Wow! What a run - new Olympic Record 9.63!!
Blake took silver & Gatlin bronze...I think!
How could you doubt it?
Props to CJ (ah well maybe not it's been rounded to .63)

When's 200m final?
Only Powell who pulled up didn't run under 10s
KnightOwl

Excluding Asafa Powell, who pulled up in the last few metres, all of the runners were sub-10 seconds - awesome!
Also, Steve Cram just said that the gold, silver & bronze medallists all ran the fastest ever times for those positions - incredible!

Good grief! Yohan Blake may not be the fastest on the track, but he's definitely the fastest talker :big grin:
Amazing how they manage to pad out a 10 second race to at least 10 minutes with the preparations, slow-mo repeats, mini-interviews etc! :rolling:

Apologies for over-posting, but this stuff is all brilliant :)
Another magic moment in the studio, with Denise Lewis getting excited, and Colin Jackson screaming "Here comes Gatlin! Look at whats-his-name! There goes the Big Man! The Big Man..."
Wonderful :)
He later admitted "whats-his-name" was Yohan Blake...

Yes! I saw that - forgot about it in all the excitement - it looked like one of the beer bottles they sell at the Olympic Park - plastic luckily! Who on earth does something like that on such an occasion?!?
Somebody who just emptied it

ATHLETICS (20:45): Dai Greene, men's 400m hurdles final
Dai Greene might be the reigning world champion but the Welshman has a huge task on his hands to add Olympic gold after scraping into the final with the seventh-fastest time. Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico's Javier Culson qualified fastest. Holly Bleasdale has joined the elite in the women's pole vault over the last year and could be in the mix for medals (19:00-21:06), with world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva the favourite.

Lisa Dobriskey and Hannah England are both through to the Women's 1500m semi-finals - Hannah finished fifth in her heat, which was a great result considering her recent injury concerns, and Lisa cruised home to win her heat, looking very comfortable.
In other news, Michael Rimmer suprisingly failed to qualify in the Men's 800m. Gareth Warburton also failed to qualiffy, less surprisingly, but Andrew Osagie did what he needed to do, so we will at least have one athlete representing Great Britain in Lord Coe's signature event at the London 2012 Olympics :)
Edit: more good news - Laura Weightman scraped through her 1500m heat, so all three British woment are through to the semi-finals!

Great Britain's Lawrence Okoye is safely through to tomorrows Discus final, qualifying in fourth place after a slightly dodgy start!
Lawrence Okoye gets the big build-up from the public address announcer as he prepares for his first throw in discus qualifying. He promptly nearly decapitates a pair of photographers as his throw skews out of his hand. It is outside the permitted angle and is racked up as a foul on the scoreboard. Okoye looks accusingly at his chalk-dusted palms.
Quote from BBC Sport Olympics Day 10 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/19140394) page.
Fellow Briton Abdul Buhari wasn't so fortunate, though, missing the qualifying distance by almost 5m.

Wow - some fairly dramatic developments in the Olympic Stadium:
Drama in the athletics heats this morning where Algerian 1500m medal contender Taoufik Makhloufi has been thrown out of the Olympics for not trying in his 800 heat.
Makhloufi, who won his 1500m semi-final in style, had been forced to run in the two lap race after his team failed to withdraw him from it by Sunday's deadline. The 24-year-old lined up at the start of heat five but was already well behind the field at the start of the back straight before stopping running completely another 100m into the race and wandering back across the infield past the pole vault area.
"The referee considered that he had not provided a bona fide effort and decided to exclude him from participation in all further events in the competition," read an IAAF statement.

Perri Shakes-Drayton came third in her 400m hurdles semi, but it was a slowish race, so not sure if that will be enough to get her through - only two go through by right, and two fastest losers, so could be very tight.
Eilidh Child had a really tough draw in lane 8 and never looked like she was going to challenge for a place in the final. She came round the final bend in last place, but put on a strong spurt at the end to finish 7th :)

Holly seems to be coming to terms with her disappointment - which is great, as she looked totally distraught at the end
British pole vaulter Holly Bleasdale on BBC Radio 5 live: "I am really disappointed, but to come top eight in my first Olympic final is pretty good. I felt I could have done so much better as I did not handle the wind very well. I am really privileged to have competed in front of a crowd like this. I think I was lacking experience, as when the other girls come to a competition they know what to expect, and I don't. Hopefully, by Rio, I will be at the top of my game."

