Tournament Info

The WTA makes its lone stop in Africa for the Grand Prix de SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem. The red clay court event has been staged in three different cities in Morocco, starting off in Casablanca in 2001, moving to Rabat in 2005 and then to its current home of Fès in 2007.

Fès, an increasingly popular tourist destination, is Morocco's second largest city. The name of the event refers to Princess Lalla Meryem, the sister of Mohammed VI, King of Morocco.

Among the tournament's past participants are Marion Bartoli, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Li Na, Dinara Safina and Patty Schnyder. It has produced a different champion each year since its inception.

Kerber just destroyed Wozniacki 6-1, 6-2, Petra will need to be on form to hold her off. Stosur/Sharapova could be interesting, though Maria leads 9-1 even if she lost their last encounter.

So sorry to see Petko injured again last night in her comeback tournament - just as the match was beginning to get really interesting too. Yet another turned ankle on the b****y red stuff! I've never warmed to Azarenka but I have to say her genuine concern for her opponent last night did her a lot of credit.

Kvitova played extremely well last night - seemed as though she was fed up with being on so late and determined not to stay around long but Maria is such a fighter that you can't write her off. I really hope that Aga finds a way to beat Vika today but I can't really see it happening.

JAMES4578

Fantastic tennis from the women today - all 4 matches have been so competitive.

Ceretainly was a quality match with Maria and Sam, though disappointed for Sam that she couldn't close it out when you had the chance, things just didn't go her way then and once sharapova edged the 2nd it was more likely to be her day. Petra certainly wanted to send a messsage and hope she can get to the final.

Vika beats Aga comfortably again. Unfortunately for Aga, her game just seems to be a perfect match for Vika, in a bad way that is. lol

Maria was pretty much on form throughout but Petra will be kicking herself for missing the sp's in the 2nd, just wasn't consistent enough. Sharapova hasn't had a great record in finals lately, will need to be in top form to stop Vika and this is not a great match up for her.

Doubles - Final

Go Alizé!! That's her 2nd tour title. She won her first 4 years ago, so she's had quite a wait for a second title.

With Oudin doing well at Birmingham too, and Errani in Paris of course, it's good to see some of the smaller players stringing a few wins together.. And Jill Craybas is one of the tiniest on the tour too..

The seedings for Wimbledon adhere strictly to the world rankings, which means there is no seeding for either Venus or Kim,surely the committee could have made some modifications in the interests of the draw. If things go to plan Serena will play one of the top 4 in the quarters. Would have thought Serena could have moved up slightly, though suppose might have been problematic to move the defending chmpion Petra Kvitova outside of the top 4. Friday may well be interesting!

Actually, Wimbledon is the one Grand Slam that doesn't "adhere strictly to the world rankings". They apply a formula based on grasscourt performance to the mens rankings but their approach to the womens side less defined. The following is from si.com:-

This year, the women’s seedings follow the WTA rankings, meaning the AELTC felt no need to shuffle the seeds. Interestingly, the committee applies a much more arbitrary set of criteria to the women than the men. While the men’s seedings are based on a very specific formula (ATP points + grass court points from the last 12 months + 75 percent of grass court points from the 12 months before that) the women’s criteria is less than clear. The committee simply uses the WTA rankings “except where in the opinion of the committee, a change is necessary to produce a balanced draw.” That’s an odd and seemingly unnecessarily disparate set of criteria.

If the committee did apply the same mathematical formula to the women, surely Serena Williams would get a bump (benefiting from her champion’s points from 2010), as would Marion Bartoli (2011 Wimbledon quarterfinalist and 2011 Eastbourne champion), and Sabine Lisicki (2011 Wimbledon semifinalist and Eastbourne champion). And if the committee were to apply the formula to players outside of the top 32, Tsvetana Pironkova, who made the semis in 2010 and quarters last year, would have surely earned herself a seeding, and rightfully so.

