Place your laments here!

I have almost no internet tonight! Definitely can't watch any livestreams  I just tried the UK Bandwidth Test (with nothing else running) and I have a download speed of 360 kbps. I know those tests aren't very accurate but if I run that one when everything's working properly I get about 6,000. No idea what's wrong

try rebooting your modem.

do you lose it regularly ?
first thing i would do is reboot router (proper;y if you can if not switch it of/on)
then check connections cables etc especially any extension cables
then after that its really down to your isp its possible they are having problems their end always worth a call to them as at if it happens frequently you have grounds to complain to them and your calls will be logged

That didn't work. But it's OK, it's suddenly come back and now I'm watching Dolly v Djoko! Ran the bandwidth test again and strangely it's now saying 9,500 - it's never shown that high before.

On reflection, I think BT must have been doing some work on the line.

Can anybody help me with this problem? To do with computer. Since yesterday when I log in to here, facebook or twitter the page is to the right of my screen as I look at it. Have tried in vain to centre but it moves the tiniest way and no more. Also at the top right where you have a box to maximise and minimise suddenly I have two superimposed on each other and the one box symbol has disappeared. This means that I can't log out/sign out as the symbol is no longer visible to the right of my screen. Also cannot move easily from top to bottom or, on here successive pages. as arrows (top and bottom) are hidden. Never had this problem before, don't know what has caused it and have no idea how to rectify it. Hope some computer wizard reads this and gets back to me. You know how I hate having problems because I don't know how to solve them!!!:grrr:

Awww crumbs SG :grouphug: - sorry I can't help - not a techy but sure someone will. Was it that extra glass at wine o'clock that caused you to hit a wrong button? Probably just about to do the same myself! Bring on the next DC!!!!!

Hi supergran! I've moved this to Technical Woes as it seemed more appropriate!

I know you've almost certainly tried this, but I have to go wth the simplest option to begin with - have you tried rebooting your PC?

Unfortunately, from what you describe, if that doesn't fix it the most obvious answer would be that your monitor is knackered, but hopefully that's not the case. If a reboot doesn't help, do you know how to take a screenshot? If so, send me one and Dave & I will have a look and see if we can suggest anything.

SG, it might help computer wizards to solve your problem if you tell us what browser you are using - Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome or something else? And have you tried just closing the window, as it sounds as though there may be another one behind it?

KnightOwl
02-10-2011, 20:56
One further thought occurs - it's not just something as simple as the window having been dragged partly off the edge of the screen is it? If so, you could try right-clicking on an empty spot on your taskbar at the bottom, and choose "cascade windows" - if you have lots of windows open, it might take you a few minutes to get them all moved and resized back where you want, but at least you'll be able to get at them all....worth a shot.

Something which might interest people who want to access their computers, MPs players, iplayers, etc via the internet from any where in the house without using cabling. It is called a Home Plug Adapter. You need two to start with, put one plug into an electricity socket near your router then connect, with the cable provided, between the plug and router. Place the second plug in a electricity socket anywhere in the house and connect the plug again with the cable provided, to any piece of equipment you want use access to the internet. It worksa treat and you can add more plugs but then need to connect as a network (disc provided), or turn offother plugs as it will always work with just the two plugs with building a network connection.
Sorry if everyone already knows this but it was new to me and I wanted to get iplayer on my freesat viewer and didn't have an internet connection to the lounge.
Various types available on Amazon, I bought the Solwise version.

Thanks Pat, Is this a wireless device then?

KnightOwl
05-10-2011, 11:30
Not exactly - they basically use your home's internal electrical wiring as an ethernet connection - so they're wireless in the sense that you don't specifically connect them to each other, they just use the existing wiring.

Pretty good actually - we use them to get iPlayer etc on the main TV.

Hi Maza. Thanks for reporting this and we're sorry you had a problem. There were several of us logged in during Andy's match (I was around from 7.15am thru to 10.45am) and didn't notice any problems. If anyone else DID have a problem please post about it so we can investigate.

