Ahhhh, feeling sorry for Andy... If only he hadn't made all those mistakes.
Congrats Nole!
Disappointing. Andy just didn't serve well enough today at all.when dose he ever :rolling: but normally we can rely on him at least breaking back
dont think it helped him all the days off the week(perversely)
Congrats to Nole - definitely deserved to win on today's play. If "2nd set Andy" had come out at the start of the match it might have been a different story. Some great play from Andy, but not often enough. Serving wasn't at its best. The points where he looked to take the initiative were so much more full of intent and purpose. Wish he'd do it more often. Nole always seems to be looking to come forward, hit the corners, finish the point.
Still, a vast improvement on last year, so well done over all Andy. On to the red stuff!
disappointing game, was just constantly pushed back and overpowered by djo. serve poor, df in tiebreak didn't help.
I've just arrived home....(great timing....) what was going so badly wrong with his serve?

Disappointing Andy couldn't really produce today. Certainly got something going in the 2nd but just couldn't win the big points and that double in the breaker really was a blow!:sad: Nole played well but he certainly could've been challenged more today. Still Andy can take the positives from the tournament. Of cvourse may not have been the only reason but the lack of matches didn't help.
At least the points for being in the final will be useful. Congrats to Nole though.

Didn't enjoy that match at all; it was such a slug-fest and I didn't think either of them played that well. I was disappointed watching Andy because it was so frustrating knowing that he can play so much better on hard courts. He seemed to have very little by way of game plan and yet he's known for his 'tennis-brain'. I'm quite puzzled actually as to why he didn't seem able to lift himself up a level and his serve was really not up there at all today.
I love watching Andy play and spent most of the last 2hrs willing him to find his mojo and a way to win. So sad to see him lose because I know he can beat Novak .......
Credit to the Serbian, he went for it in the first set and held on despite everything Andy threw at him in the 2nd. He deserved the win but I don't think he played to his best level either.
Hum ho.
Roll on the devil dirt ...........

disappointing result just not good enough on the day shame
such are the marginsi in tennis especially playing nole now adays, its so hard to put the ball past him,its hardly surprising that he can make others look a little lost at times
Disappointing, but Andy can't expect to win a match against the world no.1 playing that inconsistently. He was second best to Novak in every department today.

Maybe still not feeling too good. But no doubt Djoker had the edge all the way through, with a couple of exceptions he was holding serve much more easily than Andy.
Overall Andy did ok, the first set was a bit of a shambles, but it always looks worse against the best in the world.
He did better in the second set, but I think he did waste a few promising positions.
As we know, its a work in progress, and the last three weeks have been really tough for him. 5 matches is all he's played, so I think it must have been incredibly tough to get a rhythm going. Hopefully now he can go away and view the clay as a fresh start.
It would be great to see him get to a clay court final or two this year, that'll be a real step forward.

Totally agree. It looks like he was intimidated and a lack of confidence, shame if he is going to be like that against the top 3. he is too good a player, there was no fight in him.

Yes disappointing first set.
Good fight back second set.
Missed lots of chances.
Serve pretty poor today, needed to be more aggressive all round.
Djoko really pulls it out when needed.

No there definitely was fight,
You've got to remember how little tennis he has played compared to Novak this week, literally half the time less. That doesn't mean either that Andy had the upper hand, these aren't best of 5 setters, you need to consistently play matches to get rhythm. He FOUGHT in the second set, it just wasn't to be.
To be quite honest, the fact he's somehow walked away with a runner up spot this week, I think its a small miracle, it's been such an odd one. Take the points and move on, this tournament feels a little irrelevant to me based upon whats gone on.

I thought he fought back in the 2nd set and very nearly made it through to the 3rd; just perhaps needed a bit more aggression and confidence.
To put it in perspective ...
5 tournaments played this year so far - 1 Win, 2 Finals, 1 Semi and 1 R64 exit.

Well said Sam. Feel a bit gutted that we saw little of the Andy magic - he really didn't come up with anything special. Serve was off - especially out wide in the Ad court - and his service return was much weaker than usual which is why he didn't make the break points. Novak may have felt a little rattled towards the end of the second set but he never really looked in trouble.
Maybe it was a lack of match practice. Hopefully there wont be the disappointed lull after what was a bit of a disappointing performanceas he will be with Ivan working hard for the Clay swing and wont have too much time to think about it.

