Hello everyone....what an absolutely wonderful afternoon for us all. We have been on many a Murraycoaster together but today just makes everything worthwhile. My sky tv cutout before the winning moment. Was I the only one?

I thought someone must have sabotaged it 'cause it was too much of a coincidence. I ran upstairs and turned on my freeview tv to see andy celebrating. I was furious and it ruined my moment of joy.
Oh well.

So pleased for andy. He was absolutely on it.

Maybe you're right but imho I think it'll be very difficult for him to win it esp. when others are so much more comfortable on the surface.Isn't that what they said about Agassi and Nadal on grass? Andy is good enough and he's gonna do it, I don't think anything can stop him now.

Hi folks, apologies for the rather hasty post earlier - I was on my way out to a gig (you guys know I'm a musician, right?), and had left it to the very last minute to get ready because of watching Andy! :)

Today is special for me for so many reasons, it's hard to put it into words. First of all I can't help but think back to everyone who's ever taken delight in gloating at me because Andy has lost - I remember a text message that someone sent me when Andy lost to Roddick at Wimbledon those years ago saying "So much for Murray." It's wrong of me to think of those moments I know, but I can't help myself - it is very hard and dare I say upsetting sometimes to be a Murray fan, when you see someone that you respect and admire so much keep getting ripped to pieces. In the heat of sporting passion when Murray had just won I posted on my Facebook "To every Murray hater there's ever been, I say - UP YOURS!!!", which someone took offence to. In retrospect a bit too strong I agree, but the result just caused a lot of outpouring of emotion for me.

But more than anything else, I just feel this huge sense of pride that someone I have so much respect and admiration for has achieved something SO HUGE!! I know how hard Andy works and trains, and I know what today will have meant to him, his team, his family, the people of Dunblane (hope I've spelt that correctly) who have suffered so much - God, I'm tearing up as I think about it!! :)

Everything that's happened to Andy has been a step up - as much as last year's final loss hurt, I think it was necessary for the public (at least, most of them, lol!) to finally begin to see the Andy that we've always known as there. He's a very special person, and I truly believe that finally people are beginning to realise that just because he's not Mr. Charisma, that doesn't mean he isn't special in his own way. :)

I realise this has been a bit of a rambling post, particularly from someone who doesn't post here very often, but I wanted to share how I feel with all of you. Today is a special day. Whatever happens in the future, all of us will remember this day forever. Thank you, Andy Murray. :)

Take care... :)

Great post Henfan, good to hear from you and glad you were able to see this special moment! Sure nearly everyone on here has been a Murray fan for some time and whilst some may post more than others everyone is welcome, know you have always been a fab supporter!

So proud of him, now it's sinking in abit more. Admittedly Djokers was abit tired from his match with Delpo, and didn't play to his normal high standards (Many more UEs than usual, and shortened points).

BUT qdos to Andy for taking advantage of that and not bottling it like Tim used to do, and playing well on the big points. Very disappointed with 'Today and Wimby' not showing either of their post match interviews, or any shots of them going to the ball. I thought that's why they rescheduled it!

Looking forward to an even better ending to the man behind the racket tomorrow night.

Anyone got the viewing figures for the match today?

What's interesting is I think Andy has del Potro to thank for the Olympic win and this one today - he exhausted both Federer AND Djokovic, it would appear. So, thanks Potty!

what do we reckon the odds are on Graham Norton doing a David Letterman and rushing through with the beeb on getting Andy on this Friday, he's the only chat show running at the moment, Jonathan Ross would be all over it like a rash.

I think that he did.

Nole may have come through long semi finals before - but that semi against DelPo is probably the toughest that I can recall seeing. A brute of a semi final.

To me, there were tell-tale signs of this right in the first 3-4 games of the final, when Nole played some uncharacteristic shots. Drop shots, serve volleys. Not like him a all so early a any match.

But of course it is Andy's day today. He played well, richly deserved his 2nd major title. Truly exciting times for him, his family, his team. . Thrilled for him and everyone who has worked with him to get him here, and who has supported him to get him here.

Andy Murray also explains to BBC Radio 4 about whether he enjoys the moments when he is on court, especially in physically demanding matches like Sunday's final: "It is tough to explain. When a match finishes, if I lost it yesterday I would not have enjoyed it, but I won.

"Yesterday was unbelievably physical - you need to embrace it, I don't know so much about enjoy but you need to embrace that situation. It was really, really tiring on court, one of the most challenging matches of my career.

"I have always really enjoyed training, going to the gym and getting in better shape - all the pressure you have to deal with that makes playing Wimbledon hard and stressful.