If it's fine at home, James, then I'm afraid you're probably right - it sounds like something to do with the internet policy at your place of work - I know where I used to be there was a policy in place which prevented access to some sites altogether, and with others there was limited access eg no images or whatever - this sounds similar to me.

Oh, what have I done? Obviously hit something by mistake. All of a sudden the window changed to a narrow onel If I open a new window, it's still a norrow one. How do I get back to a full width window?

Linda
05-10-2011, 19:48
Further to the above post, I must have it something by accident. 'Cos now the screen that I can see is square with everything expanded heightways. I need to get it back how it was, filling the full width of the screen. But I've no idea why it changed.

I've now got about 3" of black space to left and right and everything is squashed up. It just suddenly went like this, I have no idea why.

If I open a window in IE, it's just the same (I'm in Chrome).

pabbers
05-10-2011, 19:56
Wonder if turning off and then turning back on would do it? That's a suggestion from a non-techy person!

KnightOwl
05-10-2011, 20:12
The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is the same advice I gave supergran a couple of days ago - try right-clicking on your taskbar at the bottom and choose cascade windows - that should move and resize any windows you have open, which might help.

If not, let me know what version of Windows you're using eg XP, Vista, Windows 7...?

Edit: alternatively, Pat's advice above might work - a few weeks ago, our kitten walked across my keyboard, and I ended up with the screen in some weird mode I've never seen or heard of before - nothing I did made any difference, but the old switch-off-and-on-again worked a treat :)

Linda
05-10-2011, 20:15
That doesn't help. I'm using Chrome, but if I try IE it's just the same. So the problem is in my computer settings, not my browser settings. I'm on Windows 7

pabbers
05-10-2011, 20:20
My suggestion was based on it being your pc settings and so i thought switching off and on might work if the current setting isn't saved. See KO's edit above - says that worked for her the other day.

Linda
05-10-2011, 20:30
I've restarted twice and it's still the same. Everything is squashed up. Makes it hard to read the text, and of course when I try to watch livestream tomorrow everyone will be tall and thin

KnightOwl
05-10-2011, 20:36
I've looked through all the screen settings on my Windows 7 laptop, and I can't see much that looks like it would help - the only thing maybe is if you right-click on your desktop, choose Screen Resolution and have a play with the Resolution and Orientation settings - it may be that you've somehow ended up with a 4:3 style resolution on a wide screen monitor?

If that's no use I'm out of my depth :) Dave is out at a photography club meeting, but I'll ask him when he gets home...

System restore to yesterday should sort it.

Depending what caused the problem, that should sort it (as long as your machine is configured to save restore points, of course!)

Do you know how to do a system restore, Linda? You said you were Windows 7 so if you go to Control Panel there will be a "Recovery" option and System Restore is under that. It will offer you the most recent one as a default, or you can ask it to show you a list if you want to go back further.

JAMES4578
06-10-2011, 12:16
Yes the system restore is often very useful and should hopefully fix the problem.

Linda

Hawkeye

Finally got it sorted! KnightOwl was right, I thought that seemed the most likely answer, but I couldn't find how to adjust it before. I was on the right resolution of 1920x1080 but it seemed to be fixed at 4:3 aspect ratio. I couldn't find anywhere to change that, either through the PC or on the menu on the remote for the TV/Monitor. If I chose a different resolution that would come with 16:9, but this monitor doesn't support other resolutions. I emailed my son and he emailed back that there would be a button on the frame of the monitor for changing the picture size. There is a row of touch buttons along the bottom of the frame but I never use them 'cos I can't see them. So I got a torch and looked closely. There wasn't one for adjusting the picture size, but there was one for menu. So I tried that and it was a different menu to the one on the remote. I had to fiddle around for ages looking at different things but finally I found where I could change the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9. Success!