Not too shabby a set of stats!
I thought Andy did as best as he could under the circumstances. The first set was obviously very difficult and the lack of matchplay cost him. It's understandable - normally a finalist has had to play excellent tennis to get there but that wasn't the case for Andy with his two walkovers and then feeling ill in his last match. If he'd played against Rafa and won then that would have given him the much-needed rhythm and confidence going into today. It must have been difficult for him going into a match against Novak not really knowing exactly what kind of form he was in and also not knowing how the semifinal walkover was going to affect him. First serve percentage normally goes hand-in-hand with confidence with Andy - if it had been higher then he'd have been able to play more aggressively more often.
The second set was a really good mental performance from Andy, fighting back from 0-30 several times, and saving break points. He could have easily lost 6-1, 6-3 but he worked very hard to keep holding onto his serve. And in that set he showed that he does have the game to make things very difficult for Novak. Novak was definitely the better player overall today though and deserves his win - his defensive tennis is outstanding.

Disappointed - didn't see too much of Andy's brilliance though we saw alot of his fighting spirit. Onwards and upwards (again) - needs to beat Nole again for psychological progress.
Still I've just had a bet on Andy to win Wimbledon so I must still have faith!

At the end of the day Nole is the better player, he has set the benchmark which Andy needs to follow. And he is making progress in doing so. He is improving and has had a good year. AO SF highlighted Andy's improvements.
Unfortunately missed the tiebreak, shame that Andy lost in the end. Not playing his best today and showed some fight in the 2nd set but by then it was a bit late after that poor 1st set. Onwards and upwards though and hopefully Lendl will give some inspiration to Andy for the clay court season.

Know it was a different Nole today, bit Andy just didn't play with the freedom he did in the Dubai encounter or some parts of the Aus match which was a bit frustrating but I'm sure Andy will learn from this match. Hoped Andy would have more than a 250 title at this stage but sure there will be bigger titles this year!

So Andy lost. Can't say I'm really surprised, I thought the withdrawals (lack of match play) would hurt him. Thank goodness he did not fall in the first match, now he's gained a few points on Fed.
Right! Monte Carlo next. Andy reached the semis last year, can he do better?

Agree with all that, Katie. Djoko played brilliantly but Andy was definitely ring rusty today.

Spot on Sam!
Sad that Andy lost and that he didn't play as well as we know he could have :( Not sure the 2 walkovers helped him as he would have lost momentum and sharpness. But putting it all into perspective... A much better post AO than last year!

Had to watch the match on replay mode with tennistv as I had to work during the final.
Although Andy put up a fight in the second, and a third would have been anybody's, looking at both their faces towards the end of the second set, overall I though Nole was clearly a better player on the day.
From what I have seen of Andy this week, I do not think he was as on fire as he was at the AO or even Dubai. Not sure why and not sure everything is 100% OK.
What may well be the case is Andy is in a transitioning phase - it has been mentioned before but one consequence of working with Lendl seems to be a lot more UEs - not criticising in saying this, but rather that Andy will be getting it wrong on the way to getting it right. This might explain some past, present and future losses this year. Just hope he works it out in time!

Dammit so he did. I read somewhere else that he had two titles this year and in my mind transformed that loss into a win!
Yes, disappointed but Andy and Mr lendl are still a work in progress. We all said at the AO that it would take time, even though Andy played great there. Let's hope he is at his peak for Wimbledon folks.
Watched the recording and was very disappointed. Andy's serve is still not good enough - it's such a shame that that's one of the biggest holes in his game and they can't seem to patch it. Some of the average players can serve better. Also what happened to hugging the baseline? Andy seemed to be playing Nole at Nole's game i.e. a line painting slugfest. Andy didn't really play his own game, mixing his game up or pushing Nole out of his comfort zone. I guess the lack of matches didn't help but Andy needs to match up to the top 3 on a more regular basis and undermine their confidence that they can beat him.
Bring on the clay and hopefully a surprise when least expected!
This was actually Andy giving a lot of the match away. He can play much better than that. But for most of the match he was content to stay way behind the baseline, return shots directly into Nole's hitting zone, and hope that Nole would make a mistake. You're not going to win important tournaments that way. But I know that Andy can play much better than that, so it was rather disappointing that he didn't.