"It has not been easy the last few years. I have enjoyed trying to improve, but dealing with the pressures has been tough for me at times."

Andy Murray, speaking to BBC Radio 4, explains what he felt was the turning point in his career that led to his Wimbledon triumph on Sunday: "The two or three weeks after Wimbledon last year were really important. Wimbledon last year was the hardest loss of my career. I was emotional afterwards and I responded really well.

"I don't know why that was. I don't know if it was a maturing process or just a release maybe, but I responded really well and as soon as I was back on the practice court I felt really good about my game and hadn't felt like that just prior to that."

I am prone to weird dreams.....this morning I wondered if this was just another BUT NO! Andy Murray really is the 2013 Wimbledon champ. Still can hardly believe it. What a star!

I first saw him play against Johnny Mac at Wembley aged 17 (he was standing in for an injured Tim) and have followed him ever since. So, so pleased for him, his friends and family and someone else must be very proud of his charge too - how fitting that Ivan was the first person Andy went to after the win of his life.

What a day!

I don't think we can take anything away from Andy. Nole had a much harder semi and final in the Oz open 2 years ago and won both. If he was below par because of his other matches yesterday then that just says something about Andy's superior physical and mental condition. He beat him fair and square IMHO and particularly showed his mental strength and metal in that last game.

I don't believe Nole was overly tired he was making many unforced errors in potty match mainly the backhand. Nole is a very fit athlete and I think the reason for shortening points at the net was cos of the heat to shorten the rallies and to make Andy make errors. Which he didnt after a while. Andy was the better player in the end, took his chances and won. End of.

Someone mentioned an appearance on graham Norton sadly the series ended for the summer last week, would love to have seen him on that!

I don't think the engagement will happen anytime soon perhaps not til he retires. I don't think he should get married until he retires as when other players have their form has dropped and rankings slipped Tim Henman, Pete Sampras......

I think the audience being behind Andy wouldn't have helped Nole either.

The previous matches do take their toll. That is just a biological fact. That is why we look at the draw and it is not just avoiding people who might beat you but also those who might drain you.

A key element this year was revealed by Andy today who said that all the "stuff" leading up to the final took away less mental energy this year.

I also think that he and Ivan have worked on mental toughness and this year the fact he simply "reset" every time he did not manage to do something, and tried again, and again, until he got what he needed - a point, a break, a set.... a match... a championship! was the big difference. And to new levels. That last game may well become standard material for coaching sessions on mental fortitude for years to come!

Winning the US Open won't gain Andy any more points though since he is obviously the defending Champion, though could close the gap if Djokovic doesn't reach the final.

I don't think that's fair about Nole. I think he's much nicer and more generous than Smugfed. We criticized Rafa for not making any excuses when he lost to Darcis, when it was clear he was struggling with his movement - all credit to Darcis of course for not bottling it and taking his opportunities.

I think that Delpo was a much tougher opponent than JJ, and if the draw had fallen the other way we might not be celebrating right now. Novak hasn't made a big deal of being tired, just said it might have been a factor, and personally I think it was. It doesn't take anything away from the fact that Andy's won, he's had good draws and bad draws in the past and that's just the way it fall in tennis.

He beat him fair and square IMHO and particularly showed his mental strength and metal in that last game.Spot on, the caption before the final started showed that Andy had slightly more game time over the fortnight, I think there was a feeling in the air that Andy would win, Andy knew it and Nole knew it, he seemed almost happy for Andy to win this one. I believe this is a huge thing for Andy moving forward now, these two are maybe gonna play a couple of slam finals a year against each other for the next few years so for Andy to demolish him in straight sets means the granite mentality of the Serb has been torn apart in a way that just about squeezing through in 5 sets at the U.S.Open wouldn't have done. It's gonna be really interesting to see what happens if they meet in New York again in a couple of months. I wanted Novak knocked out before the final at Wimbledon, but from now on, I want it to be these two in the final every time, coz I reckon Andy can really believe now, and beating the best makes it all the more satisfying.

In terms of Andy getting closer to #1, unfortunately he'll lose 750 points in a month or so because of the Olympics. However, he has much to gain at Cincy and Canada so there's hope there! He also has an opportunity to gain at Paris and the WTF. He could gain 400 more points at Shanghai if he wins that (hopefully he'll take his match points this year if he gets that far!!)

Reef
08-07-2013, 11:26
Andy had some tough matches in his run to the final and yes, Nole didn't have much time to recover from the Delpo encounter, but had he sailed through that and reached the final without dropping a set, would he have been match-tough enough to overcome Andy anyway? Somehow I doubt it. It's all academic anyway now... I do think however that Delpo is on his way back by the looks of things.