So there has been some shuffling in the mens order but not the ladies.
It's a bit strange to be honest and could produce some interesting matchups!!!
;)

JAMES4578
21-06-2012, 12:27
Yes I meant that on this particular ocassion they hadn't made any changes to the ladies, though they are entiltled to do so. I think the mathematical formulae has worked well in the men's game. It may be that Wimbledon think there aren't as many grass court specialists in the women's game but I think a case can be made for a different approach.

Could the Indian tennis/Olympic authorities have made any more of a mess of this?
This open letter from Sania Mirza is quite amazing.
http://sports.ndtv.com/tennis/news/item/192513-sania-mirzas-letter-full-text

In fact not just the Indians - there have been many tennis players who's combination of federations and Olympic committees are denying them the chance to compete in arguably the greatest show on earth!

Great win for Li Na in Cincy! 1-6 6-3 6-1. Her first title since her RG win 15 months ago! :yahoo:

Yip - the work that she has been doing with her new coach seems to be paying off for her. Dark horse for US Open, perhaps?

Bit disappointed for Angie Kerber though. She was 6-1, 3-1 up - then Li proceeded to win 11 of the next 12 games.

I was hoping Li Na would win seeing as she lost last week in Montreal. Not warmed to Kerber as yet but she has great potential. The best of the German players perhaps?

The German players seem to be taking it in turns to become 'the one most likely to..'. First it was Lisicki, then Petkovic, then Goerges, then Lisicki again. Barthel seemed to improve - and now its Kerber.

Kerber does seem to be the one with the most potential. Have seen her play live a few times now, and she's got a good all-round game and good mental strength - a very competitive spirit. She actually has a nicer game to watch, compared with her compatriots too.

Na Li is definitely having a good Hard Court season, isn't she! Wouldn't be surprised to see her reach the latter stages of the US Open - but then again, to say that she can be prone to off-days (and possibly get knocked out early) is an understatement..

JAMES4578
20-08-2012, 06:21
Certainly was a great comeback from Li Na, though disappointed Kerber fell away so much in the decider. A marathon game on Kerber's serve at 3-4 in the 2nd proved to be decisive. Angelique certainly has potential though I think she needs to improve her 2nd serve. Commentators mentioned that by the time she finished her semi with Petra all the restauants on site were closed and she made do with a sandwich! Interesting that Li Na was working with Carlos Rodriguez who was Justin Henin's coach for so long of course.

I was able to catch that one too - it was a good match, wasn't it?

Unbelievably, Angie Kerber hit 28 winners - and still lost 6-1, 6-1!

The fact that she hit 32 UE's probably didn't help.

Aga Radwanska, however, hit 20 winners and 4 UE's. She played so well today. Lots of fabulous points, whether from the baseline or at the net - wonderful netplay from both players, plenty of drop shots (a rarity in tennis these days!), including a drop shot by Aga off a return of serve.

Well done Laura but it's a great shame Heather lost.

So, the youngest in the draw (http://www.chinaopen.com.cn/en/draws.html)(Laura, 18) now faced the eldest (Kimiko Date-Krumm, turned 42 yesterday) who is here on a Wildcard. Should be interesting; Kimi hasn't played at all well this year but can still produce the goods.

Elena Vesnina and Ekat Makarova won the doubles title in Beijing:

http://www.wtatennis.com/doublesnews/20121006/makarova-vesninas-beijing-breakthrough_2256567_2941505

Am a fan of Vesnina, and she's lost so many finals in doubles in the past, including Beijing - nice to see her bag this one.

What was a bit annoying about the doubles here was they the 'no-advantage' rule was used.

I have no idea how widely this is used - does anyone know??

I really don't like it. If I had to choose between ditching this or the Champs Tie-break I would ditch the no-ad rule.

Alis
07-10-2012, 10:31
I don't like it either, super8, but it seems to be widely used in tournaments other than the Majors. Seemingly, the no-ad rule and the CTB were brought in to speed up the doubles and make the matches more attractive. Actually, I think it has had the opposite effect - it devalues the doubles in my eyes.

super8
07-10-2012, 10:58
I agree. The matches lose any chance of tension brought about by numerous deuces, etc. - which is part of the attraction - for me, at least!

