Well that ended up being a close match - worthy of a slam final . After Djokovic won the third set thought the match was over quite honestly - but credit to Rafa he kept fighting and took it to a 5th set. I think it has been a really great AO - lots of 5 set matches ; the Andy v Llodra match which is one of the most entertaining I have ever seen ; a few shocks along the way just to keep the players and us on our toes ; one good semi final and one great semi final - and a five set final . (pity about the ladies final tho - it was a damp squib of a match)
If the AO is anything to go by we are in for a fantastic year of tennis - hope Andy stays healthy and keeps improving with his new coach - and lets just see what happens .
p.s. Ivan in the players box , covering the camera with a towel and hat and giggling had me in stitches

Despite Novak's wins over Rafa on clay last year, I still think that Rafa is a better claycourter than him. Novak's return of serve won't be able to hurt Rafa as much on clay as it does on hard. I think Rafa will have to get wins over Novak in the clay masters to build up confidence before any potential meeting at RG though.

JAMES4578
30-01-2012, 10:30
Maybe Andy'll beat both Rafa and Nole at the French! Well, despite his improvement last year and the fact that Andy can be an even better claycourter really can't see it happening for him here! Agree that Rafa will still be the favourite at Rolland Garros. of course Nole did beat Nadal on clay last year but it may a different matter over best of 5 were they to meet

Alis
30-01-2012, 12:50
What's the betting that Andy is on Rafa's side of the draw again for RG? I really hope he draws Novak so that he gets a shot at Rafa in the final - there would be so much pressure on Rafa that I would fancy Andy's chances.

I hadn't realised that up until the final, when Rafa has won the first set of a slam match, his win-loss record was 133-1!

Here's a bit from si.com's final thoughts of the Oz Open: (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/bruce_jenkins/01/31/australian-open-thoughts/index.html)

• Seldom has so much been gained in defeat. Nadal may have lost his last seven matches to Novak Djokovic, but I don't agree with the conventional wisdom that he "lacks the weapons" to unseat the world No. 1. Not when Nadal takes a 4-2 lead in the fifth set of a match setting the highest standards of physical and mental prowess.

Nadal has taken tremendous strides in this regard. Over that hellish 0-6 stretch last year, we saw him casting looks of hopelessness toward his box, bending over in exhaustion after marathon points, and being remarkably candid in addressing Djokovic's unsettling dominance.

There was none of that on Sunday night. Nadal's performance radiated sheer belief, particularly in the latter stages, and he thrilled the crowd with his exuberance and resilience. How often does a player sink to his knees in triumph with a set still to play? I can't recall an instance, but that was Nadal after the fourth set, knowing he had crossed a very significant barrier in this matchup.

The truth is, Nadal did have enough to win this match. He did have the answers. He absorbed every blow from Djokovic, summoned that legendary resolve, and kept fighting. You won't find him this week on the psychiatrist's couch, an image that came so quickly to mind after last year's Wimbledon. More likely, he's replaying some key points that were on his racket, notably that "sitter" backhand passing shot -- too fine, just wide -- that would have given him a 40-15 lead at 4-2 in the fifth. It was the execution of his own shots that failed him, not some of sort of impenetrable barrier, and I'll throw out a prediction right now: If they meet at the French Open, Nadal will break all the way through.

Not sure where to put this so I've put it here (http://sportsillustrated.ca/multimedia/photo_gallery/0605/gallery.federernadal/content.1.html) - it's about the Rafa/Roger rivalry, with a pic and short blurb from each of their 27 matches to date.

Linda
01-02-2012, 23:24
Well! I wouldn't normally copy a VB translation over here, but this is just so amazing, considering that it comes from a Swiss newspaper!

In defeat, Nadal is bigger than Federer

Novak Djokovic may be the best tennis player at present, and Roger Federer the best in the history of the sport. But the most exemplary sportsman in the world is named Rafael Nadal.

In 2005, when 19-year-old Rafael Nadal won his first grand slam title in Paris and began, clad in sleeveless muscle shirts and too tight Bermuda shorts, to disturb the circles of tennis gentleman Roger Federer, his popularity among Swiss tennis fans was similar to that of the potato bug among farmers.

But with his behavior after his lost Australian Open final against Novak Djokovic this past Sunday, Nadal is likely to have cemented his place in the hearts even of former enemies. The way the 25-year-old conducts himself in the hour of defeat, but also when he wins, makes him a role model for every athlete - far beyond the sport of tennis. When Nadal triumphed at the major in Melbourne in 2009, he didn't celebrate ecstatically but instead took gentle care of Roger Federer, his final opponent, who was crying from disappointment. He handled the defeat by Novak Djokovic this year, after being up a break in the fifth set, with amazing maturity. He didn't allow his disappointment to blemish the joy of victory for his opponent. Maybe because he himself would have liked to celebrate his Australian Open victory three years ago properly rather than console Federer - although if he would never admit to that openly.

