to get back into tennis mode.
Take care of yourself Andy!!!

They interviewed Tipsy on Sky this afternoon before we knew about Andy's withdrawal - he was very sweet and said basically that whilst he'd love to be in the tournie he wouldn't wish injury on anyone (I think it was Greg had said that when you are in the reserve situation (as he was a few years back) you basically are hoping that's what will happen........charming!).

Really disappointing end to Andy's season and for the WTF as a whole. Really didn't think his injury was as bad when I saw him yesterday although goes some way to explaining the shocking serving. Glad he pulled out today so at least Tipsy can have some preparation for tomorrow and also so people going are aware. At least they do have the 9 and 10 as alternates. I remember one year pre London when they were scraping about for people to play!

Best of luck to Ferrer tomorrow, would love him to qualify for the semis. He has been superb both times I have seen him at the O2, a massively underated player in my opinion. A little sad that the shine has been taken off his victory yesterday, hopefully he can back it up with another win.

Sad that Andy had to pull out but the right decision though. Hopefully he gets a nice long and well deserved break so that he'll be back stronger than ever next year.

Let's hope Fed doesn't make it to the final. :red devil:

Very impressive performance from Federer tonight, it reminded me of how he beat Andy comfortably at this stage last year too. It would have been good to see a more competitive match - Rafa definitely doesn't seem to have recovered fully which is a shame.

I've just finished my quota of matches at this year's tournament.

I had gone to 4 RR sessions in the previous 2 years - this year, went to 6!! Basically all of them, so far..

What was apparent from these matches is that the courts are fast and relatively low-bouncing - thankfully relatively typical indoor hard courts.

This has rewarded the attacking players - and the hard hitters.

The Ferru v Andy match was frustrating because Andy really ought to own Ferru On hard courts. But of course his injury was a major factor. I think maybe he has over-exerted himself since the USO, and perhaps shold not have played so much during the Asian swing.

Really enjoyed all of my time at these matches - good venue - seems that you are guaranteed an excellent view on level 1 in particular.

23-11-2011, 00:22
Glad you enjoyed it Super8,just my first day! Fed and Rafa though certainly didn't live up to the billing and whilst I wasn't expecting a classic even more one sided than I could have feared. Even if Fed showed some sensations form Rafa was clearly not himself. Disappointing for spectators, though some seemed thrilled. Thr doubles lasted longer even it ended up being pretty straightforward for Dan and Max! Real pity for the tourney that Andy participation is over, but in the circumstances the only decision he could take. He was misfortunate but may need to consider his future scheduling.

super8
23-11-2011, 00:36
James, are you going tomorrow too? Or maybe a few more sessions than that?

Yeah, tonight's match wasn't a classic - but really this is Roger's best surface and Rafa's worst - and so if Roger plays well - which he did - then Rafa will struggle. And they don't often play well at the same time in their matches against each other.

Many of the matches have been very physical - and so if players aren't 100% then they are being found out more. Not just Andy - also Nole, Rafa and Fish too. Mardy was sub-par against Jo today.

23-11-2011, 13:33
Well now that Andy is not competing the dilemma is who am I going to root for, after careful thought the answer has got to be David Ferrer, ok he beat Andy the other day but you know as well as I do that wouldn't of been the result if Andy had been 100% fit. Ferrer is a very under estimated player & sometimes doesn't get the credit he deserves & who is always there in the mix, plus he is a very good friend of Andy's, so looking forward to the match tonight against Noel & hope Ferrer does the job.................sorry Rafa fans...just wanted to get that out of my system:)

What was apparent from these matches is that the courts are fast and relatively low-bouncing - thankfully relatively typical indoor hard courts. .

That's exactly the opposite of what players and commentators have been saying on TV. Everyone seems to reckon the courts are SLOW, at least slower than they were last year. Thus giving Fed for example more time to react to Rafa's high ball to the back hand. And the attacking players are not getting as many cheap points as they would expect on an indoor hard court.

RoastLamb
23-11-2011, 14:48
The crowd was very much 80% pro Fed yesterday. And the commies and journalists on twitter (Neil Harman especially) were 100% pro-Fed and gushing quite horribly. All quite vomit-inducing.

Anyway, I'm hoping Djokovic can get back to his amazing form. I'm willing him on at this point because he's the only one who could beat Fed. Having said that, Tsonga came close the other day.

Team India won the dubs in straights. I had picked the other team. I am really tanking in the dubs FTDs. Don't care as long as my Canuck wins.

I think that the degree of bounce is more of a factor with the Rafa forehand to Roger backhand.

Lower bounce always suits Fed more.

Slower courts usually suit Rafa more.

The new guy doesn't take the points of the player they are replacing, so he can never get more than 2 wins. They need a replacement because they have to have a match for all the people who have paid to watch - so it's more like an exhibition really, except that they do get points for it.

Andy pulled out ..... what a sickening blow for us all and especially for him
Andrew Castle giving a 'speech' in the Barclays hospitality room, slating Andy for 'encouraging strike action which all other players rejected ' (after all he earns some £40,000 per hour on court) and saying how both Rafa and Fed had the wisdom to rest up a bit after the US Open but Andy lacks sensible guidance !!!!
Seeing Rafa play last night I dont think he rested up that much - he was so lacklustre - and I seem to remember Rafa and ARod were just as involved in asking for more rights for players as Andy was.

I don't think Fed is god. He is one of my favourite yeah. He does get tired but not like really tired make him play next match badly cos wore out in best of 3 sets. That rarely happens to Fed, I only see happen if he play best of 3 sets all 3 sets 3 matches in row then he will get tired. One match no way.

He most likely get tired in 5 sets long match and lose next match than best of 3. Even that doesn't happen often. Usually you see other players puffing hard and LOADS of sweat like Roddick and Rafa and Fed still look cool. It down to his game not too hard on his body like Rafa game can be.

Besides Fed more likely to lose match by playing badly rather than tired.

Oh good! I missed the match. Surprised Fishy took him to three sets.

Besides Fed more likely to lose match by playing badly rather than tired.Did you see the banner the other night and I quote: IF TENNIS IS A RELIGION THEN FEDERER IS IT'S GOD. Would that they had checked correct use of apostrophes before displaying it large world-wide!!:big grin::dunce::dunce:
