Shame, would have liked him to come through that one!
It was a shame, I really thought he would come through that one :( oh well. Still a good few matches from him. Enjoyed getting to see him live at wimbie this year :)
Disappointing to see Aljaz now sponsored by The Sun. What do they teach in those citizenship classes? Maybe Evo was right. ;)

Yikes I didn't realise that. It is rightly banned around Liverpool. Maybe he doesn't know.

Great win by Aljaz. Would love to see him win the tournament.
I would as well, if he gets past his next one, he may well win it. Khachanov (seeded 3, seeds 1&2 already out) is 16 places higher in live rankings at 29, only just 21, the only younger player ranked higher than him is Sasha. There are still a few tough seeds left in the other half though like Simon(4) and Paire(5).

JAMES4578
15-12-2017, 10:31
Suppose no great surprise as Aljaz had moved back to Slovenia and the 2020 Olympics a priority for him, pity in a sense but certainly not critical and wish him all the best. Bedene to play for Slovenia again (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/42363820)
I'm sad to see him go but totally understand his decision. It's been a stressful couple few years for him, the year we won it and he was appealing his results went right down due to the stress of having to talk to the ITF. I think they've treated him very unfairly, changing the rules on him last minute.
I wish him the best of luck in the future and I will continue to take an interest in his tennis and support him.
I'm with you there, Helen. It must have been awful for him being in no man's land, professionally speaking, compounded by his wife's unhappiness here, according to reports. Sadly, his decision may be leapt upon by certain people as a reason to be suspicious of anyone seeking residency rights here.
but isn't Aliaz going to fall between two stools again? if he is now a Brit how can he compete for Slovenia in the Olympics
Presumably if he reclaims Slovenian citizenship his eligibility will be through in time to qualify for 2020 and he can play DC for them in the meantime. Remember Lola Budd getting UK citizenship in 2 weeks to compete in L A Olympics in 1984?
Josephine

Hopefully he had dual nationality. Lucky him - won't be stuck at customs and immigration in Europe in a few years like us poor Brits.

Yes and the Slovs have put his mate and twin bro into DC positions so he knows he will get picked.

I'm very sorry that GB has lost Aljaz, and think that the rule about playing DC for another country could be modified with a time limit.
I think he was harshly treated, but I also feel a bit betrayed. He knew the situation before he changed allegiance. He dies seem to have bitten the hand that fed him.

I think when he first applied the rules would have allowed him to play for GB but the ITF changed the rules before his application was approved resulting in him not being able to represent his new chosen country.

don't disagree with any of this, except for him wanting local support at Wimbledon. Think that's stretching it a bit. I suppose some will, but to me he's just another player now.

He would love to play at the Olympics and in the David Cup. Pretty sure it is not his fault he could not represent GB and I respect his desire to play and therefore go back to his previous affiliation. And he is the same human being and tennis player. I am patriotic but cannot see how, given what happened to him, my thoughts on him as a tennis player should change . ;)

I agree and I will also be supporting him in his next match ;)
I wish him all the best for the future, but,
I think his only mistake was not to make sure all his wants/aspirations could be fulfilled before he chose to play for GB. (Jumped ship)
Surely he knew or had been advised that there was a chance it would happen?
I know it wasn't his fault the rules were changed but before any contract or transaction all T's should be crossed and i's dotted.
Which it now looks like that was not the case.
If it had been our Andy, his team would'ave never of fallen foul of that.
Just look at the Hip situation from start to now!
I believe every avenue was at least quadruple checked (as always) before any decision was ever taken/finalized.
Then there's the Lendel departure surely amicable under the shadow of said Hip. With options of getting back together at some point in the future? (I hope)
Andy and his team although not perfect have most things covered. Their mantra has to be along the lines of.........
Fail to prepare. Prepare to fail.
And that's one of the main reasons we love him so much. Hurry up and get fit and well Andy we miss you so much.
