Not really related to dieting but anyone else done the bridging exercise. I need to do it for my physiotherapy and blimey I'm struggling with it. Kills me!

Do you mean this exercise?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6ozW23S-rA

Apparently it's good for the lower back. Maybe I should try it. Why has it been recommended to you?

DaveArneRiise

Yes that's pretty much it. I have a sports injury from my football playing days. Quite a complex on but basically got a problem in my hips and my gluts, they are very weak. So thus that puts a lot of extra load on my hip flexor muscles, groin, abductors etc and they get very stiff. So yes my physiotherapist is guiding me through my rehabilitation work and bridging is one of exercises I'm doing, and it's very good for strengthening the gluts and working the hips.

Yep - we do that one in pilates and now we're up to the bit where, once up in the bridge position, you lift one leg and point it forwards parallel with the other thigh....it's a killer! Don't much like the plain bridge either.

I went to my first Pilates class tonight! And yes, we did that exercise. That one was fine. There was only one that caused me trouble, and that was where we were in a sitting position leaning slightly back against the ball. That is the position that really hurts me. I explained to the instructor that it feels as though I have a strain at the front as well as the sacroileac joint, and she said that she thinks it might be a strained hip flexor as well (the doctor thinks it is just referred pain).

Anyway, there was someone else there who's also had a sacroileac joint out of place, and went to a private physiotherapist to get it sorted. She said it only took three sessions to put it right. So I've got the phone number and will be getting in contact. Here's hoping I can also get sorted so quickly! (But why do they not tell you this at the doctor's surgery? Why do they just tell you to rest it, even though it takes a year or more?)

I'm using a great website - myfitnesspal.com. You enter your details and it recommend what daily calories to have to lose weight. You can track your food and exercise on there. It has helped me lose 11lbs so far in the last 5 weeks. You don't have to share anything with anyone and keep it private or you can add friends to help with motivation. I keep mine private. And the best thing is, it's free! :swingin:

That sounds really good, Vixs. Someone on VB also recommended an online slimming/fitness site but when I looked at it, it was so complicated. I'll have a look at this one too. Of course, since I've had the bad back and given up all exercise, I'm getting really flabby again. Hopefully the Pilates will help. (Actually, the instructor said to me after the class, 'you're really quite strong, aren't you?' in a surprised tone of voice so I guess that she'd thought I was just a bucket of lard :shamed:)

Once you register and enter your details and do the 1st day of the food diary, it's really straightforward. I have also found that in the search food database, I find everything I have eaten on there. :)

Not done any exercise as yet though. :shamed:

After seeing my pic with the olympic torch it really hit home how much weight I need to lose :shamed: so started calorie counting with myfitnesspal.com more strictly when I came off from work for summer at the end of June. Been busy watching Wimbledon and doing a bit of decorating so today was the first day of trying a new fitness regime.

After reading reviews I decided to try Jillian Michaels 30 day shred, it's based on 3 minutes of strength, 2 minutes of cardio and 1 minute of ab's and the workout lasts for 20 minutes. There is level 1, 2 and 3. I watched it first as I usually do with new fitness dvds so I know what to expect and felt this would be ok.

I have just tried it there and boy it almost killed me!!!:shocked::shocked:

I can see why it gets you results as I felt every muscle working and boy did I sweat!!! You are supposed to do Level 1 for 10 days, level 2 for 10 days and the level 3 for the final 10 days. I think I will stick with level 1 for now!!! :rolling: Just hope I have the motivation and willpower to stick with this. If I see results by the time I go back to work in August then I will be delighted!!

I have put on loads more weight. My clothes are all skin tight. But it's all due to the extreme stress I'm under with this house move - I always pile on the weight when I'm stressed - will have to get back to dieting after moving. Don't know about exercise, though, as although my back is much better my knee is much worse. Think I will have to see the doc about the knee.