But I haven't got a clue as to how it suddenly changed whilst I was using it.

Thanks to everyone for all their suggestions and specially to KnightOwl.

When I switched on my laptop tonight, before the windows password came up I got a strange screen. I did not write down the details but it said something like press F2 for settings F1 for default or Esc for BBS something or other. Its not something I have got before. I made a guess and pressed F1.

Everything seemed to load OK. Then I decided to get into hotmail. I get a message saying it is not a trusted site.

Technical Details
login.live.com uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate will not be valid until 28/09/2011 1:00 AM. The current time is 15/01/2007 11:28 PM.

(Error code: sec_error_expired_certificate)

I Understand the Risks

If you understand what's going on, you
can tell Firefox to start trusting this site's identification.
Even if you trust the site, this error could mean that someone is
tampering with your connection.
Don't add an exception unless
you know there's a good reason why this site doesn't use trusted identification.

I have never had this problem with hotmail before. Not sure whether to go in.

A virus/spyware scan was run early evening and I am running another now.

davech
13-10-2011, 23:15
Your PC has somehow forgotten the correct date/time (it thinks it's 2007!), so the browser thinks the certificate isn't valid yet. Fix the date on your PC, and the error will go away.

I'm not sure what the F1, F2 thing was, unless your PC has crashed, and it's giving you the Windows boot options?

VamosVixs
13-10-2011, 23:20

Hawkeye
13-10-2011, 23:49
You'll need to open it up, yes, and somewhere on the motherboard will be a watch style battery, usually a 2032 size, which you need to replace. It's usually really easy. It's what provides the power to keep the time and date when the system is shut down.

If I click on the battery icon I get a message saying battery is 96% available (plugged in but not charging). Consider changing your battery.

I'm needing to watch the tennis on my laptop :help:its a different battery hawk is refering to its the cmos battery,(cmos tells your hardware what to do on boot before your hard drive etc kick in) on laptops they tend to be in under a little flap in the compartment that houses the power-pack battery remove that first and there should be a little screw that will reveal the battery
vixs changing it on your is honestly straight forward, if you look on you tube for changing cmos battery there should be vis its a 2 minute job only real danger is accidently knocking somthing trying to get the battery out and of course remove the power lead from the back of the tower before ever going inside

ah then yes, not a hp per chance ?

Unforutnately there is not hidden compartment behind where the big battery is for a BIOS battery.

I have managed to speak to the guy in the computer shop where I bought my laptop, eventually. He reckons the BIOS battery may be very hard to find so have to take my laptop in (of course this is just when I am away from home for a week or two :grrr:). But he also reckons that its very strange that both batteries have gone at the same time, so he is wondering whether there is something else wrong, eg a circuit, or the charger, and he is not so sure buying a laptop battery will fix it, unless the BIOS battery needs a little bit of charge in the main battery for it to work. :glum:

KnightOwl
15-10-2011, 15:58
The other thing that occurs to me would be a motherboard issue, unfortunately. I have been doing some googling for you, but not found much of help - batteries for your model are fairly easy to get hold of for around £30-£35 but I haven't been able to find anything very helpful about the CMOS battery - for other ASUS models, but not yours.

I agree with what your shop chap said about it being odd both batteries going at once, and I did read a few forum posts from people with your laptop who said they'd had various battery-related errors, but when they took the laptop in to be fixed, it was replacing the motherboard which actually solved the problem - whether that is a possibility for a 3-4 year old laptop I'm not sure.

Sorry I couldn't be more help

Here's one for the experts.

My laptop quite often shows connected to the router but not the internet and troubleshooters suggest that the gateway needs repaired which sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. The confusing bit is that the PC also has a wireless connection and my daughter can work away quite happily while all this is going on.

I have checked that I have the latest drivers for the laptop network adapter, and resetting it doesn't always work either.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. And yes, its an HP!