The 'Receiver's Choice' aspect is a little bizarre too.

I first noticed it in the men's doubles in the London Year End tournament, when they started the matches at about 2pm - I think it's now 1pm.

Why not start the matches at 11am, and make them proper 3-setters there? Cricket matches at Lords/ the Oval start at 11am, so I don't see why they can't manage the same in the tennis.

But for tournaments in general - why not have proper best-of-three sets in double in the semi finals and finals at the very least? If time is an issue, then surely the matches have thinned out considerably by then.

Over in Beijing, Vika has beaten Maria for the 4th time in 5 matches this year to take the title.

If you saw the Aussie Open final between them, then not much need to watch this one - it was a very similar match, right down to the scoreline - 6-3 6-1 (was 6-3 6-0 in Melbourne).

In terms of gameplan, Maria's 'Plan A' just doesn't work well against Vika - it's a bad matchup for her. Vika neutralises Maria's aggressive groundstrokes too easily.

JAMES4578
07-10-2012, 13:33
Disappointing it wasn't more of a contest, only their Us Open clash was really competitive as the one Maria won was also pretty straightforward. Vika having a good run though, having been so close at Flushing Meadows.

david1610
07-10-2012, 15:24
I understand the criticisms but my understanding is the changes were brought in to standardise how long a doubles match would last, whether it started at 11:00 or 12:00 or 14:00. This would then help scheduling in terms of knowing when a following singles match would begin.
To use an entertainment metaphor, the doubles are the "warm up" act for the singles, but you have to know when your main act is coming on stage. And being a warm up act is often a frustrating experience for bands and fans of those bands! But better to have a warm up act than none at all!

At the time it was stated that doubles matches were in danger of gradually losing interest - the tennis associations also wanted more singles players to get involved in doubles, even if only occasionally (again, that is a mixed blessing, and a negative one for the true doubles players being squeezed out of the top tournaments due to lack of space).
I am not saying I disagree with the criticisms but the changes were introduced because of a greater concern. Does that still hold?

Alis
07-10-2012, 15:38
Perhaps they ought to hold a review to assess whether the changes have been successful and whether they are popular with the viewing public. I enjoy watching doubles because the players have to have such fast reactions and they tend to be less intense than the singles. I'm sure that if they televised the doubles more often the public would become more enthusiastic.

The US Open and the Australian Open have afternoon and evening sessions, into which they slot doubles matches which don't have ad-points/ Champs tie breaks - and manage that without compromising the start times of the singles matches.

Weather also not an issue - so there is really little that needs to be controlled on that front.

Also - Men's doubles is not exactly known for its long-drawn out points they are short as it is! I'd say that they remain very serve-volley-orientated.

I am also dubious about shortening of doubles matches to attract the top singles players. Given the sheer physicality required of players these days, I doubt if any shortening of doubles matches will attract them.

The solution would surely be to have the singles match straight after the doubles - but perhaps 'not before' a certain time if the doubles is especially short - just as at the US/ Aus Open.

Two tight and entertaining matches yesterday as both Arazaneka and Sharapova came back from a set down to beat Kerber and Radwanska respectively in matches lasting over 3 hours. Serena and Maria have now qualified for the semis. Meanwhile Kvitova has pulled out with a virus having Played just the one match when she was a bit out of sorts in losing to Agie. Stosur will take her place and opens up against Sara Erani today.

Yip - 2 corkers yesterday, after the errorfest that was Serena v Li.

Vika saved 2 match points against Angie yesterday too.

Was a late night. I think that the Aga v Sharpie match finished at about 2:15am!! Add to that the post-match pressers, massages etc and that is one very late night.

Kvitova had a viral infection that she initially thought was just nerves. She did say that she felt the pressure of trying to defend this particular title.

btw if Vika beats Serena in today's RR match then Vika secures y/e number 1. Sharpie has to win the tourney and hope Vika loses a few for her to get it. Probably a long shot.

