View Full Version : AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2012, R3: Magical Murray licks Llodra 6'4, 6'2, 6'0

Andy faces his 2nd Frenchman in a row in Round 3 of the Australian Open.
He's leading their H2H 2-0 but the last time they played was 3.5 years ago and it's fair to say Andy has consolidated his singles career since then.

Llodra has played some great singles in recent months so it could be another tester. Not sure that the H2H is much to go on as they were some time ago and Llodra has im proved greatly.
This is the sort of match that Andy enjoys so.....pretty hopeful

So has Andy! But Llodra can be tricky. However, hopefully another GEM bites the dust :)
Hmmmm was going to pick Llodra as my joker in ten men tumbling but he hasn't really played well this last year - he played a blinder the year before. Let's hope he's now had his flash in the pan!

Andy has the taking of lLodra. He has played him twice, although some time ago,and knows how he plays, that's half the battle.

When Andy in his post-match interview discussed Llodra and said he normally liked playing guys who come to the net I immediately thought of (i) Feliciano and (ii) the target that Andy will have at the net.
This is one where Andy on good form wins, Andy on bad form loses, and Andy on so-so form, get that sofa out! :)

Should be suitable for most at the weekend!apart from the golfers, but he ho least andy has a night match
Yay - a proper night's sleep for me then. Will be raining here apparently so no golf! Am hoping to try out my newly revitalised hip sometime this weekend. Thought maybe today but it's blowing a gale out there :cold:. So pilates instead.
Could this be a disadvantage for Andy being on Hisense yet again meaning he'll be playing the tougher rounds on an unfamiliar court?
Always seems he gets the rough end of the stick when it comes to scheduling compared to the the other 3.
Will make the slam win even sweeter if it comes though !!

I think that's pretty good all round.
Andy know's when HE is playing which helps with prep and he'll be playing in the cooler evening on a court he now knows. It'll probably be a bit livelier than during the day as well so there might be a better atmosphere and it's always seemed that Andy enjoys night matches!
It's very civilised for us in the UK too .....

I wondered whether to make a comment to Aussie Open about Andys court allocation but Andy does like playing on Hisense. It does put him at a disadvantage though as the other 3 are getting RL most of the time.

Yes, and it'll be Murrays Law that his R4 match is at 11am on RLA ... hot, new court, early start.

All things considered, much better to play late confirmed time when it is cooler on Hisense than in the heat of the day on RLA. Monfils will probably be playing around 5 p.m. (presuming he will get through to play the winner of this match).
Start focused and stay focused. C'mon Andy!

In fact, apart from the day Andy played his first match, it really hasn't been typical Oz Open weather this year - much cooler than usual so far; that may change of course.
I do hope that he asks if it possible to have a short hit on RL on Sunday if he feels it would help. Maybe thats another good thing about having Ivan as a coach - he should have a bit of clout over these things if necessary. Must say you would think that, as 2 years finalist, Andy might have a bit of a favoured schedule. He's certainly popular with the Aussies but apparently neither of those things count. Hes the only top 4 seed not to have been on RL

Glad Andy's got a night match now at least though do think he's got a bit of raw deal playing all his matches on Hisense thus far. However, as long as Andy's in fine form we'll be happy enough!
I guess it's tough for the organisers when you have home favourite Hewitt and world number one/defending champion Djokovic in the same half of the draw. But if Andy gets through to play Monfils then I'm sure that will be on Rod Laver. :)
I will definitely be watching this one!!!

Great timing, should catch all of this one! (Have to admit that I've only got up in time for the final set in R1 & R2; saving my night-time viewing for next week!)
I don't think it's been too bad for Andy - he's had a match in the heat of the day, one late afternoon with the shadows and now a night match, albeit on the same court.
Isn't that be preferable to playing 3 matches on different courts all at 1pm?