-J-
23-10-2011, 11:13
if you bring up a run box ( in the start menu) and type "cmd" (leaving out the speech mark :)) this will bring up a command line box in here type "ipconfig /renew" this will force the adapter to isue with a new ip address set which more often than not will cure it
incidentally do you know who handles the wireless within your laptop is it windows or third party software on the laptop ? (my bets third party)

AllyB

I am with talktalk and have dynamic ip addressing. Sometimes I find that my internet stops working, but is still working for someone else in my house at the same time, or sometimes it stops for everyone. When this happens I switch the router off and wait a minute or two and switch it back on. Often this does the trick - it usually changes my ip address when I do this. Once when that did not work I phoned my service provider and got put through to their techies and they tweeked the line somewhere.

if you bring up a run box ( in the start menu) and type "cmd" (leaving out the speech mark :)) this will bring up a command line box in here type "ipconfig /renew" this will force the adapter to isue with a new ip address set which more often than not will cure it
incidentally do you know who handles the wireless within your laptop is it windows or third party software on the laptop ? (my bets third party)

Just had a chance to try it, and it worked straight away. Is this likely to be a permanent cure? Or will i just need to do that every time?

Yesterday I couldn't watch tennistv.com at all as it just kept buffering. I found another stream and that seemed to be working OK. But today tennistv is just as bad. I tried opening it in IE and it wouldn't start playing at all. At the moment I'm watching a stream of SkySportsNews which seemed fine at first but is now buffering really badly too. What could be wrong? I've run a bandwidth test and I have plenty of bandwidth.

I've done those things and it hasn't helped. There is another problem too that's been happening for the past few days which may or may not be related. You know when your cursor changes to a double-headed arrow for changing the size of your window? Well lately it keeps getting stuck like that. The only way to clear it is by doing Ctrl-Alt-Delete.

OK I was ages on the online chat to the help on tennistv. They had me check all sorts of things, uninstall and reinstall flash, and none of it helped.

Then Sean came home from work and changed the router again. It's fine again now. We'd had that router for less than two months. This must be the ninth or tenth router I've had since I've had broadband. Why on earth, I wonder, do they not last?

I have eventually managed to get a BIOS battery in my laptop :) But the guys in the shop had to take my laptop to bits to get at it as it was very inaccessible. It wasn't just a case of unscrewing a few screws at the back of the laptop. So it wasn't cheap :crying:. They said manufacturers do it on purpose to encourage people buying new laptops!

:help: My laptop saga continues.

I am down at my Dad's again and cannot get wireless internet to work. The shop had taken my laptop to bits to get the BIOS battery in last week.
If I put my laptop in the normal place I use it, it doesn't register that there is a wireless internet at all. If I put my laptop a couple of feet from the router sometimes I get a signal but not most of the time. It does register on my laptop that there is wireless around though but states no signal.

My internet access is fine when connected via a cable, which is what I do at home.

Someone else can get wireless internet access with the same router with another laptop at the other end of the house!!!!

I now have my new main battery, so will put that on but I can't see why that would change anything.

Is it possible that they could have done something to interfere with my wireless internet access when taking laptop to bits to change the bios battery??? :help:

Make sure there network isn't set up twice by accident (it happens to my sister twice with wireless, she was able to connect very close range and won't work normal range). Check by going to "Control Panel", (if your control panel is sorted by category then click on "Network and Internet"), then "Networking and Sharing Center", then on left side "Manage wireless networks" and check the list. If you got more than one same network then remove it.

If that don't work or you only got one network there then remove it and add it back on again clicking on wireless icon right side desktop bar to connect.

Hope it works............

cazza99
10-11-2011, 15:38
Thanks Speedy. This one was not doubled up, but there were some redundant ones not in use.

