Hi everyone.

My friend knows a computer expert and he asked him about how to do a new site.

It will cost 125$ (forum+website) every year, and he doesn't accept them on a monthly basis. I don't have enough money at this time as I need to buy my friend a cologne for 120$ for his birthday and I have to spend some money after Ramadan to celebrate Eid. So I won't have enough cash.

Hello Aya

It's really kind of you to go to all that trouble to find information for us and don't worry yourself over this. Lovely idea to buy your friend some cologne and I hope Ramadan is going well for you. Eid is not far away now!

What we've got for now is this temporary home whilst we organise a more permanent one. We could go down a number of routes - free (like this), free but perhaps with some paid for support/addons, paid for but not extortionate (not too much more than you were quoted).

A number of people have offered financial support so we think any of the above options are viable.

We just need to take our time to choose the best one to see us through many more years of supporting Andy Murray.

VamosVixs
19-10-2011, 13:11
Yes I have noticed people are sending out less and less cards each year. In my work people are starting to make a donation to charity instead of sending cards.

RoastLamb
19-10-2011, 13:13
I tried that one year. Everyone's gift was a donation to an African AIDS foundation. Other years I've always bought Unicef cards and gifts but the last two years Unicef hasn't brought out a catalogue. Shame. I guess they weren't making enough money from it but I loved their stuff.

Yes - seems quite common for people not to like Xmas cake - or puds or mince pies for that matter. Strangely all three things are something that we all like in our family despite my younger son always having been a fussy eater

Think we should have thread where we can air our annoyances etc. But I'll post on here for now. Yesterday pilot light in our combi-boiler decided to go out!! Husband read book very carefully and the only way to relight is to press ignition. Of course, after numerous attempts it doesn't light. I'm sure I remember years ago people who had types of heaters just relit with a match. Luckily we don't need heating and the shower is separate but we have no hot water. This problem can only be rectified by a qualified person which, of course, will cost money.

Linda
25-10-2011, 07:36
Oh, that's unlucky. Hopefully the plumber will be able to restart it quite easily. I've not gone for a combi-boiler yet, I'm still keeping my ancient Potterton boiler going (You definitely can't light it with a match though! Have to hold the ignition switch down for ages whilst also holding some other bit in a certain position). Your post reminded me of the main objection to a combi, that you get rid of your hot water tank so can't have an immersion heater for backup (apart from the huge expense of having it installed and the other one taken out - it cost my neighbour over £3000 - apparently the current position of the boiler is now illegal so she had to have the new boiler put into what was the airing cupboard, where the hot water tank had been, with a chimney out to the roof!).

My daughter Caz was made redundant from her job at the Co-op last week. She went to the Jobcentre on Thursday, who arranged an interview for her on Monday with a lady who needed a carer (a job Caz has never done before). Caz and I were out shopping today when the lady phoned asking her to pick her up at 2pm to go to Worthing, so that Caz could get her CRB sorted - so she has got the job. Caz will be working with the lady again tomorrow, taking her to her day centre and so on. Caz is really happy to have this job as she loves helping people. The lady she is working for is only in her 40's but has multiple health problems - she is epileptic and asthmatic, she can't walk and has to have a catheter. Makes you feel grateful for all you have got.

Well done Caz. I wonder what people do who can't afford a carer. I think of all the disabled people stuck in nursing homes and it breaks my heart. I volunteer for a community support organisation and I visit seniors in their homes. But some of the ladies have had to go into the nursing homes and it shocks me to see all the people lined up in the hallway in the wheelchairs looking at the wall all day long. Kills me. So Caz will be really doing a great job!

Caz said the thing that has upset her most is when they went shopping in Chichester, and some people gave such awful looks to her client. She says that she never realised before, but there is real prejudice towards the disabled. It's shocking!

Not just the disabled ... I have to wear sunglasses all the time from dawn to dusk - even on quite dull days. My eyes are damaged and even a smidgeon of sunlight is enough to make me have to close them within a couple of minutes unless I wear the polaroids.
I've quite often had stupid comments from complete strangers but in truth the only time I can leave the glasses off during daylight is if there is thick fog!!!.

What makes me really sad is that I sure as heck don't class myself as disabled but if I'd been born with a condition of semi-blindness that necessitated wearing the sunnies the abuse would be even worse to take and so totally unjustified.

So here's a question for y'all. I'm debating this on facebook with a friend and her friends and I'm the only one with my opinion, it would appear.

I don't think Christmas should start till December. I don't know what it's like in the UK but here in Canada all the Christmas decorations and music is already out in all the stores, etc. The day after Halloween it goes full blast and it bugs me. Two months of Christmas? Is not one month enough - more than enough in fact? Personally, I feel it's all WAY too commercial and the retail businesses take advantage and, as a result, the true spirit of Christmas is diluted. What does everyone think on here?

Linda
09-11-2011, 18:42
I totally agree with you, Fiona! In fact I don't think Christmas should start till a week before at the earliest. By the time it arrives everyone's bored with seeing the Xmas decorations everywhere. Traditionally, they shouldn't go up until Christmas Eve! Though having said that, I did buy some Christmas cards the other day - the trouble is, because everything is on sale so early, they sell out well before Christmas!

RoastLamb
09-11-2011, 18:48

Erm......one year the Christmas cards appeared in our supermarket in August :surprised:
I used be a Merchandiser/Buyer at BHS (way back in the late 80's) for 'seasonal goods' including all the Xmas cards, calendars, decs and stuff. Even then it was customary to put CHARITY Xmas cards out 'on-sale' from the end of August to give them a longer time to sell ahead of the main stocks going to stores from end-September. We used to have an 8-week Xmas sales period i.e. from around half-term in the UK in October. I well remember doing all the sales analysis on the first day back into the office on 27th December and having to book provisional production space at factories by the middle of January!

