View Full Version : RIO OLYMPICS - Men's doubles and mixed doubles
I was out yesterday evening and when I got home at 11pm I was convinced I'd missed Andy and Jamie's match. I was quite pleased to discover they hadn't even started yet! I tried my hardest to stay awake, but had to admit defeat at the end of the first set. I had a horrible feeling about the match, the Brazilians were playing out of their skins. But I am so gutted for Andy and Jamie - I had high hopes of seeing them on the podium, how wonderful that would have been. They looked absolutely devastated poor things, I think they had really targetted a medal this time. But like others, it may turn out to be a good thing for Andy in singles. I'd love them to win a doubles medal though before they hang up their racquets - guess that's Tokyo 2020 now though.
I decided not to try to stay up for the match as I know I'm useless at staying awake late. I need to go to bed and get up again and I'd already left it too late for that so I just thought "Oh well, I'll watch them in the next round" ..... so so sad for them and really wish I'd watched now!:sad:
Must admit, in some respects I too am relieved Andy can concentrate on the singles - I didn't feel he came out all guns blazing against Troicki. On the other hand I do feel for Jamie.
Gutted, more for Jamie than for Andy. Andy's main focus is surely the singles so it's not all doom and gloom for him. Really thought it was Jamie's turn for a medal though
I was meant to go to bed. I knew I was up at 5.30. I turned it off, went to bed and ended up watching it in bed on my phone. Shattered now. Is it bed time yet.

Don't think either of them could blame the other, they were both equally below par, Andy's returns, Jamie's volleys etc, beaten by the better players on the day
Mike Dickson from The Daily Fail newspaper tweeted that he had never seen Andy so upset after losing a match. I guess playing with Jamie means so much to him.
Spain Argentina should be good. I would hope for djoko's sake that Serbia could win there's but I think it's unlikely

Spain v Argentina doubles (Delpo/nadal) is working on the bbc online again. Don't know it it was just me it wasn't working for before. 1st set Spain 5-5 2nd set on serve, Delpo serving
Argentina take the second set. Third set starting now Gonzalez serving
1-1 in the third set Spain vs Argentina
Well that one will sting. The break to Spain after a double fault from Delpo
Double break for Spain, lead Argentina 4-1 in the third. Raffa serving
And the match goes the Spain. Well played nadal - Lopez

Djoko isnt playing mixed dubs OR cincy.
Copied this from a factsheet on the ITF Olympic Tennis site - meaning that the draw will soon be out, I hope
"9 August 2016 11am deadline for ITF to receive on-site entries from NOCs into the Mixed Doubles Event"
Djoko isnt playing mixed dubs OR cincy.
That doesn't surprise me. His total focus I'm sure will be on the US Open.
So the doubles quarters are set.

Only 16 teams makes the mixed dubs draw so I bet that means Genie/Vashy will not make the cut.
Pairs will be known soon with the draw at 6pm UK.
Russell Fuller @russellcfuller
Konta & Jamie Murray will be GB's mixed doubles team. Watson & Andy Murray put forward as 2nd pair - but combined ranking will be too high
Don't understand why having too high a combined ranking would exclude them? Anyone who can explain?

Don't understand why having too high a combined ranking would exclude them? Anyone who can explain?Because there are only 16 teams and the top 16 combined rankings get in.
Heather should have received ranking points for her Wimbledon title. ;) Seems harsh that 2 Wimbledon champions don't get in.
12 pairs qualify on ranking then 4 places can be awarded to pairs from regions not already represented or the home country if they haven't qualified.
Heather will be gutted, missing out again. Are the qualifiers fixed or have they got a chance if someone drops out?
Spain, France, USA & Romania all have two pairs in the 16 which doesn't seem an even spread although wouldn't have complained had there been 2 GB teams. ;)
Andy & Hev are second alternates so if two teams drop out.......
I feel sorry for Heather but I'm glad Jamie has another shot at a medal - Andy can concentrate on retaining his title.