I zapped all of them and recreated the one for this router (twice). I can access wireless close to router (about 2 feet away) but still not in the other rooms I usually use my laptop. :grrr: :grrr:

my first suggestion would be to uninstall the drivers for your wireless card and reinstall them (i would check & download them from the manufactures first ) its possible they have been corrupted
as for is it possible they have dislodge/damaged your network card while solving your bios problem , i would say its very possible the fact it works at close range suggests they may have done summit to the antenna (built in)
oops forgot to say reboot lappy between uninstall and reinstall

cazza99
12-11-2011, 13:49
Thanks Jay. I telephoned the guys who put in my BIOS battery. They said that my laptop has 2 antennae connected to my wireless card and that all that area was moved when they had to take my laptop to bits to put the BIOS battery in, so they admitted it was quite possible its the antennae. So I'll have to take my laptop back to them when I get home next week :(

-J-
12-11-2011, 14:05
it dose seem the most likely answer, in the meantime deepening on your type of laptop and availability of stores in your current location you could get a PCMCIA wifi card for around a tenner

cazza99
19-11-2011, 13:04
Got my laptop fixed :):)

When they opened the laptop up the wires from the 2 antennae were not attached to the wireless card!!!!!!! I'm surprised I got a signal at all close up to the router. I just hope the wires stay in place as they did not look that firmly fixed. I'll have to take the laptop back and get them more permanently fixed on if they fall off.

My laptop has died .... I was in a hurry yesterday trying to get it to come on and it wasn't keen to boot up - had to give up as we were running late, thought I'd forced shut down but when we got home later in the day it seemed to still be on. Closed it down, powered it up and it wouldn't let me enter the password - windows booted up to the login screen but the mouse wouldn't respond, nor would the keyboard. Switched it off again and now it won't do anything at all - when you press the power button, the Toshiba screen appears but it won't respond to any keys being pressed for menus, and then it goes to a black screen with the cursor top left but not flashing .... any ideas? :help:

I can't get Firefox to load and get this message.

I'm a bit worried about uninstalling and reinstalling cos I may lose my bookmarks. Or would I lose them?

I remember getting some message coming up on my laptop asking me which addons I want to keep or delete (which I have never seen before) - and wonder if this caused it.

I'm not sure about the message above, but you can backup the bookmarks yourself, so that you can restore them if they are lost when you reinstall the browser.

They're stored in a folder called places.sqlite in your Firefox profile - you can open this by selecting Help->Troubleshooting information from Firefox, then you should see a button which will open your profile folder in explorer, so you can take a manual copy of the places.sqlite file.

Once you've uninstalled and reinstalled, it should just be a case of navigating back to the profile folder and replacing the default places file with the one you backed up.

Edit: if Firefox won't start up at all, so you can't get to the menu, you should be able to search for the profile folder - it will be in your application data somehere, probably under Mozilla - easiet is probably to search for places.sqlite as that file name should be pretty unique.

When I loaded up Mozilla Firefox this morning all was fine and it loaded my home page which is Google.
For some reason I've now got an extra blue bar relating to Google+ with some add-ons to the normal Google bar - to the left a +You and to the right a new 'Sign in' prompt alongside a white cog wheel.

Anyone got any advice?

:hmm:well if you didnt ask for it then you dont need it
to get rid of it will take one of two things you either click view and uptick google +
or you go to add on and disable remove it
one or other should work im just not sure if its a toolbar as such or a add on

Because I'd been having a few problems with hotmail, I decided a while ago that I'd use my gmail account instead. But I couldn't log in. I went through all the normal channels re forgotten login but they decided that I hadn't proved that it was my account so I couldn't use it. (NB my full name is very uncommon so very unlikely that someone else has it) So I left it for then. Then today I thought, well I'll try again but use my Twitter name instead. But again I'm told that that username is already in use

ETA - OK I have now tried every possible combination of my first name or initial and surname, stuff like lindalinda etc., but every time it tells me that username is already in use

ETA - I've now managed to set up an account by putting iam in front of my usual login name. Still had problems with password, though, it wouldn't accept any of the ones I normally use

I subscribed to Eurosport Player last night, so I can watch matches not on the main channels.

