The Transit of Venus - an even rarer event than a Queens Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics in London.
;)

Watched some footage early this morning; it was too cloudy here to see it and I'd have needed special viewing glasses too.

Excellent article on the BBC website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17745366)

Makes you realise just how big the Sun is too .....
Venus is the tiny black dot top left; Earth is only a bit bigger. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Solar_System_objects_by_size)

very cool pic tho , I love anything astronomy .

I Remember when I was a teen , there was an eclipse of the sun , a full eclipse , and my mom was so scared , I had to reassure her that the world wasnt coming to an end.

(images and information from the BBC webpages/NASA) Was lucky to see the last Transit of Venus in 2004. I was working at Cowley School and saw it from the roof of the original grammar school building. That was immense as it hadn't been seen since 1882 and after this one it won't be seen until 2117. Count myself lucky that I had a free period during the transit and was able to view it. It was well organised by the Science Dept and must admit most of the pupils who saw it were impressed.

Good morning! Looking forward to my 72nd birthday next Friday. It has been said that people of advanced years are prone to memory loss and a tendency to repeat thing. Luckily I have all my faculties intact. I can remember my first day at school, VE Day, going to grammar school, the death of my lovely dad, my first job, my wedding day, the birth of my children. Oh excuse me...left the iron on. By the way I will be 71 next Friday.:boogie::boogie::boogie:

Strange story of the day. Our local vet woke up on Thursday night to see an owl sitting at the bottom of her bed - a bit strange perhaps but not untoward as it was a hot night and the windows were wide open. She shooed it out and thought no more of it. On Friday night she woke up to find the same owl sitting at the bottom of her bed. On closer examination she realised that it had a broken beak and so could not feed. She took it to her surgery this morning in the hope that she could do something to help but wasn't sure if she could save it. Question - how did the owl know where to find the only vet on the island?

I am walking a half marathon which will probably take me about 4 hours, in 3 weeks time. I am raising money for cancer research, which has touched our family far too many times the last time being a year ago on the 12 September a cousin of my mums died at the age of 49 from a rare blood cancer from diagnosis to dying was about 2 weeks. It was a shock and I want to do this for him mainly as well as other members we have lost over the years.
I am sure a lot of you on here will have been affected one way or the other by cancer, its not racist, ageist or sexist it affects us all.
I have the link for my fundraising page in my signature below or you can text even if its just 50p or £1 every penny raised will go to cancer research.
I feel a bit cheeky asking on here but want to raise as much as possible. Thanks for reading.

Elder son's gf was offered a job in Kuwait, which has changed to Dubai (phew!) while we were away. They have the added worry of finance as they have a mortgage here and Dubai is expensive. He told me to try not to stress about it...........honestly.........what does he think mums are for???!!!

I know it's easy to say but try not to worry too much SG. Good for them SG - it probably takes more guts to leave everything when you're over 40 to fulfill a dream than it does when you're in your 20s and have no fear and nothing to lose. I tried to persuade Mr A to buy a camper van and go travelling six years ago when we both retired but he wasn't up for it - I'm still working on it though. Do you ever lose itchy feet I wonder?

You know they will never have to think "what if". I know how hard it is being separated, but today with technology as it is you can still talk and see them. I thank heavens for Skype!!!! Yes - I always remember being told by someone that our kids are only on loan and that's something that's stuck with me. I remember my mother telling me that, when I was thinking of living in France (I was 25 years old and working temporarily for Barclays in Paris, having done a French degree) my father didn't eat for 2 weeks. I've vowed never to react like that or at least not to show it. In fact talk of working abroad has been going on for about a year, so I think I've got used to the idea and whether it's Dubai or Oz makes not that much difference. They just need to make the right choice (and possible compromise) for them as a couple in terms of job and quality of life. The gf is the one with drive and so son is reasonably happy to let her take the lead but he says he'd find it difficult to live in the Dubai culture the way they treat women, the racism etc as he's very much for equality. Unfortunately that's the best job in terms of return to the UK ultimately he thinks. I just wish they'd flippin get married - the hat's been in moth balls far too long