I put on so much weight even before I went on holiday and then more on holiday. Since I got home last Thursday can feel I have lost some. Well, if you're not eating breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, drinking wine almost every day and sitting in a coach for stretches at a time and instead eating very sensibly, doing housework etc and generally running around like the proverbial it's bound to made a difference. Must redouble my efforts though. Hate some of the photos....that always always spurs me to action. Wish I could lose weight as quickly as it goes on.:crying:

I'm just putting on more weight and getting fatter and fatter

Today I finally went to the doctor about the knee that's been painful since August and seems to be getting worse rather than better. He says it's infrapatellar tendinitis and won't get better quickly. He was going to prescribe some anti-inflammatory tablets for a month to start with, but then realised that I can't take them because of my lack of clotting factor so prescribed gel instead to use three times a day. He says it's caused by running so I'm not going to be able to get back to running or tennis any time soon - so how am I ever going to get fit and lose weight?

pabbers
09-01-2013, 12:23
I'm afraid, as with me, the latter is going to have to come before the former, Linda. You can lose weight without exercising. It's taken me since July 2010 to lose 2st 2lbs but I've done it and because I did it slowly I'm not putting it back on so easily. Plus I took the decision that even if I did it at the rate of 1/2 lb per week, plus had weeks where I put back on (but didn't beat myself up over it) it would be worth it in the long run. I've gone through various regimes along the way to keep up interest and kick momentum from time to time. I'm now doing Slimming World (on my own) which is so easy it's unbelievable - so filling that I'm not looking for the naughty stuff. I put on a nominal 4lbs over Christmas but resumed "normal" eating (no such thing as a diet I'm afraid) last week and have already lost 2lbs. IMHO much of this is in the head and most of us are our own worst enemies. I've yo yo'd for years but finally seem to have got things under control.

Good luck.

Linda
09-01-2013, 12:28
You've done really well!

Yes, I guess I'll have to get back to Slimmer's World. Caz cooks most evenings but I will have to tell her not to cook for me any more, as although she sometimes tries to do 'healthy' meals there is always too much of it and it doesn't fit with the Slimmer's World regime anyway (I once lost nearly 2 stone on Slimmer's World but I found I had to stick to the red days and I was going to the gym as well - but of course I eventually put all the weight back on and more.) I'd like to be able to get fit too though and the only thing that's ever made me fitter was the running. I'm now back to puffing and panting at the slightest exertion :shamed:

Slimming World has moved on from the red and green days and quantity is not an issue - if you follow the easy way (or whatever it's called) all you have to do is have 1/3 plate of protein, 1/3 plate of carbs (potatoes, rice or pasta) and 1/3 plate of "superfree" foods which covers most (but not e.g peas/sweetorn) veg and fruit. Most non super free veg and fruits are at least "free" - so you don't have to do any counting and going out is simples. They hit you hard with syns on the naughty things like wine/pastry/chocs etc but since those things aren't healthy it's only right in a way. I have a jacket potato (1/3), baked beans (1/3 - protein) and 1/3 mixed salad for lunch and I'm so full I can't eat anything else and I really enjoy it. Sorry......getting carried away.

Probably worth a go. A good number of my friends and their hubbies/kids are on it and have lost loads. For me it's choosing the easy option, rather than the options where you have to count, that's worked. Soon as I have to count stuff I start saving up for those naughty things and then you're not full. If you're full, you don't crave the naughty things nearly so much.

09-01-2013, 17:07
WW do filling and healthy option as well now so no counting - I still keep track of my points every day but am dreading tomorrow's weigh in cos I really haven't been good - it is coming back down again now though so hopefully it won't be too bad tomorrow! I need to watch portion size - obviously I can eat as much fruit/veg (except peas/sweetcorn) as I like but everything else in moderation. I'm still eating my chocolates which are essential for me ... and still losing. I was only 4 pounds away from my goal weight before Christmas and hoping to get back there again before the end of the month - although next weekend is going to be a total nightmare with 2 nights out and a party  :sofa:

I have started a new diet which is supposed to have health benefits as well as weight loss. It's alternative day dieting and I watched a Horizon programme on this, it's fascinating how it all works. And the good thing is, it's flexible as some do 3 down days a week or 2 days a week like the Horizon programme. I've opted for 3 days a week so I can still enjoy my weekends.