In all fairness he's been better off this year. Last year he got his second round on Margaret Court. The ladies match before him went to deuce every game, 3 sets, two tiebreaks - he must have been waiting to go on for over an hour and it was roasting - unbelievably hot. I know - I was there - sunburnt and sticky. The silly thing was I had tickets for the Rod Laver Arena - but devotion to Andy won the day so I just waited and sweated it out. Worth it though
Could this be a disadvantage for Andy being on Hisense yet again meaning he'll be playing the tougher rounds on an unfamiliar court?

I agree with you about getting the "rough end of the stick" but it's nice Andy going through the Draw under the radar, nicely and quietly. It's the same for Tsonga, so if they both get the Quarter, it will be the same for both of them, that is, unfamiliar court, but Andy has played many times there, it's better for him to stay in the same court the first week I think, don't you ? :trophy::trophy::trophy:

If you look at the 4 potential last 16 matches in Andy's half, and were offered a ticket to just one of the matches, you would probably want to see Monfils and Andy. Tsonga going to play Benneteu or Ken. Djokovic verse Rainoc or Hewitt is the other stand out match, with the final one being Ferrer v. Tipsy or Gasquet.
Wonder if they would put no. 1 and no. 4 on at night. Hope so! Erm, if..... and so on.
3am for me , yikes !!!
and Milos is on at the same time . Really want to see them both so will do my best

If anyone wakes up too early (and we've had a bit of practice the last few days!) you'll probably be able to follow another Brit on Livescore (doubt there's TV or streams). Colin Fleming is partnering Liezel Huber and they're in the Mixed Doubles against Nestor/Kirilenko around about 5am UK time (my guesstimate).

Looking forward to this match!
Good Luck, Andy. Will be rooting for you.
On the court scheduling debate, Andy has said he likes playing on Hisense as it's less windy. So I think the only disadvantage is not being used to playing on RLA whereas the top 3 have played on there all tournament!
Could this be a disadvantage for Andy being on Hisense yet again meaning he'll be playing the tougher rounds on an unfamiliar court?
Always seems he gets the rough end of the stick when it comes to scheduling compared to the the other 3.

In some ways yes. Just have to hope that if he goes on Rod Laver for the first time in future rounds that its the first time for his oponent too.
He did, however, mention in one of his interviews that he hoped to be on Hisense for his matches. I can't rmeember the reason - it was something to do with conditions, possibly the wind.
Sallydaisy
20-01-2012, 22:41
I think it's the case though that if he's scheduled to play on RLA that he can get some practice on the court early in the day? I'm sure that happens at most big events especially in the later stages. And it's not as if this is Andy's first visit to Melbourne Park; he's played numerous matches on RLA before, notably a couple of Finals (yay!) so he does know what it's like.
Monfils, Andy's seeded R4 opponent, has played all his matches on MCA - so neither of them would have advantage if they're put on RLA on Monday.
Not jinxing! Just believing!
According to Mats Wilander, Johnny Mac has tipped Andy to win and he thought he might just go along with that - I hope that's not the kiss of death!
C'mon Andy - you can do it!!!
WR5 David Ferrer hasn't had much luck with the courts he's been given - so far 1 on MCA and 2 on 'Show Court 2'.

Well I suppose Andy gives good value - if you have a ticket for one of his matches you don't get one of these easy straight set victories some other big seeds are serving up.
Wouldn't mind it being a bit easier for us at times those!
C'mon Andy!

more comfortable service game would be nice Andy
cmonnnnnnnnnnnnnn
quite!
I thought I was going to be able to see Andy's match on tv here in the Philippines, but Star Sports is covering Serena's match. Grrrr!
Andy can't afford to be complacent here. Llodra is no push over even for Andy's passing shots and percentage wise each of them is only going to make so many volleys or passing shots so Llodra is not going to stop coming to the net. Andy's passing shots will have to be consistently good.
Andy still not getting that serve going, always losing the first point in his service games.
Hmmmm as I was saying..........
0-30...come on Andy, don't let him in.

Aaaaargh what is Andy playing at!
I think he's taken the pace off the first serve which is giving him a higher percentage of first serves in, on the basis that he doesn't view Llodra as any great shakes at returning.
Oh ohhhhhhh