Whilst pity for Heather probably best that Andy concentrates on the singles, not much chance of two teams pulling out. Would obviously be great if Jamie and Jo could win a medal,Andy should definitely make the podium in singles.

I'm pleased for Jamie though :) great that he has another shot. And ferrer after losing in the singles. Also I think it's good that Andy gets to concentrate on the singles. I wonder if ivanovic was hoping djoko would sign up
The way Andy's going in the singles, playing mixed would have given him something to fill his days. Maybe he can take in the boxing. ;)
We were told after their singles defeats that Jack Sock & Venus were suffering from viruses, both managing to get out of their sick beds to play mixed however. Brave soldiers. ;)

I think we would have had a better shot with Andy and Jo. I understand he wants his big bro to get more Olympic matches, but I think that the right choice would have been Andy for team GB. Andy is also more upbeat than his bro, and Jo doesn't seem to have her head as well on as she did six months ago (albeit miles better than 18 months ago)

Jamie and Jo drawn against Sock and Mattek Sands in Mixed 1st R, Americans only team in draw who have won doubles and Mixed Slams.
erm, Jamie has a Mixed Slam under his belt ...
... FWIW I think this mix is OK. Andy can focus on another gold medal in the singles, Jamie has been doubles #1 and Jo shows a lot of grit when it's needed so perhaps this pairing will work out just fine and give us a shot at a medal for GB.
Andy interviewed on 5Live sounded genuinely disappointed he and Heather didn't get into the mixed draw. He said he wasn't sure how the wild cards were decided but thought that they had a good chance both being Wimbledon champions.

Some strange tennis results at this olympics
I am surprised that they didn't get wildcards too so I can understand Andy's shock. I did wonder if this may be nadal a last Olympics with the injuries he's suffered. I guess it may be the last were he can ply all 3 events. I suspect they will get a doubles medal. I also think GB have a good chance at a bronze with our pair :)
They should have had another 8 teams in the draw with bye's for top 8 seeded pairs. It woud have been fairer.

Which court or when has yet to be decided!!
Andy's right to wonder how the 4 wild cards were allocated. The Tunisian pair of Jabeur and Jaziri submitted an entry and according to the ITF qualification rules for mixed "if any of the six (6) ITF Regional Associations do not have a team qualified via Direct Acceptance, the best ranked team from that region will gain a Final Qualification Place". They were the only pair from the African region.
Pospisil/Nestor just saved an incredible MP against Nadal/Lopez but Vasek volleying at the net is scarier than a zika mosquito. 5-5 in the second set.

I don't have a problem with him withdrawing, Mr M entered all three events in London 2012, and don't know how far you are going to get in a competition. I do have a problem with him withdrawing without sufficient notice to give a reserve pairing a chance to play. That to me is inconsiderate and ill mannered. Andy only entered the mixed doubles after he and Jamie had lost in the men's doubles on the Saturday so he was only ever in two competitions at any one time and if he and Jamie had still been in the doubles he wouldn't have entered the mixed which is what Nadal should have done.

It wasn't until after I'd gone to bed, and had radio five live going, that I heard about Andy and Heather would be walking out to play their first round mixed doubles match. As a pairing had pulled out and the first alternatives didn't want it. When I put my TV on, shockingly BBC 4 were showing it (although they only showed it towards the end of the match).

Not shocked at all, it's in keeping with a lot of Nadal's on court behaviour. i don't like it in any sport. One of our cricketers did something similar - Stuart Broad I think who didn't walk, when he knew he was out, and got away with it. Some call it gamesmanship, but I can think of another word for it.

And such a shame Jamie and Jo went out - feel esp. bad for Jamie, he's such an amazing dubs player, but never quite found his best for Olympics. Tokoyo 2020 is his and Andy's though!
SO sorry for Jamie Poor Jo just had a bad day at the office
Well done Andy and Heather Onwards and upwards!!
I'm shocked that Rafa is in the doubles final How did that happen?? Neither of them is a doubles specialist.