Holly Bleasdale seems to be a bit happier this morning :big grin:
Last night started with disappointment for Britain's Holly Bleasdale who dropped out at 4.55m in the pole vault final, well short of her British record of 4.87m, to finish joint sixth. It improved markedly though when her boyfriend Paul Bradshaw produced an Olympic ring of his own and proposed later on in the evening. She said yes to sign the lad up on a long-term deal.
Great Britain's Holly Bleasdale on BBC Radio 5 Live: "It was the best evening of my life! I was really happy with coming sixth. I didn't realise at the time where I had come. My boyfriend took me down a little canal which was very pretty then got down on one knee and proposed. It was so pretty. I said yes obviously!
"It was a total surprise. People thought I would get a medal, I just wanted top six. It was the end to a reallty good day. When will we get married? We need a quiet year when there is no Olympics or World Championships, maybe in two years' time!"

They never do in field events like this - there were two other people who also got the same height as the three bronze medallists, but no medal for them as presumably they had more attempts at some stage, so lost out on countback. It's a bit of a weird system, but I guess that's just how it's always been done :)

Whoop! Daniel Awde just ran a PB of 10.71 in the Decathlon 100m!
Pretty darn good, since the heats are seeded based on the individual athlete's season's best times, and he was in the last heat, so up against the fastest competitors

A new British Record of 71.98 for Sophie Hitchon in the hammer throw - need to wait & see if that's enough to get her through to the final tomorrow, but she's in with a good chance now - currently lying 5th in Group A, with Group B yet to start.
Mo's safely through his 5000m heat, although that last lap looked tough. It was one of those really slow races with a crazy sprint for the line - something I think Mo could've done without. He's being interviewed now, and says he was being caught by other athletes all the way round. Sounds painful.

Two no-jumps from Daniel Awde in the decathlon long jump - he only has one more attempt to register a legal jump!
C'mon Daniel...!
Daniel has registered a jump, but he was miles behind the board. 6.83 isn't what he would've wanted, and he seems to have hurt himself, too.

Wonderful reaction from the crowd as Sarah Attar crosses the line in last place in her 800m heat - she's the first female athlete from Saudi Arabia ever to compete at the Olympic Games. I think, from what I recall being said during the Opening Ceremony, that Saudi Arabia had been the only remaining nation to exclude their women from competing, so that's quite a historic moment, and the crowd certainly gave her a rapturous welcome

I remember this happened to Daley Thompson in an Olympic decathlon once - it makes an already dangerous looking sport look potentially fatal.
Robbie Grabarz is about to receive his bronze medal. It looks a bit crowded!
Oh, and there's a Canadian in there somewhere, too. ;)
The 110m hurdles semis will be on in a bit, with both Andy Turner and Lawrence Clarke gunning for the final. Lawrence goes in the first heat, and Andy is in the second.

08-08-2012, 18:26
Gulp! Dreadful start from Turner, he seemed to get almost stuck in the blocks and although he pushed pretty hard, he was never going to catch that up, finishing in 4th place.
Lawrence Clarke was 3rd in his earlier semi-final, so basic maths will show that there's no way we can get both guys through
Edit: timings have come through - Andy Turner is definitely out, and sounds distraught in his interview, but Lawrence is still in a fastest loser position, with one more semi still to come...
KnightOwl
08-08-2012, 18:32
Third semi looked fairly slow....but was it slow enough...?
Edit: Yay! Yes it was - Lawrence Clarke is through to the final...!
It's time for the 1500m semis and Lisa Dobriskey and Hannah England both go in the first heat. The first five from each semi go through as do the two fastest losers.
Lisa is through in fourth, but Hannah was a long way back coming into the final straight and couldn't make up the distance - she came ninth.
Laura Weightman, trained by a certain Steve Cram, is up now. Steve is very nervous.
Laura gets seventh place - and she's into the final!
It's a new PB for Laura, and she gets the last fastest loser place in the final by a few thousandths of a second.
In the men's 200m semis, all the big guns are through to the final. Christian Malcolm, however, misses out.