Yes I didn't watch the programme but have heard about this. Hope it works for you. It wouldn't for me I don't think because I'd just get too hungry on the down days. I do think you have to find something you can adopt as a way of life rather than a quick fix.

Well we're all different which is why IMHO it's vital to settle for something you can live with long term. In the last couple of years of dieting I've followed The Natural Alternative to Dieting (a book by a nutritional scientist or some such) which was similar to the GI diet, then WW and finally Slimming World in that order. They all have elements in common but give their own personal tweaks. Jane is right that WW has something similar to the SW easy way diet now. All I know is that counting is deffo NOT for me. I'm bad enough at sums as it is! ;)

Don't know if you have a dessert in the evening, but I started leaving mine till somewhere between 8-9pm so I still had something to look forward to. This is when I use my SW syns at the mo and I have coffee and 2 choccies (sometimes instead of a dessert). I found it was a habit to go straight on to dessert after the main course - didn't really feel hungry - so this has worked well for me.

I don't normally eat dessert - it's cheese I fancy later on. When I was a teenager I always made myself a cheese & pickle sandwich at bedtime - my mum used to say that it would give me nightmares but it never did. I can't get to sleep if I'm hungry.

This is a good website if anyone wants some healthy recipes or easy exercise plans. Operation transformation is a programme here on tv and radio that follows 5 leaders as they lose weight - it's meant to be very interactive so you can pick a leader to follow and use their recipes and exercise plans. It's been very popular here, thousands of people get inloved with it in different groups and supermarkets put the ingredients on offer to make it easy. I'm not following the meal plans but I'm following Charlotte's exercise plan and the 5k run plan and it's been good so far - only a week in though :)

I keep reading about this fasting for 2 or 3 days a week, and I believe it works for those who can to it (my daughter Caz can do it - she can eat enough for three one day and nothing the next) - but I find that I need to eat a similar amount each day - my stomach expects today the same amount of food I had yesterday.

I've been doing the new Slimming World diet since I joined Monday night. I really have my doubts about it - I can't see that I can lose weight whilst eating potatoes or rice along with the fish/meat and vegetables. When I go for the weigh-in, if I haven't lost 4lbs (which one would expect from the first week of a diet) I'll tell her that I'll revert to the old Red Days diet instead.

Well just think about it........if you're following the easy way diet, then if you fill yourself up with those healthy things, they really aren't as calorific as things like wine or the munchies you'll go looking for when you're on a "counting" diet that allows you to "save up" for things like chocolate because then you can't fill up on the healthy stuff, you're always hungry and always hankering after the things you shouldn't have. That's what I've found anyway. If you stick to a third of a plate for each you can't overdo things either.

*Sigh* - this is about the 4th day on the trot that I've been going to get back to "normal" but with all the b'day celebrations I'm really not doing very well. Then one of those meals for 2 with a bottle of wine fell into my trolley in Tesco instead of the healthy meal I was going to cook. Hey ho. Not going to beat myself up - have learned not to do that over the 2 and a half years it's taken me to lose just over 2 stone and it's worked very well. I allow myself a gain here and there provided long term I get back on track.

I've got as far as buying the book, but no further!!!!.

I have got to lose half a stone, which I have put on over the autumn and winter. Usually I just do a lower carbohydrate diet, and for me that usually does the trick, as its carbs that tend to make me put on weight.

Seriously though, I'd suggest, rather than being annoyed with yourself and thinking what's the point (not that you are necessarily but just in case), just either assume you've had your syns for a week or restrict yourself to 5 syns a day to mitigate the effect. It's surprising how if you just go back to "normal" immediately, you don't always get punished for transgressions.

Linda
27-01-2013, 21:08
It's OK. I haven't abandoned the diet, I had zero syns for 3 days before and the day after, and I think I've still lost weight this week.