Neither of them is a doubles specialist.
Rafa has 9 doubles titles (3 at Masters events) of which 4 are with Marc Lopez (2 Doha, 2 Indian Wells).
Marc has 12 doubles titles including winning the Doubles Grand Slam title at Roland Garros this year.
... and he's not only a doubles specialist but he's Rafa's buddy.

Heather Watson played some great shots. I really think she is better at doubles than singles - perhaps she just relaxes
Yes, not sure what the equivalent of 2 left feet is in terms of hands, but that's how I felt about Jo last night. Not very competent/confident at the net at all, whereas Heather was really gutsy. Maybe Jamie drew the short straw there.
Of course they knew. Was shocked Rafa didn't say something.
I guess he really wants that Gold medal

Yes I thought Heather was amazing :) she was very brave on a lot of points!

I agree, she seems to really enjoy playing as a team. It would be fantastic if she and Andy could manage to win a medal when Heather was so very nearly on her way home.
I would love it if they managed to get far enough to get a medal. Heather would be doing handstands. I don't think she would care about the colour. I know Mr M has had two three set matches, but they have been far shorter than GS matches, so I think he will give it all he has got for her.
Any idea of a likely time?
Any idea of a likely time?
The schedule is saying not before 17.00 which is 9pm uk I think, they are on court 2 after the Del Potro match!
Thanks, I'm on my phone and struggling to find an easy to follow schedule and live scores all in the same place lol

looks like Del P. is coming to the end of his match. Andy on after. It seems to be available on iplayer on internet. not sure if on red button.
Delpo wins Andy/Heather on next on court 2 I hope it will be televised.
Schedule for 21:55 - I am exhausted, I have been on the beach with the dog today. We are both wrecked. The dog is in her basket looking at me as if to say, go to bed.

Funny to be talking about Andy in Jamie's joint.

2:0 to the right team. Come on Ms Watson hold.
Breaking Bopanna's big serve is a major plus. 2-0
Bops has his revenge. 2-1

Andy has been nothing like his best for a few matches in Rio, was below par with Jamie
Cmonnnn daniel & vasek !!!!!!
Just saw that nadal withdrew from the mixed on here. Did he say it was wrist related?

Hard going for Andy and Heather
Heather has only held her serve twice in this match. Hopefully the likely outcome will show her that his decision to go with Laura in London 2012 was the right one. He simply can't do it all on his own. It's a great shame.
Heather has played some cracking shots......Andy not returning well.

I'd rather a medal than make a point about something that happened 4 years ago.
Broke Bopanna's serve once so why not again? 4-5
Think it's probably curtains but they are playing doubles specialists.
It's for the best Andy can now concentrate on the singles He's looking tired.

Well they got to take part and did manage a win 4-6 4-6
Bad luck, Andy and Heather
Andy & Hev achieved something Andy & Laura didn't, win and lose matches in straight sets. ;)
I'd rather a medal than make a point about something that happened 4 years ago.
I would rather they had got a medal, but I think it has been a sore point with Heather that Mr M chose Laura instead of her. Now at least she will realise that there might have been a sound reason for that decision. It's not about point scoring. I wonder if having lost the first set so convincingly he was aware that the cost of pushing it for 3 sets might have been detrimental to his singles chances.
I agree - I think Andy is looking tired and he's got a long way to go before he gets any time off.
Rafa's out for the men's doubles final so withdrawal from mixed surely can't be because of wrist. Maybe just too much playing 3 matches in a day but shame for his partner who can't then get a medal.

Not a bit of it. Andy knows this isn't all about him. It's about being in a team and doing his level best to get as many medals for his country as possible. One for himself is just the icing on the cake IMHO.

Pity but Andy and Heather didn't really produce best consistently, though know a few great points and Rohan and Sania accomplished double players. Still they were glad they got the chance to compete here and Andy can now focus on the singles.

