DUBAI 2012, ROUND 1: Andy battles past Berrer 6'3, 4'6, 6'4

His first round match in Dubai is scheduled for Tuesday and first on court.
He'll play Michael Berrer against whom he has a 2-0 H2H (http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=MC10&oId=B678)and both those wins came last year.
First in R32 at Roland Garros 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 and again at the Tokyo 2011 event with a 6-4, 6-2 win.

His 31yr old German opponent is WR115 (CH42 Aug 2010) and has come through Qualifying so he'll be used to the courts in Dubai which are reputedly quite fast. Berrer has recently been a hitting partner for Andy in his training sessions so the pair have had a look at each other's game quite recently.

It'd be surprising if Andy wasn't able to wrap this match up as easily as he's done their previous 2 encounters. And it'll be interesting to see if there are any differences to his game following on from the 10day training stint with Mr Lendl.

We'll update the thread title as soon as we know the match time.

I have found the commentary so far on Novak's match this afternoon quite nauseating. I think we all thought Andy's on-court behaviour already showed improvement at the AO even with minimal time with Ivan. In terms of helping him have more chances of winning the next point. If Andy had lost today (and luckily he found an extra gear at the end and Berrer did not play his last service game well, otherwise the way he had served at the start of that third set it was not unthinkable) I am sure we would have been analysing his on-court behaviour in a much more critical light.
I always wonder whether Andy just goes AWOL for a few points or whether some niggle is causing him to make so many UEs....
Anyway, if he plays Davydenko next, even though he does not seem to be in his prime, Andy will know he will want to show he still has game against a top player and Andy should be more focused, after the first match.
Dubai Report card: satisfactory progress, but move up a gear next match please in terms of tennis and focus.

It started so well with an initial break of serve and then in the third it was pretty awful and the "old" Andy looked in danger of rearing its ugly head. However I thought he coped ok and berated himself but was not shouting / swearing like he has previously done so a good sign Andy - well done for that.

Sorry Alis but there is nothing on the ATP site just yet. There's never any set time by which the OOP's have to be published and they're only halfway through the night session in Dubai so it might be another couple of hours before we know.

Re stomach churning - I was far too taken up with my stomach to think about Andy's! But mine is fine now - hope his is too. So glad he battled through and got the win.