However when I am trying to go full screen I get a "silverlight" error. A silverlight box comes up asking me if I wish to keep the fullscreen up all the time and then my computer hangs and I get an error message saying that silverlight has crashed.

The Eurosport player help section is telling people having silverlight problems to email a printscreen of their graphic info to their support which is what I have done and I am awaiting their reply. Thought I had better mention it in case anyone else has these problems. I hope they can resolve it.

This is what the Eurosport help page says

The error you are experiencing with the "Full Screen" functionality is probably due to a compatibility problem between your graphic /audio card and Microsoft Silverlight technology used by Eurosport Player.

if you mean you have swapped hard drives then it is very feasible that who ever reformatted your computer failed/forgot to add the graphics drivers and you are running on some generic microsoft one again looking for an update wouldnt go amiss
third option is the two things are unrelated and you are adding 2 =2 to get 5
if the above fails to work try a different browser

Anybody have any experience with BT Broadband / Homehub 3.0? - tearing my hair out already and it's only been a couple of days.

I'd been with my current ISP for several years but it started getting slower and slower recently until I was barely getting 1Mbps and thought enough was enough - (the bt "estimate" for the line is 5-6 Meg.)
BT had replaced the cable to the house last year so that's ok and I had checked the speed into the main box bypassing the house wiring and it made little difference so I decided that my dusty old router was past it and time for a new shiny one.
I decided to go with BT for the free wi-fi time you get, so you can go and park outside somebody's house late at night who's got BTFOn activated on their router.

Anyway the shiny new Homehub arrived, and after a few days without internet (long story and basic schoolgirl error on my part) i got it up and running.
I know there is an initial 10 day stabilisation period - but it's supposed to settle down after the first hour or so. I was gutted when instead of the 4 meg or so I was hoping for, it was even slower than before. In fact testing it last night the upload speed was even faster than the download speed!

And worse still the wireless coverage is pants! - my old b/g router upstairs in a bedroom would give an "excellent" coverage and full bars through most of the house.
Now the new shiny wireless 'n' homehub gives me one bar at most in the same location - i'd even got a new wireless n card for the laptop specially as I believed it was the holy grail - but instead of connecting at the supposed 130 MBps it's around 40 which is also less than the old setup.

So does anybody have any experience of the 10 day period with BT and how much the speed can actually fluctuate, and also with the homehub 3.0 and how to get a decent signal from it?

cheers

What a pain, Rondun! For starters, I'm no techy - far from it. But......I think we had a similar experience recently when we changed to faster broadband and had to have a new router (modem???). Anyway BT had to provide and fit it and do the broadband upgrade to fibreoptic at our socket. The engineer tested it and told us we now had whatever (can't remember but it was supposed to be way faster). We then tried it after he'd left and like you, it was slower. Called him back - watched him test it at the socket and it said it was faster. In the end he said we needed to contact our ISP which we did and (now this is where you'll have to excuse me for being even more vague) it turned out to be something they had to do at their end to make the service compatible with what BT had done at our end. Anyway, suffice to say it worked. So it could be something similar in your case.

Otherwise if BT is your ISP I can only offer my sympathy - we wouldn't touch BT with a bargepole as an ISP after past experiences too numerous and long to recount!

Cheers Pabbers,

Router/modem/homehub = all the same thing as far as i'm concerned - plus I can only dream of fibreoptic bb!
Still in the good ol' "up to 8MB but in reality you'll get nowhere near that" broadband with promises of ADSL2+ in the future

Although this isn't what I wanted to hear after signing up to 18 months with them!...