Thanks for all comments. As mothers we do worry but have always brought up my children to realise that they can do anything if they work hard and have dreams. Our daughter left this country 15 years ago with her husband and two small sons for South West Germany where they stayed for seven years. Then they moved to the States, New Jersey for eight years. Now her husband has left BASF and is now general manager and president of an American Chemical Co Petroleum Additives division and they have moved to Philadelphia. They have Green cards and both boys are in American Universities. So I am used to separations and long distance communication. My son, however, has always lived in the North West and I am used to seeing him regularly and we are very close. There was some discussion about visiting Australia. He has told me as they will be there in January he would like to go to Melbourne for the Open. We have talked about it but as our plans were always to go to the US Open in 2014 and as we are not too keen on the long flight and the cost of a holiday there, as well as celebrating our Golden Wedding in May 2014, we probably will decide against Oz and perhaps plan to meet up in the US. Would have been an opportunity wouldn't it? But I have to think of my husband who obviously doesn't want every holiday to be about tennis. Strange man!! Pabbers, my oldest friend's son lives and works in Dubai and she visits them for a month over Christmas and New Year every year. They seem to have a lovely life. He is married with two children and they seem to love it. She has never mentioned anything about the political/cultural divide. Probably they only socialise with Europeans etc. She loves her visits and I know her son is very happy there. He was brought up in Africa and married a South African girl so he could have a different outlook to people who have always lived here......if you get what I mean.

Can anyone tell me what's the best air freshener to use? Sick of using the aerosols which don't seem to last. Would like something that would last and leave the whole room smelling nice and fresh. I have been looking at Glade sense and spray and airwick freshmatic but not sure which is the best? The plugins are no use as I don't have spare plugs that can be used for that. They are a bit pricey so don't want to waste money.

I can't stand aerosol sprays - they just make me cough. I'd rather use something natural - flowers, pot pourri or incense sticks. I see that you can now get a little bottle of perfumed oil with sticks that you put in it that are meant to soak it up and then disperse it into the air - I don't know whether they are any good.

Had some sticks as a pressy. Very nice but nothing beats opening the window for some real fresh air IMHO.

Thanks for your Queen's blog Angela. Its a great read.

We do have a subforum for blogs and people's experiences of attending tennis tournaments etc.

http://www.andymurrayfanforum.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?23-Thanks-for-the-Memories

It would be great if you could paste your Queens blog on that forum. :):) Or put the link to your Queen's blog in a post.

Help - can someone settle a family argument for me please? Is the word 'blether' a Scotiscism? My daughter insists that it's only used in Scotland but I'm sure I've heard it used by non-Scots south of the border.

I have heard the term. I would hazard a guess it's a northern rather than southern work. Means to have a gossipy sort of chat?

jagmad
25-09-2016, 20:49
Don't know if it's the same as my mother used say but she used to call
us blethering idiots at times.
I always took it to mean spouting rubbish.

But then again that's exactly what I might be doing right now.

As a Geordie I've definitely heard of it so it may indeed be a Northern expression.

Alis

Thanks folks - so maybe not solely Scottish then. Yes, to blether (verb) means to chat or gossip - a blether (noun) is a chat or someone who chats incessantly, often about rubbish. It's a great word.

Here in the North West we use blather as in "What are you blathering on about?" We also use blither....You blithering idiot. The origin of both blether and blather is Norse meaning nonsense and used in Scotland and the North of England. Used to do lessons on dialect. Fascinating.

It's next week so we are in that panic mode- planning lessons and being asked for paperwork mountains. The fire alarm going off twice for no apparent reason today didn't help everyone's mood as each time we had to wait outside for the fire brigade to arrive. Tomorrow will be tidy tidy tidy instructions. Think we just want it to start- -and be over! Tennis has been a blur. Thanks for the kind thoughts! Much appreciated!
