Good chance for Aljaz to pick up more points today about 11.30 v Mager, currently #28 in the race. A win will take him above Kyle in the live rankings to #2 Brit ......but hopefully only for a couple of hours as Kyle plays later
Aljaz's match has begun.
I have to go out in about 20 mins, so hope he can make a good start!
Sane here Jan.... Good luck Aljaz! 😁
One break each, it's on serve.
Good luck Aljaz - hope for good news when I get back.
:GBflag:
He broke for 6-5, but got broken straight back, so it's TB time.

3-7 Oh dear, bit of a shock, he should be beating this guy
hmmm, the pre match odds favoured Mager, so not such a shock, but I'm not sure why. Maybe he's a clay court specialist?
Mager has really bad cramp and is unable to stand up. Trainer is in attendance in situ behind he baseline.
Play has resumed and Aljaz wins the second set
Aljaz wins after Mager retires with more cramp
6-7, 6-4, 3-0
Aljaz wins by retirement of his cramping opponent at 3-0 up in the third.
Poor Mager really suffered. It was painful to watch...I don't know why, or how, he carried on. He was so obviously struggling. I had noticed at the change overs he was icing himself down a lot and I didn't think it was THAT hot so I wondered. Must have been difficult for Aljaz too to keep his concentration. Anyway Aljaz, upwards and onwards!
Aljaz cementing his position as GB #3 speaking of which he gave the perfect response to Evo's low comments, insisting he does feel British.
After qualifying for the Italian Open in Rome yesterday with his 26th win in 29 matches, Bedene laughed off Evans’s comments when asked if the pair had spoken to each other here.
“I haven’t yet,” Bedene said. “I will, if I see him. I’ve got nothing against him. I think it’s funny. I like him as a person. I think tennis needs people like him. He’s honest, he’s saying what he thinks.”

Pleased for Aljaz , but sad for Mager, apart from home advantage I see little reason why the odds favoured him...patriotic Italians? Aljaz has been in great form on clay, at the moment certainly a lot more consistent than Kyle and better than Dan

Aljaz now #25 in the race , has won 668 of his 898 ranking points this year, currently above Kyle at #51 in live but with Kyle soon to play

Very impressed with Aljaz in set 1. Pity the TB went down the drain so quickly.
Had to go out for half an hour.
Looks as though this is nearly over.
Loses the second set 6-2.
Some great play at times.
Djoko too good when it mattered, though it was nice to see him make a hash of several MPs!!

Looks like he will be playing Jiri Vesely in the next round.
He is playing Vesely in the next round. No doubt, ITV 4 will make sure they won't show it.
I've written to the ITV about this morning's lack of coverage. If anyone else would like to do so, here are the details. I thought it was disgusting we only got five minutes of coverage of a Brit, and even a warm up too priority.
If you have any queries or comments about any ITV programmes or services, please send an email to ITV Viewer Services at viewerservices@itv.com
Saw most of Aljaz's match. Great win! Well done Aljaz!:clap: The commies on Eurosport referred to his 'wife' who is a pop singer from Slovenia, but in the short while ITV went to his match, Petch referred to his 'girlfriend' the pop singer. Who was right? I hadn't heard Aljaz had got married. Petch also inferred he had returned to Slovenia to live?
And yes, although I have Eurosport Player bought when they offered a whole year for £20, I do agree that it was a poor decision on the part of ITV not to show Aljaz's match. It's frustrating!

There we go... a few questions answered! And it's fiancée, not wife.

That would be a shame - I like Aljaz and I think he's an asset to British tennis. I can understand that he wants to play in the Olympics and maybe the only way he can do that is to represent Slovenia. Having said that, I can also see why people would feel aggrieved that he took British citizenship, received funding from the LTA and then reverted to Slovenian.
Aljaz was interviewed this evening on ITV 4. He came across as a really nice person...very gentle and unassuming. He talked a bit about going through a really hard time last year, but he is very happy now, both on and off the court. His fiancée may have something to do with that! Strangely he wasn't asked anything about the possibility of him returning to Slovenia. As you say Alis, he is an asset to us and I hope we don't lose him.

30-05-2017, 07:27
But how is he an asset to GB ? He can't ever play Davis Cup, he may get selected for the Olympics, so apart from appearing in the rankings list with GB after his name, I can't see how he is useful to us. Let him go back to Slovenia, but what will happen if they don't pick him for the Olympics. Will he try and play for the team of Refugees ?
I heard about him thinking about switching countries and how the LTA would be very upset about it after spending their money on him trying to play Davis Cup for us.
Did they...the LTA, I mean?
I've always thought he had a rough deal, which could explain one of the reasons why he and fiancee could be heading back to Slovenia...

But surely it's not ALL about Davis Cup? The more Brits we have to cheer on in tournaments and slams the better...especially when they go deep or even win.

Yes it's nice to have another Brit to support. But the LTA wouldn't have put the time, effort and money into his naturalisation process purely for the benefit of tennis fans. If he now decides to go 'home' and try and play for Slovenia, i agree the LTA wouldn't be happy. But they could have saved themselves the trouble if they had chosen not to support him from the start, instead of trying to change the Davis Cup rules.
He's last on court three tomorrow.

Great Bedene got through opening match and think would be pity to lose him, however understand the lure of the Olympics and he can't be selected without being elegible for Davis Cup,wonder if certain comments have had an effect as understood there was still avenues to persue . However know the process has been frustrating in any case.

I don't think the LTA did try to change the rules. My understanding is that the rules on Davis Cup qualification were changed after Bedene had begun the process of naturalisation. Effectively, the goal posts were moved after the game had started - hard lines on Aljaz. As far as I'm concerned, it's great to have another Brit to cheer on - we aren't exactly over endowed!

Because he won 2 days ago - so was presumably mentioned yesterday...
This morning BBC said Andy and Kyle were through to the 2nd round of RG but no mention of Aljaz - not nice.
They mentioned it the day before. It's also mentioned in the article.
French Open 2017: Britain's Aljaz Bedene considers switch back to Slovenia - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/40083299
So maybe now people will understand more why Evo said what he said. He may well have known about this. He didn't give good examples but it seems he was right about Aljaz living back in Slovenia. I'm sorry but I don't agree with players being granted citizenship just to get funding or because of better opportunities. If Aljaz wants to be British for other reasons too, completely fair enough (like Greg who's mum was British and who married a Brit and had been living in UK for some time when he got citizenship) ... but it is seeming more and more IMO that this is not the case with Aljaz. I have nothing against him, he seems like a very nice lad but I can empathise more with Evo now.
Again, nobody was arguing with what Dan said, not really.
Aljaz on court now, and 1 - 2 down, but about to serve. All the best of luck to Aljaz

No point in me repeating what you good folks have posted as you are all correct, he tried so hard & that's what I like to see!
I heard, last night on radio five live, about him still wanting to play Davis Cup for us. It sounded like he was going for another appeal. I did wonder how many appeals could he have? When they made that rule, about players who switch allegiances and then not being able to play Davis Cup for their new countries, I think if I was them I would have said you can do that but not after this date of this year (date and year mentioned in the statement of the new rule, which I would have given).