Otherwise if BT is your ISP I can only offer my sympathy - we wouldn't touch BT with a bargepole as an ISP after past experiences too numerous and long to recount!
Never really had any issues with my old provider other than the slow speed and they said there was nothing they could do about that.
What convinced me to go to BT was the free wifi at openzone hotspots as I spent a fortune on mobile broadband last year when all I really needed it for was checking emails and doing a bit of surfing.
Wonder if anybody has used their BT internet to connect to BTFON / openzone? - be interested to see how good it is in reality.

Anyway - day 2 update for anybody going through the same thing (and for my complaint diary when it all goes wrong!)
First off, I accidentally figured out how to increase the connection from a homehub 3 - simple put it on an upstairs floor and knock it over so its lying flat facing down and not at the jaunty angle BT would like you to look at it! - Result: "poor" 45Mbps connection jumps to an "Excellent" 130.0 Mbps when connected from downstairs where I use it most.

After achieving a top speed of about 1.2 meg on day 1 and a low of about 0.4 in the evening, testing increased to 2.4 initially on day 2 to 5.7 in the afternoon - with a 6.3 max. (which is higher that the BT estimate for the line)
Weird thing was, at first I had it plugged straight into the master socket to see if it would stabilise at a higher speed, then moved it onto an extension socket in a more convenient location at night.
I'm guessing these speeds will come back down again as the line finds a "stable" speed over the 10 day period.

BTW- i'm using the thinkbroadband speedtest the most, as although it usually gives a lower speed than some of the other "burst" speed tests, I think it's more consistent and gives a more accurate result representative of what you get when you're using the net.

Anyway today for the first time in a long while I could actually watch youtube videos and iplayer without waiting for the buffering sign to appear!

Internet speed always changing up or down. Virgin does same. Very slow sometimes and medium okay and rarely fast good speed.

I don't use a wireless router and instead I have a cable going from my router to my lounge which I use for my laptop. However I am also going to need a cable connection for my sky+ box and I only have one cable connection in the lounge.

Something weird is going on with my web browser.

I'm currently working in Mozilla Firefox which is my default. I've been working so away from my computer for 2/3 hours and I've just come back to look something up on google.

But it won't load up the browser page at all ...
Even this from my favourites - http://start.mozilla.org/firefox/
"The requested URL /firefox/ was not found on this server."

When I open a new tab or window and click on the Firefox Home key, or the Firefox start icon on my desktop it comes up with a 404 'not found on this server'. But it's clearly working or I wouldn't be able to continue to send messages in here 'cos AMFF is loaded in FF. I've just opened a new tab and loaded the BBC website using a link in my Bookmarks and that worked AOK. I also typed google direct into the top search bar and it loaded up.

Anyone have any clues?
I've not uninstalled anything and it was fine 3hrs ago ......

KnightOwl
24-04-2012, 22:26
Not sure, but I suspect the problem is their end (ie Firefox) because I get the same error when I click on your link above. Maybe they've changed the URL of their start page? Seems unlikely, because you'd expect them to do that as part of an upgrade, but possible.

I don't use their default homepage, though, I use google, so I can't be sure.

You could try waiting til tomorrow and see if it fixes itself, or you could try updating Firefox to make sure you're on the latest version?

Sallydaisy

You could try waiting til tomorrow and see if it fixes itself, or you could try updating Firefox to make sure you're on the latest version?
Hmm, well I've updated Firefox which cleared my cache.
This morning I clicked on the Mozilla shortcut (the old one) and it comes up with
"Not Found The requested URL /firefox was not found on this server."
What used to come up was the Google search page as my default 'home' page.

However, Firefox is loaded because to get into here all I had to do was click on the bookmarks as usual. The updated version does not like my webmail provider in advanced mode, only in basic (i.e. all browsers) and that's a bit of a pain. So, presumably it is to do with resetting something that connects FF to Google so it comes up as it used to.

As I'm working today I've no time to look into this until later this afternoon ...

EDIT:
Got rid of the annoying 404 by setting FF to open with "a blank page" instead of "my home page" ...