Nadal is a player, who has forever established respect among tennis professionals. His aggression and ferocity are confined to the court. As soon as the racket is packed away, the competitive but always fair tennis warrior turns into a sensitive and polite young man. Objective criticism, like his critique of Federer's behavior in the fight for a shortened schedule or that of Djokovic complaining about breathing problems before the final, do not change that impression. To nurture a tennis rivalry with Nadal, similar to one with Ivan Lendle or John McEnroe, is unthinkable.

By the way, Nadal is also fair when it comes to paying taxes. Unlike Djokovic, who does a lot of good in Serbia but has long lived in Monaco, Nadal has always been loyal to his home Mallorca. Even though this loyalty costs him a million euro amount well into the double digits. ( )

In addition, the name Rafael Nadal stands for exemplary fighting spirit. For the Spaniard, giving up on a match is not an option. He controls negative emotions better than his toughest opponents Djokovic, Federer and Murray. However, these three have caught up with him. Especially Djokovic, who was known for letting a match go easily or forfeit with questionable injuries, has greatly improved in that regard - despite Mats Wilander's critique of his body language.

Translated from www.tagesanzeiger.ch/sport/tennis/In-der-Niederlage-ist-Nadal-groesser-als-Federer/story/25718120 by cincimini of VB.

One of the first patients diagnosed with VS was Connie Cerrone, a 43-year-old mother of three from Punxatawny, Pa. She was examined by the CDI mobile unit personnel shortly after she used her husband Harvey's credit card to order 1,000 pairs of Armani Emporium men's briefs in size 32 shortly after the company began to air commercials featuring Nadal as the model.

"I got suspicious when I saw the make and size of the drawers," said Harvey Cerrone, who owns his own pest-control business. "I'm a Fruit-of-the-Loom guy, and I wear only 2XL striped boxers. When that first shipment of those itty-bitty things arrived at the house, I thought they were my Valentine's Day present. Then I went, 'Whoa! Something ain't right here!' To tell you the truth, I thought Connie was having an affair with a pool boy or something like that. But that was too obvious. Then, when UPS kept bringing in more and more boxes and the credit-card company called, I knew something else was going on."

Linda

This was the start of Neil Harman's article in the Times yesterday:

Rafael Nadal has been at home for four days, watching Wimbledon unfold and taking care of the knees that were causing him such pain that he cannot believe they carried him to the French Open title three weeks ago. He does not know how he managed five matches on grass, three before SW19 and two on Centre Court......

And this is what Rafa said today:

Doctors have been looking at my knee and tell me that I suffer from tendinitis in the patellar tendon and I have to be 15 days of rest, which makes it impossible to play with Novak Djokovic as we planned and announced. On Monday I was with the medical treatment and recovery began with the aim also being eligible for the Olympics in London and re- represent Spain. ... Now combine my recovery with a mini-vacation and will return to training in 15 days.

With hindsight, and knowing that Rafa wanted to be fit for the Olympics and for the charity event for his foundation, it probably would have been better not to play the grass season at all.

I'm so worried about Rafa. It seems there is much wrong with him apart from his knees. It's just been reported that he's also suffering from a wry neck - my daughter had this a few years ago: she woke up with her head stuck at a wrong angle and couldn't move it. Luckily her work paid for her to see a chiropractor - but it took eighteen months of fortnightly visits to sort it out.

He's also been photographed with a swollen face and cold sores - though the swollen face is probably due to the fact that he's just had his wisdom teeth out.

Toni has also been recorded as saying that he can't practise properly due to the medication that he's on. What medication? Last year he had that terrible virus in Doha, where he was sweating uncontrollably, and which returned several times, as in Canada. There was a picture this week of him practising (and he's only supposed to have been practising lightly due to the injuries and the medication) where he was absolutely soaked in sweat again. So I wonder if this virus has returned again?

I'm really worried now and wondering if he will ever come back :sofa:

RoastLamb
15-08-2012, 22:44
There's no point in speculation and worrying, Linda. I saw a lovely photo of him with three of his cousins on the fishing boat yesterday and he looked fine.

Even if he did retire he'd have a great career to look back on: 11 slams, gold medal, career slam, gazillion Masters, Davis Cup etc. The only bad thing would be we'd miss him like mad.

Helen40
15-08-2012, 23:26
I've got mixed feelings about this.
I really like Rafa as a player and a person, however I do think Andy's chances are better with one of the big three out of the picture, so potentially he only has to play one of the others, both of whom he's beaten en route to the gold.
I hope Rafa's OK, he's just a kid really (showing my age again) to have so many illnesses. :-(

I'm concerned as it must be serious for Rafa to miss the Olympics and USO. Hopefully this time off will help him recover to full fitness and he will be back to his best in 2013. Uncle Toni gave an interview on Spanish radio last night. He said that Rafa has to have three months off in order to make a complete recovery. He should have taken three months off back in 2009 but didn't take long enough, so the knees didn't heal well enough. After three months he should be fine. He also said that Rafa is looking forward to playing in the next Olympics! So I'm feeling much happier now :)

Sallydaisy
16-08-2012, 16:47
I think it's a wise decision tbh and I hope Rafa is fully recovered and fit before he comes back.
I've wondered a few times how he's managed to play when he's had a lot of pain on and off and complete rest is the best thing to do to make sure all the inflammation is clear.

