I'm not watching - have other things to do - but by the look of the score this is rather one-sided, sadly.

Djoko double faults to hand Gael a break - now 5-2. C'mon Gael, forget about the occasion and play - you've never had a better chance of reaching the final of a Major!!

Alis

Ok- so Djoko wins the first set 6-3 but he's not looking comfortable. Monfils begins serving the second - c'mon, Gael, get it together and let's see what you're made of!

Best thing about this match is how Monfils's performance has perplexed the commentators. They can't get away with their usual cliches and platitudes. :big grin: It's a disgrace, it's unprofessional, maybe he's injured, maybe it's nerves, he might still win so won't be too critical.....

Me too, Teresa, me too! Djokovic was lucky to get out of that - then in the post match interview he refers to both Kei and Stan by their christian names but Andy is referred to as 'Murray' - I think that says it all. What a bizarre tournament!

When asked he himself said he didn't know. Sometimes it happens. What I think was odd is that they asked him why he ripped his shirt but it's no different to Stan smashing a racquet and no one ever asks him why. Not sure why it's seen differently. I do think it's something players need to get a grip of, but I guess it's difficult.

I think it was a step to far for monfils. He seemed tired and stiff. He started the match so nervous that he really fell behind. He looked nervous as he came out, and especially during the pre match interview. With it only being his second gs semi, it's easy to understand why. But they crowd booing him so much couldn't have helped. Then afterwards the eurosports team accusing him of not really trying. I think it was the nerves of the day. It hasn't lessened my respect for monfils one bit. And despite the bad feeling the Eurosport team suggested was there, they seemed genuine in their embrace at the net. I am sure monfils will go on from here, he'll kick himself for this loss and then he'll improve. As for djoko he didn't look good at all. Distracted and making lots of errors. Given his win over Novak here a few years ago I think that kei could challange the Novak who won today. I hope for a more interesting and competitive final. Though more than that I look forward to the next slam and hope it goes better than this one. Bring on the AO

Wawrinka scrapes his way through the draw and then finds his form at the sharp end when it matters. Confirmation is the fact he's won the last 10 finals he's reached. Quite an achievement as would be winning 3 different slams having been in "only" 3 slam finals.

Alis

I don't think I'll bother to watch the final. I have no time for either of the finalists so I've lost interest in the outcome.

Teresa
10-09-2016, 05:30
Not bothered either, but fully expect Djokovic to come through. I think he will be far fresher than Wawrinka, and I am fairly convinced his MTO's yesterday were nothing more than tactical ones. It says something about them, when people on here could predict their timing with such pinpoint accuracy. Even if Murray had got through Nishikori I still think he would have lost to Wawrinka or Djokovic. Nobody can win against top players with a completely empty tank, which is Murray at the moment.

I think this year it was a choice of US Open or Olympic Gold, just as last year it was a choice of US Open or DC. I think in both cases Mr M made the right choice. It gives me a nice warm feeling that Mr M has something, (or two somethings), that Federer and Djokovic don't have, and are unlikely to ever have.

I agree. Dan Evans had a match point against Stan ...pity he didn't make it !
Having watched Novak last night I think Stan may pick up his third but I do hope not.
Not entirely bothered who wins but one more for Novak won't make a lot of difference but would like Andy to be the only other to hold 3 slam titles .
But then......who out of the top players has an Olympic gold...who else has two
So perhaps I won't watch the final

10-09-2016, 07:16
I was annoyed when Stan and Andy both had 2 and then he got ahead and now Stan looks like getting a third as well. Can't say he's faced lesser opponents or anything but there's no way they're even close to the same level. I guess Stan just has that big game that can take it away from the opponent whereas Andy doesn't. Quick, cheap points are gonna help always. 100% record in finals as well is impressive

Two of my absolute faves but glad Stan took it because he sure knows how to give Nole a butt kicking in Bo5 matches - they've had some incredible tussles, whereas I would have given Kei far less chance.

If Stan levels Andy's slam tally then so be it - it's down to Andy to reassert his superiority, rise to the challenge, and win even more next year, which I am sure he will!

Wasn't too bothered who won between Kei and Stan but not too surprised Stan came through. Djokovic is a bit of a mystery at the moment, we've seen too little of him to know where he's really at but agree with Teresa that the MTOs yesterday mean zilch. Just seemed like Djok reverting to tactics he's employed in the past, though admittedly he hadn't done it recently until last night. I think Stan could win. And to think Dan had him at MP last week

My thoughts too. Even if Stan does win his third slam, he and Andy won't be level for long...I reckon Andy will have a real chance at the AO in January. And yes, I think Stan will show us where Nole really is at the moment better than Kei would have done. I do think there were big cracks showing in Nole's game yesterday...it's a pity Gael couldn't sustain his 'A' game (when he finally found it) because he was beginning to open up those cracks.

I'd certainly never miss any Grand Slam final men or women- no matter who is there as have been big tennis fan since young,,don't like Djokovic much nowadays and whilst don't mind Stan thinking of what could've been for Andy. Just hoping will be good final!

Don't really want either to win but as a tennis fan won't be able to resist watching. Though if it's a long one I may need to pass n the ending as can't really go to work sleep deprived when I've such a busy week and weekend to follow,. 11-09-2016, 13:16
I will watch some of it at least depending on quality. Overall, because Stan has had a tough route through, whereas Djoko has had the easiest ride in modern Grand Slam history, I would prefer Stan to win. He has been 9 hours longer on court up to the final than Djoko, so that must make a huge difference so may be an easy win for Djokovic. If Stan does take it, would be a bit annoyed that Stan would have 3 GSs, as I do look at everything through Andy tinted glasses.

WimbledonWestie
11-09-2016, 16:30
If Andy and Novak had switched draws Andy wd be in the final. After realising that a win for Stan wd give him 3 different slams, 2 of which Andy has yet (note yet!) to win, I think , since one of them has to in, I'll need to hope it's Novak.

I'll be watching, or at least will until about midnight. If is goes longer than that I'll be off to bed. Only an Andy match is enough to give up sleep for on a work night . Mainly interested to gauge where Djokovic is at the moment and how he copes with another top 5 player.

Just don't want Nole's confidence to receive an unwarranted boost. If Stan could beat him after the tournament each of them has had, that would surely shake Nole to the core. Otherwise, whilst to us, the win by Nole would be facilitated by his lack of hours on the court, he would doubtless see himself as the outright victor. Would like to see him have a few doubts.

Absolutely this.

Also - on a purely meritocratic basis - Stan would be a more deserved USO champion. Not just because he's had to beat much better players than Novak - that is obvious - but also, I think Stan has had some success at USO in recent years - I think he's also taken Novak to 5 sets there - it's his turn to prevail, this time.

Yes, it would put Stan level with Andy with 3 slams - but Andy is likely to win more slams in future than Stan will imo. Andy will still edge ahead of Stan, and rightfully so.

Also - Stan's wins over Novak at slams are usually pretty enjoyable to watch - that epic Australian Open quarter final in 2014 (I think), plus the French Open final last year.

High quality stuff for the most part but the match just seems a bit... flat in my opinion. I wish Andy was out there, it would have definitely been interesting then.

Jokers not match fit so wear him down, even if you loose the point/game/set,