EDIT:
Ooooh, think I've fixed it ... saved google url as home page link.

Yes, Firefox is the browser application, so in theory it should always "load" whether it's connected to anything or not...

Don't know if you've sorted this out yet but like Pat says it sounds like a heat problem. You may want to find out the maximum operating temperature of your processor and graphics card/chip, then download a program like HWMonitor. Keep it open whilst using your laptop and see what your temperatures are. If they're close to the maximum that's very likely your problem.

You may have already checked this but is the microphone disabled? Right click on the speaker icon on your taskbar, select 'Recording devices'. There should be a microphone icon. If it says it's diabled right click on it and selecting enable should fix your problem.

If the microphone icon isn't there, right click on any icon that is there and make sure that the 'Show disconnected devices' and 'Show disabled devices' are ticked. If the microphone icon doesn't show up then I'm not sure what else you can do if you've already installed the audio driver.

have you tried device manager( bring up a run box and type mmc devmgt.and) in there you will find all hardware your microphone should be listed there by selecting it you should be able to enable,/disable it or update drivers if necessary

:grouphug: Sally. I spilt something on my laptop a while back and I immediately turned it upside down to let to dry and it worked OK later. But I have no idea if that is what I should have done.

Depends if there was any sugar in the tea.

No = good news.
Yes = possibly bad news.

No sugar - but a single Canderel sweetener ...
Is that good or bad???

I think it will be fine. I've spilt all kinds of things on my keyboard and it hasn't done it any harm.

:shamed::shamed::shamed:

I've spilt a mug of tea over my desktop keyboard .....
:sofa:

Can anyone suggest what to do?
I turned it upside down immediately to stop too much liquid getting into the bottom and have unplugged it and left it upside down in my washbasin. Should I just let it have time to dry out - perhaps in the airing cupboard and then see what's what?

:phew:

Keyboard AOK.
I put it on a shelf in the airing cupboard overnight and it seems to be functioning normally so far.

Which means I shall have no excuse and must get on with some work to do today!

Telly problem.

Picture from either FreeSat box or DVD player is black, white and wavery through 3 different SCART cables.

I'm thinking SCART socket problem - is it likely to be anything fixable?

My wife has been getting inundated with calls and texts from strangers for a few days now.

The texts claim that she is "Tom Evans" and the mobile number is posted on Tom Evans facebook page. Neither Google nor Facebook search come up with any results for her number either 07... or +447...

Is there anything we can do? Changing number would cause major problems so is a last resort.

Thanks

Ally

It sounds as though her phone provider has issued her number to another user.
Have you contacted them to check/report it/complain???
It shouldn't happen but numbers are re-issued I think after a period of time when people change number/account so it could be an error from them?

Otherwise can you contact Facebook to deal with Tom Evans account?

Not a woe as such, but looking for a recommendation for a web host/sitebuilder to start up a relatively simple website for my wife's new business venture. Any recommendations? Not wanting to spend too much but usability is more important than cost.

Thanks

Edit: Kind of made a start with a free trial of Moonfruit but found some poor reviews

My son and daughter in law build and maintain web sites. I will PM you his email address and if you are interested give him a call.

I'm on my Kindle on the streamhunter website and constantly tapping the download button for their 'Download our new app - watch all live streams' but nothing is happening :grrr: If only I'd bought a Kindle earlier, apparently the first version had flash but the latest version doesn't. I've been looking online to see what I need to do to get it, and apparently I need to install a different operating system before I can install flash. Think I will leave it as it is for the time being.

Having the same problem on my Smart TV can get the TEnnisTv site and sign in but can't stream because lack of flash player. Installed browser can't show downloading page. Unfortunately smart TVs based on mobile phone technology!

:help: I've just stored a Word document I have amended into a temporary area by mistake, but can't find it. Does anyone have an idea where to look. It does not come up in searches. I have Windows 7.

It was an extracted zip file.