So, the final will be between Shriekapova and Serena. No guesses who's going to win that one if we base it on previous recent results. Pfft! Shazza took care of Azarenka pretty easily and Serena blasted through Aggie.

In the doubles - which I found WAY MORE interesting than the singles tbh - the final will be between Team Russia (Petrova and Kirilenko) and Team Czech (don't ask me to spell their names coz I can't). Team Italy went out (surprisingly) in 3 in the semi and Team USA went out in straights.

JAMES4578
27-10-2012, 21:09
Certainly think an in form Vika would've been a better oponent for Serena but she wasn't really that today and did seem a bit injured. Maria though did play pretty well but she hasn't even tested Serena for some time and her only wins were in 2004. It was always going to be tough for Aggie and she was hampered by having two very tough matches. The doubles final could well be a good contest between Petrova/Kirkilenko and Hlavackova/Hradecka (I did copy that one!)

RoastLamb
28-10-2012, 17:14
So Serena wins in straights (yawn) and Team Russia win in straights too. Why does Serena beat Shazza so easily?

JAMES4578
28-10-2012, 18:39
At least it was a bit more competitive than some of their recent matches but serena was always in control and so dominant on serve, only being taken to Deuce once and constantly put Maria under pressure on her own delivery. I think Serena just reads Sharapova's game well and it's not a good match up for the Russian. She could really do with a bit more variety and Williams makes her look a bit slow. Glad Nadia/Maria took the doubles and they did impress but Andrea/Lucie really got off to a slow start and couldn't really threaten until it was too late which was a pity.

super8

So Serena wins in straights (yawn) and Team Russia win in straights too. Why does Serena beat Shazza so easily?

One of my favourite folk to follow on Twitter is Chris P (@scoobschris). Here are 3 of his tweets about the match today that probably summarise why Serena does so well against Sharpie:

- Maria is such a good player, and yet Serena's game just makes her look slow, ungainly and limited. It's brutally impressive.
- Yank her this way, yank her that way, yank her this way, yank her that way. Boom.
- When Maria tries to hit really hard, she has less control. Serena can hit really hard, and maintain perfect control of her shots.

Serena figured out her tactics for Sharapova a while ago, and Sharapova has simply been unable to counter that. As James mentioned, she just isn't mobile enough and also doesn't have the power to hit through Serena. But then again only an on-form Kvitova does - and in the last 2-3 years, only Kim could really trouble Serena consistently.

Serena has lost 4 matches out of maybe 59 played in the season . 3 of those were pre-Wimbledon - including that freak result against Razzano. The others who beat her were Makarova (Aus Open), Kerber and Wozniacki.

WTA HOBART
Not sure if this news will have any impact but it seems that Tasmania is beset by sweltering heat conditions and there are wildfires raging which have cut off a peninsula near Hobart (where the tennis is being played).

Report here from the BBC.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-20918692

100 homes have been destroyed in the town of Dunalley. The main road to the Tasman Peninsula, south-east of Hobart, has been cut off, stranding thousands of people, many of them tourists in the historic site of Port Arthur.

I'm watching Laura play her R1 match in Hobart courtesy a livestream on the tourney website!
http://www.youtube.com/HobartInternational

Our lass was broken in the first game of the match and Sloane Stephens went on to win set 1 by 6'4.
Laura seemed sluggish and was overhitting a lot of her passing shots but improved towards the end of the set and had breakback points in game 8.

It's 1-1 in the 2nd set with Laura holding to love in the opening service game.

I guess we have to bear in mind she has a new coach so if there are tweaks to her game they might be disrupting her rhythm until she's played a few matches.

These are 2 of the best youngsters in the world playing each other.

Laura fell behind in the 2nd set but levelled back at 3-3 and then held her serve. She couldn't break Stephens and it's into a tie-breaker. Unfortunately, Laura's error count crept back up and Stephens took a 4-1 lead before eventually winning the match 6'4, 7'6(4).
Just too many unforced errors from Robbo.