ATHLETICS (20:55): Lisa Dobriskey and Laura Weightman, women's 1500m
Britain has a healthy representation of two finalists in the women's 1500m (20:55). Lisa Dobriskey, who considered quitting the sport earlier this year due to potentially fatal blood clots on her lungs, qualified fourth in her semi-final; Laura Weightman, coached by BBC Sport commentator and former Olympic silver medallist Steve Cram, went through as one of the two fastest losers.
The women's 5,000m final (20:05) will see a fascinating clash between Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba and Kenyan Vivian Cheruiyot. Steve Lewis goes in the pole vault (19:00) and Sophie Hitchon in the hammer final (19:35), the relays continue with the finals of the women's 4x100m (20:40) and the men's 4x400m (21:20), and the Jamaicans are expected to star in the first round of the men's 4x100m (19:45)

The 800m final last night was fantastic - probably the greatest 800m race in the history of the Olympics. I felt it was a pity that it was overshadowed by the 200m. Usain Bolt is an amazing talent but am I the only one who finds him irritating? The press-ups at the finishing line were totally unnecessary IMO and Blake tried to congratulate him three times before he took any notice of him. Shades of Federer methinks - incredibly talented but incredibly arrogant!
I think it was just the showman taking over. A lot of sprinters tend to have an overabundance of self-confidence, but I think Usain falls on the fun, entertaining side rather than the arrogant side.

The women's 4x100m was superb though - no British involvement as we dropped too low in the world rankings to compete - but a new World Record of 40.82 for the USA! The previous record was the last remaining one held by East Germany, and it was set in 1980.
Steve Lewis has one more attempt to (probably) get into the medals in the pole vault. 5.85m would be a PB and a British record, so he would do well to go over.

Very weird 1500m race for the women. It seemed to consist of a couple of laps of jogging round the park followed by a somewhat scrappy 800m race. Turkish 1-2 for the first time ever, with the Bahraini athlete taking bronze. Lisa Dobriskey was in 10th place, the pace really not suiting her at all, and Laura Weightman was 11th. Not a great spectacle.
Lisa Dobby-riskey?

No?
Just me then...:getcoat:
It was agonisingly close in the 4x400m relay. Martyn Rooney almost overtook the Trinidadian athlete to win bronze, but the line came too quickly for him. Good run, though.
Pity - he said if the Russian athlete hadn't been so bulky he might have got round him quicker in the finishing straight and made it to the line in third. Such narrow margins!

Oooh! Dave has just reminded me about Andrew Osagie who got a PB, and I remembered Lawrence Clarke in the 110m hurdles - finished 4th completely out of the blue!
Hmmm...maybe a little harsh :) I think there have been a few PBs and unexpected wins. Of course I can't recall many now I'm on the spot ;)
Greg Rutherford did better than expected for one. Sophie Hitchon got a new British Record in the hammer. Steve Lewis finished fifth but I think equalled or got close to his best. I'm sure there have been a few others too....Greg has been leading the long jump rankings all year and did it went it counted no doubting that, while your thinking of bps have a little thought to how many th athlete where in track finals other than over 5000 & 10000

He had his sons with him and he highfived the smallest one then picked him up to hug him. He said: "Come on Mo" about five times then "HE WON" then "unbelievable".
Becks & sons are now all the way over the other side of the Olympic Park watching the diving - he can still move pretty fast when he wants to then :)

Aaargh! What happened to Canada - didn't notice a problem - did they run out of their lane, or swap in the wrong zone...?

Oh well I didn't expect them to do well but it's still sad - esp. for the athletes. However, I'm glad Team Jamaica beat Team USA.

Mo has been a huge star in the games, absolutely superb tonight as it's so tough to do the double. So thrilling seeing him clinch it.

Just watching replays of the 4x100m - I'd really love to know what GB could have done if we'd been in the race - still can hardly believe we messed up the baton AGAIN