For now however, let's just enjoy what we have all longed and waited for, our boy's success on the biggest and best stage. I don't know about anyone else but for some reason I'm absolutely exhausted today - like it was me who played yesterday. In a way of course it was.:sleepy:

Andy's emotions, the documentary, his achievements. If they are still not enough, then it really IS not worth bothering about other people.
But there was a sea change at Wimbledon this year. That is positive.

Oh my goodness. Andy Murray, Wimbledon Champion. We knew you could do it! I am still in a daze - yesterday was just so fabulous. Once he got the better of the Jerzy boy on Friday, I knew he was going to win it this time. I thought when he came out on to court yesterday there was just that look in his eye. So so so pleased for Andy, his team and his family, what an amazing achievement after everything he's been through. Last night I felt like I had personally won Wimbledon and been part of his team because I had so many texts and phone calls from friends and family saying how amazing Andy was and checking whether I was still breathing! Winning Olympic Gold was special, winning the US Open was thrilling, but winning Wimbledon - that is just extraordinary. I did not think I would live long enough to see a British man (far less as Scot) win it. I just love this guy more with every tournament, he is such an amazing athlete and yet so down to earth, with a wicked sense of humour. I do wish I could find a way not to cry at everything he does though!

I was on Centre Court last year for the final against Roger, it would have been unbelievable to be there yesterday. Hope all those with tickets realise how lucky they were, what a special day to be at.

Well done Andy, the whole country is proud of you. Wimbledon Champion. They can never take it away from you, your name is engraved on the trophy and on the board at the AELTC for all time :)

I don't think that anyone can convincingly take any gloss off this victory.

Mentioning factors that may have contributed towards Andy's victory is in no way tantamount to saying that he would not have won otherwise.

As cazza mentioned, home support probably helped Andy a lot. That does not allow folk to say that had the support not been the case he might not have won.

Novak might have not have been at his best, whether due to not being on top of his game or a little fatigued - or both. That is not to say that Andy would not have won anyway. However it cannot be discounted as not being a contributory factor towards his win. It was also up to Novak and his team to ensure that he was in good shape for the final. Not Andy's problem at all.

All of the top players say that in the matches between them, if often boils down to who has most of their 'A' game with them on the day. Unlike against lower-ranked players they don't have the luxury of not playing well and winning.

Andy won because be was the better player in the day. Novak did 't win because be did 't play as well as Andy, for whatever reasons. He a d his team can have no cause for complaint about the end result. The gloss stays firmly on this win.

However it cannot be discounted as not being a contributory factor towards his win. It was also up to Novak and his team to ensure that he was in good shape for the final. Not Andy's problem at all. I bet Novak fans weren't saying that Djokovic only won the Aussie Open final because of Andy's blistered feet, top post mate. In tennis the better you play, the harder it is for your opponent to perform, and from the 1st 3 games Andy was on fire, I reckon this contributed more to Nole's performance than anything else.

As I sat down to watch the match yesterday the fates conspired against me - much to my eternal chagrin - and I saw virtually none of it. Thankfully, I had put it on to record so sometime today I will sit down to watch it with the luxury of knowing the result. It has been great fun to read through all your posts today and I am sooooooooo proud of our boy, proud to be an Andy fan and proud to be part of this 'select' group who have supported him through thick and thin. Thank you all for your positivity during the bad times - everything from now is a bonus but I certainly feel the future looks bring for Andy and his fans!

Mr A, very sweetly, put a bottle of champagne in the freezer after the match - unfortunately he forgot about it and this morning we have some very expensive ice crystals and a lot of shattered glass! What a shame but it could have been worse - Andy could have lost!!!!

And there is also the clay court season for 2014 were he can make up the most points, I believe he's ready to win on all surfaces, if I'm wrong, it's gonna be tough for him to make the No.1 spot, but I don't think I'm wrong, I reckon Andy has it in him to win the French, even to beat Rafa on the red stuff.

As much as I love Andy and support him, I think saying he can beat Rafa on clay for the French Open is a drastic statement at the moment. Grass and Hard courts no question, clay is different for Andy like grass was for Lendl.

I wasn't able to post after Andy's first round match and for some ridiculous reason I got it into my head that it was a sign and if I refrained from posting further, Andy would win Wimbledon. Damn superstitions but it worked. ;)

What an incredible achievement from Andy under the most incredible pressure that I don't believe any other sportsman has had to endure. The attention from the British public on Wimbledon is unprecedented as it comes from all quarters and includes people who have no interest in sport other than these 2 weeks. He really is remarkable and all achieved with such humility. For me, this win is the greatest sporting achievement in my lifetime.