Congratulations to Elena Vesnina, who beat defending champ Mona Barthel to win the title in Hobart.

Would you believe it - this is Elena's first WTA singles tour title!!

This was her 7th WTA singles final, so lucky number 7 for her, I guess. I think that she lost her last final (in Istanbul) on her birthday too.

She is actually one of my favourite players on the tour - it was a real surprise to hear that she had never won a tour singles title - until now.

Some various snippets of WTA news.

Alisa Kleybanova hopes to return to the tour before the summer after a 2 year battle against cancer (Hodgkins Lymphoma)
Article here (http://straightsets.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/02/18/kleybanova-plots-return-after-two-year-cancer-fight/).

In 2010, Kleybanova won titles at Kuala Lumpur in February and Seoul in September and achieved her career-best No. 20 ranking in February 2011. As the season wore on, however, fatigue set in and she complained of continual flu-like symptoms.he decided to stop playing to seek out an explanation. That’s when doctors diagnosed her with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

She revealed the diagnosis on the WTA’s Web site on July 15, 2011, her 22nd birthday.
Ten months later after receiving treatment in Perugia, Italy, Kleybanova secured a wild card into the Sony Ericcson Open in Miami in March 2012. Although she won her first test against Sweden’s Johanna Larsson, she fell in the next round to Maria Kirilenko of Russia in straight sets.Despite the victory in her first comeback match, she said she realized that her body wasn’t ready for a full competition load.

This is all quite sad ... although it's good to see Marino return.

TENNIS.com ‏@tennis (https://twitter.com/tennis) One of the reasons Rebecca Marino took seven months off from tennis?
Internet criticism: http://ow.ly/hPs7a (http://t.co/coecevaH)

Courtney Nguyen ‏@FortyDeuceTwits (https://twitter.com/FortyDeuceTwits) On the heels of Rebecca Marino's return to Twitter from cyberbullying,
Laura Robson's deleted her account. Suspect it was for same reason.
Bettors and perverts will drive even those with the thickest skin off the internet.
Hope she reactivates but completely understandable.

Ben Rothenberg ‏@BenRothenberg (https://twitter.com/BenRothenberg) On day my story on Marino's internet woes comes out, Laura Robson apparently decides she's had enough with Twitter herself, deactivates... Robson was one of THE most followed players, with over 160,000 followers. But this can be a rude, harsh place to be for a young female athlete.

She lost 6-2 6-4

Laura is 2-2 in the first set.

Anne's and Tara's matches in Mexico should have started a couple of hours ago but haven't. It says 'FRO' alongside them - anyone know what that means?

And Stosur pulled out earlier! The Ladies draw is a bit shot up and so is today's schedule.

Vika has a bit of a record here, though it seems it was certainly unavoidable this time. Pity for stosur too! Sharapova must be the strong favourite now and will replace Azaerenka as the world 2 if she makes the final.

Miami WTA: @HeatherWatson92 (https://twitter.com/HeatherWatson92) plays Ayumi Morita JPN WR 50 (CH 40 in 2011) in R1, a chance to avenge a 5&2 loss here at the same stage in 2011

Miami ctd: The winner plays 31st seed Yanina Wickmayer, with top seed Serena probably looming in R3 for the survivor of that little section

OOP Schedule on Livescores for Miami has Heather playing on the main Grandstand court at 12:00 local today which I think is 4:00 p.m. in the UK. She plays Morita of Japan.

Heard about the alleged offence earlier, not jumping to conclusions on this but Capraiti has had some troubled times. Of course she had trouble with the law early in her career and after she retired there were reports she suffered from depression and a few years ago she was hospitalised after an overdose of prescription drugs.

The tournament is lucky not to have lost a few more players!

Apparently, after their singles match yesterday both Alize Cornet and Lauren Davis were taken off court in wheelchairs suffering from heat exhaustion.

Cornet was so ill that she didn't know whether she'd won or not and had to ask the Umpire. Davis was stung on the butt by a wasp - but didn't blame her loss on the wee beastie.