Very tough for him though to have to sit on the sidelines; sports people often have a short time to make their mark. Thankfully the guys seems to keep playing on the tour through to their early 30's so there's chance.

Manacor, Spain, September 3rd, 2012.- Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal will not play in the next 2 months and will stop to rest and recover his knee. Among other things he won´t be able to be at the disposal of the Spanish Davis Cup captain for the semifinals tie against the USA.

Rafa has partial tear of the patella tendon at the distal pole of the patella plus an inflammation of the Hoffa’s fat pad of his left knee.

Since the diagnosis of that tear, Rafa has been receiving medical treatment consisting on specific medication, physical therapy and a progressive program of rehabilitation and muscular potentiation.

For Rafa Nadal “I have missed the Olympics and the US Open in the last few weeks, tow of the most important tournaments of the year and that I really wanted to play. I really want to be back competing and enjoying the tennis tour, but I have many years in front of me and my knee needs some rest. I will be back when I have no pain and able to compete with guarantee.

I feel better after the meeting with my doctors and happy knowing that the evolution of the past weeks has been positive and surgery has been avoided. I will continue to work with the plan my doctors have ”established to be able to compete as soon as possible in the right conditions.

I would also like to thanks all for the support I ma receiving these days.

Wonder if all being well Rafa will take part in the World Tour finals, though of course he won't be match fit.

Take it all being well Rafa will take part in the World Tour finals, though of course he won't be match fit.

I can only assume that the '2 month' declaration means that he hasn't ruled out appearing at WT finals.

It would seem unlikely that he will appear at that - and arguably unwise too - unless his recovery does go quicker than expected.

A 'stop for 2 months' might mean that a return in January would be more sensible.

I can't see him playing at all the rest of the year either. There'd be no point him playing the WTF because he'd be rubbish. So if he does come back in January I wonder which warm-up tournaments he'll do. He usually does Abu Dhabi and Doha.

Tennis Space (http://www.thetennisspace.com/on-court/diary-isner-was-late-but-had-nothing-on-hewitt/) - mentions Rafa

It began when www.ubitennis.com reported a conversation with Perez-Barbadillo saying that Nadal was unlikely to make the Davis Cup semi-final against the United States. The piece was picked up by the Spanish press as being definite but Perez-Barbadillo clarified that it had only been his thoughts.

So rafa now says he plans to stop at Rio in 2016. I suppose that makes sense, i only hope he can physically make it through the next four years. We need to make the most of every match coz you never know at this point if it'll be his last.

Going to a awards ceremony.

The funny thing is, he was already scheduled to go to one awards ceremony (where he was presented with an award) when he was also invited to another awards ceremony (where he was also to be presented with an award). So at the second one they had a recording of him being presented with the award. (I've just been watching both programmes on live streams - they were both on at the same time!)

the rumour machine has swung into action - reports coming in from a variety of sources that rafa is not injured but is serving a 'silent' ban for doping. Where do they get these things from?

Yeah, but we can't remember where we copied them from.

As for this idea of a ban it's ridiculous to

a) think that it could be kept under wraps if it were true
b) think that the ATP wouldn't want to make an example of him to put others off from misbehaving.

Think some people just haven't got enough to think about

Think some people just haven't got enough to think about :rolleyes:not for a second do i think its true, however cant agree with yur second point, time and time again the ATP have shown they are far more interested in protecting thier own reputation than doling out appropriate punishments never mind pursuing the guilty

Actually - just in case you thought my final comment was aimed at you, it wasn't - it was aimed at the rumour mongers. You may be right about my second point but surely they'd be mad to cover up players' misdemeanours in light of my first point? Given that the press will make things up if they can't find anything worthwhile printing, they'd surely sniff out any real transgressors like bloodhounds?

anyhow all very hypothetical as we all know its not true

Can I just preface my post with the fact I love Rafa and watching him play is a joy, BUT on F/B today he posted a picture of himself having physiotherapy but he was lying on an Australian Open towel which at the time I thought was odd , I thought this must be an old picture.

RL - not getting at Rafa - on the contrary - I'm saying that in relation to any player I'd be surprised if the ATP could manage to keep a transgression under wraps and that's data protection or no data protection. Anyone heard of Murdoch??

S'pose we probably better not go too much further with this convo or I may have to ban myself

On a positive note I was at my niece's house the last couple of days and I had nothing to do so I watched the 2008 Wimbly final from first to last point. Took hours. Anyway, Rafa looked soooo good. Miss his sleeveless shirts. But what was interesting was the commentary: hardly any. It's the BBC video I have and it's so different to the American commentary.