Now I have my work annual outing tomorrow - which is to a restaurant and it's usually quite a boozy do. We've pre-ordered from the menu, though, and I've ordered tuna salad and requested no dressing unless it's fat free (but I expect they'll forget that bit). My boss has insisted on sharing a taxi, though (he lives near me) even though I offered to drive. He says I can't not drink. So then I'll be having another week of no syns to make up for all the wine I'll be drinking.

There is another easy diet out now called "The 8 hour diet". You eat all you want in a short time frame. Apparently you can get results if you only do it 3 days a week. Probably easier to do than the 5:2 diet as there is no measuring what you eat.

Since leaving uni 2 years ago I have piled on 2 and half stone and although 'slim' to others I am overweight for my height now and my BMI is in the obese area. I have gone up 2 dress sizes and never been this weight in my life.
Now is the time for me to take control. I always thought being out of work was a pathetic excuse for being fat but now I understand how it happens.

Me too - they're amazing aren't they? But you just watch, they'll make them available for a while and then they'll disappear and it'll be back to trousers that gape at the back without a bulky, unflattering belt :grrr: This happened about 12 years ago (long memory I know) when I bought 2 fab pairs of needle cord trousers that fitted on and at the waist a treat. I literally wore them through - could I find any the same again, not on your life. Why don't they make ALL trousers with this style option - they seem to be flying off the shelves.

Good luck with the interview, Traveller.

You're doing really well. I'm afraid I've dropped by the wayside again - I got a bit fed up that the additional weight I'd lost when I had 'flu went straight back on, and then the leader of my Slimming World group resigned due to her husband's ill health so I stopped going, at Wimbly last week I took slimming food with me but just didn't fancy it and bought fattening food there, and I've had a few meals out too. Today we had a PCC awayday (an all-day PCC meeting to discuss various church matters) which included an enormous lunch. My new exercise regime hasn't gone well either as my back is bad again and my knee is getting worse again - I haven't been to the gym last week or this due to watching Wimbly, and I will have to be very careful when I do go back. I daren't step on the scales again now

I know its hard to get back in the swing of things but just think of it as a blip and keep going! Take it easy gym wise, have you tried pilates? Thats pretty gentle on the limbs and good for posture etc I get bad backs and strained my ligament in my knee which put paid to my dancing career but ive done pilates and found it quite helpful.
Dont give up though! Keep going and post on here for support cos having support is definitely a help, im losing weight with my 2 best friends and we just message each other on our phones but knowing they are there to gee each other on is a big boost.

Yes, I've been doing Pilates since I put my back out more than a year ago. It's great for toning the abs but doesn't help the weight loss.

Don't give up Linda - remember if you're exercising you need to up your protein intake - I don't know why but it works for me!!!

Might not be for everyone, but I've been doing 'Insanity' for the last three months, and in the first three days I lost a couple of inches round my middle, and now I feel that I'm in the best shape I've ever been in. It does require commitment and motivation, and it's not cheap, but I'd recommend it.

Right back on it!! Back to square one as I lost my way big time recovering from surgery and struggled to get into the routine. I find it easier to stick to a diet when I am working so it's been hard the past few weeks since I have been on hols since the end of June. Back to work soon though so hopefully I will stick to this and lose the weight I have gained. Day 3 going well so far.

Yes I know the feeling you beat yourself up about it then I reach for another custard cream! But everyone has slip ups and the key is to forget it and move on todays a new beginning (or 3 days ago in your case!)

Keep going folks. I always thought when one got older weight loss was easy. It's not for me.....but I will keep trying. My problem is that I can not drink wine for 2 weeks, 3 weeks.....but if I go out or have friends round I turn into a binge drinker.:wino: Had a long conversation at the funeral on Friday 12th July which turned into a drinking party in the sun. All the women I was with agreed that they're the same. Supergramps went home at 3.30 as he goes out on Friday evenings. I stayed and then a large group of us moved across the road to another pub and sat outside there in the sunshine. More like a party than a wake but I'd been on a diet all week so undid my good work. Haven't had any alcohol since (12th July) but seeing a friend at the weekend who loves cooking and wine!!:boogie:

Trouble with alcohol is that it slows the metabolism too. Mr P keeps suggesting drinks and nibbles outside about 5.30pm in all this nice weather and I'm too weak willed to say no or just have a soft drink :shamed: - still I'm managing to keep my weight steady now although I would like to lose just a couple more pounds before our cruise in September.