I agree too , way too early for me .... Dec 1st is soon enough , and I love Christmas !!!!
Yep, Dec 1st is a good kick-off point IMHO. I was gobsmacked to see a couple of houses with lights up last week.

The problem is when you wish to buy Christmas cards with the Christmas message ie not snow scenes, reindeer etc. If you leave it until December there are very few around and in some stores none!! I have bought my Christmas cards and have ordered some presents from Amazon. It saves a lot of walking around when shops are crowded. Obviously do not put up tree or decorative ornaments etc until after the first Sunday in Advent but shopping early for Christmas is personal choice and my choice these days is to get everything done as early as possible.

But even the shopping early bit is driving me crazy. I mean, I just dread going into the stores now and having to listen to the awful muzak. I do like Christmas music - well, some of i - but there's so much bad Christmas music about. All I can say is we need more Michael Buble at Christmas time and less of the Santa Baby crap by Madonna.

I'm sure there are cheaper options out there but it's like a maze/minefield to someone like me. Always had simple phones but now want to be able to use fb, twitter, here.

I'm quite worried about what's been going on with the US government and the internet (I don't mean to be political, but this affects everyone who uses the internet!) I see that megaupload has been shut down - and I know several people who have put their vids on there. I put all my photos on photobucket for safekeeping, but if that ever got shut down I'd lose the lot! (I also have them saved on an external hard drive, but what if that went wrong?) Owners of sites like that can't possibly police everything that is posted on them. I know that YouTube do their best, as people I know have posted vids they've made to which they have added a soundtrack of their choice (usually a popular song), and their vids have been taken down because of the soundtrack. That seems a shame too really. I don't really know what the answer is - obviously people/companies want to take care of their copyrights but on the other hand it can't be fair to just get rid of everything

I dunno - a CD can still get scratched and you can't guarantee it will still be readable. At least on an external hard drive, the drive itself is enclosed, so it's a bit safer, although I suppose you could drop it from a height or something.

And yes, an external hard drive should be readable on any PC as long as it's not physically damaged, and modern ones can cope with a fair bit of damage before they're totally unrecoverable.

As far as reliability is concerned, there's not much to choose between them though, both are pretty good. Personally, I'm paranoid about losing photos, so I have several copies of most of them.

I'm hosting a baby shower in two weeks and would like to play some games. Tasteful not tacky or gross. Anyone have any suggestions?

pabbers

On the theme of babies and depending on whether enough people are coming, you can ask each person to bring a pic of themselves (or let you have the pic in advance) as a baby and then you number them and people have to guess who is who.

RoastLamb
19-03-2012, 18:24
Yes, I'm doing that one. Thanks! "Guess who the baby is". I also thought about a baby trivia game and fill in the missing words to the nursery rhyme.

Lizzim

Not really a game and probably fairly standard practice (I've only ever been to one shower) but we had to guess the sex, weight and arrival date of my friend's baby....

ljs

We bought a little book , decorated the front with baby stickers , then as each guest arrived , we had them write one piece of advice to the new mommy , and if they didnt have kids , they could write a wish for the baby or something that had been passed down to them.

The mom really enjoyed reading all of it after the shower !!

We also played the poopy diaper game , know you dont want that one , but it was fun , and the prize for that was a " glade candle " :)

ljs: This is her second baby. Defo don't want the poopy diaper game. Shudder. I know it's nutella but even so. I like the guest book idea. My daughter is decorating all the party favour boxes (I'm giving everyone a homemade cupcake to take home). My first time with fondant flowers so wish me luck.

Lizzim: that's a good idea too!!! In this case we don't know the sex.

Aah you see I'd use grainy mustard for breastfed baby diapers.

Oh dear - after reading this I'm suddenly hoping that I won't be a grandparent :sofa:

I'm sure you don't mean that ;) - you don't have to do the nappy thing - you can just hand the smelly baby back when it's dirty ;)

I need to know the answer to this one - anyone know?

17. What is the word for pregnant in England?
A. stuffed
B. full
C. up the spout
D. packed

-J-
21-03-2012, 20:15
C. up the spout
or up the duff
or bun in the oven

RoastLamb
21-03-2012, 20:16
C. up the spout

That's what I thought but this American quiz says it's "stuffed".

That's what I thought but this American quiz says it's "stuffed".only time i heard stuffed mentioned in this context would be during the conception process ;)

RoastLamb
21-03-2012, 20:20
 I always thought when you say "I'm stuffed" it means you're full with food. Not pregnant.

Linda
21-03-2012, 23:16
Quite right, Fiona, stuffed means full of food. Nothing to do with being pregnant. It can also mean up the swanee, i.e. everything's gone wrong. eg If x loses this match, my pick'em is totally stuffed.

RoastLamb
22-03-2012, 02:08
Exactly! I don't know where they got that from. Apparently a nappy in South Africa is called a disposable. I guess I'd better check the veracity of that one out as well.

Linda

Hm, has Andy got an Aston Martin now? http://the-slice.com/2012/03/murray-leaves-miami-practice-in-aston-martin/

Strangely, Rafa did have an Aston Martin but now drives a Ferrari. Didn't Andy have a Ferrari before? They could have just done a swap and probably saved tens of thousands of pounds (although I suppose money is not an issue as they are both multi millionaires).

They say 2 a.m but I just put them forward before bed or any time after midnight!:)

My iphone automatically changed when it was 1am. So I assume change at 1am to go forward and change at 2am to go back.

Linda
25-03-2012, 17:07
I think it's officially 2am when the clocks go forward/back, but I normally do it at midnight, or earlier if I go to bed earlier. Although I haven't changed the microwave or the central heating timer yet - really must do that, or I won't have hot water when I get up!