As a few people know I am from Switzerland but my favorite tennis player is Andy Murray over the years I have seen Andy play in some of the most beautiful stadiums in the world. To name a few New York, Miami, Toronto, London, Australia, Rome, Shanghai and Tokyo. I have experienced extreme lows being a fan even being reduced to tears as I warmed to the nature of a man who carries a (nations hopes on his shoulders) and also experienced some extreme highs but the highs haven't happened overnight for Andy for as long as I can remember he has always had the skill and the heart of a champion even in his toughest losses he was learning and that learning has produced this magical moments for him making his victories even sweeter, Andy has shown that you should never give up on your dreams the quote "If at first you don't succeed try try again" comes to mind when I think of Andy hard work does pay off and I am so glad to see someone like Andy reach his ultimate goal.

In the Independent, (posted in the newspaper thread) Bolliteri reckoned this was the best grand slam final he had watched ever.

Here's the details

Independent (http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/tennis/nick-bollettieri-on-andy-murrays-victory-at-wimbledon-2013-oh-baby-in-all-my-time-it-has-never-been-better-8693912.html) - Nick Bollettieri on Andy Murray's victory at Wimbledon 2013: Oh baby, in all my time it has never been better

Holy, holy, holy mackerel and all the fish in the all seas. I have been watching tennis for 60 years – 60 years and I have never seen a more emotionally draining occasion than the one on Centre Court on Sunday. Oh baby, it was special. As a New Yorker it takes something to say this but this, a Wimbledon final below perfect blue skies, is a setting that I don’t think can be beaten. Add a Brit winning and there you go. It cannot get better.

I did not expect three sets and the way the match started off, those long thudding rallies, boom, boom, boom, 30 minutes for the first couple of games, long points, long games. So where did Andy Murray win it? Because let’s just be straight with this – Novak Djokovic did not lose it, Murray won it.

I've already expressed my congratulations and jubilations. Two more things to say:

1. I really wish that people wouldn't keep asking Andy if he & Kim will be getting married now. There is nothing more sure to damage a couple's relationship than people constantly asking this, especially if one of them is more keen on marriage than the other (which may or may not be the case). It's just as bad as young married couples constantly being asked when they are going to start a family (they may not want one or they may have fertility problems that they don't want to discuss).

2. Must tell you that virtually everyone on VamosBrigade is also absolutely thrilled at Andy's win - there are pages of congratulatory posts - not only the Brits but the Americans and everyone else too. Even the one person who really doesn't like Andy seems to be moderately pleased.

Really thought I was on my own with this one. Somebody should set up a poll on here to see how many of us think Andy could win at RG. I think he'd need to improve that 2nd serve, he certainly moves well enough, but most of his problems on clay would have been mental, and he's smashing mental barriers down by the day at the moment. With the extra confidence Andy can achieve anything. If it comes next year I'm sure the world No.1 spot will come with it, he's missed out on 1000's of clay court points this season that he'll be able to catch up next year if he is successful through the spring.

Congratulations to Andy on becoming the 2013 Wimbledon men’s singles champion, a brilliant achievement. I’m really happy for him, his team, his family, and the people of Dunblane.

I’m so proud of what Andy has achieved since Wimbledon last year: two majors and gold and silver medals at London 2012.

Hugs to everyone here who has supported Andy and believed that his talent would eventually come through and he’d achieve great things. We've certainly had a roller coaster ride but really worth it.

It is truly wonderful to see Andy being so richly rewarded for the years of dedication, discipline, determination and hard work.

I do not have time at the moment to find more articles but http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1651973-andy-murray-cant-afford-to-have-back-injury-become-long-term-issue makes it clear that Andy
(1) has a long term chronic back problem (2) clay can make a back problem worse due to the extra twists Andy has to make in that area to generate power and (3) if he has back pain, playing on clay can make it worse and even create more long-term problems.
Rafa's knee problem is not helped by the low bounce on grass.
The conclusion I reach is that Andy has a chronic problem that has to be managed. It has to be watched most carefully playing on clay. This does not mean he may not evolve on clay but it certainly does mean IMHO that clay is the surface he and the team are most wary of in terms of potential long term damage.

Re discussions on clay and the way it effects Rafa and Andy so differently - that's it in a nutshell. Different bodies, different problems. Grass clearly suits Andy and he instinctively knows how to adjust his movement to suit the surface. Look how many players slipped and fell mainly because they had difficulty in adjusting from the clay. Clay is obviously Rafa's natural surface, the one he learned to move on - this year he didn't have time to make the necessary adjustments.