I dont really drink that much but pimms goes down a little too easily though I use diet lemonade.
I had a nice glass of really cold white wine the other night at the theatre and it went down a treat it was hottest day ever though!

Alcohol slows your metabolism? No wonder I can't lose weight! I've always thought that a glass of dry white wine wouldn't do any harm  But lately I've been trying to find non-alcoholic alternatives. I've been drinking cloudy lemonade (it says it has no added sugar) and non-alcoholic mojitos (although they do contain sugar).

I've given up going to Slimming World as the people there didn't motivate me at all (unlike the group I went to years ago) - all the meetings seemed to be about recipes for non-fattening cakes and puddings, and as I don't eat cakes or puddings anyway I wasn't interested. I want non-fattening cheese and wine!

In this hot weather I've been fancying ice cream, though, and come up with a healthy alternative. I bought a pack of frozen raspberries, and I just put some into a bowl straight from the freezer and stir in some fat-free natural yogurt. Delicious! (Perhaps I should go back to Slimming World and tell them.)

I eat strawberries or blueberries with natural yogurt most days as a dessert. Have also been drinking lots of pure juices and slimline tonic with ice and lemon during this hot spell. But like you Linda do like cheese and wine. Have cut down on cheese but do eat cottage cheese. It's the wine wot does for me!!!:crying: I also exercise 3/4 times a week but my metabolism is obviously grinding to a halt. I have friends who drink pints of lager and they're slim!!

*Sigh* my mother was like a rake and could eat anything.........I had to take after my father's side of the family - aunt at 20 stone was told basically to lose weight or die! Thankfully I've never been anything like that big - 13 stone after the birth of my first but I've struggled with my weight since teenage days.

Holidays are great but there's too much temptation and I have been very bad indeed. Lots of walking last week but none really this week so will have to rectify that the next few days. I had managed to get back down to almost my goal weight before the holiday began so hopefully once I'm back eating normally again what I've gained yhe last fortnight will go quite fast.

Good luck Vixs.

Yes - and that's the essential attitude IMHO - not "once I go back on a diet".......this is for life. I used to put a few pounds on and think "what's the point" and then stuff myself out of a mixture of despair, self loathing and bad attitude. I've put a few pounds on several times recently because we've been away from our normal routine or I have treated myself to something unhealthy but as soon as I went "back to normal" the weight fell off immediately. I think if you tackle it without delay it doesn't get a chance to take hold and much of what you put on quickly is fluid, just as fluid is what you lose quickly at the beginning of a diet.

It is a lot about a attitude its a way of life and changing the way you think about what your eating rather than a diet as pabbers said.

It absolutely is a change in the way you eat. I know everything in moderation is the answer. I know the best things to eat to help me lose weight and I enjoy my food and can still have treats,

I went into M&Co today and saw a pair of trousers I quite liked, so tried them on in my usual size 16. They were a mile too big  so I had to get the 14! I don't think I have really lost weight ( the design must just come up big) but it's still quite nice to be able to buy a 14! :)

Maybe buy something from an American outlet such as Lands End then you'll be able to buy a size 10!!!!!!

Good thinking Cazza  I once owned a trouser suit in a size 8 but of course it was American, so it was really a 12. When I was a teenager I always bought a 12 - but I tended to rip the sleeves out of the armholes 'cos I'm very broadshouldered, so need a 14 even when not fat.

Well done Vixs, amazing!

I remember when I was travelling around Europe I lost a lot of weight and spent 3 weeks in Miami at the end of the trip relaxing - I went shopping in a mall and bought a top and some cord trousers in a size 0 - don't own them now wish I did to see how small I was back then!