Disappointed for Team GB and Team Canada. But kudos to Team Canada for getting to the semi-final.
And Team Spain have won the first set - VAMOS!!! :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:
Fantastic men's doubles final! Clearly nothing wrong with Rafa.
Managed to watch Andy and Heather. Is it me, but I felt neither of them really came alight? There seemed to be something just not there...neither seemed to 'get in the zone'. Feeling disappointed for them, but great they got a couple of matches anyway.
That was some doubles gold medal match!! Really enjoyed it. Poor Mergea! That final smash will haunt him.

But IMHO the best team for medal hopes in the mixed would have been Andy and Jo. Jamie just hasn't got Andy's fire power to get himself out of trouble and support a lady in the same way that Andy has.

:grrr: The Beeb excelled themselves as usual. Had to go to bed so recorded it and the next programme thinking they would stick with the exciting match. Just got up and watched to the end of the first programme. Put the second one on only to discover they'd abandoned it. I'm fed up with this coverage. What's the point of being able to record?
Great win forSpain but for obvious reasons really hope Rafa doesn't get a second gold and more especially after pulling out of the mixed and abandoning his partner when there's clearly nothing wrong with him. Chauvinism to my mind. Shouldn't have entered all 3 unless he thought he was capable of carrying it through. Couldn't imagine Andy doing such a thing.
I agree with you, pabbers, about there being nothing wrong with Rafa's supposed wrist injury. You don't take that short time off, come back and make the semis in the men's singles if you do or did have a problem.
I knew it was always going to be a hard match for Andy and Heather to win against Bopanna and Mirza. I'm glad they made a match of it, though.
I wish it had been Andy and Jamie!
Well done Rafa and Marc. :gold: So nice to see Rafa looking so happy.

Thanks! Someone called Ana Mitric tweeted me a link which I've put on FB. So awesome! Was so happy for R&M but bittersweet coz Team Canada wasn't in the bronze medal position. I feel so bad for all the fourth place finishers.
Another day, another complaint by Nadal about the scheduling. All these smiling pictures of him with his medal but he was angry when he spoke to the press and the first subject he addressed was scheduling. He thinks he's been treated unfairly all week and today's semi-final should have been played at night and that Del Potro has a huge advantage. He even has the gall to say what would have happened if was still in the mixed doubles. Let's not forget, Andy played 3 matches in one day in 2012.
I am getting rather sick of some people taking a pop at Rafa, who despite not being fully recovered from his wrist injury has come to Rio because he loves the Olympics so much, and has given his all in every match despite putting his recovery back. :grrr:

I agree! (Altho' I did take a pop at him during the dubs semi-final. :shamed:)
I think it's amazing what he has achieved this Olympics - and same for del Potro!!!
Nadal should stop giving people so many opportunities to "take a pop". Unsportsmanlike behaviour, continually complaining about the scheduling and withdrawing from the mixed doubles at the last minute denying another pair the chance of winning an Olympic medal.

Sorry but Rafa is always a great sportsman and conducts himself very well. He is also incredibly humble. And he and Andy are good friends and I think Andy's a very good judge of character. Yes, he should have not withdrawn from the mixed or at least done so earlier, I agree, but other than that he's not done anything too awful, come on!!!
Sorry but I just don't buy being able to play like he is if the wrist injury is now anything more than a niggle at most.
Actually for me it's not taking a pop at Rafa so much as irritation at excuses for Rafa being made as always and on Andy's forum. The logic of those excuses is that if Rafa goes through to play Andy tomorrow then if Andy loses he's a numpty against an injured opponent or if Andy wins, he won't really have won because Rafa's not on form. This is a recurrent mantra. Most of us on here are prepared to say the better player won against Andy on the day or even that Andy played badly.
It may be considerate to keep Rafa worship for the Vamos Brigade :flowers:

I'm not worshipping Rafa at all; I think I'm being extremely fair towards him whereas you have always been critical of him. This is a tennis forum so of course we all have players we love or don't. That's the name of the game. As long as Andy is #1 for all of us on here I don't see why I should not talk about Rafa favourably. :flowers:
well like Ive said before , people see what they see , if your a Rafa fan then you see all his good qualities , if your not , then you see what Bardot described , human nature