I remember how Greg hated clay although Tim eventually mastered it sufficiently to get as far as a semi-final at RG, but I also know he had back problems (maybe not the same).

Just re-read David's post so not sure why I'm rambling on here but I might as well post too!

Presume I'm lucky then. SG is not as fervent and mad in his support as I am but he does love most sports. Like me he's not a football fan. What I do admire about him though it drives me wild often is that is a a very objective and fair-minded spectator. We watched the final in separate room and he joined me for the last game. This might have been a mistake as then I was demented. Pacing round the room, twitching, jumping and screaming. He just sat there calmly. He had put the champers in the fridge for me and was genuinely happy that Andy won so what else could I ask for?:big grin:

Both my folks who im staying with at moment are tennis fans, maybe not as nutty as me but they were both rooting for Andy and didnt say anything when I was going nuts and screaming when he won!
I was so happy to be able to share tennis with them this year as neither had been before, I took my dad and sis to queens and my mum to Wimbledon. Lucky that I got tickets this year.

I have now managed to get everyone in the office interested in Andy (10 of them) and they all watched the match and were congratulating me (as if I had done it). After the match I got 'phone calls, texts and emails from friends and family. It is so good to have so many people liking Andy now and interested in tennis. I bought two boxes of Congratulations, printed off two pictures (one with Andy and Novak wearing tartan tammies which is very funny and one with Andy holding the cup) taped them to the boxes and left them at reception where clients could also see.

To be fair, my hubby is just not interested in sport full stop. He didn't even get caught up in the Olympic buzz. I was brought up in a sport loving family and grew up watching all sports on TV so it is second nature to me, but I chose tennis and ran with it ;)

He did come to Wimbledon with me a couple of times way back when, before I got Gill into tennis! He enjoyed it and quite liked Tim and Greg. He was always pleased when they did well but never watched on TV. He has just never taken to Andy. I think the Scottish / English thing didn't help, even though I have tried to explain all that nonsense. However, he does love dogs and we have a border terrier so I have been busy showing him the photos and telling him about the bits in the documentary .... I'll break him down eventually

In a way, that's almost worse! My first thought when I saw it with the Union Jack was "what a shame its not a Saltire", but I understood why they went with the Union flag. However, its shameless bandwagonning on their part to go with a Union flag for other parts of the country but the Saltire here. But I bet they sell loads :)

Yes Harriet, I listened to on Monday evening and got emotional all over again. It should still be on iPlayer. Loved it, really clever bit of programming. Will miss Jonathan Overend doing the tennis on 5Live, always thought he was really good. about journalists. by intent or happy accident andy punched the air in triumph facing the press box. this gesture seems to have been well received - The Times had an excellent souvenir supplement, including pieces by Neil Harman (who shared a hug with andy) and Simon Barnes, who writes of andy 'a gracious champion who shared his triumph with us in the press box' and 'the boy who told the world to **** off was now a man, a champion and a large-hearted bearer and sharer of joy. I write (andy's story) once again with admiration and with joy. We're all detached and impartial in the press box, eh? Like **** we are. Thanks, Andy. For the story.'
andy has grown up, and he was a late developer in many areas. andy's maturation has allowed him to form or allow a much more open relationship with journos - and they're not all the same of course. I think the BBC doc helped to make andy better known to the public, probably helped them cheer even more for him on sunday. and by making the BBC prog, daring to come out of his shell, it should be easier for andy to draw lines - this I'll share, this is private.

New to posting as well but long time reader. Had a friend over watching the match and after he won the 2nd set he was like "woo he has got it in the bag!" Had to promptly remind him of the us open and with Novak it's never over till its over.

Was so over the moon when he won tho and it means I can continue my new tradition I've started. For every slam Andy wins I buy something from the official site of that event. So I bought a us open 2012 t shirt (which I was wearing for luck on the final day ;) and now bought a wimbledon 2013 towel. Was hoping to buy something else but only the towel has 2013 on it.

So when he plays in New York I will be sitting every time he plays with my us open t shirt on and the wimbledon towel round my neck lol.

As soon as he saw me he said that during the Final he was thinking of me and told his wife at the end that he knew who the happiest woman in the country was. We then chatted about the match and he was so thrilled for Andy it was lovely to relive it all again. He then made me laugh when he said that SG was just wonderful as our marriage was me, him and Andy! We then discussed Bouncy after he brought the subject up asking me why he was commentating on Andy's play when he'd achieved nothing (his words).
